Both Nietoperek and Captain summarised what I was attempting to outline. If slavery is hard coded there are gameplay complexities to consider, such as enjoyability: how fun will that be for the slaves? Restrictions: for how long can someone be a slave? What can they or can they not do as a slave? Can they be forced to do certain things, and if they don't comply what are the penalties? Cost: What will it cost the slave master in terms of resources? What kind of technology would a slave master need in order to keep slaves? Freedom and capture: how would you capture people to be slaves and how do they free themselves?

I think slavery is better for roleplayers rather than a hard coded feature.

As I said earlier I'd like to see the ability to kidnap other players for ransom. Perhaps even keep them as prisoners of war and their organization will either have to barter for their return or fight to retrieve them. Could make for interesting sceneries.

I'd imagine there will be food that's high in energy, and going by other aspects of the game, it won't be easy to make or come by. I don't forsee food being such a hindrance as to divert from anything. Energy, making important equipment will be time consuming and challenging, I think it will all fit together nicely in a way that makes sense.

I really appreciate a game that has depth. It seems there are so few games out there these days with real heart and soul, real meaning and depth of gameplay. So much of it is surface, superficial.

Truly I look forward to a game that feels gritty, and sometimes even difficult, with surmountable obstacles. Having to eat, and not just that, but having the necessary technology necessary to grow the food, farm it, process it...all adds to the complexity of gameplay.

At this point we're shooting in the dark, but I don't equate food with a survival game. Dual houses many aspects, and it is essentially about surviving, but it's not at its core a survival game. We'll need to survive temperature, as mentioned in another blog, attacks from other players, we'll have to master travel and improving technology, obtaining and using fuel supplies. There's going to be so much we need to do, it feels deep, meaningful and purposeful when all elements are put together.

Dragoon, this seems like a pretty friendly exchange of ideas on the topic you raised. I may not agree that it would be an entirely viable game feature but it raises some ideas.

Neopolitan I'll share my thoughts soon on possible mechanics. It's late here and my brain is functioning at low capacity right now , but it's certainly something I'd like to see added as a part of pvp.

I doubt anyone will be sitting around singing Kumbaya, this definitely won't be the right game for that. There might be some who try. There will be some people who want to build that utopian haven, and others who will want to build a military fortress, and all kinds in between.

I think there is a small difference between being able to capture people, and then using them as slaves. To what extent do we take away the liberty of another player in order to use them for slavery. Kidnapping, using people as bartering tools, I can get behind that, but slavery seems more complex. How would a player be forced to mine, or gather other resources under slavery? I'm assuming in this instance that players were captured unwillingly via pvp.

Roleplaying slavery would be something different. If there are people or guilds that would like to roleplay being slaves, then that's up to them.

Personally, I'd rather design and use robots, than the hassle of keeping smelly humans

I'm right there with you Dhara. I imagine a lot of the time I'll be happily minding my own business, building, trading goods, services, resources and technology with fellow COP'ers, and other free spirited merchants, and probably stealing some of Kiklix's spaceships, but if someone crosses my path in the wrong way, or troubles one of my kin, then I'll gleefully turn my dark pirate side on and have a little fun.

This is about how I will be playing too.  I don't necessarily want to run amok in the universe griefing people.   I will probably be more of a merchant/peddler of sorts, doing honest business with those who do business honestly.   Might set up a couple of trading outposts on a few different planets as time goes by and try to eek out a living selling resources and the like.

But I won't rule out a bit of mischief from time to time either if I run across the right situation.  If you're stupid enough to be traveling in my sector carrying loads of valuables with NO protection or alliance with me or anything, then the opportunity might be too tasty to ignore.  But then again, I might be in a building frenzy that day and just watch you fly by.  Who knows?

It also depends on how I'm treated.  If someone tries to make me an enemy in game, I very well might oblige and choose to have some fun with it.   I"m pretty open to whatever right about now.  It's just difficult to be sure about anything this early on though.  Might end up being REALLY fun playing a troublemaker.   Just have to wait and see.

When I say good guy, I mean not bad for the sake of it. I can swing from angel to devil in a heartbeat if the circumstances are right .

I just took one of those Alighnment tests, and I came out as 'true neutral', the second closest to that were neutral good, and chaotic neutral. So pretty neutral lol. I like that, means I'm flexible.

I'm in essence, a good guy in terms of respecting the boundaries of others, but I also make a fierce and ardent enemy with good reason.

I think it's fine people have their own positions and alignments, it will definitely make for interesting adventures, and any good Organization will have it's various different characters.

That said we all share the free spirit, and 'rogue-like' status.

