Hotwingz reacted to Dinkledash in Collision damage - workaround suggestions
Dunning-Kruger was inspired by a study about a bank robber who thought that lemon juice would make his face invisible to security cameras because it's used as invisible ink.  To go straight to the Dunning-Kruger effect is to assume that this guy is in the bottom quarter of the general population IQ-wise, which seems a bit much.  It is true that nobody here knows your education and experience in gaming and game development.  Would you care to provide us with your credentials?

I'm a software engineer with 17 years on the job and in my opinion, while realistic collisions would certainly make for better cinematics, there's a lot more to calculate than a simple bounce when two collision meshes intersect, and based on my experience in big data cloud environments (medical IT, not gaming), nobody can know what the server load would be unless we actually simulated 100,000 simultaneous collisions.  And the amount of coding to get there would delay a lot of other deliverables, so it would be a considerable risk.

The developers also said they don't want people creating ramming ships that are kamikaze'd into exquisitely engineered, well designed constructs because they think that would make the game a lot less fun, and that would make people stop paying for subscriptions, so in that regard, this is as much a business decision as it is a matter of judgement in design.  Even if characters didn't resurrect, there would still be a problem where players would create new characters who's reason for existence is to drive an iron brick with an engine and a cockpit into another ship while yelling "Leroy Jenkins!"

This is a management-level decision as much as a design decision, and I really don't think this hill is worth dying on.  Collision damage would be fun, but so would weather, planetary rotation, agriculture, animals, alien biospheres, a survival system, a FPS aimed combat system and a hell of a lot of other things we're probably not going to get until later, if at all.  I'm not saying collision damage would be bad, or it couldn't be made to work, but computer science is partly the art of giving up something you want in order to get something else you want more.  Is collision damage the most important thing to you?

Hehe twerk, I have many issues but OCD aint one of them.

Yea the big name games put a lot of money into their demo's and trailers. Often leading to presentations that dont even resemble the actual game.

I like the simple no nonsense videos from NQ. Flaws and everything.

Yea its going to be a lot of fun.
Personally I am thinking to find a mountain and make me a cave. Perhaps buy a plot in Emberstone when it is being build.

But people will want a TU in the safezone to recruit new players. It will be valuable I think.

    Happy you have your answer.
But dont go around saying silly things if you clearly did not look at all the sources. NQ did state it clearly.

Hey man, as we have said many times, you are free to not support this game.

NQ-Nyzaltar has tried to engage you on the topic. You did not pick up his offer. You left and now you come back repeating the same message.

To say the slow burn of the kickstarter is because of the DAC system is very biased. And ignorant of what is happening in the wider genre.

You have said before your community has withdrawn their pledges, 2 weeks ago?
    And now again?

Good luck finding a future game that upholds your high standards.

Well if you ask for a list of all core elements inside a construct then it will make it easy to copy it.

An even if it was listed, there is no way to know if the construct will do as you intend it to (like fly correctly or kill on detection) apart from testing it (in a virtual space like I said).

For example with your own example :
Power core 7mw : Is the power core even used, is it enough to make the construct do what is said it does?
Thrust. 50mt : In what direction? for how long? Does it allow you to do horizontal or vertical movements? is it possible to hover?
Fuel capacity 500m3  : In how much tanks? are they all accessible? are they all using the same fuel? is the fuel the tank use energy efficient?
Storage capacity 400m3 : How is it distributed? is it one main chamber? is it multiple small rooms? is all the storage capacity accessible? what size of products can in handle?
Overall mass. 10000000kg : How is it distributed? is all the weight in the front? is it all in the left side? is it all in the top? Can it even fly?

These information would only be relevant if displayed while testing the product in the virtual space because they are only relevant in one situation at a given point in time.

Hotwingz reacted to ATMLVE in Blueprint construction
While your ideas are certainly noteworthy, blueprint construction has been announced as being handled by a certain construction element. So the whole blueprint is constructed at once, in an element that's something like a drydock. By default, you will not be able to add anything to blueprint constructions, nor save them as your own blueprint.

Perhaps it is undeed a communication issue. But I doubt it. JC said in an interview that a person was free to change professions whenever they wanted.

And I agree with that. You may want caps I however do not.

I dont think everybody being a master will be an issue. The amount of time it would take to learn everything makes it not practical. Player freedom is a core value of DU, the skill system should follow the same values.

NQ has private investors that will invest the rest of the money if the KS is succesful.

Yes Warden but such is the nature of sandbox games. Hopefully the early birds will be sensible enough to develop the safezone with respect towards newcomers.

You dont have to own a house to play right. So hopefully the newcomers will have a fair market unit and useful industrial infrastructure.

On the server tech, JC calls it 'dynamic area splitting'. It basicly divides space in seperate sections as people density increases in that given area. The more sections are created the more server hardware is called upon to handle the load. And this happens seamlessly, we as players wont notice this happening.

So everybody spawning at the same place after character creation shouldnt be a problem according to his predictive models and tests.

There is indeed no real code of ethics baked into the game.

Hotwingz reacted to wizardoftrash in Digging machines
There are currently no plans for any digging elements. This means mining will be an activity that players will have to do by-hand. Mining and exploration is intended to be a social and engaging activity in this game, and as such the devs have opted to make digging machines not an option (atleast at release, this may change with later expansions).

Yeap and to make things fun we should encourage ship builders to participate in racing games. The winner would sell loads of ships.

I played EvE on and off over the years.
I dont want DU to be just like EvE myself.
DU is quite different at the core in my opinion.

The reason EvE comes up so much is because for a lot of people EvE is the benchmark for a succesful sandbox with a functioning economy. There are many succesful systems in EvE. So its natural for people to fall back on it when describing mechanics.

But for me EvE has grown stale and inflated. I dont want DU to just copy EvE.
And I dont think NQ want that either.

We dont want the WoW effect right.

I agree with this. Skill point loss is uninteresting and just plain frustrating. There is no way to earn that time back or prevent that loss, other than not dying in the first place. EVE used to have that system and they removed it for a reason. It doesn't make for good gameplay. It just discourages everyone from ever risking dying ever; pirate or carebear. As it stands now, you lose your ship, whatever you were carrying, and get sent to respawn somewhere else. That's already a big penalty. Plus, like Kurock said, they are things you can control. You control what type of ship you are flying (and if it's insured). You control what's in your ship. And you control where you are. If you want to risk it all with a super blinged out ship carrying valuable cargo through dangerous space, then you have a large risk. If you just want to fly around in cheap ships with your buddies and have fun, knowing you'll probably explode, you can, safe in the knowledge that your level of risk it low.

As to punishments for the killer, those should be player driven (with bounties or word of mouth reputation). There is no reason for intrinsic punishments for the killer. The game world is not watched over by some omniscient entity which punishes people who violate it's code of ethics (that would be religion and a whole other can of worms). It's up to the player's to provide consequences for people's actions in game.

maybe they can create different components to assemble a weapon to give it different stats. But everything will be meshes and objects they design and put in
