What about a console like in star trek? If it's not in the game, then it's just not in the game. Can't change that.

I've told everyone I know personally several times.

Some are just pessimists and don't like to wait for a game. Dont want to get their hopes up.

Others just dont care, they are burned out on kick starters, green lights and everything.

And MANY MANY "GAMERS" just want to complain about something. They do not want to contribute any ideas, they just want to say something and sound important, but dont actually care about games.

Halo381 reacted to ClockworkRose in Gas, Gas Giants, and Gas Harvesting.
One cool addition to the game would be Gas Giants, Nebula, and other forms of gas in space (and maybe on planet surfaces). These could be large and (gameplay wise) slowly replenishing resources. You could harvest it by flying a ship through a nebula with a collector attachment, or dragging a collector on the surface of a gas giant. Maybe even construct a station in a nebula that is constantly collecting a small quantity.

You could harvest everything and get the same nebulous "Gas". or if you wanted to make things more interesting, You could have different gasses, with different sources and different uses. Methane, Hydrogen, etc.

Then you could go as complicated as you want for its uses. The logical first step is reactant for a chemical rocket. Probably some sort of early game fuel, preceding reactionless rocket tech. Following that, hydrogen gas could be processed into a a reactant in a fusion reactor. All sorts of things are possible for propulsion. Maybe you need to restock your maneuvering jets every once in a while.

You could also need the gases for processing and creating elements in factories. Maybe they are needed as a catalyst, or you need a huge refinery with dozens of steps and feedback to create rare compounds.

One major problem I see is implementation. I don't know what their engine looks like, but I didn't see much in the way of gasses or nebulae in any of the videos that have been shown. It might take some magic to make it work in their voxel system, and it might not even work at all.

    Thoughts?

Not really. The two games are based around entirely different concepts.

NMS is all about exploration. Get to the center of the galaxy as fast as you want, and discover a ton of crap along the way

DU is all about emergent gameplay, and creating a new world for yourself.

Sorry to be the one to break it to you, but micromanaging is what the LUA scripts are for. And you can't expect having such a powerful tool for free. I would suggest reading the devblog on what you just described. And Fusion Reactors need fuel, it's called hydrogen, and battleships run on fuel, DPUs (who are like CPUs), will need power. They confirmed there will be pipelines to bring power to different screens, modules etc. This is not EVE 2.0 with arbitrary HP points. You blow a ship's power grid off, you gutted them good.

And where would you dock to refuel? The non-existing NPC docks? Players will make the fuel. Players will make the docks. And players want money. Ain't nobody building things for pretty's sake.

Yes, indeed, there should be an energy - string-of-commands ratio on how much a DPU consumes. Also, how a builder of a ship handles the cost vs the effectiveness of the ship is what the voxel building system is for and will show who has skill at making good ships, as the ships will have mass depending on materials. So, you can build a ship out of steel, but it will be heavy, OR you can build the ship's frame out of steel and its hull and outfit the interior with lesser grade materials of your choice, then balance the thrusters so the ship is not derpy on its flight and then you manage the amount of power cores. A good example would be the Titans in EVE.

Sure, you can build the Titans of EVE in Dual, but it would take time for people to figure out the correct materials, fuel efficiency and how to fly iit. Dual is not a point and click adventure on a flat map like EVE is. A ship has to have thrusters above and below it to move up and down (similar to Space Engineers) and guess what, an accelerating, massive ship, will have to put more power into its thrusters to avoid an enemy ships broadside in a firing run. Again, this won't be like EVE's combat system where two ships stand across one another and pew pew, with random numbers dictating the outcome. DUAL aims for a lock-on system and those automated lock-ons of a ship like a Titan, would have to be powered to provent solo players from building them, but giving big organisations with resources a reason to establish dominance.

If you find calculating center of mass, researching ways of reducing mass on a ship and the correct way to build a ship's frame or having to learn how to script in LUA, then I am afraid that building ships is not for you. But hey, you can be the best pilot that ever's going to be.

when ever DU gets a full release i wouldn't be surprised if it takes several months before a proper fully fledged government-like body would appear (with any real power). What we as the players would see at the start would be the formation of numerous corporations that only really have influence within themselves.
But when a government body does appear and depending on what type of government it is the regular player would have to abide by that governments laws, taxes and regulations in government controlled areas. And if you were a citizen of said Nation the laws/taxes would extend to you even if you were out of government controlled areas. But being a citizen for a said nation would also have its benefits, such as unobstructed travel within governments lands, rights to own land under your name, Trade discounts, Citizen safety backed by army, the list goes on.
I wouldn't really be a guy that would like to start up one but if one comes around and that their benefits fit my needs i would like to apply for citizenship no matter what government type it is.

