First I pick a role for what I want to design, then I look at concept art from the game to see if there is any useful information to be gleaned. Then I decide on what class (size) of ship that would be fun to think about fulfilling chosen role. Bust out the pencil and paper, pick aesthetic for hull, draw, at least two angles very rough interior overlay showing potentially where you want things to go. Speculate about the thrust capacity of titan-class engine elements. Add in cool features, while hoping that the elements required will be actual things in game. Refresh the Dual Universe youtube page, twitter, and devblog, and forums out of hope. Speculate some more. Wildy speculate otherwise known as day dream. Come back to reality. Use the blank space on the paper to define how you want your, mighty starship/meek unassuming freighter/mech battle suit/magical unicorn merry go round, to move and why, add appropriate elements.  Then huzzah! It's a thing potentially capable of coming to life(ish) in DU. But I am sure there is more I could do...

Real life pencil and paper, I have tried blender and sketchup but I get more done on paper.

    Purpose: Cinderfall's Directive

Simply put, Cinderfall exists to maximize its members’ ability to enjoy Dual Universe.

The Cinderfall Syndicate is an organization established to provide an international identity and means of cooperation between both individuals and organizations. It is not a typical corporation, nation, or alliance. Rather, the Syndicate is the manifestation of a mutually beneficial agreement between people and organisations that certain basic laws need to exist in order for all of our members to enjoy life in the universe, as they did in the Golden Age of Earth.

Perhaps parallels can be drawn between Cinderfall and the United Nations, but we extend far beyond the scope of a simple coalition. Cinderfall vows to rebuild civilization not through the eyes of a corrupt bureaucracy, but in the way humanity as a whole would have intended: to a universe of balance and harmony.

Feel like you were destined to lead humanity back to the Golden Age?

    Welcome to Cinderfall.

While the rifter is one of the only Minmitar ships I can stand to look at, so I may try to build it, but I would definitely go with my trusty Harbinger first.  I would have said Legion, but the modularity and the strange way the outer hull plates are attached might require a little thought, so best save that.

I feel that people could be turned off for space games or now actually want an epic one. But your right it is very annoying seeing the DU news being compared to NMS, but maybe by official release the anger will be at least abated somewhat.

If other voxel games have taught me anything its the order of ship likeness goes:

    1. Star destroy
    2. Enterprise
    3. Whatever the BSG thingy is called
    4. Then eve ships

so its inevitable, i have no artistic talent myself, if i did I'd make me a nyx* as my first order of business

Examples of Elements are: propulsion engines, control units (computers), doors, weapons, batteries, containers, accelerometers, radars, targeters, drone bay, elevator, and many more. The way the construct orchestrates all these Elements is through scripts, and what we call "Distributed Processing Units". Let's dive into it, and see what it can do.

TBH I am a bit worried after the Planet Nomad kickstarter having so few backers, and people might currently be a little bit turned off from space games because of the No Man's Sky backlash (IGN constantly comparing the two certainly doesn't help). I will make my pledge, but I hope they have a plan B, or at least an early access strategy as a low bar minimum goal in case they wont get enough for the full development cycle.

    RED HAT SYSTEMS
This topic, sponsored by Red Hat Systems, aims to inform players about the LUA scripting side of the game and clarify the facts.

    KNOWN ELEMENTS
Propulsion Engines, Fuel Tanks, Cockpit, Navigation Instruments, Doors, Weapons, Batteries, Containers, Accelerometers, Radars, Targeters, Drone Bay, Elevator, Inclinometer (Gyroscope), and last but not least…

CONTROLS UNITS / DISTRIBUTED PROCESSING UNITS
Control Units – A control unit is the computer hardware, whereas the DPU (Distributed Processing Unit) is the computer's software. In fact, every element in the game will have a built-in DPU. The difference between control units and other elements is that the control units exist specifically to run player-customized DPU's, whilst the DPU's embedded in other elements are not customizable.

DPU's will be distributed (sold, copied, transferred, etc) in black boxes. Think of the black box as a USB Memory Stick. Only a single black box can be inserted into a control unit at any one time, however a construct (ship, car, boat, factory, etc) can have many control units and therefore many black boxes. The black box is therefore simply a transport mechanism for the DPU. More on black boxes later.

