    GalloInfligo reacted to xNeroX in Distributed Processing Units - Control Units
    RED HAT SYSTEMS
    This topic, sponsored by Red Hat Systems, aims to inform players about the LUA scripting side of the game and clarify the facts.

    KNOWN ELEMENTS
    Propulsion Engines, Fuel Tanks, Cockpit, Navigation Instruments, Doors, Weapons, Batteries, Containers, Accelerometers, Radars, Targeters, Drone Bay, Elevator, Inclinometer (Gyroscope), and last but not least…

    CONTROLS UNITS / DISTRIBUTED PROCESSING UNITS
    Control Units – A control unit is the computer hardware, whereas the DPU (Distributed Processing Unit) is the computer's software. In fact, every element in the game will have a built-in DPU. The difference between control units and other elements is that the control units exist specifically to run player-customized DPU's, whilst the DPU's embedded in other elements are not customizable.

    DPU's will be distributed (sold, copied, transferred, etc) in black boxes. Think of the black box as a USB Memory Stick. Only a single black box can be inserted into a control unit at any one time, however a construct (ship, car, boat, factory, etc) can have many control units and therefore many black boxes. The black box is therefore simply a transport mechanism for the DPU. More on black boxes later.

    Each DPU will be capable of emitting events (standard pre-defined events written by the devs and also player-defined events written in LUA) and exposing executable functions (again, predefined + custom). The DPU will also have a collection of event handlers (again, predefined + custom: you get the idea). An event handler simply listens out for events, and then executes a function if a player-defined expression evaluates as true.

    Each DPU has multiple slots where other elements can be plugged into (Think of USB Ports).

    KNOWN EVENTS (EXAMPLES)
    self.radar1.enemyAt(x,y,z)

    KNOWN FUNCTIONS (EXAMPLES)
    self.inclinometer2.getRoll()
    self.Inclinometer4.getPitch()
    self.engine1.setPower(100)
    self.weapon7.fire()

    In the example events and functions above, “self” is simply a Lua keyword that implies the code is referring to its own scope. “radar1”, “weapon7”, etc are the names of the slot that is emitting the event or is being targeted to execute a function. “getRoll()” is an example of a function being invoked (safe to assume it will return a numeric value with roll angle).

    SYSTEM DPU
    The system DPU is rather special. It handles user input (emit event when a key is pressed) and also controls the flow of procedural code (as opposed to event driven) via the use of timers. I.E you could call system.setTimer(0.1) and provide a function that will be invoked every 100 milliseconds. Another awesome feature of the system API – Customizable GUI! That's right, via calls to system you can customize the games GUI.

    BLACK BOX/COMPONENT DPU
    A Component DPU is an element that you, as a programmer, will be selling to other players. It will abstract the functionality of your custom DPU into what can be seen as a compiled library. The end user will be able to consume your functions and events without seeing the underlying code. If the end-user is another programmer then they can use your Component DPU as a module to write their own Component DPU which requires your Component DPU in order to work. If the end-user is not a developer they can either drag and drop the required functionality via a simple UI, or they can make use of an auto-configure system (Think Plug and Play).

    SUMMARY
    What the devs have done here is give us access to the very tools they themselves use to build the game. When you use a Propulsion Engine, its functionality was written by the devs in the same way a player might customize a DPU. The Propulsion Engine has its own pre-defined fully functional DPU inside it. By introducing the concept of Control Units we as players can fully mod the game, from within the game. If we don't like the way the Propulsion Engine handles, that's fine, we can just overide the behaviour with our own code. The same for almost every element in the game. The devs has basicly created an in-game IoT (Internet-of-Things). This system literally redefines Emergent Gameplay, in fact it laughs in the face of Emergent Gameplay. Nothing else comes close.

    Possibly, although if they did i believe we would be better off merging in some way. I'm not here to lead, nor to create the next mega-corporation. Simply to focus talent, and hopefully make a living in the game.

