Well if the devs don't implement something like that (which most likely won't happen for release), then you have to simply take times with good old clocks and rely on players acting as referees. You simply can't assume that every bit of block, voxel, technology or possible script for such races will be implemented. That's why I would plan for a 100% manual system and a rule set which covers this. You can work from there and come up with maybe more and more ideas on how to use actual game mechanics to automate certain stuff.
But assuming that everything should be possible from the start is just overbearing

Halo381 reacted to Anaximander in Collision Damage: Do we REALLY need it?
Thing is, the Devs can introduce collision damage without having to resort to voxel-to-voxel calculations. An Impulse mechanism can be added, that would also make both G-forces a thing, as well as explosions on collision also a thing, by virtue of mass ratios comparisons and exploding reactors / capacitors / accumulators.

The real problem is voxel-to-voxel calculations for collision. Comparing masses is not even remotely as heavy as voxel-to-voxel calculations are. It's just mass comparison, with some caveat of solving in regards transversal acceleratiorn.

As planets are constructs in the eyes of the game engine, a collision of a ship on a planet, would mean ALWAYS that a ship would explodde on impact of 500+ m/s2 for example, while the planet's normal G attraction of 10 m/s2 would not pp any ship-- which is something the devs just have to fine tune as of a mechanism, to guarantee ships won't blow up on landing ala Space Engineers.

That way also, covercrafts or speeders or w/e, are in risk of blowing up if they were to collide on a cannyon wall, at very high speeds, as the same principle applies of impulse - brutal deceleration => exploding power supply => make-shift collision HP bar.

And there's no such thing as "torpedo" ships that way. A battleship can't really accelerate to the point it would pop a power generator - because physics - at least, not in the time frame of an actual battle.

    Hi there,

Just to clarify a few points about safe zones:
    - Yes, there will be a safezone around the Arkship.
    - If some other Arkships (that have successfully landed and with colonists still alive) are discovered, then there will be a Safe Zone around them.
    - Discovering another Arkship is supposed (at the moment, but it might change) to be extremely rare.
    - All this doesn't mean other ideas have been abandoned: ruins from an extinct civilization as places to build/activate Safe Zones is still a possible idea, and if validated, it will probably the most classic way to see new safe zones appearing. However, if the team goes with this idea, it doesn't mean either that you will be able to find such ruins on each planet (far from it).

    Best regards,
    Nyzaltar.

Halo381 reacted to ATMLVE in "Probably After Release"
There are always lots of questions about Dual Universe... Some of the same questions get asked a lot, but people are still always coming up with new ones. One of the most common answers to any question is... "Probably not at release." I realize there are a lot of things that can be pushed off for a time, but I am afraid that there are some features which may be initially neglected which will later become very difficult to implement.

For instance, I would love for hostile environments/weather to cause wear/damage over time. Extreme heat, sandstorms, toxic rain, etc. requiring different materials and skills to be able to operate in these environments would be awesome (my opinion of course) for the game, but if I asked whether this will be added the answer would be "probably not at release." But how could you implement something like that later down the road? It would be difficult. You would have to wait for new planets to be generated and then give them those effects; after all, the developers can't just say: "Update 5.67: Surprise! All of your bases on sand planets are now being torn apart by sandstorms. You need a new material we've introduced to make anything that can last there now."

Something like customizable elements is a great example of what can totally be added in at a later time, with little to no negative effects. But something like significant weather, or gas giants, or new materials, I feel are things that really either need to be in at the start, or it'll just be a hassle to integrate later. Some others might be:

    - Food: Spawn into the new update of the months-old game, suddenly you are hungry with no food. A whole new economy based around food now has to be created.

    - Farming: Farming requires land. If an org knows this from day 1, they may design their bases around providing themselves with land for crops or animals. If instead, they find out on day 100 that it's now going to be beneficial to have tons of open plains, and here they've built themselves a city with large flat one to two story buildings, now they're screwed.

Of course NovaQuark can't add in everything at the start. They can't know what update they'll want two years down the road. But, to rephrase what I've said, I don't want features which would otherwise be awesome and good for the game, to instead hurt it because they were added in at a later date after the game had already developed around their non-existence.

One thing I am suggesting is... You can lynch me if you want. But add in, especially for alpha and beta, add in features that seem like they would be difficult to implement later into the game in at least a buggy state, so that way players can at least somewhat adapt to their presence. Yes, I am suggesting cramming in features in a buggy state rather than having a mostly stable game. I think that, in the long run, it'll end up for the better.