I like the concept, but I feel that if you could transition between planets with that kind of system, people would tend to stagnate with expansion. If you used this concept as a awesome way to transition between different player/group controlled tiles on a planet, that would add a interesting mechanic for battles, allowing different kinds of strategies involving moving troops from one battle field to the opposite site, in essence creating a super dynamic flanking system, as well as being a nice and compact transportation system.

My impression is that we will be pushed to travel interstellar space as we deplete worlds of resources.
Apparently, we will be able to set up TUs in space... I'm guessing the range of Arkification for a bubble territory in space will be quite controversial.

Part of the challenge of the game will be maintaining a safe zone for months or years.
Once we  move past a solar system, we should be able to find remote locales off the beaten path.
But, who knows what kinds of scanners people will discover or develop.
It may be that marauders eventually come hunting your world for resources or other loot. And I expect there to be a means for rivals to de-Arkify territories.
You'll just have to try to acquire a new Arkification token before others encroach on your territory.

Halo381 reacted to yamamushi in Collaborating on Fanmade Music
    Hi Everyone,

I'm wondering if there is anyone here who might want to collaborate on some fan music for Dual Universe.

Nothing official, clearly, but just something fanmade that people can listen to while they're playing (or waiting for the game).

I'm thinking of synth heavy music like the soundtrack for Jodorowsky's Dune:

However I'm certainly not tied to that genre.

Eve Online has had hundreds (or thousands) of fan made songs, and I've seen collections of fan made music distributed for people to listen to while they play:

https://soundcloud.com/groups/eve-online (a small list of such music).

As for software and instruments, I have the following:

Ableton Suite 9 Serum Native Instruments Komplete 7 (been too lazy to upgrade) Moog Minitaur Korg Minilogue (I'm in love with this synth) Sylenth1 Guitars (Acoustic and Electric) etc. (I have tons of plugins and other instruments, I just rarely ever use them so I can't remember them off the top of my head)

So, might anyone be down to collaborate on some fanmade music?

I do believe there will be asteroids and the like within the universe, though I don't have any confirmation on that from the devs. However, it'd simply make more sense for something like this to exist in such a game.

MMORPGs that are P2P and fail, are usually WoW clones.

    Lord of the Rip-offs online.
    Wildcrap.
    DC Universe On-fail.
    Star Wars The Old Cashgrab..
    Lame of Conan.

And the list of WoW clones goes on and I only included the ones who are still running to this day.  Guess what they all had also in common. Guess what else they had behind them all these games. Corporate ties who wanted a WoW clone to milk them money of the MMOs.

    Guess what Dual Universe is.

The answer is unique. Where are you gonna go to get a procedural universe, with voxel  building AND flyable ships in an MMO setting? Good luck with Space Engineers. Have fun solo in No Man's Hype. Landmark...  *chuckles*, y-yeah, go to Landmark for anything but tourist simulation 2016.

If Dual is optimised and has attractions, it will be a new era for MMOs.

How would you propose the company who is making the game to make money in the long run on a buy to play plan, especially one as cheap as 10 dollars? That works if they intend on keeping the servers alive for only one month but it does not allow for upkeep, continued development, electricity and data costs...MMO's are not cheap to run.

The subscription model is the best model. It allows people to budget for their entertainment (15 bucks is the price of a single lunch), it allows for the game company to accurately project forecasts which help with continued development. Continued development helps games to stay fresh and fun.

I will gladly pay 20 dollars a month for a single shard game with the ability to make pretty much whatever you want and those creations have meaningful impact on the game. No other game has ever done what Dual is offering, none of them.

I would say, Each weapon has it's own ammo store say, 10 missiles for a missile launcher. And it automatically feeds in, but missile ammo has to be refilled mid-combat, so it doesn't stop firing. So we can have a reason to have crew dedicated to replacing ammo. More logistic thoughts too.

Lasers wouldn't need this though, and would only have to worry about overheating and range.

    @Shynras

I see your logic, but you still have to consider what NQ's position is on botting, because that's the real issue here. And I don't think they will be supporting botting. You will actively have to be on your ship for it to mine, LUA scripts won't make Skynet for you.

And the usual rule of thumb for game admins is to check for how long a player is online and how much interactivity they have, yes, they can see that.

