What turns me off from the community is people like this...

In the same breath that they call someone "dog shit" for having "bias or feelings about how a game should be played"...they express their personal feelings for how a game should be played. Strongly.

    Calm. Down.

This isn't your personal game. You can't possibly speak for the devs.

This whole post drips in hypocrisy. "How dare you demand the game suits your needs...it should suit people like ME" is just...it sounds like a tantrum, frankly.

NQ's poor communication is a big reason people are so unreasonably angry.

They haven't really communicated a clear vision for PVP -- probably because they don't even know yet because the game is still in beta. There's many, many factors that will determine how PVP plays out from investors to server costs. It has jack to do with you.

If you're going to argue about something that is truly unknowable, at least do it with a shred of dignity.

If you aren't going to provide something useful to the forums, you're the one that should "please fuck off". It isn't helpful. It's just aimless rage.

Nothing absolute, no. Members of the ORG I'm part of have "Base jumped" between planets. Takes a while, though. Dropping off ships in orbit is relatively common, especially if the inbound vessel is being piloted by a noob (I was that noob) and might take a while to ease down (or go "pop" on re-entry; choose your highest-probability risk  ).

Just a wee bit of rage issues with you, maybe take some deep breaths and ease off the caps lock during your rant sessions.  I get the feeling your one of the guys calling for the "safe spaces" to be removed so everybody has to hide out on sanctuary to make free ships for you to loot when they try to leave.  Hey man, good luck with that ?.  No really, have fun with your blockade.

People liking different things isn't a crime. Space is supposed to be huge. This game is supposed to be huge. There's plenty of room for people that gain enjoyment from different styles of gameplay, especially since that's how the game was actually advertised. Not as a piracy sim, as a civilization sandbox. That implies some level of civilization.

These two concepts aren't mutually exclusive at all. Who cares if some people prefer to build instead of fight? Why should that bother anyone?

Similarly, I like the idea of a dangerous frontier where anything can happen. There's no reason why the game can't have both. It's called space for a reason.

It's 2020. If I want to be completely isolated in an underground moon lair I spend years carving out with a spoon, I think we can all understand.

Said no game company in history.  The game will be designed around those who buy a monthly subscription.  If it turns out to be people who avoid PVP like the plague, expect a lot more safe zones.  If the majority of players play solo or with a small group of friends, expect the game to develop around that.  Even if it cost others a bit of fun in the process.  This isn't an avant garde art project, this is a business.

Gankers and Griefers can make things interesting and add danger to a game that is mostly without active chaotic content (other than bugs).  But they are a extreme minority of the purchasing players.  Give them too much leeway and this game will be deader than Rubies of Eventide.

There is NO PVE other than fighting the laws of physics to get from planet to planet.  Period.  I doubt they could add a PVE element to the game even if they had any interest to.  So this game has to have a PVP aspect, there is no way around that or we will simply run out of content, quickly.  But it is a balancing act, and not an easy one.

Games like this attract wildly different interests.

Some people want to build and create. Some want to RP as a lonely miner or trader making a life in some quiet of the galaxy. Others want to be space pirates and live and die for competition and political conflict.

The challenge with PVP is that it can easily make every other interest or activity irrelevant or annoying...

If NQ wants to build a rust-style game because they believe player conflict will drive engagement, so be it...but then they can't really advertise it as a "build civilization and be whatever you want" sort of experience.

It's really silly all the people like "this isn't minecraft go play something else"...okay...? Sure, blame us for advertising this as a massive-scale build your own civilization game.

    1. Repeatedly saying "bad idea" without explanation isn't really providing anything useful lol -- I think by 'creative mode' the OP probably just means having some way to build and test constructs, not a full blown server running creative mode rules.

    2. There's a big difference between difficulty due to complexity vs. difficulty due to a lack of information / clunky presentation. Having a design mode to figure out how building works would motivate new players to grind the materials required. That doesn't make the game effortless or not rewarding.

    3. NQ should be open to any good idea, especially in regards to retaining new players. Arrogance isn't a good look in any community or business. Honestly considering an idea you initial dislike is a sign of intelligence...discarding an idea because "you say so" really isn't...

