Hello all,
 
I am fairly new to DU, as I just got Alpha access and have only one real test session under my belt. I have been following the game for years, however, intrigued by the possibilities it offers. As I have been thinking more and more about the game and what role I want to play in it, I have come to the realization that there is so much more to build in DU than just ships and bases, and one of the things that DU will let us build is a society, with its own culture and unique characteristics.
 
Many people have already started to build those intangible elements that make up a society or culture. There are religious organizations, political organizations, etc. These are things that have a structure you can't see, and yet are just as important to a society as cities and space ships. We all know this game will force us to cooperate, and these kinds of "social constructs" will provide a way to do this.
 
What I want to build is similar, but different in some ways. It will be an organization dedicated to not politics or religion, but to philosophy. I am a practicing Stoic (stoicism is a branch of hellenistic philosophy, originating in Athens 300 B.C), and as such have a strong interest in philosophy, especially Stoicism. Stoicism is a philosophy whose adherents believe that nothing is within their control except their own actions and reactions, and that such actions and reactions should be carried out with courage, wisdom, temperance, and justice. Stoics also believe that all things are connected, especially all people, and therefore all people should be treated well. Lastly, Stoicism teaches that to live a good life, you must accept what is not in your control and strive to live virtuously regardless of external circumstances or events.
 
In ancient times, philosophers would have physical schools of philosophy to teach their philosophy of life to students. With the rise of Christianity in the Roman Empire, those schools became obsolete as the Church dictated how people should live instead.
 
I want to bring the school of Stoic philosophy into DU.
 
This is how I want to do this: 
 
First of all, I am not a philosopher, but a student of philosophy, therefore I will defer to the ancient and modern Stoic philosophers to do the actual teaching. Otherwise, I want to build a mecca of philosophy in the DU world. It will be a non-religious temple dedicated to philosophy, if that makes sense. This place will have monuments to the great philosophers as well as resources for those wanting to learn. I imagine screens lit up with stoic wisdom everywhere you turn and some amazing architecture to make the place a tourist destination. It will become a cultural phenomenon and touchstone, even help define the culture inside DU just as the schools of philosophy defined the culture of Ancient Rome. At worst it will be a spectacle that travelers will come to see, and at best it will help spread wisdom throughout the DU population.
 
In order to build such a structure, I will need help. I will need miners, architects, builders, ship builders, and more. I will need people to help flesh out this vision, too. If anyone is interested in joining me on this venture, or joining an organization dedicated to philosophy and stoicism, please respond. I haven't created the org yet, but I will as soon as I see that there is enough interest.

The Order of Meru
 
 
I am often asked "What is Meru?",  "What does it mean?", "What is the backstory?", "What do you plan to do with Meru?", "Why would there be a religion in Dual Universe?"
 
So I decided to finally put some of those questions to rest in the form of a series of stories taking place in what I imagine to be a distant future of Dual Universe, while also maintaining some artistic license to stretch the boundaries of what we know of as "Dual Universe" today. There are no aliens in the stories that will comprise this series, and I've tried to adhere to the rules of fan fiction for DU.
 
 
 
I don't know how long this series will go on for, but don't expect to have any questions answered in any straightforward manner for at least the first several posts. Some posts will be very short, and others will go on for several pages. I apologize ahead of time for the inconsistency in length. 
 
The series will begin very slowly, expect parts to end abruptly. Expect questions to be left open for quite some time. Expect plotlines to jump in ways that are hard to follow. Expect characters to not be touched upon again for many updates. Expect typos. Expect to be confused. Expect sporadic updates (writing is hard, yo). As time goes on, things will come together, be patient.
 
As the game comes out, I will go back and update parts of the story to match the game more closely. For example, there will be mentions of materials that don't actually exist in the game, simply because we don't know that much about the game so far. I hope that the narrative around the terms which I've made up will help explain what I'm going for when making up a material.
 
 
 
I've heard people have banned their org members from joining Meru only because they don't understand what it actually is. It's humorous to me that they feel threatened by Meru, but maybe this will shed some light to alleviate some fears. Perhaps as time goes on, these stories will also help explain why I believe Meru goes beyond the current understanding of what an organization is, and can be. More importantly to me, perhaps people will stop considering Meru a threat and see it as a path in the game some people want to follow at worst.
 
 
 
* I am also open to working with others on these stories and integrating their org backgrounds into everything. I know everyone wants to do things their own way though, and I'm okay with that too.

After a bit of a hiatus for -reasons- I am pressing forward with continuing the development of a Dual Universe specific online radio station. 
 
This is being done under the banner of the in-game organization, "Alioth Broadcasting Corporation"
 
I am currently working with one other person making this a reality, and we currently have a radio stream running for demo purposes that has the following capabilities:
 
24/7 Broadcasting AutoDJ'd playlists  Scheduled DJ's (where DJ's can login during their assigned timeslots for live broadcasting) Real-time Album Art Retrieval  
The general things one would expect from an online radio stream.
 
My wife, who is super awesome, is currently working on a website for people who want to listen live on the web as well. This should be ready within a few days, but ongoing modifications will be made to it to add features like album artwork refreshing in real-time and an interactive schedule for shows. I also plan on eventually adding archived shows automatically, though that may not be ready for some time. 
 
 
All of that being said, the station is not ready for mass consumption, as we have several things we want to get in place before we give it out to the world. Which brings me to the purpose of this post.
 
We are currently looking for people who would like to contribute, more specifically the following: 
 
#1 priority at the moment for me is finding an artist who would like to help make logos (for the website, as well as the mobile apps) We are taking submissions of all types of content, and anyone who has music/shows/podcasts/commercials/whatever is welcome to submit content that will be broadcast on the station. This includes recruitment advertisements from ANY organizations (must be safe for work).  We are taking applications for people who would be interested in dj'ing live on the station, this is not limited to music but also anyone who might want to run a talk show or anything along those lines. Again, any organizations are welcome to take part in this. If you want an hour-long show talking about your org every week, you are more than welcome to do so.   
 
I am currently working on an iOS application (DUFM) that will make its way into the App store where you can listen to the station live on your iOS devices. In conjunction with this work, an Android application is also being developed. When both applications are ready for distribution, I will work on getting them into their respective app stores for downloading. They will remain 100% free forever. I estimate they should be ready for distribution before the end of the month, perhaps sooner if we can get the artwork squared away. Honestly, the only thing holding them back at the moment is artwork that needs to be created or modified. 
 
 
All of this is being done for the community for free, I will not charge for publishing content, nor will I charge anyone to listen to the station ever. I won't accept donations for this either. The purpose of this isn't to make money, it's to bring audio content to the community. I would like for this to be a community-driven thing, hence anyone being allowed to submit content for broadcasting. I will not charge money (real or in-game) for ads being published on the station either. I'm not here to make a quick buck off people in any form.
