  1. I will work on this bot then, seeing as how many people have told me they'd find a use for it.

Obviously, it's going to be open source, but the database it connects to will remain private for (also) obvious reasons.

I'll update here or make a new thread when it's ready, and I'll reach out to people who I've spoken to about testing it in their own discords.

I'm not a company, so GDPR doesn't apply here.

The authorization process will still start within the DU Community Discord, so members will still need to auth that way, but it will then sync out to individual discords so that permissions are maintained wherever the bot is used.

Of course, individual discords can override the auth on their own servers, but this is merely going to be a way for automating the process so that backer roles are in sync wherever users go.

At the moment I would argue that this is the most trusted verification system for pre-alpha members on Discord, but that will speak for itself over the coming weeks.

  2. While I would like a two-way money system, because it would be awesome to be paid to play the game effectively, 99% of the players here are going to argue against it.

Plus Novaquark will never get behind it.

So I'll give you a thumbs up here, but most everyone else who replies is going to go on about how it's a horrible idea.

  3. I think the option will be to mute the in-game music and play your own music through another application.

Speaking of music, if you want it, it's all available here: https://soundcloud.com/dualuniverse

I can't see them adding the ability to stream music natively in the game though, there would be some licensing issues I'm sure.

I wish there was though, being able to have music playing for others in the game would be awesome, although some would find it annoying.

  4. So many of you know that I wrote the Authorization system for the Dual Universe Community Discord Bot, which allows for you to link your forum account to Discord so that you can have access to the NDA channels in the DU Community Discord.

There are several hundred people using it at the moment, and although it's a bit of a process to use it, it seems to have gone over fairly well.

Here are some stats about the current linked backer accounts on Discord:

    Backer-PieChart-Aug_31_06-36-18.png

I was thinking about possibly exporting the account information in the bot database into another database, and creating a separate public Auth bot for discord that would allow for any discord to verify whether or not their members have NDA access.

This would let other groups have their own NDA channels, so they could discuss NDA topics in a safer way.

However, I'm aware that this would have privacy implications for people using the auth bot on the DU Community Discord.

So I am wondering, would anyone be opposed to me doing this, or would you guys rather me not do it and just let other discords figure out their own way of verifying people?

It's not going to hurt my feelings if you guys don't want me to create it, I just thought that perhaps it might be useful for the various communities out there.

  5. Tagging this library here, as something like this would be necessary for this idea to work:

    https://github.com/FluidSynth/fluidsynth

A small embedded C synthesizer module that can do wavetable synthesis for MIDI, provided that you have a soundfont available for it.

We could, in theory, also use this for playing raw midi files (who remembers those days?). But this idea is specifically about using LUA for interfacing with it to create music and sound fx on-the-fly.

In every good space opera, there's a soundtrack to go along with it. I think that it'd be neat if players could play certain sounds or connect their spotify for others to hear.

I'm hoping for something along those lines with this suggestion:

are you guys getting a table at PaxWest again this year?

Just curious because I'll be there Friday morning so I'd love to come say Hello if you guys are set up.

    Cheers,

    MrZombie

No, they will not be, sadly.

I was planning on going even, I canceled my hotel room though when I found out they weren't.

Quite a few mmo games I know of, one of which I play FFXIV (Final Fantasy XIV) has some sort of mentor system where highly experienced players can choose to help out newer players such as answering questions they may have, giving advice, showing them how to do things or where things are located, etc. I was wondering if it'll be good for DU to have something like this

    It absolutely would be good.

The learning curve is quite high considering all of the things they plan on doing.

I have been discussing with other pre-alpha players the possibility of doing something like this for new people during the pre-alpha, in a non-org-based way. Which is to say that I don't think that a player should have to join any specific org to get an introduction into the game, that kind of stuff should come without strings attached.

By the way, I see you're kind of new here, welcome! You should join us all on Discord ?http://dualuniverse.chat , there's plenty of people there happy to help and happy to talk about the game!

Out of curiosity, you are taking that trip for gamescom in general, rite?

I'd tip my hat but also think you are crazy if all that was just for the evening event :P

Regardless it should be a new nice trip. I kinda vividly remember your description of your San Francisco trip; Cologne central is like a walk in the park in comparison.

Assuming I can make it without last minute interruptions or surprises I will see anyone at the Irish pub at about 7 PM or slightly earlier. Or at the main event at the latest.

Kinda will be decided if I can make it till tomorrow morning or something.

I am a little crazy lol, but it was soooo worth it

  10. I know that "predefined sounds" is on the "Considered" list on Trello: https://trello.com/c/HVdTjEsH/51-functional-scriptable-speakers-able-to-play-predefined-sounds

While I think that would be cool, I think it would be cooler if we had access to a synth sound module through LUA to build and sequence our own custom sounds.

Writing sound synthesis by hand isn't unheard of in LUA, for example:

And even more, here are some tracks composed entirely with LUA:

I think that giving us the flexibility to define our own sounds with such an approach would be incredibly more valuable than choosing from a list of predefined sounds.

In case anyone is wondering, yes I am suggesting this because I want a night club in DU.

The Irish pub I referred to is "The Corkonian" by the way, at Heumarkt. Forgot the name, had to look it up again.

Use (search engine of your liking here) image search to see some pictures. Should it be too packed or not to someone's interior liking, we can also sit outside in front of it.  You better be 20 or something, just for the record. I assume those who'd be interested to meet prior are.

I don't know many other locations but I heard there's also some kind of E-Sports or gaming oriented bar called "Meltdown". Never been there but it is also sadly not really within walking distance of the area of the central station and main event so might rather be out of the picture unless you want to use bus or tram. Easy for me as I have a ticket, but additional costs for those who have none.

Is still mentioned if anyone ever wants to check it out.

I like the sound of this place, and it's only 7 minutes from my hotel.

I'm actually flying in from Austin, TX. It's a fun 18-hour trip to get there :P

AFAIK, you wont be able to blueprint something which itself is the product of a manufactured blueprint.

In the example you  mention above only the alteration would be able to be blueprinted, not the entire construct. At least thats my understanding.

IIRC you will be able to blueprint the alterations and sell those separately, but you wouldn't be able to snapshot the whole ship and sell it as your own simply because you made one change.

  13. I figured since an upcoming AMA was mentioned in the video that was released yesterday, I thought it would be useful to start a thread to collect questions people have for JC about Alpha, the roadmap, etc.

I suppose I'll start by listing a few questions I have...

    • The roadmap doesn't make any mention of server uptime. When can we expect the servers to be up for extended periods of time? (24/7 even) Is this something that we can expect during a specific phase of Alpha?
    • Is the NDA firm for all of Alpha, or is there a possibility that the NDA may be lifted before Beta starts?
    • Can we expect server uptime during the winter holiday season this year?
    • Is there a clue of sorts hidden in one of the videos that were recently published?
    • Where can we get one of those sweet Dual Universe jackets?
  14. So while most people have said they will play alone at the beginning, they believe that most other people will play in groups.

Interesting, it seems that people are pessimistic about their own solo situations. The appearance is that most people are in groups, it could be that the exact opposite is true.

My view is that we will see more organic group play situations unfold, where solo players naturally socialize and start to work together over time eventually becoming groups of their own.

I imagine I'll meet people in the game along the way and make some friends that way. There will be plenty of opportunity to at least.
