Setzar reacted to NQ-Nyzaltar in Pre-Beta wipe announcement!
    Dear Alpha testers,

The Beta launch is coming in just a few weeks and as you might expect it, so is the pre-Beta wipe! You will have 2 last test sessions before the wipe, during which we ask you to save all the Constructs you want to keep under the form of a Blueprint.

We know that this official announcement comes on short notice, but as you can imagine, the whole team is on a tight schedule to deliver the Beta at the end of the month and we’re trying to inform you as much in advance as possible with the time constraints.

The last test sessions before the wipe will occur will be:

From Thursday, August 6th at 14:00 UTC
To Monday, August 10th at 14:00 UTC
From Thursday, August 13th at 14:00 UTC
To Monday, August 17th at 14:00 UTC
Remember, everything will be wiped following this session, except the normal blueprints located in your Player Inventory (Nanopack), so be sure to keep those previously on your character, and not anywhere else (like in a container).

Last but not least, we also want to apologize for the inconvenience regarding the very short notice about the extended PvP zone and the issues that may have resulted from the situation. However, if you’re in a situation where some of your Constructs have been damaged before you can make an up-to-date blueprint of the said Constructs, please contact our Customer Support as soon as possible so you can get help from our team before the next test session. If you’re in such a situation, please read carefully the process described in the previous announcement published here.

    Hi everyone!

The new character model is an artistic re-imagining of the original design, and is one of many steps we’re taking to update the look and feel of the game. The goal of this redesign was not only to create something functional and realistic for interstellar travel, but also come up with something memorable, appealing, and instantly recognizable.

An idea that I would think would be great fun is to copy from Eve is the Decorations system.  It is a completely for-fun system whereas an Organization can bestow a medal of commendation to a player for whatever reason.  Medals are designed by the Org leaders with a name, design and description.  These commendations would show up on a player's information screen somehow, and could be removed by the player if they choose to.  These medals could be given by Legates of an Org for any reason they could come up with, with ideas like:

Org participation and/or Contribution Reaching a milestone (PvP kills, Constructs Produced, Hauling Jobs completed) Taking part in a major battle/event Making a huge mistake and laughing about it (crashing a huge spaceship, setting RDMS wrong and stuff getting stolen) Leaving the Org on good terms

Setzar reacted to NQ-Nyzaltar in Community Portal: Alpha 3 transitional state
    Hi everyone!

With the Alpha 3 deployment around the corner and the RDMS implementation, we had to make significant changes in the background by connecting organizations data available on the Community Portal to the organizations data that will be available in-game. As it is a "Work in Progress", the Community Portal will switch in "Read Only" mode for the time being, to limit the probability of technical issues.

During this transitional period, All management actions for the organizations will be done in-game.
You will also note that the number of legates per organizations isn't displayed anymore.
We are aware the situation isn't ideal, but it's a temporary and necessary step.

Update: Wednesday, January 22th, 16:15 UTC

    What's the current situation?
    To be clear:
    - Posting/Editing News have been deactivated on the Community Portal.
    - It will still be possible to post/edit News on the Community Portal through the in-game User Interface (assuming you have the proper rights to do such thing).
    - Posting/Editing News will remain in a minimal state for the time being (only simple text. HTML code for formating options and image insertion will came back later).
    - Posting/Editing News directly through the Community Portal should come back at a later stage.
    - The "Join Organization / Accept application" feature remains active.
    - The applications pending before the maintenance today should still be there after.
    - Features such promoting or demoting a member will now exclusively in-game (as the process may now involve other game mechanics).
    - Displaying the number of legates on the Organization Ranking page has been deactivated (as an intermediary step of the coming changes in the future).

    What's coming in the future?
(please keep in mind that the features described below are work in progress and might change before their release)

Organization Ranking by the number of Active Members.
As the Community Portal will evolve, we plan to display the number "Active Members" and the number "Honorary Members" for each organization in the future.
The Organization Ranking will be done by the number of Active Members in decreasing order.

What will be "Active Members" and "Honorary Members"?
"Honorary Members" accounts will be accounts that have joined an organization on the Community Portal but haven't access to the game.
"Active Members" accounts will be accounts that have joined an organization on the Community Portal and have access to the game.
Accounts joining an organization directly in-game will be automatically validated as "Active Members" in an organization.
Only "Active Members" will be eligible to legate status, as most organization management actions will be only possible in-game.

