Kuritho reacted to SonEasterZombie in Universal standards, and how to encourage them.
In real life, universal standards exist to make it easier for designers to create a product that is compatible with other products. We have USB because if every single computer company had a different connector, the consumer would have to consider a LOT more when deciding which computer to buy into because they would be buying into an entire ecosystem, unless they wanted to screw around with dongles. We have standardized aspect ratios for computer screens, so that the media we create fits properly (or vice-versa, not sure which came first on that).

In order for multiple organizations to work together seamlessly, or for ships to be compatible with a nations regulations (example: requiring all ships to be outfitted with trackers that give a police force information about if they are being attacked or hostile) there need to be some Universal standards in place.

A few things that I think should be standardized once possible:

    1) Ship sizes. A ship that displaces a certain volume corresponds with a size class. Having standardized size classes would make comparing ships between manufacturers an easier task.

    2) "Module" sizes. Ships could be outfitted with module bays. These could be weapon slots, cargo holds, thruster packs, etc. Standardizing these would make it easier for designers to create "aftermarket" parts

    3) docking ports/connectors: Just like a USB port or a gas cap, these things have standard sizes and shapes to make it easier for things to link up. Now while any connector will almost certainly be a mesh-construct made by the devs, there should probably be a clearance standard so that ships can safely dock together and perhaps even gas stations could come about.

Let me know what you guys think, and if Universal Standards will ever happen in DU or not.

Hi all, really excited to get involved with everything DU. Been browsing YouTube, these forums, and the DU discord for awhile now and figured it was time to finally join in the community. I've really enjoyed seeing how passionate everyone is with the game even though it's still a fair way from completion, gives me hope that the final months to release will see a huge passionate player-base.

    Best,
    Amorianys

P.S. If anyone is interested in a unique style of government in DU check out my new org "United Sectors of Providence".  Freedom > Dictatorship

And don't let yourself be told off from your idea.
Some people just don't understand Space in itself ... as long as you have protection at the location you want to unload and load your cargo, everything will be fine.

And booians, as far as i am concerned, aren't rocket scientists ...
It's incredible hard to catch a target in space~ Just be prepared to defend yourself and your cargo when you're close to planets/ orbital stations. And even then ... you probably have 3~10 trys to learn it. As people will need to learn how to attack someone who's standing still, without shooting past them as a comet and burning up in atmosphere.

AS in fact, you probably should be stationed close to that Atmosphere to Space Orbit for dropping off cargo into waiting hands of your costumers.

    Good luck and god speed.
PS: Space is an deadly void ... but the best friend of a merchant.

Sorry I`m fairly new to the dual universe board, not new to the project, because I`m lurking around for a long time now before deciding to pledge and back up as patron, but I`m really shocked that people already complaining in an early PRE-ALPHA phase game development about being or feeling bothered by others behavings in an OPEN WORLD based game, futher more already requesting a "leave me alone mode" in such state of game development. Pretty sad to see, people like that kind spend money to be first and try to play private. I hope the developers don`t jump onto such a requests band wagon in the fist place. Better refund the thread starter and offer that person a gentle and nice meant way to the exit door. Hopefully my thoughts are no insult to the threat starter, because they were never meant or typed as trolling, just saying something like that request has no right of exsitance here in a community driven and supported game developement. We all (hopefully) want the the same, that Dual Universe becomes the World we all love to spend time within in the future.

See you all somtimes in the Dual Universe.

I'm extremely certain a republic is a very un-unique style of government. America is a republic (shut up naysayers), and it is one of the biggest countries in the world.
Also, no. Republics cannot function within a game like this because it promotes elitism and favoritism among a group of people.

    Tortuga & Tales from Tortuga
Tortuga City is a community city building project in the world of DUAL UNIVERSE. The city is a place for trade, manufacturing and shady business. You'll never find a more wretched hive of scum, villainy and dashing rogues. Separated from the shackles of organization affiliations and political agendas, the cyberpunk world of Tortuga with its skyscrapers and neon signs will be home to adventurers and agents, artists and militarists, traders and thiefs.

Tales from Tortuga is a series of fictionalized stories set in this world, created for the entertainment of the colonists of Alioth and abroad. Our adventure doesn't take place in the actual Tortuga of the game, it only takes inspirations from it. The stories you will read are not part of the official lore of DUAL UNIVERSE, it's a story within a story.

