0something0 got a reaction from yamamushi in Reaction Wheels and Magnetorquers
    Introductions? Who needs introductions?

RCS: advantages: can do both rotation and translation(moving), very responsive on small craft. Disadvantages: requires fuel.

Reaction Wheels: Advantages: needs only electricity, good for fine-tune rotations. Disadvantages: requires one on each axis. There is also reaction wheel saturation where the reaction wheel can spin no faster because it spins really fast while rotating due to newton's 3rd(?) law.

Magnetorqures: Advantages: needs only electricity, good for fine-tune rotations Disadvantages: needs a magnectic field to work. Not all celestial bodies have magnetic fields.

I want to talk about Electrodynamic tethers.

BTW, the channel of the video that the OP posted is called Vintage Space. Its a great channel, recommend checking it out.

I like the idea of finite materials better though... It allows for a freer market instead of having the system controlled by Frenchmen. Δ

I also was thinking that there could be spy mapping satellites to get updates on the planetary surface on the map shown in the May DevDiary, and telescopes for detecting planets around other stars. They would be rather s***ty, and it just tells you the orbit and type(Terrestrial? Gas? etc), size, and the average temperature of the planet. To get extra details, we would have to send a probe. Speaking of probes, doesn't there have to be at least one person on ships for control? Say, we could have the probes be automated but is very fragile and cannot be edited, and needs connection by radio.

0something0 got a reaction from DevisDevine in Mining operations. volume of matter, mechanics.
I know this is old, but people don't get what e=m(c^2) means. The equation means that for any given matter with mass, the energy contained within the mass(in kilograms) is equal to the mass multiplied by the speed of light(meters per second) squared. Some examples include:

"modifying the geometry of exotic matter could reduce the mass–energy requirements for a macroscopic space ship from the equivalent of the planet Jupiter to that of the Voyager 1 spacecraft (~700 kg)[7] or less" -From the Alcubierre Drive article on Wikipedia

This means that according to the latter estimate, it would take e= 700kg * c^2 = 6.3*10^19 joules of energy to power the Alcubierre Drive.

Another example is a hydrogen atom has a mass of 938.790 million electron-volts, which, rearranging the equation e = m(c^2) to e/(c^2) = m, gives us about 1.7*10^-27 kgs per hydrogen atom.

No, accelerating mass to the speed of light WILL NOT turn it into energy. accelerating mass to C would take an infinite amount of energy since relativistic effects go up exponentially as you get closer to the speed of light.

    ......

I think it would be nice to have a drill, not a big one, but a relatively small one that you can attach to a craft to make a drilling truck. They would be power-intensive and heavy so you can't attach like 50000 of them in one ship. Also, dynamite for blast mining would be cool too.

    ......

Personally, I think we need to focus more on space mining. A lot of sci-fi tends to focus a lot on planets, even though from a practical perspective, that is much less efficient since you have to travel in and out of large gravity wells which take a lot of energy. Besides, I imagine the largest ships will be assembled in orbit, so having the materials right next to the site in an asteroid would be more convenient. Also, by promoting space mining, it would open up planetary surfaces to other uses.

making a text based file in the game folder with all the texts of the game is a nice way to make the game translateable. everyone can edit and share it, and the best even publlished with the game itself in the future...

Lel. That very statement proves how toxic he is. But lets not feed the trolls

How about this? Once a DAC has been traded for in-game cash, the DAC becomes physical. This means if the DAC you got was for IRL money/Kickstarter award, then it acts like currency and is non-lootable. However, once a DAC has been traded, it becomes physical and you can do all sorts of shinanigans to it.

So, I was thinking, what if, you can make more or less of your body cybernatics? So, replacing your other arm with robotic arms for example.

    Some key modules:
-Advanced Brain: makes skill training quicker
-Caloric converter: turns food into energy useable by implants
-Energy converter: turns energy into calories
-Backup Life Support: backup systems to replace failing organs from combat(or something) to prevent dying long enough to get to safety

    Biology route
    -Needs organic food
    -not as much endurance
    -more fragile

    Cybernetics route
-Needs expansive repair materials and energy cells
-Drugs Performance-enhancers doesn't work as well
    -Needs skills to implant/use

0something0 reacted to Lord_Void in Planets running out of resources?
Like the others have said, two main protections against the starting planet becoming desolate are the sheer size of the planet and the quantity of resources on it and people's nature to head to other worlds rather than stay and strip mine everything.

