ATMLVE reacted to Lethys in Once Again.... The Reddit Community
As I already said in that other thread:
It's a shame that the other reddit is run by someone clearly not interested in the DU community at all. But imho it will work out - ppl will use the most active and best reddit, just takes time.

Problem here is, as others said, that ppl could possibly be driven away pre/post alpha from DU because of a bad reddit. Then again they aren't THAT interested anyway if such a thing clouds their minds.....

Once open Beta hits it won't be much of a PR issue anymore

And I don't understand why people only read half the posts:

So I really don't get why you think I'm only concerned with my personal preference.
And no, outside of the arkzone (which is 10km radius! - so noobs will see THAT zone FIRST) there shouldn't be any restrictions because there players should handle it, like many many ppl already said:

I'm just not a fan of moderating everything in a sandbox - if you don't like something ingame, clean it up yourself. If you think some group is too dangerous or toxic, organize resistance. If you think some building is ugly, tear it down yourself.
Yes that all implies work and effort on your part, a sandbox isn't a theme park where things are handed to you for free - if you want to get something done, you have to do it yourself

ATMLVE got a reaction from Kurock in Repairing Large ships, from the inside
There are actually some details on repairing ships already. During the GDC interview in February, JC was asked this question. He said that there will be elements which can repair constructs based on their original blueprint; as in, the repair unit is aware of what the construct is supposed to look like, and can gradually restore the construct back to that state.

We have two sprinklers watering a lawn:
There's one that's clearly superior. It can spread water further and faster and isn't going to break any time soon. It doesn't leak and is very reliable.
The inferior sprinkler is just terrible: short range, leaky nozzle, grinds gears, taints the water, and looks in bad shape.

But there's a problem: the inferior sprinkler is further up the line than the superior one. The inferior sprinkler is using pretty much all the water and the superior sprinkler is getting barely anything. With no pressure for the better sprinkler, it's unable to shoot much more than a dribble.

As a result, part of lawn is being poisoned and will die. The other part gets no water, and will die. The obvious solution is to get rid of the inferior sprinkler, unfortunately, the line appears to be set in concrete a few inches below the ground.

That's the issue we all face here.

The last time I brought this up, the person in question was quick to show up here to try and defend themselves for leaving the subreddit in such a poor shape, but as of now that person has been suspended from Reddit and the subreddit has once again become neglected (could have predicted that...)

So, again, I am posting this to point people towards the better subreddit -> https://www.reddit.com/r/dualthegame/  (I'm not a mod there)

The other one was seemingly completely abandoned, with a 10-day old Reddit account currently "in charge" of it and a bot account put in to keep people from trying to request it from /r/redditrequest.

Why am I bringing this up, again?

Because the success of Dual Universe depends entirely on the community and the way that it is reflected in various forms around the gaming world. It's hard to argue that Reddit doesn't have an impact on games, and there are plenty of vibrant Reddit Gaming communities out there that interact back and forth with devs and give the impression that their games are healthy (full of players) and still active.

If a random user were to come across /r/dualuniverse, they'd see months old posts sitting around, a completely unresponsive mod team, and a sidebar that to this day is full of incorrect information (the old mod refused to remove No Man's Sky as a related subreddit, for example).

That's a disappointment because of the work that the /r/dualthegame mods put into making their subreddit active and accurate, yet because one person buried their head in the sand and refused to lift a finger for their subreddit, /r/dualuniverse is going to continue to get more traffic and subscribers regardless of how bad it is.

    So why post this?

Because if we want DU to survive into the future, and to continue growing and be seen as an active community, we should do our part to continue directing people to what is the best reflection on it (and /r/dualuniverse is not it).

So if you're on Reddit, or you know Redditors who are into Dual Universe, point them towards /r/dualthegame.

And to the person responsible for the mess that is /r/dualuniverse, you should feel ashamed of yourself for leaving this stain on the community. Plenty of people reached out to you asking you to fix the subreddit, instead you wanted to feel this imaginary power over the community, refused to do anything about the mess you left, spread a bunch of misinformation about me on the subreddit and discord, and then got yourself suspended from Reddit leaving the subreddit in the condition that it's in now.

