They just posted a few days ago an answer to the currency and economy question:

BTW, they never really said NPC as in actual NPC characters we interact with. more like bots or programs that auto add things to the ingame markets.

and also the same source on player made currency:

Good point, hacking will make that work.

But if the base is walled of you really need to be able to damage constructs. Digging wont work because of the no mining restriction.

kulkija reacted to Shynras in consequences of non-regenerating planets and ressources
NQ said that resources will come in different rarities and that there'll be so much of the common ones (like copper, iron, ...) that they'll likely not deplete at all. An 8 km long vein of copper, I can assure you is a lot of material, and since we don't know how much copper will we need nor we can imagine the size of the planet compared to the amount of common material there'll be there, we can't say for sure that resources will deplete. It's a matter of balance (it's different from minecraft or any other game, it is balanced for a multiplayer not for a singleplayer experience), and if NQ says that common resources are unlikely to deplete, I think you should keep that in consideration.
There'll be a good amount of rare materials, and then there'll be tons of common material. When players will deplete the rare ones, they'll move to find more, and they'll leave like 80% of the common behind. While searching for more rare materials on other planets they'll find common materials too, so they don't need to go back to Alioth, and they can sell it on the market so that less people will need to mine on Alioth. That 80% of common material, after that most of the player base moved, will need a lot of time to deplete. That's just an assumption, it depends on how much resources people will need to build and how much there'll be on a planet. Wath will stop a player to just mine it all and store it? Time , Energy and Risk of being attacked.

No, no it's not a skybox :V That's the whole jist of the game, no Skyboxes. Yes Man's Hype has skyboxes and stars that rotate around planets. You can't have a continuous universe like that and this is why the NQ devs are working hard on making planets rotate, instead of some Sean Murray BS with stars orbiing planets.

So no, Skyboxes are not a thing in the game. The way JC explained it in the DM21 interview, it's that the farthest LOD rendering (the point you can't see anything with any form of scanner) will be a 2D image of the distant background on the servers. That's simply a tesselation trick, the closer you get to it the further that "draw map" goes back and away from you as objects render in in LODs you can't even detect.

So, as long as there are nebulas in the game, I can't expect the sky to look like that shitty No Man's Sky pink-yellow-blue background. And so far, Nebulas have not been confirmed. So, no, the devs can't make pink nebulas, without nebulas existing in an area of space you wil ltravel towards.

Doth Lord Cringeworth of House Layman realise that the CvC combat, is the same mechanics as Avatar Vs Avatar combat?

It doesn't need "testing", that will be done in the Alpha regardless. It's the development time on their part to implement it that is the issue. The 600K Euro Stretch goal was to hire more people to develop that part of the integration of the combat system, something they can still do, if the Paypal store raises enough funds for them.

    So yey.

It appears that they are releasing player customization in the official release, but holding off on construct v. construct until a later patch or first expansion.

I am happy construct v. construct isn't a first day feature since I think it will help players make initial developments without construct weaponization.  My only disappointment in no construct v. construct initially is that it seems like we likely also won't see it in the beta also.  Who knows though, since it looks like they will want to add it soon after, we might get some beta construct weapons prior to the initial release.

How do you think I know your age?  I'm not clairvoyant either.  I checked your profile.  I object to being disrespected and you turn that into me trying to belittle you by referring to your age?  That is just so internet.

DU is a game where content will be player-driven, EVE is not, and the alpha team is going to have a fair amount to say in the business rule development as DU progresses.  We're 2 years out of general release at this point.  Nothing is set in stone except for voxel technology and the backstory.  There are actually some benighted people who don't like the EVE skill system.  If we get to create our own equipment don't we have to be able to create the skills to use that equipment?  If people want to have in-game education, to be able to build schools, to have a training skill, that does not make them wrong.  Or braindead.

So you think that the transfer of the experiences directly to the brain is the same as actually doing something?  Fine.  I don't like that, but you're not wrong to like that.  I'm not suggesting grinding unicorns, I'm suggesting spending 10 minutes a day using a skill in order to increase your learning rate.

