Soarnir reacted to yamamushi in Third party authentication security
The fearmongering being spread through this thread is a bit disingenuous considering that nobody actually asked me how the authentication actually works or what is being collected (regardless of the fact that all of it is open source and available for anyone to look at).

So I will break it down here.

It doesn't matter if you know how the hash is generated, in fact, I'll tell you that it's an MD5 sum of the Discord User ID. Having a way of generating a users hash does absolutely nothing for you trying to authenticate as them against the forums because a hash is tied to a specific Discord ID. The auth tool generates the hash for a user (from their ID) entering a command and validates the hash on the forum against it. Even if you know another user's hashed ID, you're not going to be able to do anything with it. Many people have connected their discord accounts to their forum accounts and have left their hashes up publicly.  Again, a hash by itself is useless.  Unless you have access to the bot by changing its source code and somehow breaking into the container that it's being hosted from, you're not going to get the bot to accept someone else's hash against your own discord id. And if you were going to go to all those lengths, you may as well change the source code to just give you the roles without having to auth at all.  The only way someone is going to link to a profile that isn't theirs is if someone convinces another person to post that message on the forums on their behalf, which would be akin to sharing your password or account with someone.  Manual verification of ATV status and pledge statuses has been going on for far longer than any of the auth bots have been around for other Discord's that are out there. The only thing the auth bot does is makes it an automatic process. Someone could just have easily taken advantage of the manual verification by having someone else send a message on their behalf.  The only things being saved are the forum profile links and the pledge statuses (if made public on the forums). If you don't want your pledge status tracked (which only gives out colored roles to founder pack backers) then make your pledge status private on the forums. We're not saving anything that you're not already giving away by virtue of having a public profile on the forums. And this is only if you go through the account linking process. We are not scraping the forums collecting data on anyone who has not explicitly agreed to it by using the auth tool and running the ~linkprofile command.  If you're concerned about what is being stored, again the source code is all open for anyone to look at (and more importantly, submit patches) here https://github.com/yamamushi/du-discordbot
I've been working on a phone app for Dual Universe, but considering how much people complain (and it's always the same people) about everything else I get involved in for whatever reasons, I'm not really sure I want to continue at this point.

    Hi everyone,

    @namco:
As you are new to the forum, This is the first warning.
As you are supposed to have read the forum rules before posting, please respect them.
If you don't know where to find them, here is the topic.
Insulting other community members is not ok.
In the case you would insist in this behavior, it could result in a ban.
    Thank you for your understanding.

    @gyurka66, @Aesir & @namco:

Regarding "ramming ships", it's not planned to implement such mechanics, for two reasons (and not just one):
    1) This is not properly scalable (at least with current hardware tech & bandwith standards).
    2) This would cause game balance issues.

    To keep it simple:
We will only implement mechanics that are scalable and that can be balanced properly.
We won't implement anything that couldn't be scalable when applied to thousands of constructs and/or people concentrated in a small area. Unfortunately, Physics applied to voxels are among the things that enter this category. So no ramming ships.
We won't implement anything that could be abused for griefing or unbalanced gameplay. Even if the technical obstacle mentioned above is solved, it's already well known that some people will install some engines on some big rocks and will use it as cheap mass destruction weapons with little to no solution to protect against, with no risk taken for the aggressor. We won't implement game mechanics that unbalance the "risk vs reward" concept. So no ramming ships. About the "why cpu is used, why not gpu?".
Yes a lot of things are calculated by gpus nowadays, physics included... when it's related to 3D meshes.
However, everything related to voxels are still (mostly) calculated with the cpu, and this includes physics applied to voxels. That's why it's necessary to have a decent cpu, with AVX support. If new generations of gpus start to be more "voxel friendly" then it might change some aspects of the problem, but for now it's just wishful thinking.

Also keep in mind that servers have a cost, and the servers we need are not cheap.
Some games can be hosted on servers that aren't really expensive. Unfortunately Dual Universe doesn't enter in this category.
Even if adding gpus was a viable solution, the cost should remain reasonable if players don't want to see the monthly subscription rise accordingly.

As this idea has been discussed several times, with the same answer, this thread is going to be locked.

Soarnir reacted to NQ-Nyzaltar in Paris Games Week 2017
    Hi everyone,

Unfortunately, the PGW website is correct: we won't be at the Paris Games Week this year

One of the main reason is the time needed to prepare a proper demo version in "local mode". Each time we go to an event, we have to dedicate a significant part of the team to release a "Demo" version of the game. As relying on a decent internet connection isn't realistic, it implies to make a customized version of the game to make it work with LAN settings. As you can imagine, it's not a trivial matter.

Making demo versions for Gamescom and PAX West was a necessity. However, it slowed down significantly for a few weeks improvements of the game itself. As we want to limit extra delays due to this kind of branching, and as presenting an old Demo version wouldn't make sense (because the game has progressed so much during the past months), we decided to avoid presenting Dual Universe at the Paris Games Week 2017 and focus on the game development.

