friendlytyrant03 reacted to Ghoster in Urbanization won't be a thing in DU?
In real life cities are built for a number of reasons (duh!):
access to workplaces (income), shops (food, clothes, goods etc.), communication (internet), infrastructure (energy, water, waste disposing, public transportation), healthcare, leisure, etc.

These fundamental factors which contribute to urbanization IRL won't be pretty much present in DU. People will be spread around different organizations, cartels, syndicates, corporations, etc., maintaining their own infrastructure, energy grid, factories, landing/docking/building sites, defense systems, etc.

So I guess we won't be seeing large cities in DU, unless some very dedicated urbanists will be willing to design them just for the sake of design itself.

Don't get me wrong, I don't feel discouraged from playing DU in any aspect whatsoever, however I just realized the things I've written above and it kinda made me a little upset, that's all.

Or maybe I'm just plain wrong?

Well, as I said. By more means than one. It is indeed a bold claim, and I don't want the wrong impression to fall.

I'm going to achieve it by being like no other. By showing people how reward is not even half as important as what you've done to reach that reward. Call me a preacher, not so. The sad truth is, there are more pirates and smugglers then there are good men.

P.s I'm not referring to the faction COPS at all here.

Not if the rail is the thing providing the majority or all of the power. I would like us to be able to use the rails to make elevators as well (no not hover because that has limits granted so do rails but they are different limits) and if we can use them to make elevators than we will be able to build space elevators (yaaaa I really want a space elevator even if I have to build it myself)

Trains are cool, and would no doubt be easier to automate than ships or wheeled vehicles. I certainly hope they are included at some point.

So I was thinking, what if I could use those hovercraft engines and have some kind rail to go with it and use it to make some kind of maglev/monorail system. Imagine an intercity train system that can remove ships off the sky and decrease air traffic. or at least have one going around your city to go places faster so now ships can stop crashing into your buildings. I don't know what do you think?

If the game ends up being capable of having trains and subways and the like, I would love it. Seems like they should be much easier (tech research wise at least) to be able to create initially, and probably for more useful for moving large amounts of materials/people as compared to using multiple wheeled vehicles. Think having trains also adds a sense of realism and touch of character to our settlements and installations. Good idea, I hope that it's feasible

Even if I don't support circle-jerking, ring-worlds or as some great fictional general put it "God's Personal Anti Son of a Bitch weapons", would depend on how "wide" fragmented servers could be. Plus, you would need an INSANE amount of minerals to build a ringworld. There's a difference between "plausible" and "possible" gents.

You clearly don't understand how the logistics business works :V Nobody is gonna waste fuel, ordnance and/or people's time to demolish a planet "just cause". If someone irritates the wrong people, then those people will divert resources to flatten said someone's crib.

Except if you think the U.S. dropped two atom bombs over in Japan because they were barbarians and not because they wanted to end a war really quickly, really suddenly. Same logic applies here.

And also, hire some guards if you plan on building industry, or roll with a faction that can provide you with a certain market to sell and adequate protection against trolls, if you don't wanna bother with PvP and want to focus on building an industry, or as I see it, common sense.

A few things: to cool down atoms you have to make them slower, not keep them locked up tighter.
With locking them up tighter you heat them up more.
But then, you also have the problem that individual atoms dont have a defined temperature but only large groups of atoms have a temperature due to temp being a statistical measure.

Its also dependent on the linear movement of atoms, not on "oscillations because of their electrons".
Its electrons dont make an atom oscillate in free space.

But regardless, theres something else that we may can tap into for power: vacuum fluctuations.
With the right setup they have a measurable effect and even provide very small amounts of unusable work.
We have yet to figure out how to extract power (pseudo)continously.
We know how to build batteries using the same principle, though.

Also "lock down how to manipulate quarks", and how should that provide power?

