    Hi hdparm

I had seen that vid before but didn't have a good look at the engineers report - so slowed down the video this time and it does indeed look like the leverage effect is in use - which is great!

Cant wait to get in-game to try out my ship crafting abilities

That's the general rule of thumb, yes.

No sane perrson IRL ever attacked a Capital ship with a cruiser, not on deliberation at least and with proper intel.

The Capitals' larger guns, can hit a smaller ship before it can even get within firing range and it's the main reason Capital ships (past a certain mass of course) are approached with "bring a capital to fight a capital".

There IS a mechanical limit on how big a ship's gun can be before it's impossible to operate, and Capitals oeprate on the assumption "equip the biggst guns, have the toughest armor". If Ia ship doesn't have the biggest guns or the toughest armor, it's NOT aa Capital.

In fact, the term "capital ship" became of use when the Americans made the first "modern" version of a battleship hull, with the USS Constitution, which for its time was impossible to puncture with ANY cannon size, unless VERY VERY up close. Problem with "Old Ironside", is it would pepper you to death before you could even get close to it to shoot it.

So, for all intents and purposes, Capitals are meant to fight other Capitals, and their escort ships are there to protect the Capital from being approached from smaller vessels who can do some serious damage if they get really close. The same rule that applied to USS Constitution and its two-type wooden armor, applied to the Bismarck's thick 300mm steel belt and the same idea applies to the USS Nimitz and its swarm of jets and drones.

It's also why Capital ships always have the most senior of personel, with the commanding officer being a captain or admiral. Thhere is a certain degreee of experience needed behind such a ship.

I personally in DU would stick with a Destroyer, mainly cause they are VERY VERY specialised, like a Rogue-class in other MMOs. You are just that DPS.

So, I've been wondering what type of look or style do player organizations plan to use to represent their empires, or player groups. From ships, to stations, to buildings and structures. A unified look of a organization and/or Empire could be important to stand out in the crowd. I think it would be cool if player's established a unique design style for themselves, that becomes iconic in the game. for example,

The Forerunners from Halo had a ethereal style with a juxtaposition of polygonal shapes and strange glowing features.
The Empire from the original Starwars, had simple but pronounced geometric shapes like Triangles, Sphere's, and hexagons. With basic neutral colors like Black, White, and gray's.
The Ancient Roman's structures where driven by Dome's, usually supported by Pillars, and Arch's, and incorporated many religious motif's.

What kind of design style will you're empire, or player group be known for? How will you stand out in that regard? Or if you're a builder/designer, what type of designs do you plan to make?

Doubt it. Those kinds of offers are expensive for the devs over time; they effectively remove a player from the funding stream once their package cost is exceeded by whatever the subs would have cost to that point. They are a reward for very early backers with deep pockets who take a chance on an early concept. Once early backing is done, the life-sub offers always vanish, and never return.

See, people will copy the model that works.

If a proper fighting force recognises a shi pof X mass and Y weapons as a Cruiser, then people will just mmimic that and call it a cruiser.

I mean, people copy more stupid things in other MMOS, like item-builds, playstyles and even entire metas are born that way.

The TCU has its limit of action from the atsmophere but in space, what radius does it have?
Because, as said above, it will take large static cores in space, but if this is not possible, it means that everyone can change the structure, outside the group itself?

oxygen is hard to do in DU (because they would have to constantly check for hull breaches and that would kill the server)
they might go for a simplified system with oxygen bubble generators iirc, but that's way after release (if ever)

food and survival elements might come too - can't find the thread atm but they want to go there at some point

I'm very very very glad NQ shut down their sales after crowdfunding for a year.

It shows great integrity of intent and avoiding the temptation to continuously extract money from their backers who are invested and possibly more prone to "sunk cost fallacy", and more eager to invest more than they should (risk) given subtle promptings from the dev.

It also as they've stated elsewhere: Ensured they don't over-extend their scope creep nor over-promising... Notably they released pre-alpha build to honour commitments and then avoided the Paris games week again to prioritize development and not lose weeks.

So thank you NQ on that front. Thank you, emphatically.