Alright two things. First, I think this is too complex. Too many variables, too many factors. Some of these variables might affect others, which may I turn cause other values to change... Like, the feed rate would cause higher luminosity and noise, and then the flash hider might have to change... Such variables make for a coding nightmare. I personally feel that half of these are unnecessary forever. The other half are alright though.

The other thing is that engines may take fuel in different ways; electricity, radiation-ish from the sun... Fuel and energy is something Ive been looking for answers for for a long time and there still arent many. But we don't know for sure that all energy sources for engines will be voluminous fuel.

Despite those things, I would love for energy and fuel to be able to get really complex. I personally would like it to be that anyone can slap some engines on some voxels and fly around just fine, but then those willing can really really try, and do some math, and trial and error, and work with the complex engine system to create a very efficient ship.

ATMLVE got a reaction from dRopship in What Causes the Fall of Empires in a Single-Shard Universe?
I remember a while back reading about the Bloodbath of B-R5RB, which was the biggest battle ever fought in EVE Online, occuring in early 2014 and consisting of thousands and thousands of ships from two opposing alliances fighting over a single system. Upon looking up these factions recently, I was intrigued to find that some of them apparently no longer exist.

I then watched some related EVE videos, surfing comments, and found a really neat story of a guy who randomly met a pretty big faction leader and got invited to join that faction; someone else commented asking about the faction, but the guy responded that the faction had long since disbanded.

This stuff really got me interested in the mechanics of long-term organizations in Dual Universe. Why do factions rise and fall in EVE; what causes large forces to disband, and might those same causes affect organizations in DU? What is the main cause? Is it players getting bored, or traitors, or crap leadership, or people just wanting something new, that results in once fearsome coalitions falling apart into nothing?

The current numbers in DU orgs have been pretty steady; the largest orgs have stayed the largest, biggest names always on top. Nothing really changes, but that's because we don't have the game. Can we expect to see the Terran Union even in existence six months after launch? Or could it still be the largest ten years later; and regardless of whatever happens to it, what lead to it's lifespan being as long as it was?

TL;DR: What causes huge factions in EVE to fall, and how are those forces relatable to Dual Universe? What forces could cause DU empires to crumble away?

If you want ship ideas, I would totally check out this website. You can put it any combination of any characters and it will generate a ship based on that, which is a seed. Put in absolutely nothing, and you get a random ship every time. But, whats more fun is to put in text, and see what ship it generates, because you can put in that same text later and it will generate the same ship. I've found it neat for inspiration, and there are definitely some super awesome ones that can generate, but unfortunately I can't think of any right now. Anyway, try it out:

I've put in 100+ characters in the name field before and it will still use every character as a seed to generate a new ship; and the same ship every time for that seed. I think the number of ships it can generate is limited only by how many characters you're willing to type in.

Guns and weapons in DU don't work the same as they do in most other games. How specifically weapons as a whole will function is not completely finalized, but if they will be able to hit ground targets (including the ground itself) from space is something that would be weapon-specific, so there's no way to know yet how feasible it is. We would need more information on the mechanics of weapons, as well as how far from a planet you can be before being able to load it's surface features.

And no, the complete destruction of an entire planet has been directly addressed as being impossible.

As for ships damaging terrain... That's still up in the air-ish. The developers have said that collision damage will not be in the game due to server stress, but a fair point is that air traffic and landing will be a complete mess when someone can impact anything they want at 1000 km/hr with no repurcussions. You asked how the servers would be able to handle all this stress... Well they wouldn't very well if people are launching death stars at planets with collision damage.

ATMLVE got a reaction from Vorengard in Custom AI and how will they work?
Yes and no. Automation of certain features is very possible in Dual Universe. The combination of Lua and Interactive Elements will make for very interesting possibilities. Lua scripts themselves will be files on your personal computer that you call in the game, and youll have to be near them to run them. So, yes to everything you said, except the examples.