I once went on a 36 hours spree of mining in WoW to clear my mind and I had a very funny conversation with a GM who thought I was a bot. Tehe conversation ended with the GM saying "women, am I right?" .

The point is, I see your arguement on inflation, but Halo381 has a more valid point. Why sell those ores right off? Stockpile, wait for the prices to skyrocket, create a vacuum in the market for that mineral and then take advantage, usually, after a war, as iron and all those things will be needed to rebuild a fleet.

And you got to clarify what you consider automated farming, cause botting is easily dealt with a ban, temporary or permanent.

Good sir, setting up such a joint of mining a whole by yourself, is not something that could be done with 1 huge ship for many many many reasons.

1 : Mass : Your ship extracts materials, those materials weigh down the ship. Your thrusters can barely support your ship as it is, fine tuned for that busines,, fuel efficiency being a part of that.

2 : Hazards : Piracy is a thing in this game. You'll need protection from them either in the form of turrets on your ship, that drain power from your ship, making your power ratio go down on the drill, or have players accompanying you as protection.

3 : Functionality : You can't have everything and the kitchen sink on a ship, ergo, your drills will have to be on a land-rover type of vehicle, transported there with another ship, therefore, the newer players will have the chance of operating automated mining rovers on the ground by driving them around, scanning for minerals and tapping on them for as deep as the drills can go.

4 : Claim of your mining site : You'll need a land base for your operations, as your drilling rovers will need fuel and a settlement for refuelling and possible repairs, will be needed.

5 : Having to script a drill, how it automatically harvests and all that, should be a high end reward, not gimped. It's what makes people look up to you.

Saying that, new players will have to progress to create their own ships and gear if they choose to, or roll with an organisation that can provide for the gameplay they want. That's cooperation and emergent gameplay in essence, as organisations will ensure a market for your ores, that you can always find someone to sell to. That's called internal market, it helps with inflation as you manage resources in your own nation. And, you'll have to realise that some worlds will be off limit by players. You simply can't mine anywhere and most probably, you'll be minding in space, on asteroids full of iron, rather than going through dirt and rubble to do so.

I firmly believe that newer players will have to earn the gear they want by the organsation they choose to roll with. That's emergent gameplay, the veterans creating "quests" and "quest rewards" and "reputation rewards" by keeping track of the new players and how they provide for the nation/empire/corporation they work for.

I hope I offered a comprhensive response good sir.

A dark, previously blank screen now has an image: a straight, horizontal blue line. "Greetings," A voice comes from behind, the source a cleverly-hidden speaker resting within the wall. As the voice spoke, the horizontal line wavered and jumped briefly, before returning to its previous state. "How can I help you today?"

To dispense with the pleasantries, I'm a roleplayer and sci-fi enthusiast. I discovered this awesome-looking not-quite-yet-a-game through a youtube video and thought I might check it out. So far, it looks like the community is very healthy and already building a world here with various organizations and such.

And before you ask about the title, I have only a little experience with lua. I know enough to usually understand what something will do, and I can probably frankenstein something out of separate components, but I doubt I'd be able to write something entirely on my own.

When being forced to decide what rough 'type' organization (nation, clan, cult, company etc.) to create I considered the same aspects. And honestly, unless you are or plan to become bigger I wouldn't automatically aim for a nation or government type of org because you have more to cover on paper.

While it seems lucrative to have that, I'm quite happy to have picked a Corporation or private entity on purpose because interaction with other groups becomes way easier (to me anyway). And if need be you can still "upgrade" to a nation.

I like to point out that the Helghan from the Killzone universe actually were a corp wit the same name and became a nation or empire so to speak. I don't see the same flexibility the other way around (gov to corp) while keeping it consistent.

Regardless of my preferences I wish all (or most, not you space terrorists) luck in their endeavors.

well one This is a niche game for people with niche interests.  It can not be all things to all people.

and two The game is designed to concentrate players together so they build cities... form communities... as such travel is restricted to encourage that.  While we can eventually expand out into an infinite universe I think the devs said something about them expecting it to take several months for us to advance and build enough to get off the planet we all start on.

This isn't a free flying... universe roaming experience.  If you're expecting that... you'll be disappointed... may I suggest No Man's Sky for that.

Indeed! The concept of "spell-casting and rolling the dice" by clicking on enemy ships has been done for over 10 years in EVE. Simply reusing those archaic mechanics takes away much of the novelty and appeal of the otherwise fantastic concept of DU.
