DystopianSnowman reacted to GraXXoR in Question. How is damage translated from impact?
It does make a difference.... I build exceedingly long and thin ships that max out the entire length of a build cubes. I used to put the pilot seat at the front for good visibility (I didn't believe in 3rd person piloting) and a tiny bump would destroy the command seat and send me to the res node that sat at the back of the ship.
In the end I just gave up and put the pilot seat further back and flew 3rd person. much less hassle. now collisions just damage a few elements up front.
Voxels don't seem to absorb any damage, though... if anything, they add to the weight and make damage worse.

It is a really rather disappointingly childish and rudimentary system in place, currently (by currently, I mean for the last three years).

Personally I think if schematics had to be learnt as skills things would have been easier.
like personal cores, limit each player to a number of schematics per level and have another skill that allows the player to learn higher tier schematics.

Then finally create a physical interaction needed to keep the machines running (maintenance, fueling, or skill level tweaks that wear off as time goes by)

that would have helped, I suppose. By no means perfect, but still better than money making schematics making money cycle.

This is true yes. The worst part here though is that NQ actually put direct blame on solo and small group players for the fact markets did not function and sold the 0.23 changes as a "fix" for this.

NQ _wants_ big orgs to control and dictate the game parameters and expects solo and small group players to just follow that meta or become a big org if they want to create meta themselves. They pretty much killed their initial claims that the game will offer every opportunity for solo players to be successful. Clearly that success would not equal what a large org could do but NQ has changes the game to the point where small group and solo players are directly dependent on what large groups do or don't do.

Results are seen in for instance AGG being not available on markets at all or at ridiculous prices which directly follows from large orgs being able to cook their own and control the availability of these items for the rest.

I, too am not in ATV nor do I know anyone who is, so do not get advance warning regarding exploitable bugs coming down the line... I don't like the word exploits (tho I use it from time to time) because the word exploit is just shifting the blame for a bug onto to the end users.

Look at the latest major patch notes...

    fixed bug..
    fixed bug..
    fixed exploit on hover engines...
(No you didnt, you just fixed another bug that was exploitable)

semantics? sure but just like the word issue used instead of problem, it's designed to shift blame and obfuscate the truth.

aaanyway... where was I? Ah yes... schematics at 99% discount.

Them not winding back the schematics or alternatively not offering some schematics to everyone for a short period really made me feel sorry for the industrialists who never got in on the action.
Those industrialists are one of the cornerstones of DU civilization, and to treat them like that (more like outright ignore them) was really a kick in the teeth.

The thing that made this sting more is that schematics were already potentially the most contentious aspect of the game... and to allow some people to effectively all but completely ignore that incredible road-block that had just thrown in front of the industrialists to kneecap them was extremely harmful, and IMO exacerbated the exodus after 0.23...

DystopianSnowman reacted to GraXXoR in heres my game prediction after .24
I'm not super confident about this game's future... seems NQ have squandered too many opportunities and -as the saying goes- "snatched defeat from the jaws of victory" once too often for my liking.

Still, if one wants to feel a bit more positive, or at least hopeful for the future, one only needs to look at NMS for a real life example of (excusing the mixed metaphor) getting-your-shit-together and hitting it out of the park.

As a backer of Star Citizen, Elite Dangerous and a prepurchaser of NMS, though, I have seen all of those games be proclaimed "dead" "RIP" "THE END" "That's it, I'm done, and so should you be" by backers and players and I have seen quite a bit of turmoil and controversy these last 7-8 years: both disappointment and elation. Tellingly enough, though, all three games are doing fine right now and moving on to better places... NMS players are basically getting a free new game every 3-6 months. Elite is finally getting legs. Star Citizen is finally getting extra systems and is expanding constantly (both monetarily and in game, lol)...

Nobody is a honest-to-goodness soothsayer, since prophets don't and have never existed... nobody knows where this game will be in a year's time or if it will even still exist. But I really do hope they can turn this ship around, though. All I can say is that for the moment, I'm enjoying my game and building our small corner of civilisation.

@Kelevra142 Madis MP3 is getting fairly well built out. Two orgs are developing northeast and southwest and have linked their bases to the marketplace using dynamic cores to create roads.

our org currently has about 6-8 online most days, sometimes more, sometimes a little less.

the other org appears to be about twice our size.

there are a few independents who are also involved. They sell us parts and ore.

we have set aside building zones and other areas for other players to join in.

the whole area appears to be changing daily so I’d rate it as active.

it’s also nice that we usually see people popping it it when market who come and take a look at our org. We also have a surrogate destination at the top of our tallest tower that seems fairly popular judging by the number of randos that come through every day and buy our ships/building blueprints.

why don’t the two do you pop over here and take a look?

Friday is the quietest day of the week though so you might want to wait till the weekend.

see if you can find the tiny MP3 in this image.

I would like to be able to just export the list of elements and voxels in my blueprints to an excel file, JSON or CSV file. Currently, I have to read the blueprint window and manually input the shopping list to an external file. Not the model or anything fancy, just the actual shopping list.

Instead, if I could just click  ' Export blueprint' button at the bottom of the inspect blueprint window and it exported the CSV file of each elements name, its hitpoints, its mass in kg,  thrust in Newotons, etc...  that would be fantastic.

even simpler, if I could just right click on a blueprint in my inventory and "copy blueprint netlist to clipboard"
also please let us rename blueprints or at least show "date created"

Yeah, no. Please keep IRL superstitions out of game forums for a start.

telling people they are toxic literally straight after a profanity and then suggesting they need one specific member from of the pantheon of deities in their life is right up there in the periodic table next to irony.

