    A Firm Foundation
Empires. Armies. Nations. The ambition of the Novean population leads them to lofty goals. But from the moment they're awakened from cryosleep, those goals will be as distant as the stars they've just traversed.

Volant Transtellar approaches this new world with the humility of our situation in mind. As a company, and as a wider populace. Our immediate goal is to provide the foundations of Novean society. Resources, infrastructure, training. Before mighty vessels can ply the spacelanes, trucks and buses must ply the roads. Simple aircraft must deliver citizens to their duties. A strong economy must begin at the bottom before it can rise.

    A Vanguard to Dreams
VTI needs you. It needs your drive, your creativity, and your spirit as a builder. Before the lofty dreams of a new world can grow the simple work of sowing its fields must be done. VTI has no aim to be at the forefront of armies, or atop the halls of power. VTI, and you with us, will be the pavement on every street, the wings of every flight, the strength of every tool and the comfort of every home.

Where other organizations strive always to be at the top, VTI strives always to be at the bottom. The underpinning that holds aloft the dreams of our peers.

    Angled Ever Upward
If you are an individual with a need to build, and a passion to hold aloft your fellows, then Volant needs you. Whatever experience you bring will be welcomed with open arms. If you bring nothing with you but the spark of a creator, Volant is here to give you the tools and understanding you need to succeed.

If you're the leader of an extant Organization, Volant can use you as well. We are always on the lookout for new leaders and new potential. Your Org could be welcome into ours, and retain much of your autonomy and flexibility as we strive towards our common goal. We're also always on the lookout for subsidiaries to aid our endeavors.

    Volant Transtellar.
    Rise with us, wings outspread.
    And lift the world behind.

I'm happy to have pledged. This game can be my dream come true and "I want to believe" ® . It is the kind of game I wanted to do when I was a young engineer (this, and Paradox marvellous game engines). Now I'm still working on computer systems as a project manager.

I played in space since Elite ("first of his name") and never really go far far away from this kind of game. Currently on Elite:Dangerous and Stellaris. My favorite TV show is Firefly. But my real drug is persistent singleshard multiplayer sandbox game. What a coincidence ...

DU is a promising mix of Second Life, Wurm Online, Scrap Mechanic and Eve Online, which I played too but they all lack of something. I hope to find everything here (I really hope because the pledge hurts a bit).

Armedwithwings reacted to Kurock in Question on losing inventory upon death
When you die in DU you lose your inventory (half disappears and half is lootable) but keep your quanta and your master blueprints. (At least that was the original plan from NQ)

Lootablilty of DACs is a sticky topic. Originally NQ said they would *not* be lootable and there was a loud disproportional stink about it. So this has been discussed before...at length. You can wade though that topic here:

A point that was raised is that someone paid real money for the DAC and then it got stolen. Let's repeat that: A player paid for something and got no return for it. NQ is ethically and morally bound not to allow that. And no, crying "git good noob" does not somehow make that OK.

    Solutions:
The EvE system to bank PLEX is one solution but will take precious dev time. Another that was suggested is that DACs are unlootable until they are sold for the first time. The effect of this is that hoarding in-game bought DACs carry an inherent risk which I have no issue with. A player can pop them immediately for time or accept the risk of keeping them.

Armedwithwings reacted to AzureSkye in Sugar, Spice, and everything worth killing for: Food
After the rather poor reception of my propose sleep mechanic and more research into combat, I feel I can offer a unique spin on the idea of Food.

First and foremost: Food should not be required to survive. This is not a Hard Core survival sim (though I wish it were, sometimes).