Secondly, I would like to chip in a couple of months or more upfront to "support" the devs (market signal and finance). But also along with this option comes the further option to create an Organization which I would also like to do. So end of year would be welcome for me on that front as well.

I look forward to joining this game community and promoting some positive stories with everyone.

This seems to be the "hot iron" many games (or their devs, respectively) won't touch because it could annoy or "piss off players" whereas it is more normal in other games or game modes.

If you also want to cover police aspects or elements of slavery this is must-have in my eyes however. The key is balanced mechanics. A potentially too hard system could be seen in the Minecraft civcraft server where players could be captured in a twilight dimension while their "soul" was bound to the overworld pearl. Problem: holding a player does not burn much "fuel" and to release a player you had to have the pearl. So what do people do? They capture someone and put the pearl in secure storage where others can hardly reach it. In short you could be held weeks, maybe a month or longer before you could consider appeals through a higher instance such as server admins as it was simply part of the server and game play.

A more controlled system you see in Arma 3 or Space Station 13 where player police or security can put you into prison temporarily. These sentences were often limited, on a minute basis. At best you'd sit in it for 10 to 30 minutes depending on offense.

What would I propose,  how could it work in DU?

    1) I would not mind an A3/SS13 like system with limited sentences that everyone should be able to live with as they are time capped, often through built-in timers.

    2) How this could be implemented or rather work in DU is a tougher question. If you have a general capture mechanic for players I sense abuse or indefinite holding if you can just put someone in a room or cell with no (easy) way out. And if the player has no way out on his or her own, either through tools or commands.

At best i can currently see domestic prisons work that only work on player run tiles or faction owned tiles where you can place actual cell units (complete item given by devs) where you can place (misbehaving) players for a limited time. In the context of DU 10 minutes are a joke so it could be a bit more on average, but not exceeding 1 day or so. Or half a day. Or a quarter. A third. Fifth? You get the idea. As it is faction run you also do not have to go there if you don't like how they handle things on their turf like taxes or punishments.

Binding this mechanic to faction controlled tiles (Alioth could also be excluded from this) prevents "griefing" all over while making things interesting on faction turf with some sort of local punishment system.

At least, that is my ideal "solution" or compromise but you can bet we won't see prison mechanics.

    Because "hot iron".

MookMcMook reacted to Vorengard in Types of Colonization ships
Until we know more about the types of resources found in certain biomes, and the extent to which important elements can only be made with rare resources, we can't really judge how complicated colonization will be. However, given that players are capable of constructing most things themselves (or the elements needed to do those things they can't do themselves) then you don't really need much to colonize a planet besides yourself. Just fly there and start scanning down the basic resources necessary to building up a basic infrastructure, just like Minecraft. Major colonization pushes don't seem like a thing that will happen much in DU.

However, I'm sure that after a few years there will be big colonization or assault ships stocked full of resources, constructs, and pre-made bases for invading enemy planets, or for colony races to newly opened systems.

There is really no "maybe". JC said the game is complicated and wil lbe complciated and that you need training to crtaft anything (EVE style training) to make anything. If you can't make it, you can buy it from someone who made it and put it up for sale.

He said these things in Markeedragon's channel, I would not take Markeedreagon as a the EVE Carebear role-model.

Elements are just 3D mesh objects. There is no "voxel element".

Also, 3D mesh objects (Elements) have Schematics, constructs have Blueprints.

    @GunDeva

Von Neumann spaceships are not a certainty.

Also, 3D printers are NOT Factory Units. They are different things. 3D printers are meant to print 3D Mesh Elements and items, Factory Units are meant to replicate Bluperints put into them (and linked to materials, of coruse). For all we know, Factory Units could be a Static Core thing only. So, you have more chances going to a new planet o na regular ship and just bring on that ship the essentials, Rez Nodes, Power and / or some stored Elements to get your base going.

Also, JC Baillie in one of the tutorial videos, has explained that Territory Claim Units won't be " a dime a dozen ", so do not build up hopes of claiminfg a piece of land and keeping it without some numbers behind you. Gotta be brutally honest here, lone wolves die out fast.