    Why planning this?
This is planned for two reasons:
    1) To give a better visibility for newcomers regarding the activity potential of each organization (which can impact the decision of joining one organization or another).
    2) To discourage unfair practices such as creating ghost accounts and making them join an org to inflate artificially its size (and get undeserved visibility).

Setzar reacted to NAMECAPS in Open letter to NQ
I wanted to thank Novaquark, I think the whole team has managed to create something truly unique. Challenging to describe to my friends, difficult to even categorize for all it's ambition. In an ever-growing sea of independant sandbox/survival games, anybody who gives it a fair shot will see it stands on it's own. Is it lacking in some areas compared to other titles? Sure, but it's still in development, with a lot of the foundation not even mixed up yet, much less cemented - and the plot they've chosen for the whole place is in a different world anyways.

That foundation is what I wanted to talk about. What I feel sets DU apart from every other title is it's ability to balance on the fine line between quality and quantity, and how every feature of the game focuses on player freedoms.

I see a lot of cynicism directed at NQ and cries for "more, more!" in the NDA forums, and while I'm guilty too of being  impatient or impulsive about stuff I'm passionate about, I want NQ to see this and know that even now, as a skeletal test-bed, the canvas they've woven for all of us to leave a brushstroke on (or tear in ) is monumental.

Anybody who plays games as a hobby has come across one or two games that featured some mechanic that enthralled them, a unique and unforgettable facet that outshines ANY competitors for the time. Half-Life 2's gravity gun and facial animations. Shadow of Colossus' climbing of monolithic, LIVE monsters. Saint's Row 3's "Streets of Rage" parody level where your comically busty and topless protagonist has suddenly become every 80s kid's bouncy, pixelated dream game, no cheat code or microtransaction necessary. Enthralling ideas made manifest by visionary producers and driven, talented developers.

For me, the ability to manually mold a shape, color it, fill it, hollow it, refine it, equip it, animate it, tune it, adapt it to different roles, change it up in an instant, make it mine and actually climb inside and pilot the damn thing, then choose my own adventures with friends in real time (and soon lay waste to anybody who thinks they're BETTA THAN US) is the blinding light that, while surely catering to some smaller, possibly niche tastes and demographics, is just so f#$*@n' brilliant that I haven't even finished Red Dead Redemption yet. Whack, right?

A lot of us know what it's like to be drawn to original, ambitious products only to be let down when they fail to live up to their own expectations. Doom 3, No Man's Sky, Duke Nukem Forever...that time your younger sister offered to make tacos for dinner but didn't say it'd be with tofu-based beef substitute seared in a hot pan of water instead of oil...DU is not one of those stinky fermented waterlogged tacos. It is a steaming hot, well-seasoned pile of deliciousness towering in a fresh, crisp shell, just missing all the veggies, sour cream and cheese on top. One might think that, "what's the point of eating it if it's only half-done? You can't compare the two."

Oh, but I can, because through a haze of carnival fumes I smell what NQ's cooking and it's drawn me by the nose like a cartoon. I dip a finger in that simmering sauce and lick it so homoerotically  clean that China censors me across the continent. Even incomplete, I know that mofo is tastier than anything else for miles - because of the time, care and refusal to compromise for lesser ingredients all bringing out the best in the foundations of that tac--er, product.

Do y'all want another Ark? I don't think so. There's a perfect example of quantity over quality. New content always available, but the infrastructure (virtual AND physical) is worse than games made a decade before it and the devs refuse to work on anything but new dinos and maps. It makes me appreciate the fact that while DU lacks any tameable wildlife or stuff trying to eat me whole, what it does have works well, and with lots more customization, ample room for personal touches and flair to set yourself apart with more than just clan numbers and force multipliers.

For all the involvement that NQ wants - and needs - from us, I feel sometimes that all our criticisms, while aiming to be constructive, can end up being so pervasive and numerous that it becomes a burden. I may just be another basement-dwelling dork with delusions of being a space cowboy, but from my perspective I can see that for every hour any backer or sponsor or grizzled, platinum-tiered Kickstarter donor has spent waiting for the next update, the next test, the next phase, Novaquark has spent three times as many hours and as much effort pouring their livelihoods into making imagination reality. For that, We thank you.

