    Basically?

The more players are within a certain geometry, the more resources are allocated into said area of the server to compensate for the processing power required, by dynamically splitiing the server into sub-divisions (clusters) that operate within a larrger server cluster. Anythin g within that mega-cluster, is updating rapidly, while the rest of the unvierse goes on a slower rate of updates.

That is achieved by cloud-based server hosting. What the Cloud is, it's up to you to research, bottom-line being "many servers, computing as one", this als omeans though, that what you run (the ship you fly, has scripts, which you run, the wepaon turrets, have scripts which you oeprate) are run locally in your machine, hence, you become part of said Cloud-server. So, the server only updates locations and checks numbers, it doesn't actually run ANYTHING on its end, either it being script or fly patterns. The autopilot on your ship? Your RAM is the one that get's taxed, not the server's.

That basically means there's no real limit on how many people can be in a certain area at one time. If there are 100 people, it's like 5 servers ( one for each continent, I guess). The servers can be spun to meet the demand, while the rest of the unvierse is "fridged", when nobody is around.

Now, beyond that, the game's company can recruit more servers via the same cloud-magic, to reinforce its update rates and client handling. Let's say 100 people play in one area, from all around the world. The server cloud would be hosted in 5 servers, one for each region. If the players were to be 1000, that wuld need 50 servers. 10000 players, 500 servers and the list goes on and on.

This is also the reason the game needs a suscription.

    Cheers.

Hi there! I came across Dual Universe a couple days ago from a youtube vid a friend linked me.

It looks so cool! Anything I should know about the game?

Thanks for the suggestion, and welcome to the forums! My first thoughts on this is that I think it's a bit of a stretch to ask for specifically programmed games within the game (what you're suggesting makes me think of GTA V, I remember getting into a game of darts with a friend and we couldn't figure out how to win or lose, or even leave the game, was funny). It just doesn't seem to fit the style the developers seem to be going for.

Now, players can certainly try and make things like this happen. It might have to be something like Tabletop Simulator, a game where you have the pieces and the physics engine, but it's up to the participants to play by the rules- so the game doesn't have the rules of chess programmed in it, but rather it give you physics and a chess board and chess pieces and you can do what you want with that. Scripting will be a thing too, which could help with smaller games within the large one. Dual Universe will be player driven and there will be a lot of tools and freedom, so it could definitely happen! Custom GUIs will be a thing too, so you might even be able to make full fledged virtual versions of the games you're suggestion, in community buildings that could become pretty popular.

Before Dual Universe I spent countless hours scouring the internet looking for -that- game. I think many other people know exactly what I'm talking about. -The- game that would tie you down and keep you immersed for hours, where you could live in a virtual world and be part of something bigger, where you could build your dreams and be part of a whole other universe.

I was feeling rather down, depressed or sad take your pick, in the months before I learned about DU from E3. I was feeling kind of burnt out about things happening in projects I was involved in (I was a dev on Bitcoin Classic) and just generally was very mopey. I wasn't sure what else was going to come along that would suck me in and make me feel like I could contribute in any meaningful way.

When I discovered DU I was ecstatic, and I don't think there was a grain of pessimism inside of me. As soon as I saw the trailer, as I'm sure others can attest to, I knew exactly what it meant for gaming as a whole (especially sandbox gaming) and I just knew what it was NovaQuark was attempting to create.

I don't think I've been as happy in a long time, being part of DU Explorers, flying out to PAX to meet JC at the NQ booth, getting to be involved in various happenings here and there, everything Dual Universe has been a very positive experience in my life this year.

Lately, I've been feeling down again. I don't know if it's because of the lack of interest in getting people to be on DU Explorers for another episode (we haven't had one in 3 weeks...) or if it's seasonal or something else entirely. I couldn't even bring myself to write anything for NovaWrimo with all the back and forth banter and arguments between different organizations. I'm just exhausted.

I'm sure things will turn around here after the new year. Although, unless I can get another episode of DU Explorers together soon, I think I'm going to be taking a break from DU for a few weeks.

Regardless of all of that, which are purely my own problems, I think the main purpose of this was for me to say thank you to NovaQuark and Happy Holidays to everyone there for everything that you're doing for us.

