  1. This "idea" was posted in general, not the idea subforum. I think he just wants to talk about such self-replicating robots in general.

Short answer: Van-Neumann machines have to be killed on sight and have to be exterminated ASAP - Your turn to figure out why ;)

The grey ooze cometh and bringeth the end of days.

  2. Everything can be abused, but a well setup system will minimize any abuse.

There are two things being discussed here: 1) stand alone "speakers" (no player involved) and 2) sound originating from a player.

The first, stand alone speakers, is unlikely to happen for the same reason that streaming movies in game are unlikely: put enough of these at any one place and it will lag the server/client. One way to get around this is to have the player opt in to view/listen to one at a time. This could be a way to stream in game content to an in game screen.

The second, sound from players, I do really want in the game. This can be limited by first only allowing voice for those within a certain distance from the player (or within antenna range), and second it can again be opt in, like joining a chat channel in discord. But, why not just use a third party program like discord? The third party program does not know about players relative positions in game which means different crews can speak to each other separately. But the biggest advantage is having conversations with strangers: friends you have not met yet.

With the above two points combined, we really can open hailing frequencies.

  3. Games that depend on physics (like most ball games) will depend on the in game physics. If they don't move around when hit, then the ball games simply won't function. So we will have to see.

Board games with moving pieces should be doable, even if it's the players themselves enforcing the rules. Though the size of the board would again depend on how it all hangs together in game. If GUIs are customizable in game then these games might not even be made up of voxel pieces.

More ideas? Post em here and/or come chat on the DICE discord: https://discord.gg/B6a48gr

  4. Yes. There will be a faster form of travel in the form of stargates, but these are not planned to be available at release but as an expansion, later. I do recall something about an interplanetary drive: something for a ship to move between planets a bit faster, though I might be imagining this one (add it to the idea box, if it's not a thing).

What there won't be is a kind of fast travel used in skyrim, for example. Ships will *not* be able to instantly teleport to points they have already visited.

Will worm holes exist? Not mentioned at the moment. But as an exploration tool, these could be a very interesting idea, especially if they are randomly created in unexplored space and disappear once used. Anyone want to go on a massive voyage?

  5. Welcome to the first Cinderfall Syndicate DU contest.

The competition is completed! A big thanks to all those that participated and the voters. Also big thanks to Cinderfall Syndicate for sponsoring the prizes.

The winners are Code24, MrStarWars and D. Diablo. With random draw being DarkNovation.

See here for more information: https://board.dualthegame.com/index.php?/topic/10623-csyn-contest-picture-this-the-poll/?p=43096

What is the competition?: This is a art/digital art competition for the best looking space themed design you can create. This includes anything that can pass for a construct in Dual Universe, including but not limited to buildings, ships, hovercraft, space stations etc. It must be your own creation and must be made especially for this competition. In game screenshots and 3D modelling tools are allowed as long as the design is your own.

Who is the competition open to?: Everyone that has an account on the forums. Cinderfall Syndicate administrators may enter the competition but are not eligible to win prizes.

What do you need to do to enter?: Take a picture of your design and post the picture on this thread. One entry per person. No alts please ;)

What do you win?: game keys!

    Timelines:

When did it start?: 16th December 2016.

Entries closed at the end of 28th December 2016. CLOSED

Voting occured from 29th December to 4th January. A poll was created here: https://board.dualthegame.com/index.php?/topic/10623-csyn-contest-picture-this-the-poll/

Winners were announced on 5th January 2016 here https://board.dualthegame.com/index.php?/topic/10623-csyn-contest-picture-this-the-poll/?p=43096 CLOSED

The winners are Code24, MrStarWars and D. Diablo. With random draw being DarkNovation.

There will be 3 community voted winners (top three get same prize) and a random winner.

    1st place: Space Engineers key*

    2nd place: Space Engineers key*

    3rd place: Space Engineers key*

    Random draw: Space Engineers key*.

*If the winner already has this game, we can exchange it for another game.

  6. Another thought on this topic. Given that we'll be members of corporations, and exploration and use of probes will be more aligned to organisation activities given statements on type and duration of resource investment ex probes. I wonder how exploration knowledge could be shared between players, organisations, factions. I'm wondering whether every organisation need to conduct exploration - will exploration knowledge be shared globally or by faction (ex. faction research in anarchy online), or even individually (like no mans sky).  if individually could it be shared across players like bookmarks were in the early days of eve. Interesting times.

I am hoping for something modular. Parts of exploration data that can be shared between players or sold on the marketplace. A galactic map which you can share, partly or as a whole, with your friends or organization as you see fit. Indeed interesting times.

  7. This could be an interesting event, though not very high on my wish list.

Everyone is wearing a spacesuit so actually contracting a disease shouldn't be that simple, but a small rupture could lead to the disease spreading.

This idea needs to be expanded on a bit more.  What are the potential vectors? What does a disease do mechanically? Could this also be used for in game computer viruses? Could some people be carriers while others feel the full effects of the disease?

  8. Early game will have hover elements so that we can build hovercraft.  In a futuristic setting, it makes more sense to hover technology over the more mundane wheel. But I could be biased against wheels since the last lot I created in Space Engineers ripped my craft apart and decided to attacked me.  I made them stop moving by shooting them. YMMV.

That said wheels might be added later.