Tales from Tortuga will be released in episodes every two weeks on SpaceshipDrama.com and here in the forum. The episodes are written by different authors from the community and comprise of stand-alone stories that will tell a 12 issue long overarching plot. The cover art of the issues is also created by different artists.

You can get in contact with the writers and artists on the Tortuga City Discord.

Kuritho reacted to Lethys in Why it is a good idea to pay subscription fee for Dual Universe
Because necroposting is against the Forum rules. I just hinted at that, nothing more. If you break some rules, get a reminder of them and then run around screaming "these forums are hostile. The Community is fascist" and write passive aggressive stuff like "I do not need a community to be like you, to follow your norms, to be socially acceptable. That does not mean that I am trouble in the forum but that I have freedoms to differ" or "Star Citizen and other games, where there is a hostile 30´s, 40´s male community on the forum, who pay a lot of money to get back to some childhood ideal of gaming with friends, and who attack violently all others on the forum " then I can't help but laugh.
Do whatever you want, but acting like that won't get you very far in a MMO like Du

Kuritho reacted to Lethys in Stealth, Fog of War, ability to hide Territory hex claim.
The focus isn't on you - If you don't claim a tile then noone will instantly know you're there. But ppl like me will try to find ppl in their hideouts. Yes there are thousands of players and in that alone is a huge advantage. Ppl will have a hard time finding YOU anyway. But you can't hide forever and shouldn't bei allowed to do so. Only when you take extreme measures like flying far away, Not building big things, Not claiming territories and other stuff.

Claimed territory needs to be marked somehow though. Imagine entering orbit and doing a quick long range scan. Then you just knowe that 6 of 55894 tiles are taken. Nothing more. Then you have to fly there to get a better scan which allows you (because of skills, modules and such) to determine which org or player claimed that tile.

Who knows If there will be scanners for players? But structures like TCUs, bases and ships can be detected via radar. It would bei much more fun and better gameplay If they did some countermeasures to that. Build your base out of antiradarium to block radar. Then the guy needs to do a thermal scan. If you have a major mining base there which needs alot of heat to run (furnaces) then you'll emit thermal energy which can be detected. If you build so deep that even that is blocked then you still need electricity which could emit EM-waves which could bei detected via some other scanner.

All those scanners and countermeasures would need special skills and special modules, need energy and fuel to balance them. Such a system would be way more fun to have because it doesn't make you inherently stealthy or inherently good at detecting others but it would need critical thinking, good planning and actual work to stay hidden or detect others.

Yeah, that's pretty bad gameplay mechanics right there. If they would do such a thing, everyone (including big Bad orgs) would abuse that system to just stay hidden. Only available to small orgs? Just split that huge org into smaller pieces via rdms and take full advantage of that stealth system. Just available to players without orgs? Why give them a huge advantage in a Dog eat dog world?

What they COULD do is a fine tuning with scanning mechanics. Like thermal scans or radar waves. Hide your Base well with a special voxel made out of antithermium. Then ppl would need to use other means to scan for your base. Or craft your ship out of antiradarium and ppl won't bei able to detect you via radar. Whatever the mechanic - you have to balance it. There should not be a 100% safe solution which would take others years to find you. Days? Maybe. 100%? No.

    Did you know:
Almost nobody is going to use transportation systems.
That's like playing Call of Booty with a knife.

Also, logistics. How are you going to transfer this much stuff without, y'know, losing everything.
You are a giant target begging to be shot up by somebody from BOO or something.
Here's a few quick scenarios that could probably happen.
Situation 1: Nobody buys your services.
["Hey, it's... pretty lonely," xxx_DRAGONSLAYER_xxx softly whispers."]
Situation 2: You run out of fuel.
["Hey, uh... we got a major problem." xxx_DRAGONSLAYER_xxx yells over the Discord comms with a thousand other people.
    "What?" The captain, Lettuce420 says.
"WE GOT A MAJOR PROBLEM." He screams with a thousand other people talking about mundane subjects, as your ship slowly veers into the gravity of a small moon.]
    Situation 3: You get raided.
[You hear several large thunks, as a group of BOOians entire the doorway and steal all your loot. They don't even... like... pillage as your security team starts ejecting. They talk something about "making the biggest sculpture in the universe" and "poor fools forgot the have weapons." They decide to take your reactor and they warp away, leaving you with a few bread crumbs.]

As you can see, this happens to any large service. A fleet of smaller ships is much better as it prevents... almost every single one of these problems from happening.