I honestly don’t see why they can’t just compact players’ stuff after a few days if it’s on an aphelia tile, and allow them to redeploy it if they ever come back to the same tile.

Unless I’m missing something obvious, that seems like a watertight/non-abusable system.

That would help with MP clutter for a start.

90 days does seem the short end of reasonable for assets in private hexes.  Netflix Japan gives their customers 10 months before wiping ratings, favorites and comments etc.

maybe a nice, round year before cores go brown and rusty and territory markers evaporate…

Selecting a suitable time period is a difficult and nuanced problem for sure.  But at least market clutter could be handled easily if they were so inclined.

eh, it's not that simple though...not for any dev project.

You could give NQ another $30 million and it could still fail.

there's many reasons for this :
a larger dev team doesn't mean more output -- more money doesn't mean more development more money doesn't mean strong leadership or strong design more money doesn't erase the last six years of code more money doesn't mean leadership will listen to the talent they do hire Projects don't become easier as they get older, they get more difficult. Having more time or money doesn't ever guarantee success.

beyond the facts of development...it isn't our job to fundraise for NQ -- they are the ones that decided to launch a paid beta and wanted feedback from the players. Not our job to be concerned with player numbers, its our job to provide feedback.

Has this feedback turned into a major crap festival?

Sure, I'll admit that. But...that doesn't just happen because people are bored, it happens for good reasons...like having to discuss market clutter 300,000 times or wondering (still in 6+ months of paid beta) exactly how PvP is going to work.

With the way the game is right now so few people are playing the market is overflowing with goods with very few people buying. ore prices are falling with over supply because bots are gone.  Last but not least, people are so sick of mining they are leaving the game.     We have a community of coders and 3d modelers  why not take advantage of "Free" help making stuff for this game ??   I would be more than happy to make assets for new stuff.   Many players have expressed the same about other things in the game.

We need  another loop  ASAP  pick form a list.
Asteroids : should be easy enough as it was in Alpha  so the code "should" still exist NPC missions PVE ships that attack or are there to be hunted.     Quality of life stuff
XL atmo engines  L wings  Clean glass or maybe some Windex taken to the ones we have  Glass voxels  Markets accessible from 1 or 2 KM away  from the terminal  Or  cleanup system around them that removes all the junk.  feel free to add a few things here

someone shat in his cornflakes this morning.

    TLDR at the bottom.

YOU may think that pvp is the GOLDEN ticket but there are far more things that they could do (and IMO, should do)  first before introducing PVP considering this engine is really not up to the task.

removal of ALL BOTS:  ore purchasers and schematics.
Replace schematics with org research. research the schematics and horde or sell them.
PROPER Tech tree with proper tiers that need to be studied AND USED to unlock. (Cyberpunk's xp system is great).
Automated defensive structures, domes, forcefields, fortifications ala every single shooting since the 80.
Energy generation and consumption and recycling, reclaiming.
WATER as a resource needed for industry
importing water to arid planets like Madis/moons.
OIL wells for energy and plastics production.
realistic resource distribution and extraction rates,
    Proper resources and farming
Farming wood and other biological materials from trees and animals, not coal.
    Or grow them in reactors/vats.
Tier Zero materials for land buildings like concrete, masonry etc.
Proper terrain forming tools with undo like in core building.
Requiring energy/time cool downs for local res nodes to function forcing players who repeatedly die back to earlier res nodes, further away.

NOW we have valuable resources that need to be gathered and pooled, we have real reason for conflict and PVP.
Once this is in place, remove the safe zones and allow air / air-ground PVP.

Before any of this is in place, PVP is just grandstanding/ganking/willie waving and roleplaying. It has zero strategic value as currently implemented.

TL;DR: PVP isn't the golden ticket, it is the icing on the cake, IMO

DystopianSnowman reacted to blundertwink in Serious question. Did NQ give up on the community?
Automated? In what way is the forum automated?

Also...if she is leaving the company, she is likely finishing out the week, so could still have forum access.
0.23 was bizarre move motivated more by JC's arrogance and pride than a real game design or business rationale -- don't get me wrong, industry was getting a little crazy, but people were having fun.

Instantly flipping the off switch on all those factories is a textbook "bad idea" in game development.

Beyond the specifics of 0.23, I think it was symptomatic of NQ's lack of experience and their arrogant leadership that couldn't be bothered to understand the game from a player's perspective. The only perspective that ever mattered was JC and his weird "ready player one" roleplaying.

So I don't think NQ has "given up" on the community -- I think they never really cared to begin with. DU was always an expression of vanity and pride for its founder -- who was always going to do his own thing no matter how many voices in the community (or in his own damn company!) told him otherwise.

That won't ever change, 0.23 just made it more obvious.

If you think DU's issues are obvious to us, they're even more obvious to the devs doing the work and vast majority of NQ's staff...hence the high turnover, low morale, and glacial pace of dev.

Sometimes we got a little sentimental.

I wonder sometimes if we as a community, or just me, could have somehow done more, to show the money people, what an incredible game Landmark was.  If maybe we had done more they would have gotten it.  I dunno.

I wish everyone here would try to keep in mind, that this is a completely unproven idea.  The sure shot would have been to make a fortenite clone in space.  Maybe a zombie shooter battle royal ?

It's up to us to help prove that this is a good idea.  And picking it apart while it's half finished and shitting all over it, isn't helping.

I think the bad decisions that NQ makes, are due to a lack of faith in the project, by the marketing and money people.  Apparently their job is to sell the game to anyone and everyone as fast as possible, whether they like it or not.  And it's up to the devs to somehow catch up, if they can.

I guess the question is, do we want to help, or just throw shit from the sidelines and point out the obvious mistakes.