Both mining and defenses cannot be automated. Weapons and turrets will either be completely inoperable or at least very inefficient without direct player input. And mining can only be done by hand, there are no drills. Both of these limitations are put in place to preserve the integrity of the game. Automated turrets would allow one man to control a battleship, and automated mining would have a negative effect on the mining industry, and thus the game as a whole.

ATMLVE reacted to Lethys in Languages translate as the first game in the world..
Well to me there is a very simple solution to that: just make your own org in your language. Nothing has to be english there. People would only need to learn the interface and the game's descriptions - which is a doable job with Google translate and a little bit of thinking.

If you want to play in a Danish org - be our guest and please do so. Organize yourself and get it going.

But don't expect others to speak your language or translate something for you.

If someone can't read the forum...well even smartphones can translate nowadays. So I really don't see an issue here

Hello everyone, this is Shockeray, GM of Soul Nebula.

After waiting for an updated version of the original community map to show itself on the forums for a long time, I finally took it on myself to create my own up-to-date version. After a lot of original set up, my method now requires little time and almost non-existent server strain, allowing me to refresh it many times a day if there ever was a reason to. Due to my limited knowledge of this type of undertaking, TheGreatSardini helped me with the start up. Unless I missed one, this map should contain every organization with at least two members.
(Although Graph Commons may not be the best available method of displaying this node map, it is the best that I have found available to the public.)

Hi Neolithic,   Most of your questions can find an answer if you read the FAQ and all explanations available on the Kickstarter page. While the Kickstarter campaign has ended almost everything regarding the Founder packs of the Kickstarter campaign remain true for the Post-Kickstarter Founder packs (minus exclusive Kickstarter rewards). So please, read everything there.    As for the "unusual" questions for the highest Tier - Packs:    - Can I start a family with a member of the Novaquark team?  Nope, you can't start a family with one or several members of the Novaquark team. That's not part of the deal.   - What does it really mean to spend a day or half day with JC and/or the team?  It means you can follow the daily life of the studio and discuss with Novaquark staff about Dual Universe for the time described in the pack. Nothing extraordinary here: it's a kind of reward that has already been seen several times in highest tiers of other crowdfunding campaign. Note: a full day is not 24h but a full working day.   - What if Novaquark staff is being attacked?  Anybody could be attacked. No one is safe. It takes courage from getting out of the bed every morning. It's part of life. If you want more details regarding the answer to life, the universe and everything, we suggest to meditate on the number 42 or try to find the supercomputer Deep Thought.    - What if Novaquark is hacked?  Same answer as for the question above.   - What if a DU Secret is exposed?  Those participating to a DU secret will be only aware of the secret they are involved in. Moreover, there will be a NDA on that topic. If someone want to blew up the DU secret he/she's involved in, he/she will be in for legal problems, without counting how he/she will be perceived by the community members, who will most likely not see this with a good eye. Not a very smart move and a very expensive joke, but that's just our opinion.   Best Regards,
    Nyzaltar.

Yeah a lot of the stuff that you are either ripping apart or praising, that stuff is real physical stuff. Hence why there are digital and normal version of a lot of the pledges; the digital has only digital items. Lethys has you on which stuff is physical.

And yes, a lot of that stuff is a lot of money. 7K for a game sure is a crap ton of money, more than I could imagine spending. But if someone were to spend 10 times as much money as that on a car, would you be surprised? People spend 70K on a car all the time, and I can tell you I cannot imagine spending 70k on a car either; but hey, lots of people do it. So there are a few people out there that have a unique interest in that they really like games rather than cars, and they have a good bit of money, so they are willing to spend some of it on a game. It's just someone with money to put where they want it, combined with a unique interest.

You wonder how JC (and yes, singular human, a mere mortal) would have enough time for all those phone calls... If there were so many people giving the team 1000 dollars/euros that finding time to talk to all of them would be difficult, I really don't think they would be complaining much.
"Confound it, ANOTHER person wants to give me 1000 bucks for an hour-long phone call... That's the 18th one this week!"