Bella_Astrum reacted to nietoperek in Graphical programming - easier scripting for newbies?
    Hi,

I know that DU is not planned to be easy, and scripting will be irremovable part of game mechanic. It is something cool... but write hundreds lines of code can be bothersome task for non-programmer players; beside this, scripting is quite boring in form (you know - lines and lines of numbers and letters, nothing fancy).

So. Maybe we can made scripting mini-game itself and give it some interesting graphical interface, easier to understand by "normals"? Of course "text hard mode" will be always available as second option  and even "graphical programming" can have less options than text one, like "beginner" and "veteran" versions

I not talk about simplification of programming language itself, but more about some kind of GUI/IDE for that - with auto-complete and - most important - easy graphical interface like "blocks" of code for building apps. I know at last two projects, which use this kind of editors ; LEGO Mindstorm and Scratch. Here are pictures of programs build in them:

    [sCRATCH]

    [LEGO]

EDT: Here is wiki about this style of programming. And you can even use some like this for LUA, too!

In my opinion it will decrease "starting cost" for lot of people, and it can be even inspiration for someone for start learn "true" programming

    Toughs?

Bella_Astrum reacted to Dhara in Subscription should not be its pay model
I just wanted to chime in with my two cents.  I abhor the F2P model.  It becomes all about the cash shop and the game itself sits on the sidelines.  Adding a cash shop on top of a subscription is fine by me.  But I've been dying for a good game for quite some time - just DYING.  The only way this game can be great is if the developers have a solid budget and steady income.  It's just a fact of life.  So I support the subscription model and really, really hope these guys stick to their guns and go for it.  These servers alone are going to cost a small fortune.

Not to mention the fact that its normally people who don't want to pay ANYTHING who argue for F2P.   In my experience the players who don't mind subscriptions are also the same players who spend money in the cash shops.

I think the plan they have laid out so far is a very good one.

I think of myself as Chaotic Good in real life - with the example given in D&D being Robin Hood.
One of the key elements of Chaotic is having an aversion to rules/order/law. One of the key elements of Good is high regard for life.
I typically avoid joining groups that list rules.

I joined COPS because I know Kiklix from Landmark, I've always admired his spaceship designs and I'm looking forward to funneling resources his way to help him create some cool ships in DU.
I'm thrilled to see so many people I know from Landmark here in the forums and glad several of them are joining or allying with COPS.
(The only person from the Landmark forums I don't consider a friend is Thrasy).

Labels aside, I'm pleasantly surprised to see our values aligned...
Freedom fighter, lone wolf, play by own rules...
I expect to subvert the economy by handing out a bunch of free stuff (my experience is that players are generally greedy when it comes to setting prices)
Traveling on a multi-crew ship with the members we have seems like it will be a lot of fun.

Exactly, there has to be a delicate balance. People will want to form settlements, cities, stations, and NQ recognise these things will take time, so in order for civilisation to take effective root in game, there has to be a balance between pvp and building.

    I don't think that's true.

I would bet that at any point in history no matter what level of technology is available, it would probably cost more to buy a human and keep them healthy and alive, then it would to acquire available technology that is capable of doing the same job.  If there isn't any technology available then there's nothing to compare.

And as a game mechanic it's just a bad idea for obvious reasons.

I personally do not see the need for slaves in a game that takes place 10,000+ years in the future. Could we have robots to do some of the labor, sure..but not humans.

The same cannot be said for the attacker because both Builders and Fighters will have to spend time acquiring gear and upgrading skills.
If it takes Builders 40 hours to build contstructs and Fighters 5 minutes to destroy those contrsucts - Builders will stop building. It's not worth the effort.
Blatantly unfair for Fighters to have their fun in a handful of minutes while it takes builders tens of hours to have their fun.
The devs will definitely balance that since they've stated that Dual Universe is as much a building game as it is a PvP combat game.

I think as last people from Earth we rather need love, as universal source of energy and well being

But, jokes aside, there is some middle ground on "consumption needs": food/water as a benefit, but not necessity. It is simple idea - you can live infinite time on imaginary "rations", provided by a suit (think Dune stillsuits), but if you are full and hydrated, you will perform some tasks (slighly) better. Think about some kind of temporary "buff" - nothing overpowered (that will be drugs), but above-average performance, when you have enough supplies to sustain yourself.

This way we will not be limited by agriculture in cases of exploration or pvp, but long-term settlements (or ships big enough) with food-production capabilities will provide better life for its inhabitants.

I was reading through the devblogs earlier, and had either forgotten about, or hadn't processed this part before:

So we will need food it seems, which I am glad about, it just depends on how it will be implemented.

    From this devblog: https://devblog.dualthegame.com/2014/08/17/about-the-alpha-gameplay/

Edit: Seems Halo381's post above partially answers that.