Each DPU will be capable of emitting events (standard pre-defined events written by the devs and also player-defined events written in LUA) and exposing executable functions (again, predefined + custom). The DPU will also have a collection of event handlers (again, predefined + custom: you get the idea). An event handler simply listens out for events, and then executes a function if a player-defined expression evaluates as true.

Each DPU has multiple slots where other elements can be plugged into (Think of USB Ports).

    KNOWN EVENTS (EXAMPLES)
    self.radar1.enemyAt(x,y,z)

    KNOWN FUNCTIONS (EXAMPLES)
    self.inclinometer2.getRoll()
    self.Inclinometer4.getPitch()
    self.engine1.setPower(100)
    self.weapon7.fire()

In the example events and functions above, “self” is simply a Lua keyword that implies the code is referring to its own scope. “radar1”, “weapon7”, etc are the names of the slot that is emitting the event or is being targeted to execute a function. “getRoll()” is an example of a function being invoked (safe to assume it will return a numeric value with roll angle).

    SYSTEM DPU
The system DPU is rather special. It handles user input (emit event when a key is pressed) and also controls the flow of procedural code (as opposed to event driven) via the use of timers. I.E you could call system.setTimer(0.1) and provide a function that will be invoked every 100 milliseconds. Another awesome feature of the system API – Customizable GUI! That's right, via calls to system you can customize the games GUI.

    BLACK BOX/COMPONENT DPU
A Component DPU is an element that you, as a programmer, will be selling to other players. It will abstract the functionality of your custom DPU into what can be seen as a compiled library. The end user will be able to consume your functions and events without seeing the underlying code. If the end-user is another programmer then they can use your Component DPU as a module to write their own Component DPU which requires your Component DPU in order to work. If the end-user is not a developer they can either drag and drop the required functionality via a simple UI, or they can make use of an auto-configure system (Think Plug and Play).

    SUMMARY
What the devs have done here is give us access to the very tools they themselves use to build the game. When you use a Propulsion Engine, its functionality was written by the devs in the same way a player might customize a DPU. The Propulsion Engine has its own pre-defined fully functional DPU inside it. By introducing the concept of Control Units we as players can fully mod the game, from within the game. If we don't like the way the Propulsion Engine handles, that's fine, we can just overide the behaviour with our own code. The same for almost every element in the game. The devs has basicly created an in-game IoT (Internet-of-Things). This system literally redefines Emergent Gameplay, in fact it laughs in the face of Emergent Gameplay. Nothing else comes close.

I mean, it's a simple idea but it could have it's uses.... until you think of one thing. While we are using this, there is still the problem that people will use external chat for faster communication. I mean, it wouldn't make sense for chat since there would also be alternatives.

However, for things such as sending maybe a camera feed, radar detections, or similar, it might be feasible.

    1. Scanning an area with an automated drone would also store data. Now, let's say you need to send that data a distance. Depending on the distance, it may be possible you need something stronger to transmit the signal, or something to relay that signal.

    However, my second point against.

    2. Latency as you put it in here, would also take more to calculate. In essence, making the game calculate the signals and the time it takes to get to destinations is unreasonable. If a signal is traveling, and it has multiple receivers, calculating the delay for each one wouldn't be reasonable for the server, and it would just be a waste of time for those waiting for said signals.

I am split on this, while I would like a planet to slowly regain its appearance to avoid an entire planet looking like this:

But then again I would prefer us being forced to slowly expand and move outwards into the universe as we expend the resources we have at our immediate disposal. I envision creating huge interstellar long range construction ship being constructed and either sent on its way on its own or carrying brave souls prepared to spend weeks or even months on said ship:

With the resources to construct a stargate at its destination as well as a new outpost to coordinate the exploitation of its new home.

If resources would regenerate, after a time you would not need to expand further and you risk stagnation.

Its all good, you want free to play? Ok Im out, no money from me. I've been waiting for years for a game worth playing that embraces a return to the subscription.

If all the free to play games out there were so great why arent we off playing them right now? Why dont you have any memorable friends or have any love for playing those games? Why did you in the end abandon them and go banging the war dums asking for more free stuff somewhere else?

