Evening ladies and gentleman, first post here!

I have  been lurking the forums for a little while now and have been thinking rather the same thing. - that people are becoming  'bittervets' and the game isn't even in release yet..quite something when you think about it.  As a whole, I genuinely enjoy the sense of community here and don't notice the "toxicity" of posts except by a scant few people who seemingly have nothing better to do than snark attack at newcomers for being just that - newcomers.

To the people who are "sick and tired of the same questions", I say teach a man to fish, rather than giving him some fish.

To the people who are freshly coming in from their various corners to join the Dual Universe community, welcome.

I hope we forumwarriors can live up to the premise of the game itself, become a community to learn and grow and expand with - together.

Well here's how i see it.

The universe is chaotic, beautiful, random, balanced,  the only true neutral that can exist unbiased.  perfect.
Man will seek to replace beauty with structure. Man is driven by vanity and ego. Man will destroy perfection and replace it with corruption.

I will not fight for men, I will fight for the balance

Blackguard really isn't pirates, or smugglers, we may occasionally pirate or smuggle. These are  activities we may engage in on our path but they don't define us.

If you want to build a civilization a democracy works well.  If you want to lead an Armada of blood thirsty raiders, hierarchical dictatorships work best.

A group of blood thirsty raiders is more akin to an army than a state. Unlike most armies Blackguard soldiers can quit at any time with no repercussions

Sorry mammoth, everyone is just on edge right now because we've been having a fight over most of these topics for over a month.

I accept your desire that you think urging the game into a direction that you want is the right path, but its just one path of many.

the technology behind Dual Universe has been in the works from JC Baillie and his supporters for a long time. They aren't going to switch their minds from a Massive game to single shards or split instances.
Most people here as you have seen are fanatical for a true MMO game finally. I'm very excited myself for it.

This concern that bad things will happen to people and that's why you want to protect yourself from the world. There are some mechanics in place for that.

1.) Finding other players or organisations for safety. There are at least 4 umbrella organisations, a few of them offer mutual protection.
2.) Arkified areas will be player created high security zones, the full workings of how safe and how permanent are a little gray. but they'll exist.

Welcome to dual universe, it was an interesting first day for you. As suggested please look around, the Player made FAQ has good quick answers to many questions.
    See you around

The problem with you logic here is, Servers do cost money to run, so if you don't want to pay a monthly fee to play a game, I suggest you stick to the ones that don't have this set-up.  MMO's on the other hand HAVE this set up, and you can expect to pay a monthly fee to keep their server going.  All of these BS arguments about not wanting to pay can be boiled down to that simple idea.  I am glad they plan to charge monthly, and will have no problem paying them.

So as I read through the forums I find the state of it all depressing. Toxic fumes are starting to engulf the whole of the forums and no one seems to care.

Instead of helping one another we belittle and degrade. So many post about the exact same subject from pure laziness. Instead of healthy debates we argue, fight, and bicker.

We need to resolve these issues before it is too late. some of this is our fault and some the lack of moderation we have. No i am not attacking NQ-Nyzaltar only saying he/she is but one person and we the community should not rely on him/her.

We should stop all the multiple post by pointing the OP to the original post about the subject and leave it at that. Maybe have the duplicate post removed? (pokes Nyzaltar) Ignore the trolls and put a stop to their fun. if you make it not fun for them they will stop.

Personally I want the community to flourish and be one of the best, but how the forums are going I have stopped posting for these reasons and I am not going to continue to waste my time repeating myself on the same fights over and over again with the same counter arguments over and over again.

    Hi !

    Welcome around.

You mentioned some interesting points, however I beg to differ on most of them.

It would be COOL, but absolutely pointless regarding gameplay mechanics, and add over-complexity for the devs to implement this purely cosmetic feature.

    COOL, not NEED.

On this one I do think this what will happen.
This is a Game Designer task to think of an incentive for the player to add richness to their ship.

    And ... Blueprints happened.

Since you can make a design and store it for replication upon destruction of the first prototype (or else).
The PvPers will, too, make some efforts into building their ships; because nobody likes flying in a piece of junk and will now their effort is not truly lost after a fight (so as yours).

As in any MMO, and especially in a sandbox PvP-oriented one, this is to be expected, as it should.
Knowing this, you can always monitor and prevent your child to access the game if you think this will be a prejudice for him to experience this.

If you want your son to play a casual space MMO where nothing of the sort will happens, please introduce him to "No Man's Sky", as I think it is more oriented toward the "innocent" gamer (it is not even truly multiplayer, so no pvp)

If your son want to enjoy ship building, please try the plethora of titles that already offer it today. (SE, etc...)

To my opinion, none of them are satisfying, and Dual Universe represent hope of a true sandbox game, which is a rare commodity these days. So rare in fact, that most of the current generation of MMO player doesn't even know what it truly means.

    For me, it means freedom.

Freedom NOT to destroy your ship if I decide to have pity or simply does not care !
    or...
Freedom to destroy your son's ship just because I can. (size do matters ^^)
If I feel I can, it is because I am prepared for this fight.
In the process, your son may just learn that, to be prepared.
He may take the challenge and think of a better design for his ship, and (much) later love to PvP and not living in fear, because too, he will think he is prepared.

Freedom to NOT love PvP and be prepared to defend your "life" at a high cost !

All of this is not griefing. This is Freedom.
this freedom will ensure countless encounters, none of them the same, this freedom will make sure Dual Universe will not bore you after a few hours.