Even in these early stages of development, what you're doing has had a special impact on hundreds if not thousands of people. I don't think anyone here will disagree that you're doing something that has changed our lives forever.

Between all the new friends we've all made, and all of the excitement we've been able to be a part of (Kickstarter was a nerve-wracking blast), we've certainly come a long way and it feels like we're not that far away from actually being able to interact with each other in-game.

    Thank you NovaQuark.

Yeah, you can always try and sell it for a little less than you bought it, to come away with something. Although, considering this circumstance of yours has only just come up, you never know what might randomly come up again later that might allow you to play it! I'd say keep it. EVE online has been around for a very long time. I suspect this game will as well; even if you can't play for the next five years, after those five years are up you can still join and maybe look pretty elite/legendary with your kickstarter gear! It's all up to you, but I'd say keep it.

The "technology" behind resurrection nodes is that when you die, the universe switches the position of your dead body with a the position of your living body which happens to be in a completely identical universe, except that your body is in a resurrection node. The losing skills might still make sense with that, but I think the fairness of that would depend on how long it takes to get those skills in the first place. Perhaps just losing experience would be more appropriate, or losing a level in just one category of your skill tree. I think losing a level in all categories is a bit harsh; it might make things frustrating for people new to the game, who are both not powerful and not experienced, as they may be more prone to death. And if you look deep into video games in general, nobody likes to lose progress they worked hard to get. It turns them off towards playing to get it back.

I do very much agree that there should be a penalty for death, beyond just losing what you have in your inventory, which means nothing to someone who wants to go on a suicide trolling run as they'll simply leave everything valuable behind. But I'll leave that up to the developers to decide, as they are currently the only ones who know how everything works.

    Hi everyone,

So it seems that BlueDrake42 has a vendetta against our game for no apparent reason (if there is one, we will be interested to know it).
As we can't remain silent against such diffamatory talk, here is our answer:
In this video, you can see that our battlecruisers are made with voxels, and arent' meshes as supposed in BlueDrake42 last video on Dual Universe.

    @Pittouniata:
Your signature and your posts will be edited as they are definitely inappropriate and diffamatory.
If you persist in this behaviour, you'll be banned. This is the first and last warning.

I think Gas Giants would come in an expansion (it is cool, but not vital). The problem would be that only new systems would have them. Alternatively, you could have gas giants in the game but if you approach them they tear your ship apart (so they are just locations, not voxels), until they release the tech (expansion) to enter them.

Our planet Mercury has an extremely long day. It takes so long for the sun's light to get all the way around the planet that Mercury was once believed to be tidelocked.

As per your question/suggestion regarding the game, we can't know for sure until we know exactly how planets will end up working in the game. Depends on if they're completely fixed, if they're fixed in space but rotate about an axis, or if they orbit the sun and rotate about an axis. However, no matter what, I would imagine that day length in DU would change with the solar system.

I don't think there are too many details about specialty planets like this yet. Water is something that will be in the game at some point, and I can't imagine there wouldn't also be ice, so a water world is certainly a possibility, though the amount of processing power required for an entire planet of water might be undesirable.

As for gas giants, that is unknown at this point. Would definitely be cool to have them in the game, especially if some of them had rings... I would love to land on a moon and look up and see a beautiful crescent world with huge rings hanging in the sky.

It's a possibility that has giants could have an upper atmosphere of fluid similar to water (as in, the mechanics, not the substance) so that you could put habitats in them or fly in and mine them. At a certain point below the surface of the upper atmosphere, the pressure would be too great and your ship would be crushed no matter what (in reality, of course, there's not actually anything generated below a certain point). Would add another area of expertise to the game! Maybe a fuel type only able to be made from harvesting the atmosphere of gas giants. Which, of course, you'd need special skills and equipment to do.

Anyways: Archeage. A really cool concept of a game, and relatively similar to DU in some aspects. From my experience with it, it suffers from an awful lack of balance in some area, particularly with land ownership. DU needs to avoid this by properly balancing the ownership system, which will be challenging to do. I have faith in them, though.

Gentlemen, this thread is for survivorship bias: keep it at that. The way it's headed, it will have lost its meaning and purpose in a few more posts. Other games; other failures; and how Dual Universe can learn from them and make the game better for all of us. Simple.