Is it possible those developers dont listen to their community, they dont develop actual game content, the people youre playing with have no money and no integrity. Not only are the spineless creeps but they lack coordination to push buttons on their keyboards and cant complete basic dungeons as a group. Well thats ok, they devs will just let you all swipe that credit card to get over the difficult stuff.

No wait everyone. I think instead of using the single shard technology that JC and Devs developed over the past few years isnt what we should do at ALL!
Lets make it like second life, well make private people run their own servers. The cost to licence the software from NQ will be set at $10,000 dollars a year.
Now youll also need a cloud capable server from a major provider, that wont be cheap looks like it costs about $1,200 dollars a month for a basic setup.
$24,400 a year to run your own private piece of the single shard dual universe game! HELL YEA FREE TO PLAY!

Now maybe you didnt want to setup your own slice of life and will just bum off of NQ's free space and make them handle all your character data.

So now you can log into the game, yep didnt have to buy a boxed copy! SO FREE!
Next up, if you want to wear anything other than the basic starter clothes. its 15$ for a shirt, 15$ for pants, 10$ for shoes, 5$ for hats, gloves, and other accessories.
so about 60-70$ to deck your character out with clothing.
You can make a second character, but to unlock a second character slot that will be 25$ per

All right, by golly, you got into the game, and you aren't totally naked anymore. I mean, you weren't forced to pay but you did anyway. so you spent 60$ in the cash shop in month one. but you arent done yet.
To leave Alioth youll have to pay $35 to instantly learn rocketry$ or You can pay 15$ to unlock a tech tree that trains over time but that will take 5 months to train, sorry the learning speed is reduced for players that dont pay a subscription.

So you think. hmm do i want to pay 35$ or wait 5 months and get griefed on Alioth and quit the game?
    So you pay 35$
Month 1 expenditure. 95$, but its ok, its ok, nobody FORCED you to pay this.

I could go on like this forever, but do you all get the point yet?

A market tab for LUA sounds amazing and the best case scenario, and I don't know why it couldn't be done. And they might as well include the functionality because I would say that this will probably happen even if it's not tied to the in-game market. I could see a posting on a job board asking for someone from a specific organization to come and optimize(?) their scripting(??), or access the DPU for that ship and paste-in (I guess?) the correct scripts for construct. Or if it came to it, posting pay us 42 million moneys, and we will fix how your ships fly. Sorry for my basic at best vocabulary on this.

You DO understand the game is not built around different servers and it's a single-shard continuous world right? You mentioned Counter-Strike.

Tell me, while playing Counter-Strike, did you experience ever as you played on one map, being able to walk into another map, while playing the game, without going through a menu?

    Of course you never did.

Ergo, you are asking for the devs, to split their community on the main game, which defeats the point of the game to begin with. WoW, Lineage 2, they have server capacities because they are off-the-shelves server tech. JC Baillie built a server tech that enables many people to exist in the same world without fragmenting it into defferent servers. So, what you ask, is the devs to fragment their servers, AGAIN, defeating the purpose of the game and its selling point, the tech behind the game.

You want Space Second Life? It's simple, stay away from PvP areas, be an industrialist, buy PLEX, do whatever is you want to do. Don't ask for the devs to give you a way to rob them.

Counter-Strike makes money out of gambling, cause that's how it makes money with its loot box idea, different servers or not, they all buy loot boxes for real money from the cash shop. If it's not loot-boxes it's directly Pay-2-Win in an MMO game, which in the case of an MMO is CANCER, utilised by companies who make WoW clones.

I just have encyclopedic knowledge of things. You, apparently, not so much.

"Can I haz your techs to mak3 mon3y of ppls donations? l0lz" That's what your post is. And given how the game is beign made, NO, no you can't.

CosmicDragon reacted to Anaximander in Core Units
For any construct a player will build, it will require a Core Unit as the first block. This Element contains all the information about the ownership and admin rights (who owns the construct, who can use it, who can edit it, etc). The size of the Core Unit defines the size of the Building Zone around it, and the type of the Core Unit can define which kind of const...ruct you can build with. Dynamic Core Units are for the mobile constructs such as spaceships or hovercrafts. Static Core Units are made for building houses, outposts, or even skycrapers in a city! The models shown below are the smallest sizes: they respectively have a side size of 1, 2, 4 or 16 voxels (equivalent to 25cm, 50cm, 1m or 4m).