That being said, those only delay the depletion of the resources on the starting planet. And the planet does not have to be completely depleted for it to be a huge inconvenience to new players. There may be deposits of ore 2km underground on the other planet, but no brand new player should be expected to be reliant on that. Join the game, walk for two hours, dig for four more hours, congratulations you have iron ... that is a sure way to deter new players. Part of the solution to this can (and should) be player driven: manpower is extremely valuable so it is very likely that orgs will lavish new players with free goods and provide free transport to their areas.

Additionally, the devs could add game-level features to deal with this in the long term. One solution they mentioned is to allow players to start at other arkships as they are discovered. Or they could introduce a basic tutorial that would eventually provide new players with a very basic ship so they could go somewhere that has resources.

i disagree: there are many Minecraft servers that are practially single-shard MMO, usually a Factions server. That being said, you can turn Minecraft into anything if you throw enough mods and plugins at it.

0something0 reacted to MatzaJew in Planetary Racing League
I know that NQ doesn't have any kind of road map for wheels at this time. And while I'm sure that's based on their projections to having a stable single shard Universe. There have been other threads started about wanting wheels for the sake of having them but not too much linear thought down that line of what we would do with them beyond the obvious.
So I propose (Assuming we get wheels and any other form of locomotion) we work towards having a Planetary scale race track!
For those who have seen the Anime 'Redline' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lH7eBCTu_eM  There is a Race that is held in 3 teirs. Blue, Yellow, then Red 'Line'. At the highest class about a dozen racers have a ground race where the vehicles go sometimes several hundred miles per hour with the race lasting somewhere in the 1+ hours range. The main Idea for this race is primarily based on this anime.

-A track would need to be built with crazy speed in mind, varying types of vehicle types and weight to power ratio classes.
-So wheeled (if implemented), hover, *anti grav*?, skid, legs, possibly a flight type as well.
-Could do a Newton output maximum with a weight minimum perhaps.

Would like to know some feed back on if this would be something everyone would be interested in doing. Have all corporations and organizations large and small compete in this race that could impact the winner in a huge way. Vehicle designers could be awarded contracts for having their blueprints churned out by large military factions wanting the winning design. Drivers could be hired out based on skill shown in the lower brackets and be sought after by the highest bidder. There are tons of opportunities here!

There are some key issues I'm sure I'm unaware of that could make or break this idea but wondered what everyone here thinks.
(Please remember to be constructive with your criticism, if you think this is a terrible idea please detail it)

0something0 got a reaction from yamamushi in Ore Refining
How realistic will ore refining be? Is it as simple as chucking it into a magic refinery 2000? or do you need to get pitchblende ore, crush it up and dissolve it in water, leach it with sulfuric acid, filter it, separate the uranium by ion exchange, precipitated from the solution, filtered, turn it into uranium hexafluoride, and then put it into a centrifuge to separate the u-235 and get it into reactor-grade uranium?
    spruce: http://www.world-nuclear.org/nuclear-basics/how-is-uranium-ore-made-into-nuclear-fuel.aspx

And I imagine if it is the latter, its going to require a lot of skill. I remember somebody posting that he would like see more specilized fields, and I feel like this is heavily going to need it/

Guys, I think the amount of salt crystal buildup in the server is costing them lotta cash

The thing is, we can argue about how parabolas aren't needed at relativistic and ftl velocities all day long, but the place where we are going to use orbital mechanics the most is near planets when we are doing fine-tune movements.  I mean, we can just set the star to NOT have gravity, just planets only, especially considering the devs aren't planning to have orbits for the planets(a decision that I prefer be otherwise). Orbital mechanics will add quirks to combat...

Metric is still better than a fictional unit.
A lot of the world's population uses metric.
And metric can be taught in less than a minute (Everything in distances is done with prefixes [Kilo is 1000, Hecto is 100, Deca is 10, Meter is Meter, Deci is 1/10, Centi is 1/100, milli is 1/1000.] Congratulations. You just joined 9/10 of the worlds population. [However, there is much more but I mustn't teach you.]).

Compared to Imperial? We use body parts... That is correct. Body... parts... And everyone is different.

And making a fictional system is basically metric with different names and prefixes.

"You are 5 kilovoxels away from-"
"Jason. Stop roleplaying and use metric. 5 Kilometers."
    "You are 3 miles-"
Jason was exiled from the faction.