Please let me know if you agree or completely disagree. I know people will disagree; I'm sure of it! Maybe you can change my mind with brilliant logic or reasoning. Please, of course, let me know, but please understand that I am very open to being disagreed with.

Halo381 reacted to ATMLVE in Nomadic Life in Dual Universe
A group of people can certainly try to live off of just a single ship, and indeed there are orgs that want to do that, like the Blue Moon. The issue is there will be other people that want those resources too. As you said, nomad tribes would sometimes fight with each other. You can bet that if a decently well armed ship trying to mine some resources stumbles across a less armed ship doing the same thing, there's going to be conflict.

Undoubtedly there will be people that will spend all their time on a ship, never settling on a base. Perhaps a Migrant Fleet or a lone little cruiser. Either way, it's a cool way to play, and it might work out well, but if you have all of your stuff with you and you go out on your own all the time, there's a good chance you'll find trouble.

It's a high risk/reward system... I'm sure some people wouldn't have it any other way.

Hello everybody, i wish to play a game. Not any game that is, but a text based game for you forum people.

    What is it like?

Well imagine Hunger Games, or any other Battle Royale kind of game that you have encountered before.
That's pretty much how it is going to be like. It's however based on my own creativity and everything is something i've
come up with myself and wish to share. Also don't forget that this is tweaked to sci-fi setting.

Now how is it going to be set up?

It will be set up the way that people interested in participating will have to PM me to reserv a player slot, there will be a max of 10 players.
When it starts every player will get to make one move per day, and this is based on live time. The moves will consist of having your
character either travel around the map or attacking, sleeping, chasing gear or whatever more that is presented at the start. Players are also allowed to communicate with eachother in the comment log but it should be limited talk, i cannot however restrain people from talking too much but you get the point.

[The map can be found here: http://imgur.com/a/X13nI ]

Day one all participants will spawn in the Sector Zero, in this middle point sector there will be weapons, gear, items of different kinds.
If you wish to grab an armored space suit or run away to another sector and hide is all up to the players themselves.
I will be using a random number generator where i've put in possible events everyday and it will tell me if an event will happen that day
and if so, which kind. More importantly a random generator or dice roller will also be used for attempted attacks, everyone will have the
same chances (accuracy) when trying to shoot another player.

EXAMPLE OF A HAPPENING: "Day 3 starts out with Player Y moving across the dangerous mountain tops at Sector A1 only to his horror face Player X waiting for him on the north side. Y Wants revenge for the equippment stolen from him Day 2 and blasts X in the chest with his Standard Issue Pistol for (damage) X twitches and turns around and dives down a cave in the mountain side 50 metres behind him. He has to spend his night there.

[Here is a quickly made doc listing the setup for this game: https://docs.google.com/document/d/12eJagXkPi_ubd1dcYZOeNf0g_AbOIa6FTgA3xzIJnbU/edit?usp=sharing]
(Note that damage, health and other things like that will not be revealed until it starts)

There will be rules for how you can move, for one you might have two movement points per day, you can use one to move from a sector to an adjacent one or hide the night in shelter, maybe attack another player. Or to two of these things. Some options will be presented to you as hidden features that you discover if you get into a situation with the right requirements.

So when would this game start?

Preferably i will fill all 10 participant slots and thus be able to decide on a date pretty fast, otherwise i'll give it a few days and then set a starting date with the participants there are.

I would like to reward the winner of this game as well, if anyone has any idea for this or want to help running this show feel free to PM me.

The word ‘tuemen’ is Mongolian and the name of the 10,000-man division that formed the core of the Mongol Army under Chingis Haan. Likewise, the Tuemen Foundation is the central resource for the study of military art and warfare in Alioth. It is an independent organization and holds firmly to a neutral stance to all other organizations in or originated from Alioth.

Our purpose is to record and study the conduct of warfare among combatants, and the composition and effectiveness of their forces. In this way we hope to provide the means of avoiding military disaster and reducing death and destruction of property. We are analysts of war and historians of warfare from the earliest times on Earth to the present era of Alioth.

Hiya, folks. Seemed like a good idea to put together an org focused on warfare and military history for Dual Universe. It's an academic organization that caters to no one and provides a forum for those of like mind, where they can discuss and debate on military trends or theories pertaining to the world of Alioth and its environs. If interested please feel free to submit an application to join the org.

If you enjoy discussing topics like military history and the military arts this may be an organization you'll enjoy.

    <<Location: geo:-31.2,136.816667>>

    Over one hundred years ago...

It is a dark and stormy night when you arrive at Port Drum. If you are a regular of the three day trip to or from from Armstrong Crater, you know this is always the case, a side effect of some 20 moon-shots and returns a day.