    4. This game is advertised as a sandbox. Creativity is a challenge that can never be "mastered". Helping people get to the point where they can actually enjoy the sandbox seems like a good idea to me. There's plenty of ways to do that other than a design / creative mode, but this part of the game needs major work. If this is supposed to be a cool space adventure where I can adopt any role and be any specialist, it'd be nice to see some of that potential even starting out -- vs. "actually no you're stuck on this moon and i hope you like digging and setting up the same factory as everyone else..."

I think the issue is larger than simple technicalities or even founded in applied sciences.

The issue is related to Humanities and and Sociology in my view. First of all this is a Game, we are all here to have fun, but at the same time this implies that there is no real consequences to one's actions, it is a game. No one really gets hurt. So this means that players will simply divide themselves between hunter and prey and go at it in many different ways as permitted by the mechanics of the game.

This will continue until the carnage reaches a certain threshold and it all explodes, it will be followed by Devs trying to address the problem and further alienate players left and right, until the game gains its reputation a a "niche" game, like EVE online...a Dystopia only good for "hardcore" people of a specific sort... or worse, just die, like so many other Sandox Games have because of the same mistakes repeated over and over...such as Darkfall for instance.

This has all happened before and it will happen again. I have seen it happen in so many MMORPG's since I play them, (and I play them since Ultima Online 1997)... but it does not have to be like that.

All this can be prevented provided that the Devs do not just expect players to Balance the in game life/society on their own like in real life. See in Real life real lives are lost, and people have an interest to engage in Diplomacy and Trade instead of War most of the time, or until some Narcissistic Sociopathic Leader charms their Troops to go on conquering their neighbors instead out of ambitions of grandeur, resulting in suffering pain and death.

But in games, there are no real consequences. Who wants to do diplomacy and Trade, and Building Civilisations when it is more fun to just destroy stuff and laugh at people raging? You can just engage in War until there is no one left, and move on to another game after that.

So in order for this game to be a long lived experience, that many want it to be (I am assuming Devs as well as many players), then of course there needs to be some basic rules in place, and the in-game society dynamics defined in such a way as to promote Civilization Building rather than total Anarchy and Constant Conflict out of which no Civilization in History has ever been built. Yes Civilizations have clashed in our bloody history, but before the Competition comes the Cooperation. Civilizations are built in Cooperation.

If the game remains an Anarchy in Space, and a Constant competition, no Civilizations will be Built. And then it will simply succeed in chasing away the Socializers the Explorers and Achievers, which are equally required for Civilization Building in Favor of only the Killers niche.

I hope it does not follow that path and does not make the same mistakes like so many others before it, it is still in BETA and many things can really change and be improved to ensure a good production release as a game with a positive and healthy foundation upon which Civilisations can be built in this futuristic Theme and with its amazing Technical capabilities, Voxel Technology etc.

It is not an easy thing to do, and a testament to this is all the Sandbox games that preceded it and failed no matter the theme, Fantasy or Futuristic.

    Cheers!

In DU 30K represents light speed, which is why it is impossible to get past 29,999. So if a rocket is able to track and hit you at that speed, it is doing something impossible. Or something that has an astronomically small chance of success to be more exact if the rocket is traveling towards the ship, instead of trying to catch it from behind which would be actually impossible (for any type of weapon, including laser).

And for me it keeps coming back to one word incentive. In the sense that DU has a pillar more important then any others, it is that it is a building game. That is the core technology of the game that everything else is built around. And so it makes sense that this game will attract more of the creative type people then your typical MMO. People from Landmark, Second Life, Minecraft etc. looking for something to bridge the creative side with a MMO. Which brings us back to incentive. Why would anyone put effort and energy into creating, when it can be easily torn down by anyone with a gun wanting to kill some spare time?

So don't misunderstand me. I am not arguing against PvP. But the rules of engagement has to be clear. And there has to be a balance of creation vs destruction. Having PvP weapons bend the laws of physics as established by the game, while builders (potentially in the near future) are limited to a single resource scarce sanctuary moon and a single STU per player. Is not an example of this.

I totally get that...but I think NQ could manage expectations far better.

They said "hey the game is now in public beta, come sign up for a subscription and play!" -- I think many players expected a more stable product in return for their money.

You can't really blame people for "expecting too much."

It was up to NQ to set those expectations and communicate the honest state of the game. How they present the product to the consumer is 100% up to them.