"Star Wars Episove 7 : Attack of the Bogush Science" aside, there's not any possible chance of moving a moon with any kind of propulsion. And I don't mean that in game it won't be possible,  I mean in real life. Such a strainous application of force would have to be spread out in a ratio of 30 to 45% of one hemisphere of the moon's surface to do so and then, you got random things like tectonic plates shifting at the wrong angle, SHREDDING the moon apart. Sure, if you want to see the world burn go for it, if it's a moon and you break it you probably destroyed the planet below via raging thunderstorms and high tides.

so I was thinking about this in one of the organization discords today. What is everyone thoughts on colors in the game. Are we going to just have a color wheel where we can change the color of different elements to make buildings, ships, and other constructs the color we want. or are we going to have to actually go out and find dyes and such to make actual paint.

    thoughts?

friendlytyrant03 reacted to Woodsman in Am I alone in thinking that Stargate Probes are a bad idea?
I know I'm setting myself up for some vitriol here, but I just have to say that I hate the idea of SG Probes being the "preferred" method of interstellar exploration and travel.

Hear me out, because I love the idea of Stargate Probes in general, it's just that one little word that gets under my skin.

    Preferred.

Seems benign, I know, but it's actually a pretty significant word that we will come back to shortly.

To start with, let's look at what SG Probes are, because they're pretty dang cool.

A Stargate Probe is a freaking automated factory attached to a powerful FTL drive that travels through deep space before entering a distant star system and building a giant stargate that will (presumably?) connect back to the stargate that had previously been built in the home system. Some sort of mechanic wherein we build a Stargate somewhere, and then build a probe and launch it, and then wait for the first Stargate to turn on.

Which is really cool, no matter how you slice it. Especially when you add in the fact that they're probably going to make us LUA script the whole thing, all on our own. This will be an epic player achievement, make no mistake.

...now let's get back to that word, preferred. Especially in the context of a subscription-based sandbox MMO.

I have to say that I am disappointed to hear that the developers of a subscription-based sandbox have a "preferred" method of travel for players that includes months-long waiting periods. And, yes, the devs have stated that these probe might take months to reach their destination.

I know that it's a bit gauche to bring up something like this, but I've always had a fascination for elephants that are just sitting in the middle of the room, doing nothing in particular.

Let's say this game costs $11.99USD per month, for argument's sake. Let's say, also for argument's sake, that you took on the challenge of a crewed interstellar ship. You've done the calculations on fuel and energy, and spent some time building the appropriate ship. You know the journey will take months (2 months=$23.98USD, 4 months=$47.96USD, 8 months=$95.92USD!), but the devs said it was possible, so you had to try. You point your ship at the star you want, and......what?

Seriously though, what comes next? Do we just log off, pay our subscription for a few months, and hope we don't get the message that our characters have died and re-spawned back at the Arkship?

Why does interstellar travel have to take months? Is it punishment for not playing the way the devs want?

Every moment that I'm paying for a subscription to something, I'm asking myself why I'm paying for a subscription to something. And when it comes to subscription-based video games, that answer had better be "It's really fun and entertaining."

There is nothing fun and/or entertaining about traveling through deep space for months.

Also, what happens when one of these gates is destroyed? Everyone gets cut off from that star system for the next year of subscription time while new probes are constructed and sent? Talk about a divided player base.

If this game was a one-time purchase, I wouldn't feel this way about such a mechanic.

Not quite. There is difference between object class "CONSTRUCT" as big as a planet (certainly possible) and object class "PLANET" which should behave like CONSTRUCT (e.g. move).

So you will probably can (give enough time, manpower and resources) construct "artificial planet", which move like ship, but you can't "convert" already existing planet into ship. In other topic was stated than due to mechanic limitations, planets will be stationary (no orbiting and so on).

In the end, effect will be the same, so why bother ;p

    PS: To be perfectly clear:

Death Star from Star Wars IV, V, VI = possible

Starkiller Base from Star Wars VII = impossible
