Dual Universe Volunteer Forum Moderator Guidelines

The following are the guidelines for the Dual Universe volunteer moderators. They are written with the moderation team in mind, but have been posted in the spirit of transparency so that all community members can see the expectations we have for our volunteers.

    Moderators are Anonymous
Moderators are given an account with a unique user name. Moderators are not permitted to reveal their real or forum identities to anyone for any reason. That includes friends and other community members. We take this very seriously.

    Moderators are Impartial
All moderation is done fairly and impartially. Moderators are expected to treat all members of the community the same. This means you may be required to moderate posts and comments from your friends, maybe even your best friend. It’s a difficult thing to be impartial when dealing with friends, but it is imperative that you treat everyone the same and show absolutely no favoritism.

Moderators Always Remain Calm and Respectful
As a moderator, you may become the focus of a community member’s anger or frustration. Remember: Be nice. It’s not personal. Even if they are insulting you or making outrageous accusations, be nice. You are simply the target, not the cause (probably) of their anger/frustration. Never respond in kind and never, ever respond out of anger or frustration. This only leads to an endless spiral of anger and nothing is resolved. That said, please know you are not expected to take abuse or be subjected to mistreatment from the community. Abuse of moderators will be addressed by the Community Team.

    Moderators are Here to Help
Moderators should be as helpful as possible. Even if a question has been asked a hundred times, understand that the person asking it might be new and this is their first interaction with the community. A helpful and welcoming response can turn a curious newbie into an outstanding community member. A curt or unkind response, could turn them away from the community and the game. Always offer the best answer you can, with links if possible. Of course, after answering their question or providing links to the answer, it’s perfectly acceptable to introduce them to the search feature and suggest they check it out the next time they have a question.

    Moderators are Proactive
When a conflict arises between community members, a good moderator will step in and try to defuse the situation. Sometimes all that’s required is a friendly reminder that we all are passionate about the game and we should respect differing viewpoints. If things get out of hand, then locking or hiding specific posts or possibly the entire thread until a Community Manager can review it is a good option. If you do this, contact a community manager immediately so we can take appropriate action.

    Moderators are Volunteers Not Employees
We consider our Moderators valuable assets and we are deeply appreciative of the time they dedicate to making the forums a better place. However, it is imperative that moderators, and all members of the community, keep in mind that moderators are not an official Novaquark employee. Moderators should never place themselves in a situation where their comments may be construed as an official statement or position.  Likewise, moderators should never post in a manner that suggests or implies they are a Novaquark employee. Doing so can create serious issues for the moderator and for us.

    Moderators are under NDA
From time to time Moderators may be provided with information in advance of its public release. You are expected to keep this information in strict confidence and not share it until or unless otherwise instructed, in writing, by Novaquark.

    What can Moderators do?
The following tools and abilities are available to Moderators:
Able to see and read all reported posts. Access to the Moderation area and Tools Move threads between sections. Hide specific posts or entire threads. Merge threads.

I hope so, the same way I hope LUA scripts are able to recognize and act according to the tags. For example an outsider come to your base and a scripts tag him as a visitant but if the outsider have a tag from an enemy ORG it tags him as invasor and activate alarms and defense systems.

In the last video JC said that we'll be able to customize our own widgets for constructs in HTML & CSS. If you want a quick, interactive (and fun?) way to learn at least the basics, i suggest you to try this: https://www.codecademy.com/ , it does have some well done tutorials, easy to understand even for someone with no experience. I'm not related to that website, i'm not even sure i can post it so feel free to remove this post if it's the case, but it has been helpful to me so i'll share that with you.

The forum community hit another small milestone today, as the member number hit 5,000!

I'm sure these aren't all unique accounts, but hey, the communities still growing and that's great.

Let's just keep the ideas, the news and the interest spreading so D.U. can be a great game with a grand community!

As far as I know, you can't walk around on a ship in No Man's Sky, as it would be pointless, as the game doesnt' sport an actual server-wide galaxy but a repeated occurance of a star system based on an algorithm.

Also, be a casual and fly to another planet when FTL drives are unlocked. Just don't whine if the early birds gut the worms and when yo uarrive you find out another org has taken over the planet.

I think JC said that you need like 30 minutes to a week get to another planet - as they are not all in a ring around a star, some of them you'll haeve to place a trajectory to get to around the star. Warp is gonna get it down to 5 minutes (0.75 AU per minute if we assume the closest planet is a half Mars-Earth distance away at tis closest approach and you actually go there at maximum speed of 0.9 c ), so the 1 week travel time with sublight, with a 0.75 AU Warp drive, becomes 3 hours 45~ minutes trip. And 0.75 is - I assume at this point - their early projections as a Dev team for the Warp Drives, given the consistency of the examples. 0.75 AU per minute is actually 6 light minutes more or less per minute. That's 6 times the speed of light.