They could have called it a public alpha and not done so much press -- they still would have attracted a lot of new players for funding and testing, only without souring the first impressions for so many new people. They presented it as a beta with some bugs, not "help us be our alpha QA, and pay us for it please"...

It is a public launch -- no matter what label you slap on it, when you charge for a product and present it as being usable in your marketing, you can't blame the customer for being disappointed.

I will absolutely be coming back and playing ( yeah i paid for a year ? ) -- hopefully this influx gives NQ the funding they need, but I worry they're going to need to earn back the trust of a lot of players...and that instead of doing that they are going to dig in and become a super-niche product that never has the resources it needs.

Not everyone is in Discord for a host of reasons -- it's up to them to provide messaging on more than one channel. Can you imagine a real company being like "oh well we only talk about stuff in discord what are you doing on our forums or twitter?"

It's called "basic engagement with the community". They have time to post tweets to promote the game; they can post a simple announcement or acknowledgement here.

It's up to NQ to set expectations for the beta -- there's a big different between tolerating a few bugs and new player feeling like they can't even start the game.

Personally, I've had a few good experiences in the game. I can see how it has potential. I'm eager to keep trying. I can 100% understand how other customers won't be and how that will negatively affect the game.

"it's a beta, it's your fault for expecting a playable product in return for your cash" is not something I agree with.

"It's beta" is not the end-all excuse for poor communication and instability. It really sucks that people are like "it's your fault for buying a beta of course it isn't going to work right". That's not what people were expecting, and it is 100% reasonable to expect a somewhat playable product for the price vs. basic content like tutorials breaking and not being fixed for weeks!

DU isn't going to die, but it seems like NQ wants it become a really niche product.

Many people joining beta now have been following the game for years. These are the most interested, qualified customers they will ever have coming into the game.

They avoided alpha specifically because they wanted to wait until the game was at least somewhat playable. Instead they got a worse experience than alpha, apparently.

Beta shouldn't be less stable than alpha in any universe...and if they are, it should be a temporary issue due to hardware/infrastructure needing to scale which is an operation that takes minutes in 2020, not weeks. Instead, people are left to wonder and speculate that there's core problems with their technical design.

Has NQ even said anything about these problems?

All I see on their social channels are posts about how much fun people are having -- no mention of issues, timeline for fixes, or apologies. Generally no reply to anyone complaining in the comments. They didn't even bother with an apology in the email where they reset all our passwords.

I also have seen some people on these forums that just want to shut down anyone with anything critical to say about DU. If mods are also shutting people down on discord?

It isn't a good look for a community.

I get it if you are mad that people aren't seeing the game for all its potential...but NQ needs to at least say something about the problems people are having, never mind quickly fixing them as people would expect of an MMO at any public launch.

"Sorry we didn't expect it to be so popular, give us a week to fix things, and we'll credit every account 1 free week of playtime" would go a long, long way to keeping people interested and happy. Radio silence and trolly "loyal" fans is not really a winning strategy imo.

(if y'all alpha players that saw the game at its best really want to help NQ, be patient with new players especially if the issues are clearly NQ's fault)

michaelk reacted to TheSkyder in How long will it be before we can't catch up?
Not being able to catch up is not something you should be worried about at this time. Here are a couple of reasons why:
Most people are still setting up their first starting industries/bases (I still haven't left Sanctuary Moon yet) Not everyone can play all day long every day, and with the average age of the people in this game, I would suppose the majority are this way as we are working adults. Having a bunch of talent points stocked up for things you aren't going to use right away is either useless or by your design/build for your avatar. This game is a marathon not a sprint at all. Enjoy it, take it at your own pace, do not have FOMO or a bad case of Keeping up with the Jones' When you are able to start, join an organization, most likely they will have industry set up and ready for people to use that come into the game.  Money will come, and it will go.  I have spent my 100k each day to help accelerate the building of starting organization factory, I would assume most people are doing this or something like this, which means new members/new people to the game can very well still benefit from the daily stipend from the NQ overlords. Just a few of my thoughts about this because there have been plenty of times I felt this way when I couldn't play much during the 1 week closed beta. Really though once I took a step back and thought about it, what another person is doing right now in game really has no bearing on what I am doing because this game is so vast.