However, we plan to organize an "Open Doors" event (less time consuming for the team) before the end of the year. We will announce it in the coming weeks, well in advance, to let interested community members enough margin to manage their time table if they want to attend this event.

    Best Regards,
    Nyzaltar.

Soarnir reacted to NQ-Nyzaltar in Dual Universe Pre Alpha Tutorial: Tool & UI Basics | October 2017
    Hi everyone,

As some of you were wondering a bit a bout this unannounced video, here are a few clarifications:
    - This is the first tutorial video regarding Pre-Alpha gameplay.
    - What is in it is subject to change quite significantly in the near future (with community feedback and also several changes already planned). Also, as the Pre-Alpha test sessions are still quite limited for the time being, we prefer to see Pre-Alpha tester focusing on testing what's in game instead of recording videos to make tutorials that would become quickly obsolete (you will have all the time to do your own tutorials in Alpha, when UI will be not far from being in its definitive version).
    - Releasing publicly this video wasn't a mistake. It was done on purpose: we are aware that a lot of backers didn't have (yet) the opportunity to have access to the game, so it seemed to us it was necessary to give them some preview of the game mechanics currently in-game. Moreover, we hope this will help, in addition to the in-game tutorials - a lot of Pre-Alpha testers to master more quickly all the tools available.
    - While we considered not opening comments at first, we came to the conclusion that it would be better to allow them for a  public video. Comments are now opened on this video.
    - This video is not under NDA so the content can be used by other Youtubers.
    - This video doesn't replace the DevDiary of this month.
    - There will be other (shorter) Pre-Alpha tutorial videos soon (between today and tomorrow) to help Pre-Alpha testers grasping other game mechanics currently in play.

As this kind of topic has no legitimate reason to exist, it will be locked down.

    @LISPYxLUNA:

Welcome on the official Dual Universe forum.
However, even if you are new, you are supposed to have read the forum rules, posted here:
    https://board.dualthegame.com/index.php?/topic/8-forum-rules/

What you just did was exactly breaking the rule III.e: "Naming/accusing people".
Accusing publicly people on the official forum, for any reason or motive, is clearly not authorized.
If you have a problem with a community member, you can contact the customer support team to explain the problem.
Despite being attentive to all community concerns, in certain cases (like this one), the customer support team won't take any action.
The reason: the Unofficial Discord is managed by community members and the Novaquark team has decided from the very beginning to avoid any attempt to take control and/or police media managed by the community.

    Another broken rule:
As a general rule, it's not allowed to post any private conversation without the agreement of all involved parties.
Again, if you have a problem with a community member, you can contact the customer support team to explain the issue.

As a consequence, any unauthorized screenshot posted publicly regarding a private conversation has been removed from this topic.
As you are new to the forum, this a first warning.
Please do not insist in this kind of behavior.

    Thank you for your understanding.

    Nyzaltar.

I have just been given a job opportunity so I'm taking full advantage of it.

Anyway, down to the charts and the numbers,
After the drop of Cinderfalls numbers we are seeing the numbers spread out to new organizations, this is seen below. Whilst the overall numbers haven't grown some organizations have greatly gained from this membership shuffle.
There isn't too much to say, no big jumps, just steady growth and redistribution, but I must congratulate Frogswarm on one hundred members!

    Hey there folks!
Hope you're all having a wonderful day waiting for the Alpha Tests to start.

This week has been a long and news filled one, whilst I don't track it, several larger organizations have dropped their association with Cinderfall Syndicate, as well as this the Cinderfalls numbers have plummeted, the have lost 87 members between last Saturday and this Saturday. Whether this is a planned purge, move or people are going with their external organizations, this is yet to be seen or announced. A few key members of Cinderfall also dropped from the organization. This being said, the total top ten members have dropped by 54, with the unique count also dropping by 22.

It seems Terran Union, Band of Outlaws and GLSU have all gained small member amounts from this large event (or other more natural recruitment drives).

So, heres todays charts! Yes, now multiple!

I added a few things, A total members over time graph, a total gain per day for the top ten and then an organization member number contribution!

I also changed a few colours.
Empire is now a light-ish blue.
The Aether is now a light red/pink.

These colours are chosen based on the fact that they need to be different from others, not related to their official colours.

Terran Union has solidified a lead as the number one org (in terms of numbers) on the community site over night.

Well, wether you like it or not, the "single shard" expression isn't born yesterday and hasn't been invented by us, as it has been used for more than a decade in the video game industry, and has been widely spread with EVE Online.

Edit: According to wikipedia, a "Shard" can be used to designate a database architecture OR a game server (which can be hosted on several computers).

Hi Dehkur and welcome on the Dual Universe official forum.

Nowhere it has been said this will be hosted on a single computer.
It has been said it will be hosted on a single server.
Are you not confusing the words "server" and "computer"?
A server can be hosted on a cluster composed of many computers.
And for Dual Universe, this is definitely the case.