Port Drum is one of the world's busiest lunar transit sites, handling most of the non-commercial traffic bound to or from in-system. As a transport hub, it is intensely busy, and one would be forgiven for not realising that not even a kilometre away was the end of a teeming transient populace and the start of desert for as far as the eye could see, until one eventually hit Perth some 2500 kilometres (around 1600 miles) away. Originally it was a military testing range, this sprawling space port covering an area larger than England named Woomera by the original inhabitants – now gone centuries past when the Australian mainland had become too damaged by climate change to sustain human settlement. Perth, the closest real urban centre, was now the most isolated (and subterranean) city in the world – a last stubborn holdout against a Southern Hemisphere summer which would kill an exposed man in under an hour. People finding themselves in Port Drum aren't like the huddled masses scratching out an existence in the camps around the Arks - people here have stories to tell.

Aiken’s Bar is typical of the drinking holes one finds in places which people never really call home. Dark, smoke filled and possessed with the quiet murmur of people who don’t like or trust the general patronage, and prefer to huddle in their own small cliques, talking amongst themselves.

You pause at the top of the steps, wondering if you are making the right choice entering. This was not your place, not your world. Your mianzi – your social standing and reputation, mean nothing here. But it doesn't look at first glance that those within give a tinker’s cuss about saving, or losing, face, or indeed, what level of social influence they exert at all. These people are Belters for the most part – miners and spacers who provide much of the raw materials required by a high technology society, let alone the Project Rebirth, which can not be sourced natively on Earth.

As you descend into the darkness, the details of the bar become clearer. Behind the bar stands the bartender, a short, skinny and mostly toothless Latino who you take took to be the bar owning Aiken in question, (by simple virtue of his black tool-jock’s shirt with his name stitched in cursive white over the pocket). He nods at you uninterestedly.

Scattered throughout the crowd are the obvious Alphas, easily spotted – off duty ship-security types, mercenaries, one or two off duty UMF officers, some escort pilots and more than a few of what you are pretty sure are pirates of various shades. Violence has remained, despite the calm of the world, surprisingly common place once one leaves atmosphere.

In other corners you spot Ethereans, discussing art, philosophy and politics, Emporeans cutting deals and more than one drunken Luminous academic debating with their peers, and every other representation of humanity one can think of.

Halo381 reacted to Anaximander in Cloaking device
Actually, energy usage would not be linked to the field itself.

The EM field that would refract light, would simply be a calibrated shield module(s) that are constantly rotating around the ship to make consic radiation not touch the ship, thus "invisibility". However, if another ship was to even comre remotely near the cloaked ship, said proximity and emissions, would make the capacitor of the cloaked ship go out very very quickly, thus, the stealth has a very weird "roximitty" basis.

EVE was not so full of shit after all, ships in cloak do lose their invisibility field if they get near an object of any kind that's not cloaked, as the invisibility bubble "pops".

However, the OP doesn't get into account some things, like skill training on using said moduels, or different types of detection, like detectig ships easily, if they are heavier / more massive via gravitometry, so his idea of "cloaked drone battleships" (as his entire post collection it becomes more and more apparent as of what the OP is aiming for), won't really work as a plan. Invisibility means people can't see you, it doesn't mean you suddenly vanished from time and space and cannot be picekd up by other means.

I am an advocate for modular designs and add-ons with utility when it comes to fitting a ship. Make a shield module have an "add-on" that makes the shield around a ship intensify to the point it block light from touching the ship, but make said shield drop after another ship gets near for a certain pyeriod which is tied to a ship's capacitor size - as Capacitors, are meant to compensate for fluctuations in a powergrid, they are not accumulators, which are the things that actually STORE power out of a generator.

Also, make people who use cloak unable to see outside their ship, as invisibility works BOTH ways, so cloaky ships actually take brains to fly and needing actually a crew of multiple people to oeprate them and navigate with them. Gravitometric scanners for the win.

Either you pay on a monthly basis or you earn enough ingame cash to buy a DAC from another player and use it. So essentially you can play for free if you make enough ingame money.