PvP is just an example, but the same logic applies to other aspect of the game.

Also, you will be free to reject civilization and be on your way to the edge of the (infinite procedural) universe .. never to cross path with another human again ... That can be a challenging goal actually.

    Smaller server means more rules required by the close proximity. More rules means less freedom and less emergent gameplay;
In short: a game able to die quicker, and a large amount of player deterred.

If I want a small community, I can find myself a nice server of .. SE, or Rust, or even WoW.

This is just not what DU is aiming for.

In DU, you will have freedom to make friends with other player wanting the same as you.
You will be able to team up and play together or just be neighbors  ! You can define your own "high standard" and go evangelize it into the verse (or not, again, you are free).

Build or join a community like-minded and just play together. You will find that the journey will bring you to places and situation you could have not even thought of before. You will be able to count on other players to "defend" your 300 hours masterpiece, or to hunt down whoever tried to smash it.

I would agree with you for a solo game.

Again, DU will be a true Massive Multiplayer Online game
It will run on cloud servers. Be it Amazon S3 or Google Cloud, this cost money. A LOT OF money.

So, a "maintenance fee" is required.
It is only normal as a player, and user connected to those servers, to participate to the cost.
NovaQuark must pay employees to keep improving the game, and to pay server bills. Lets not forget rewarding investors who made the whole journey possible.

So no, sorry, this is not robbery at all from my point of view.

No Man's Sky DO APPEARS to be robing their customers from my point of view... $70 for a procedural, soloplayer, tamagotchi simulator...err .. why not .. but .. well ... they do have servers to maintain the live database but ... the game is not even multiplayer.... (I have just seen a 2h long leaked gameplay video)

Back to the fee: in DU, you will be able to pay using PLEX-like item, using in game currency. So, even with razor blade in your pockets, you will be able to enjoy the game ^^.

Optional buying of expansion do divide communities. =/= freedom of a sandbox
It might be the best model for another game, but for DU, this makes no sense.

Just as people play games not intended for them and go and bitch to the evil dev who made it because it is too hard for their non-experimented taste.

    Conclusion

Lets agree to disagree on almost every point

I sincerely hope you will be able to enjoy DU if it comes out as promised, you might just surprise yourself having the blast of a gamer-lifetime.

My motivation was just to have a friendly chat and show and tell about what we like, so many styles of sci-fi, and who knows someone may see something they never saw before and get inspired. No wrong answers just a matter of taste. for the purpose of this discussion lets assume that the shape/design of a ship wont have any effect on game play

I don't think that's the case eve has shown that people will work insanely hard and then take the fruits of their labor and throw it at a problem knowing it might get destroyed

in any event, if one had the time to create such weapons in game, they could just as easily wipe everything off the surface of the planet down to the un-diggable zone anyway and the result for the players would be the same, just in a much less awe inspiring way .

Rather mundane topic but I think this would be quite interesting to see play out in game. Will corporations run public stargate networks? Will they charge tolls? What about in-system travel? Will people run the interplanetary bus service?

Seems like a mundane subject that is usually done by an NPC, but with DU who will do it? Will we have Player John as the local bus driver, or will we have mega corporations running fleets of custom AI controlled interplanetary transports?

I personally see all of the above happening but I'd like to hear other's thoughts in this.

Going over the list of games I have played in the past, things I have liked and things I have seriously disliked. I very much enjoy the option to customize my character in as many ways as possible without getting absolutely ridiculous (horns and flame eyes, ect, ect...). There were two games I very much enjoyed the character creator much more than I did the actual game itself (especially as both games went through merciless nerfing sessions): City of Heroes and Champions Online.

I know this isn't that kind of game, but where I am getting at is this: give us options during the process we go through when we design our characters. They are a digital representation of our individuality we use to interact with the world in which we are provided. Please don't have a generic male and generic female avatar that are soulless and devoid of creativity. Let us explore the options a bit:

-Cybernetic implants (we are in space for crying out loud, why not let us have robo-arms, hands, feet, legs, hips, eyes, ect...)

-Flight gear, or not... (Just because we are in space doesn't mean that we all want to be clad in a one-piece, single color jumpsuit that is identical to every other pilot. Conversely, it doesn't mean that the female characters should be granted the ability to wear boy-baiting bikini armor that wouldn't protect from a flung toothpick OR that the male characters should be encouraged to create super-muscled, skintight spandex clad cavemen with only a loincloth to shield our eyes from their...manliness... *pukes*)

-Accessory display items (what if my pilot needs a backpack, cane, satchel, purse, clutch, badass sunglasses, earrings, facial and body tattoos, warpaint, ect, ect... Get creative!)

-I hate to admit it, but not everyone is a damn Olympian... It would be nice to have the option to have a mediocre-looking pilot. Or maybe a face/body system similar in function to skyrim or fallout. Simple sliders to adjust the face, body, ect.)

I love to pan the camera around a cool-looking character. I implore you, please give us options!

In addition, it would be nice to be able to find or craft items that give helpful bonuses to certain characteristics. Some of these could include: Amount of resource gathered from a single cycle, damage output/resistance, ship speed/agility/durability, walking/running speed, jump height/distance and many more.

The ship is another often-overlooked aesthetic. Custom paint jobs, or skins could be submitted, reviewed and approved by appointed moderators from within the community to filter profane or otherwise objectionable paint schemes (don't give me that, you know damn-well what I'm talking about you pervs

    Just some thoughts.

Thank you for reading and considering my rant.