How does one automatically learn when offline?  Are you teleported back to the arkship so you can plug in?  What if you're on some far off planet?  How do you access the arkship library?  I can see how you might learn a skill that's been downloaded to your brain and needs to be processed, but how do you access other skills that you want to learn?  Are skills just being broadcasted through the universe?

If you have to buy expensive implants, that's fine, but does that have to be the only way to learn a skill?  Can't you also learn by doing?  Or by being taught?

This is a roleplaying game.  If you want to minimax every game mechanic, you are free to do so, but the point of any game is to have fun.  If you think that achieving maximum exploitation of a game is the way you express your intellect, go for it.  If that's how you have fun, good for you.  I think that having good relationships with other players, creating a beautiful environment and writing cool code to make SLI products the best on the market is where I'm going to find my fun.  So good luck, we'll see how the rules actually get written over the next two years and hopefully be part of the greatest game in history.

I don't think we're getting off on the right foot here.  I'm twice your age, so please don't call me son.  And asking if someone is braindead for making a suggestion in a thread about making suggestions is kind of rude.  I'm not being a jerk for you.

Perhaps the training system is inspired by EVE, but that could just be the starting point.  The business rules for skills training haven't even been written, so I'm pretty sure the alpha team will be in a position to make suggestions.  I've seen several organizations with mission statements that include education.  Unless that education is entirely devoted to player skills (how to build stuff, for example) then I am fairly certain that people will indeed want to apprentice to the master roboticist so they can learn how to build and repair higher tech mechs faster.  Personal interactions in order to get training create roleplaying opportunities.

I don't like the idea of training that is so passive that you don't even have to be online to train.  Uploading a skill directly to your brain is like reading and watching videos about blacksmithing and then claiming to be a master when you've never lifted a hammer.  You don't know the feel the hammer in your hand, the sound of properly tempered metal, the smell of forge, the heat on your face... there's a lot more to a skill than book knowledge.  But that's just me.  Maybe you want training to be fully automated, just plug your brain in to the ark and magic happens Demolition Man style.  That would certainly be easier to code, but it would shut the door on folks who want there to be a value in experience and effort.

So... when you're training, do you set up a queue for training?  Get all the level 1 and level 2 skills you want queued up, log off for a week and come back and you're as skilled as people who played 80 hours.  I just don't care for that.

Indeed, they might be. But, it has already been stated by a lead developer that planet-destroying weapons will not be present in the game. While no doubt super awesome, such a weapon would be just too powerful, and would have too great a chance to ruin the game for other people. Imagine players pouring countless hours of time and effort into the creation of a planet covered in a few large cities, only to see the entire world obliterated by the Interstellar Legion of Trolls. It would be a huge deterrent to builders if their work could be rendered non-existent and irrecoverable in a single moment. Thus, the maximum power of weapons will be intentionally limited within the game, to ensure everyone stays equally happy.

    Okay, back on track.

JC  is absolutely right when he says NMS hurt the indi devs and caused a general distrust towards crowd-funded games these past weeks/month.
I'd say this is not the first time people are "fooled" by unrealistic game designers who can't tell when the bar is too high... Peter Molyneux is a prime example and has been cited, rightfully so, to be quite the man to over-hype his games and under-deliver (ie Fable series, Milo) despite his brilliant career and multiple incredibly successful games under his belt.

However, people are learning from Murray's mistakes. Novaquark is a very good example of clear communication and setting realistic expectations, but they are not the only ones. The folks behind astroneer (another game that had the NMS-like trend slapped on it by various media outlets) recently made a post about what can be expected from the game, especially during its alpha stage.

This is a very smart, appropriate and sane move from an indie dev who will heavily rely on its community to fund its development... Personnally, I think the mayhem caused by the "NMS debacle" as some like to call it, was for the greater good (as painful as it can be for Murray and his dev team).

Devs are now more open about their projects and the development cycle they are getting through. They know they have to, because people will now be more careful about how and where they put their money in. So yeah, it's a hard time for indi devs, but it's for the better for the backers, and maybe some people will now think twice before trying to fund an unreliable or unrealistic project.