No, F2P is no option here because of the single shard server
No, B2P is no option here because of the single shard server and the resources your character needs (server side) each month

We want quality gameplay with good mechanics and good gameplay and expansions, so P2P is the only viable option here

Hello everyone, I am making this post to ackowledge that I was in the wrong from the start. I want to appoligize for my past comments and behavior towards the community. It all started with the spam issue, and everything errupted from there. I am sorry how I did not take the advice as I should have. We have made many mistakes, and I sincerely am sorry for how everything has turned out because of these mistakes. For example, we messaged too many users to help promote our organization. Also, we did not take the advice given with the amount of respect it deserved. Yes, we failed to generate good relations with many organizations. I am extremely sorry-

And would like to say I am now working on my attitude towards the community. I will show more effort into taking advice. I will learn from the mistakes I have made in the past, and show all the effort I can to fix our damage. We have done a lot wrong, and have treated the community in ways that are not okay. As you can tell a lot of mistakes have been made. That is now in the past, as I will do everything I can to improve our relations, and not repeat the mistakes.

As I will try my very best, I am asking everyone to also be a bit more peaceful towards us. Start fresh, and speak about the future. If we can all make an effort to fix the past mistakes and start fresh, I see an amazing future. Also, I have taken all of the advice in the past into consideration now. I am using it to help fix this reputation.

I am sincerely sorry for everything that has happened. And am sorry how the relations played out in return.

Let's try our best to be more open, and give me one last chance. Yes, I should earn my relations back, but also don't make it so tough that it is not worth it..
Thank you all for the advice, as I will try my best to improve everything. I will change in attitude and work hard to remain in peace.

On the community site, we should have the ability to make orgs that are members of orgs. Numbers of members is calculated by adding up the total number of members of each org.
To my knowledge this will be possible in game and then we could more accurately represent larger organizations. For instance, Cinderfall Syndicate would include all cinderfall organizations and staff, rather than relying on players to join multiple orgs, they are automatically added to the count of both when they join a cinderfall organization.

Wow, you have a lot of questions that's good. Enthusiasm is good. That being said, there are already threads discussing some of your questions, so I'd like to recommend you check those out and read through all the Q&A threads before you keep posting more questions. Or compile them all into a mega thread.

The following is all subject to change I imagine:

The planets will vary in size from up to around 100km in radius to something smaller (I don't have a number for that).
Moons will vary from planet to planet, with some having a lot and some having a few (or none).
I can't remember whether planets orbit the sun (I don't think so, due to the issue of collision detection increasing server load) but the planets do rotate on their axis.
The distance between orbital bodies will vary from system to system as the universe is all procedurally generated, but they will be big enough that interplanetary travel will be not something you do all the time somewhere around 15 minutes to a few hours between planets).

I believe asteroids can be moved if you attach engines to them, but I'm not sure. There is a thread on that somewhere.

I hope that answered some of your questions!

    1) They are called Gas Giants

    2) It's a good idea, only problem being they are Giants and have to be larger in volume than a planet. Besides that, the devs should first refine solid mineral gathering, before moving to gas extraction in the form of Gas Giants. The problem with the gathering part, being that the game has no water physics in the way you would expect, thus gas physics would be clunky (carved gas giant surfaces as you "mine" gas), which in the context of a voxel octree shape, means every time you mine, if the voxels were to adjust for removal of "volume", it would have to alter the entire of the gas voxel giant's shape by a certain margin per gathering cycle you perform.

    3) The moons ideas is nice, only again, the size of the planets s very limited for the moment (100 km radius planets) so moons are quite smaller than you'd expect.

So, it's more of a cool feature to have Gas Giants, but not very crucial to the game? So it can wait for later on down the game's history I guess I mean, it's something the Devs have said already, that more features will come as the game goes on post launch, so, it's not that crazy to have Gag Giants come a year post launch

I would say in order to command respect, a large organization would let another org know they are going to attack before they actually do it. If they don't, since they are a large organization everyone will see it and know what happened. Lots of other smaller orgs will see that and may wonder if they are next... That large org will become unpopular and probably make enemies just by treating everyone else with arrogance. So in the best interests of the longevity of a large and powerful organization, I think it would be a smart move and we could probably expect to see that. On the other hand, smaller orgs might not care so much about things like that, and indeed they wouldn't really need to.

So yes, I think we could expect to see declarations of war, but more commonly with famously large orgs.

Copyright infringement (and maybe how to avoid it) Disapproved types of org names (Apple, Microsoft, etc.) Currently, creating an organization does not require one to even visit the forums. Since NQ's statements about aforementioned things are hidden inside certain topics (as far as I know), I feel they go unnoticed by many organization founders. Also, the org creation page only offers a link to the early devblog post about orgs that mentions nothing about copyright. I do not know how the copyright-wise problematic orgs are officially dealt with, but have seen some other forum users politely notifying newfound orgs about clear issues. It is admirable, but in my opinion should not be relied upon.

I realise we have not even hit alpha test yet, but still believe that adding the suggested information into mandatory text every organization founder should read would reduce unnecessary frustration.