    Anyway, linux is linux - everybody has there preferred flavour. I chose Red Hat more for the name and the logo and there is definitely a commercial side to this organization I think Red Hat suits it well.

    GalloInfligo reacted to EarlWentworth in The Glorious Earldom of Mercia (Not Murica or Demacia.)
    Greetings, Welcome to the Introduction page for the Earldom of Mercia, That's Mercia not Murica or Demacia! On this page I'll explain to you what the Earldom is about, what we do, our backstory and if your interested why you should join us.

    Firstly the Earldom is ruled by the Earl Trevor of house Wentworth one of the many houses that will exist within the Earldom it self. (Up above is the Wentworth coat of arms.)

    Yes i know, all you democracy loving fellows out there may be frothing at the mouth about an Earldom since it is part of a Feudal Hierarchy but do not fear, we provide great treatment for our peasants and we do vote on all matters that affect them, and no the Earl does not have absolute authority, he cares for his peasants immensely, he empty's his Wine and Ale stores constantly for them.
    But the Bottom line is that the Earldom is a Constitutional Monarchy of sorts but there is No King yet.

    "Why Is there not a King M'lord Trevor?" Ask's Sir Barry, Well to tell you the truth Barry we're waiting for more Earldom's to pop up first then the ruling house of each Earldom will get together and have a chat about who should be King.

    "I don't want to be a Peasant when i join, i want to be some thing else!" Says User #190237, Well it's simple really, you can either join as a Man-at-Arms in the military or If you have a family coat of arms and can prove that your a Noble you'll be bumped up to the Rank of Viscount (By the way an Earl is the equivalent to a Count but more akin to Duke.) a commoner (Peasant, Man-at-Arms or Merchant) can purchase a Baronetcy and become a Baronet or Baronetess gaining the right to be called Sir, You'll go from commoner to Noble in no time as long as you have the will, courage and means!

    You can go from peasant to lord as i have shown above as long as you have the means, but BEWARE the life of a lord is not an easy one where you can sit around all day sipping wine and bedding wench's, You as the Lord of the fiefdom assigned to you (Your land with all you peasant's and what not on it.) are responsible for looking after your Peasants and your vassals (Your vassals are those of a lower rank than you who live on your land and swear an oath, Peasants are exempted from this and do not need to swear an Oath.) if a rebellion starts on your land due to harsh treatment then you won't receive any help from you Lord oh no, In fact your Lord is liable to help the rebellion and kill you instead.

    Here's the ranking system below -

    Earl - The de facto leader/Lord of the Earldom, The Earldom is his fiefdom and land/space. (Those who are descended from an Earl in real life and has proof along with you family coat of arms can become an Earl, Pm EarlWentworth otherwise known as Trevor your proof if you do and the realm will grow with another Earldom in the fold!)

    Earl's Steward/Stewardess - The steward may or may not be a noble, he cannot command other lords to do his bidding but he has the power to ruin one, He handles recruitment, PR and Diplomacy as well from time to time.

    Viscount/Viscountess - Just below an Earl but above a Baron, a powerful lord indeed, Only those who have the pedigree to become a Viscount (Coat of Arms and proof.) or trust of the Earl may become one.

    Baronet/Baronetess - A Commoner (Peasant, Man-at-Arms and Merchant's) who has purchased a fiefdom and thus also buying the title.

    Baron/Baroness - A Loyal, hardworking and courageous Knight who after a long time of good service to the Earldom may be granted a larger fiefdom and promoted to Baron.

    Knight - A Knight is the minimum rank required to be called Sir, a knight controls a small fiefdom and is always part of the Earldom's Military force.

    Merchant - A rich man who makes money by trading activities.

    Man-at-Arm's - These are the Knight's best warriors and also his companions.

    Footmen - These are the foot soldier's in the Earldom's military force and are usually peasants who wish to try their hand at warfare.

