ATMLVE got a reaction from Hotwingz in Ship Ideas?
If you want ship ideas, I would totally check out this website. You can put it any combination of any characters and it will generate a ship based on that, which is a seed. Put in absolutely nothing, and you get a random ship every time. But, whats more fun is to put in text, and see what ship it generates, because you can put in that same text later and it will generate the same ship. I've found it neat for inspiration, and there are definitely some super awesome ones that can generate, but unfortunately I can't think of any right now. Anyway, try it out:

    http://ship.shapewright.com/
    http://ship.shapewright.com/?name=ATMLVE
    http://ship.shapewright.com/?name=Dual+Universe

I've put in 100+ characters in the name field before and it will still use every character as a seed to generate a new ship; and the same ship every time for that seed. I think the number of ships it can generate is limited only by how many characters you're willing to type in.

Space Engineers, Minecraft, and Arc (all with survival mode and with mods): My brother and I have shelved this for now. We felt like we have reached the end game of what we set out to do and the game loop has become stale. There are no more challenges we want to overcome or problems that we need to engineer a solution for. We've overcome the survival aspects of the game to the degree that it is just creative mode.

On the other hand we play all of the above on very small, private, pve-centric servers. We don't want to participate in pvp combat because, to be honest, we can't play all the time every day to make sure our hard work isn't lost. One success of Eve is that a thorax is a thorax and so I'm ok losing it as long as I can afford a replacement. However my creative work is much more important to me, so I don't want to put my hard work at risk.

The developers have said they don't want to make pre-made content. This makes sense because in the lore, humanity has spread far across the stars and of course, where they're going, there's no one and nothing there. The game is supposed to be about players rebuilding everything from scratch, and so the lore and game mechanics tie together perfectly (as they should, obviously).

But according to the lore, Arkship technology was developed about a century before the ships were actually completed. This technology most likely includes the propulsion technology. Someone surely must've used that tech to launch some probes out into the galaxy to aid the search for potentially habitable planets; I mean just think about it. That totally would've happened. Humanity needs a new home, so before we finish these massive starships capable of housing millions of inhabitants for thousands of years, run by AI and made of magic material, why not send out a couple probes to see if we can find a good direction to launch them in?

I think it would add not only some interest to the exploration side of the game, but also possibly the lore, if it was possible to find probes out in Dual Universe. Old satellites that are no longer functioning, but from which minorly valuable rewards could be obtained. Before you persecute me for suggesting pre-made content, remember that it not only fits the lore but could actually improve it, and it really doesn't take any of the fun out of the whole "we are rebuilding civilization" aspect of the game.

However much I like the idea, I do not believe Novaquark will bite on this idea. While this will help the players going about settling planets and what not, it would just make it easier for players to settle new planets, which means they have to create new planets. The reason Novaquark makes it that it takes so long to travel to new systems and stuff, is that it allows them to have enough time to make whatever system you wish to go in, and even if its game-generated, they still have time to get more space for all the data that will be required in that planet and what not. So while it is possible for such a "satellite" I honestly can't see it in the immediate future as the Novaquark team already told us the only thing they would be providing is some temporary npc's to get the economy started, and the arkships.

I think at whatever time you activate the subscription, you have something like 30 days to play from there. So its not like you automatically have two months the day the game comes out, then that's it... That would pretty dumb, and totally unacceptable.

this thread is about your experience with other games and what you didn't like about them. What could those games do better than they did?

This is not so much about DU and how different DU will be, or what possible other mechanics there are in place. It's only about OTHER games and their failings.

And this is true, a lot of organisations are indeed closing their doors until the game is out. But we'll see how that affects the bottom end of the orgs, the 990+ other ones.

Here's another idea, what if you could "refurbish" them and in so doing, gain advanced technology? I don't mean to suggest that this could be done easily, it would take lots of resources, but organizations might have the ability. Also, if an organization successfully restores one, they gain access to the data it collected in its travels, like a map containing info about planets it passed on the way to where it was found. Info like inhabitability, ore content / type, planet size, etc.

Or you could just have that info be "harvestable" like a hard drive. No refurbishing required.

    Just a thought.

    Brilliant. Have a cookie.

This has somehow become a bit far removed from my original intention. Perhaps I didn't explain it properly to begin with. But then again I could not have foreseen the overwhelming negativity, however justified.

Tagging is not necessarily connected to inter-player dispositions (blue, orange, red etc.). It could be. But that is a property that could be added to a tag. It can just as easily be left off. By adding a few sentences to a tag, this could be used to recreate that EVE subsystem but it can do so much more.

The distance at which the tags can be "seen" and/or activated should be a really close range. We are talking tens of meters. Not thousands. Though I can see the use of extending this, with the correct skills, to hundreds of meters. Again, not thousands. Also I see checking for the existence of a tag much like scanning for resources. In a cone or sphere, there may be one, some or many in the area but a detection will only return a yes or no. It was never meant for pinpointing over huge distances.. also that would not be viable with the server architecture as it is.

The biggest driver here is that tags can be seen only by those that have rights to see them. Which is why RDMS works for this idea. And hackers with sufficient skill couldcan see them and potentially remove hidden tags. Hidden tags would not be able to have duties on them since that is effectively a contract entered into willingly.

I will concede that completely hidden tags is a bad idea simply because a player does not know what is going on and this goes against the idea of fairness of the game. A hidden tag counter might solve this: A readout of the total number of tags, hidden or not, on a character. So a player will know there is a tag, but not what type of tag it is or whom it belongs to. This can be used as a prompt to go visit the local hacker cleaner.

Will NQ implement this system? Unlikely. Is it fun to think about? Definitely. If this in some way inspires a NQ dev, then this thread has done its job.

I don't imagine the invisible tags would necessarily be able to track someone anywhere, that would be pretty cheap. Rather, it would be used like any other tag, except they wouldn't know they have it. I mean, if I tag someone in my org, they know they have the tag, but can I track them anywhere they go? No. But, that tag does trigger certain things if I have set up a system that reacts to their tag, like doors or ships. Same goes for the invisible tags, I can't track the owner but I can make it so that they are immediately identifiable.