    Hi everyone,

Here is a (small) overdue update about the Lore:

    Lore Update (2 Oct. 2017):

UMF (United Mankind Federation) becomes UEF (United Earth Federation).  From a Lore point of view, the testing phases including Alpha and Beta stages are considered in the Lore as virtual simulation run by Aphelia while the Alpha Team members are asleep (note: Pre-Alpha stage is not considered as part of the Lore) The in-game money will the “Quanta” (one Quanta, several Quantas). “Novean” is the term to name a passenger of the Arkship “Novark”.
P.S: regarding potential inconsistency between Nanopack rarity and the way a Player Character is resurrected, it's possible we will go with the solution "By naked, we mean, everything else than what you had before you leaving the Arkship". However, this is still in discussion. We'll keep you informed about the final decision

    Hello fellow conscious being,

As of the writing of this post, I’ve been a part of the DU community for 366 days (since 12th September 2016) (allowing for time dilation), the early Kickstarter days of DU. Although that is certainly not an achievement compared to many others of this community who have been here for two years or more, I have seen the good the bad and the ugly of this community, the former of which has been the most prevalent to me. I’d like to take a couple minutes of your time to both finally introduce myself on the forums, and to provide a commentary on my experiences with this awesome community.

My name in this virtual universe is Soarnir, I found Dual Universe through the Kickstarter campaign while casually browsing through the games section of the website. The name was catchy and the goal was interesting, one click later and I’m reading through the entire page, enthralled by the prospect of a video game dream coming true. I wanted to know more, see how far the game had come, what the community was like. A couple seconds later and I find the forums and the community site. Impressing me was the development so far, that the meta was so evolved was astounding to me, especially for a game that no one would be able to touch for several months (in regard to the planned Alpha date then). I create an account on the community site on the 12th September 2016, and it really just escalates from there.

Perhaps I should introduce parts of the real me as well. I'm a gamer, through and through, I've hardly lived long enough to have experienced every type of game there is, but to say I have little experience would be a lie. I started fiddling with computers and hardware before I was 10, and built my first PC not long after that, all the while starting to learn the basics of programming by sitting in my school library reading through giant textbooks for different programming languages. Attempting to keep up my interest ever since, I've now got a fairly broad, yet limited at times, experience covering Java, web development, databases and server management. I have run several communities over the years, including old minecraft servers back in the beta days, helped manage forums and administrate/moderate several discord communities. I'd hardly argue I'm great, but I'm good at what I do, and I do my utmost to be approachable and attentive (even when people refer to me as the devil) of server chemistry as people grow to enjoy being a part of it. Now I'm in the midst of my gap year after graduating, and sleeping to 9+am for over a few months really does make you incredibly relaxed. But that's enough of that, let's talk DU and my experiences with the community.

Having used discord for over a year prior to finding DU, I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was an unofficial community one already up and running, and it becomes the first DU oriented discord I join, in the midst of the Kickstarter, no less. As you can imagine, and most of you recall, it was hectic. Nail biting, chart checking, the continuous discussion in every discord every day. The amazing contributions from many community members already being prevalent during this time, people reaching out to friends and contacts, getting people hyped more and more. New creations, videos, art, content, and more. It was absolutely stunning and thrilling at the same time.

In the midst of all of this, I find Cinderfall, or rather, their recruitment message on the unofficial DU discord, and the community site. Seeing that it was already fairly established, as well as connected to a large number of orgs, I decided that if I wanted to get into the proper political meta of the game, this is where I should start. I send an application on the community site and join the discord to be greeted immediately by Neopolitan and Astrophil, the directors of CSYN at the time. What I see is a truly impressive sight, over 10 organizations already established, taking part in an organizational umbrella, months before any kind of game will be released. A couple weeks later after several discussions and interviews, I'm one of Cinderfall's new magistrates, in charge of diplomatic action and the Grand Assembly. Being a part of such a politically involved entity and helping it grow has been a remarkable experience. Allowing for a couple events that transpired afterwards, like the ever famous Battle of Poolamoo (#neverforget) and some pretty hefty changes to the way CSYN operates, as well as several mistakes and learning experiences thrown into the mix. Cut to a few months ago, when I officially become Cinderfall's newest Director, an achievement for me, and a promise to continue to work to my utmost in all situations.

Alongside my work in CSYN, I've helped moderate and administrate the unofficial community discord since March 2017 as well as worked on a discord bot which was released in a new form less than a week ago.

I'd like to end on a tribute to the developers, NovaQuark, for helping foster this absolutely amazing community. I thank you graciously for showing the world that transparency truly is the key to winning over your players' hearts and that despite what other companies decide to do, you've proven that it is a healthy and sustainable model for developer-player interaction. I want to thank you for your incredible perseverance in a post-no man's sky world, and I applaud you for the way you've handled everything that's come in your way so far. I look forward with even greater enthusiasm than ever, to your continued support of the community.

    Thanks,

    Thanks,
    Soarnir