    Peasant - Despite the name that many think to be Derogatory. It's not, the peasant's are the Earldom's average citizen and are also the lifeblood of the Earldom, Peasant's are divided into sub-categories and have their own hierarchy that alas i cannot explain for peasant's confuse us lord's but each peasant has their own profession, some might work in the shipyards while some may work in agriculture to feed the Earldom, but the bottom line is that being a Peasant isn't a bad thing!

    If your interested in joining just Pm the EarlWentworth and he'll respond to you as soon as he can! And he also doesn't know why he is referring to him self in third person!

    Now onto the Earldom backstory!

    The Wentworth family is Old... Stubborn... and Cunning, The Lord Trevor using his family traits obtained a spot on an Arkship and started on his thousand year journey through the stars, when he awoke he was surrounded by anarchy, confusion and violence "Stop this madness!" He shouted, people turned to him and so he told them that there must be Law, Order and compassion, as soon as these three words were uttered most of the crowd dispersed and left, few remained to listen to him and after an inspiring speech or two they bent the knee and swore an oath of service to the Earl... And so the Earldom was Born, a beacon of order and Justice in a sea of violence, "House Wentworth will stand tall while others fall!"

    I Hope to see plenty of comments and also i hope to receive lots pm's about joining, As i said... I HOPE!

    Thanks for your replies guys. Unfortunately most of the content in Devlogs was buried deep and I did not expect to see this content before things like first screenshot. I'm glad to see most of stuff is very close to what I proposed, only makes me more anxious to play the game.

    It takes just a quick glance, maybe three seconds, for someone to evaluate you when you meet for the first time. In this short time, the other person forms an opinion about you based on your appearance, your body language, your demeanor, your mannerisms, and how you are dressed.   With every new encounter, you are evaluated and yet another person's impression of you is formed. These first impression can be nearly impossible to reverse or undo, making those first encounters extremely important, for they set the tone for all the relationships that follows.   So, whether they are in your career or social life, it's important to know how to create a good first impression.  (Above is a copy from an article, not my work)
    Opening with an inflammatory and elitist attitude as your first sentence towards the person you are addressing for the first time ever,  does not leave a good first impression. I am sure you are a nice person and by no means am I lecturing you. Just providing a feedback on how that looks. Your response was perfect without the first line, I thank you for it.

    Welcome Wesley!  I think you would be a great match for the Outfit too.  So far we have several programmers and a couple builders on board and personally, I'm an advanced voxel builder and run a small web dev/game dev company IRL (a very small one, mind you.).  We're all about collaboration and having fun so there's not a whole lot of rules or anything.   I think we have a lot in common already

    I was simply trying to add some rock from my country and show something was new and not from 10 years ago. I was not trying to state what I was sharing was better, nor was I trying to say your taste in music not good. I am sorry you didn't enjoy it and think it's lame, but I did not post it to share with only you. I hope other people might find it nice. Also, music isn't just about sound, but also the words. So while I do like the sound from Back Horn, their lyrics are only ok I think. I could not watch the TMR video you posted as well because of blocking, but I do not understand how their genre is anything related to what I posted (As I have heard their music). I also do not understand how or why you think your opinion on music and what is "ACTUAL" art should make it so I could not share. I'm not trying to make a controversy, I just don't like that you imply I could/should post different music as it doesn't fall into what you think is Japanese Rock. Again, I just wanted to share, sorry you didn't enjoy it. Glad other people did.

    I would love to see this in DU. I would add that at some point in the leveling of the skill that it becomes possible to separate parts of your own map to sell off. Not just a selected area, but also the different elements like scans from different altitudes, with different types of scanners, and the ability to tell whether the map was made from an orbital scan or some ranger shloging though the entire area, the ability to exclude specific constructs within the maps area (like a friendly/allied base or outpost), and recalling earlier posts, creating custom markers on the sold map.  It would also be cool if jobs could be assigned that ask a player to reveal a section of a map, like a scouting mission or something.