    My proposal is thus:
Food will give bonuses/maluses to stats. These bonuses/maluses will be in the single digit percentage ranges and will cover a few skills at a time, with one primary. (+5% shooting, +2% reload, +1% crafting, +1% dodge) Food items can be combined to improve their "taste" and the bonuses given. (For example: Raw Wheat will give a small malus, raw flour will give a malus, but a cake will give a bonus.) All food items will have "taste" profiles and modifiers. The profile determines what "taste" is added when combined, while the modifiers alter the "taste" of the other ingredients. (This will probably be best displayed as a radar plot) All players will have a randomly generated "palate" that slowly and randomly evolves over time. This "palate" determines how much of a bonus is gained from the food. "Tasty" foods give bigger bonuses, "nasty" foods give maluses. It will take years before a "palate" noticeably changes. This will be shown in the UI when a food is selected. (General Bonuses * Palate modifier = Actual bonuses) Bonuses will last for 3-4 hours, with a slight increase during the first hour and then a steady drop off afterwards. Maluses will only last for 30 minutes and quickly decrease. Every food has a "satiety" value. You can only eat so much before you are full. Once you are full, further eating adds Maluses, rather than stacking Bonuses. The more you eat, the longer the bonuses last. Spices will exist that have small "satiety" levels and limited "taste" profiles, but they will have large "taste" modifiers. (Don't like savory foods? Add cayenne pepper! Make it spicy!) Finally, all plants will take months to grow and harvest, however between planting and harvest, the plants will require minimal supervision. They'll require more supervisor the less friendly the climate is to that plant. Harvests will produce a great quantity of food. (Farmer's should be able to explore the universe too!)
    The purpose here is many-fold:
To encourage economic activity by creating an intuitive category of good. Most people understand food and how good eating is good for them. This idea is focused on organizations as the primary producers and consumers. A solo pilot isn't going to mind being a few percentages slower at mining, or reloading, or crafting. But on the industrial scale of large organizations, these foods will be very important to squeeze out every Quantum. Wars have been fought over spices and I see no reason DU can't be the same. I've always disliked games where plants grew very rapidly. To gather a large stockpile, you were constantly running from plot to plot, planting and then you only have a few hours before you need to go harvest everything. Plants take time and care. Insta-plants aren't fun. The random element to the food is because a) everyone likes different things, and b ) this way there will be no "best" plant. What's in demand will change with the seasons and the years.
    (P.S: Wooo! 100th Post!)

I doubt anyone will even bother with taking over the entire planet using TUs, when you only need to prevent others from coming there, first by force and then by reputation.
Let´s say planet is colonized by 20 smaller organizations. These eventually start fighting and one by one they are destroyed by their enemies, until only few remain. I think this will take really long time to happen and it will still be a long way to world domination from there.
But when it happens and planet will be claimed by one organization, said organization will be strong enough to keep everyone from the planet. Of course, someone may slip through the defenses, but you can´t hide somewhere forever. If those few players are found, there will be nothing preventing said huge organization from declaring war and obliterating them easily.
In the end, nobody will dare to enter that planet without permission of the organization, unless they are some sort of spies or secret forces of their enemies that will be sent there before major war begins.
Keeping TUs active can end up being costly thing and I doubt anyone would willingly spend all those resources just to keep random forest tile on the planet under their empire, when nobody would dare to come there anyway.

Agree, can't add more than this. For example a very large org that "finds" an entire solar system: It will work to ensure it keeps not only "first dibs" but "all dibs" after constructing a Star Gate.

That said, the power of encouraging a colonizing players who LOVE building may throw another layer of complexity to that initial simple picture.

It basically comes down to preference, not (solely) pros and cons if I think about it. On one end of the spectrum you have the "hardcore survival crowd" and on the other, the ones with a more casual or hassle-free mindset in that regard.

I doubt you can change many stances solely through debate (here). I think it kinda boils down to "how many are in favor, against or indifferent about it and what would NQ's state be about it.

I for one can only suggest a survival system where you have to eat maybe 1 to 2 times per real day. Or 3 maybe. By that I mean played time. A good balance can surely be found.

But why am I in favor of it?

    1) Challenges. This adds another layer to the game. As trivial as eating may sound, it adds logistics and planning and in some situations maybe reliance on others.

    2) Jobs. Farming, industry and maybe a further options to use some stuff for chemicals and further refining. Or beer brewing. If food items are planned without survival, adding survival (to be precise, need to eat)  would make all those objects more useful beyond "fluff or buff".

    3) Other stuff I can't think of right now and stay is not covered by 1 or 2

The need to eat could open a whole new market and I think this is not too much to ask for if you have to use various items only a few times per day (real hours).

You could make it happen granted you have a bazzilion worth of resources to upkeep every single TCU of every planetary tile.
But given the size of a planet this is something of a Heruclian feat and very counterproductive.
Keep in mind that it would take hundreds of people just to utilize every single block - a huge sacrifice with minimal benefits.

Eventually, orgs will be able to 'control' planets and maybe even a system. All they need is enough presence/manpower/resources to push all contendors off the planet. They don't need to cover the whole planet in TUnits. And I don't see NQ stepping in at all because someone complaint that its unfair that an org owns x planet.