And at the DM21 interview on youtube, JC spoke of a maximum of 8 times the speed of light warp core as an example, which would take you 1 week to get to ANOTHER STAR SYSTEM. 8 times the speed of light == 1 Astronomical Unit per minute.

So yeah, if the trip was to last 1 hour for the cloest planet, it would give many people an incentive to build a home somewhere and for explorers to actually ADMIRE THE SIZE OF THE GALAXY.

You know what else this means? Transport cruiise ships can actually function. The trip takes long. Why pay for fuel yourself? I mean, you may not even want to drive there. Just get on an interplanetary cruise ship and get to the planet of your choosing. Why would anyone wanna be a transportation ship driver? I don't know, why would anyone wanna be a freighhter? Oh snap, you didn't consider that freighters in DU can be used as a trasport ship as well for people... yeah. You are welcome for this epiphany.

You know what No Man's Sky never had? Depth. Do not compare DU to NMS. The only thing in common is the futurespace setting. If you are feeling lazy or want isntant gratification by "teleport Warp LULZ" then, as I said before, be a casual and go to another planet or system the casual way, wait for FTL or Stargates. I'm on the same boat, I can't bother with freightering or playing DU as "Space Sailor Simulator Online : Salty Men in Salty Spaceships", which is why, as I have mentioned countless times, I'm actually gonna help some people set up an Uber services in-game. Space Cabbies are best Cabbies.

SimonVolcanov reacted to Anaximander in Debate 9: Tech Tree Thoughts
Well, that's the thing though, learning how to handle mining equipment is one thing, but knowing how the mining equpment is made could provide you boni to mining speed and yield per cycle. Then, you could eventually get to refinery, providing you with a bonus to yield on mining a certain mineral because you mastered its refinery. That's what I'm talking about. Intertwinerd skill trees and tech trees, so there's incentive on sticking to one character training to unlock the skills that are not accessible in a straight line.

Similarly, for combat, I can learn how to equip a power armor, but knowing how the power armor is made, can provide me with bonuses to repairing said power armor variant, or provide me with bonus on damage towards it, as I know where its weak points are.

That's what I'm referring to, depth

Having a tech tree and having an in-depth mechanic that circumvents the skill training by simply rolling alt accounts is just gonna hurt the game in the long run. EVE is the prime example. They claim the game has 500000 players. It doesn't, it has 75000 players, and on average 5.5 accounts each. It's why many people in EVE joke that "one player quits, 15 pilots down for an alliance". And quite frankly, I don't wanna see that in DU.

Playing devils advocate here a bit.

There will be a community "Code of Conduct" it will just happen naturally and be unwritten as the games matures in to itself. I wouldn't waste any time typing or expressing said rules, as like I said, it will come about naturally. Specific rules that players want to abide by will come down from their own organizations (if they are apart of any).

As far as NAPs go, for now I imagine it will be a simple verbal agreement, but I would like to see a contract system in DU where agreements can be made in game and signed by both parties. Both parties could then put up a collateral for the duration of the NAP, and if broken by either one before the contract has ran its course, said party loses whatever was put up as collateral. Simple, and binding.

Anyway, the delay is a good thing because it means that the first time it is released to the (select) public, both via backing the game and online video, it will have a higher quality. This higher quality upon first impression will increase the chances of making DU get off the ground once it fully releases. It is also the same effect where by having an early access game more complete before it enters early access, it generally does better than those which are less complete.

To be honest, there is no real incentive to actually join the alpha than to be a part of the group. It'll be fun but the beta will have more developments and will have some refined mechanics that are more balanced. I don't really think you'd mind either one though, as the gameplay will probably have continuous fun.

However, if you do join the alpha, let me know. I'd enjoy seeing a master strategist in game.

It does contain new footage. This was all taken at GDC last week and the footage was captured directly from JC's laptop that we had been using to demo the game at the show. So what you are seeing is JC actually going over portions of the game in real time, on a recent build,  for them to record for the interview.

Not necessarily. Keep in mind that these ships are not stationary and the armor means it will take multiple hitsources even on a weak spot to score a CU shot. One moment you are shooting at the top of the ship, then at the bottom, then attached the back. Plus the other ship is shooting back the whole time. What emerges is an elaborate dance where each ship tries to to outmaneuver and outlast the other ship in order to kill it's CU.

Think of it like sword fighting. Theoretically, you could win the fight instantly by stabbing your opponent in the heart, but in practice you must get past their sword and arms first while they run around on their legs. As such, one will commonly aim for the legs or the arms first to wear down their opponent before eventually moving in for the kill shot.