So, yeah. Crappy title but excellent article

kulkija reacted to NQ-Nyzaltar in My Community Has Withdrawn Our Pledges
    Hi everyone,

As the topic is derivating seriously in the last pages, it's going to be closed.
To all those who are wondering if the current level of funding already include the pledge withdrawal, the answer is yes: The pledge amount is updated in real time. If someone unpledge, it's immediately reflected to the amount pledged on the Kickstarter page.

    @ChipPatton:

To sum up your point of view:
    1) Our communication is canned because we didn't reply directly to your community's experience.
    2) You didn't try to discuss with us because the previous reply was canned in your opinion.
    3) You said the PLEX is inefficient against goldfarming.
    4) You assume that I'm convinced DAC is the perfect too and that, apparently, only my opinion counts in the Novaquark Team.
    5) You consider that globally we are non-caring.

So to address this (very) subjective declaration:

    1) We read your community experience and we understand that your experience with PLEX hasn't been fun. However, just looking by the prism of one experience, and refusing to look at the bigger picture is something we can't do as game developers: The problem you encountered is something that you would have encountered sooner or later even without the PLEX existence. Why? If unfair players want to harass a specific group and they have money for it, yes, the official staff can close as many accounts as possible if those use gold farming sites to get a lot of in-game money, but the unfair players will come back again and again, as money is not a problem for them. This is a neverending story. As an EVE veteran player, you probably won't refute the fact that you can harass anyone with fresh new toons, only a few hours old, in Tech1 ships in EVE Online. Again, even without the PLEX/DAC system, the problem remains as a whole, only less visible. So what you consider as a "canned reply" is just a different opinion from yours.

    2) Avoiding to start a discussion just because we have a different opinion from yours, and that there are chances it wouldn't go your way... It has indeed no chance to convince the Novaquark Team. Self fulfilling Prophecy here. But you have no right to complain if you didn't even try.

    3) Three big developers/publishers seem to disagree: CCP, Blizzard and NCSoft (Carabine studios).
Beside that, as gamers, we didn't experience the consistent huge amount of PLEX/gold selling you're mentionning in EVE (Yes, we have EVE players in the team). Do you have something to back your declaration about PLEX system being inefficient beside your own words? If it's the case, we are interested in this data.

    4) The Community Manager status seems to have been misunderstood here: having a personal opinion and making the communication (both ways) between players and the Novaquark team are two different things. Whether or not I'm convinced of something is irrelevant in this case: If players have concerns about one aspect, I transmit the message to the team. If the team has an official stance on a topic, I transmit it to the players (the reason why you received twice globally the same answer). Now, while the team won't change a feature as important as the DAC system on a whim, if some solid concerns followed by facts are given in a well-argued discussion, everything is possible (except coming on what has been already promised to other players such as Kickstarter DACs). However, loud voices and threats of unpledging without solid reasons will not affect game design decisions.

    5) Just because we have a different opinion doesn't mean we are non-caring. We care about every opinion. However, we are also realistic about the fact that we cannot satisfy everyone. Nobody can.

If you have something else to discuss with us that are not:
    - Your (unfortunate) experience on EvE Online.
    - Assumptions of the real intents of the Novaquark Team (like implying the DAC system has been chosen by greediness, when the game is free, the expansions will be free and there will be a free trial period when starting the game... not really a good way to start a reasonable discussion with a developer).

Then by all means, send me a private message on this forum and I will transmit the message to the team for discussion.

    Best regards,
    Nyzaltar.

    Hi CodeGlitch0,

Reminder: If you want a quicker answer about the Kickstarter campaign during the Kickaster campaign, it is best to ask the questions in the comments of the Kickstarter page. All questions are regularly answered there.

    To conclude the topic:
Yes, Alpha and Beta phases won't require a monthly subscription (but you will need Alpha and/or Closed Beta Access Keys to participate to these phases). We thought it wouldn't be fair to charge a sub for an unfinished product.

    Best regards,
    Nyzaltar.