For all the freedoms you endeavor to give us, I think some of us can forget about them when voicing our thoughts & oppositions to what's been implemented (or is intended to be) and try to impose our own limitations on what should be. It seems like a raw deal to put real work, gruelling long hours into building such an open medium so many other people can freely create upon with such depth and jolly cooperation, while enduring endless opinion pieces you gotta wade through that only seem to impose barriers and boundaries or cry out for more features, more toys, more purpose when a player's found themselves floundering for something to do because somehow all of it still isn't enough.

I guess I just wanted to say that despite the long road ahead, you've already accomplished what no other studio of men and women have even conceived. My first exposure to DU, I just wasn't interested. Coming from primarily playing AAA competetive shooters, RPGs and the occasional racer or roguelike, minecraft in space didn't interest me, especially not a $60 alpha build with zero NPCs, zero guns and zero quests...but I DID think that building my own spaceship could be pretty cool, so I actually did a little research and what stuck out for me was the proof that the whole team was capable of putting their money where there mouth was, of aiming high AND hitting your marks with consistency. I didn't believe the single-shard system would work, much less in sync with everything else planned, but after nosing up and getting the starter craft over the treetops with some light modifications I felt accomplished, even more so after learning to land without busting my nose. Knowing that almost any of those blobs out on the horizon were exclusively player-built bases, and those shapes hovering miles over my head were their cruisers and carriers, and those billboards at the giant space banana were their outstretched hands, beckoning:

"Come build a new world with us"

It's been enthralling, and while I can't wait for what's next, I respect the path NQ is taking and the pace at which they lead. Here's to you, the greatest thing to come out of France since Camembert or Gojira (the band, not the beast)!

Setzar reacted to NQ-Nyzaltar in [Reminder] Line between legit PvP and unhealthy RL behavior
Since the beginning of the year, we have witnessed unhealthy behavior from several members in the Community.
As many are relatively new and some older members seem to lose focus of Novaquark's vision for Dual Universe, here is a strong reminder.

Dual Universe is a game where there will be wars, power struggles, conflicts, plots, spying, information warfare and betrayals. It's all fine... as long as it stays within the framework of the game.

We are aware that a fair amount of people have a hard time to differentiate in-game behavior and real life behavior. While someone can be infamous, merciless and twisted in-game, that doesn't give him/her the right to forget elementary good manners outside of the game. Following the concept "the end justifies the means" will never be a valid reason here.

Novaquark expects from each community member to:
    1) respect the EULA and forum/Official Discord code of conduct
    2) be respectful toward any other member or at least neutral toward the members you don't like outside of the game, whether they are newcomers or veterans.
(neutral means: no free provocation, no real life insults or real life threats, as already mentioned in forum and Discord chart)
    3) avoid using any real-life conflict, unhealthy real-life behavior or drama (made on purpose or not) as part of the game (because it's not) as this can escalate in very toxic and unnecessary situations.
    4) avoid using any underhanded real life "tricks" to gain an advantage in-game. This includes:
    - real life threats or real life harassment with anonymous accounts outside of the game (on Discord or any other online means).
    - doxxing, doxxing attempts, or any behavior like gathering real-life information that could lead to doxxing.
    - leaking publicly private discussions about real-life topics (especially when showing only carefully selected pieces with the deliberate intention of biasing the facts) without the agreement of all people involved. This also includes Novaquark’s investigations that haven’t been publicly announced and about which you may have been informed through a private channel/room or a private discussion.
    - making false accusations, creating NDA leaks or false NDA leaks to accuse someone else with the goal of making them punished or banned from the game.

As a company, we want to provide a fun and welcoming experience to our fans and can’t tolerate inappropriate real life behaviors that potentially ruin the gaming experience or worse, lead to real life consequences.

If the Novaquark staff gets enough evidence on any of those behaviors, the team may give any sanctions deemed appropriate without further notice.
If you see some community members having inappropriate behavior, please point them toward this forum thread.

    Best Regards,
    The Novaquark Team.

This is very true.  Locks only keep an honest man honest.  If a thief wants your stuff badly enough, he's going to find a way to get it.

Making yourself as small and unappealing target as possible goes a long way.  Then again, some folks enjoy the challenge of breaking security, not for gain, but for the thrill.

Setzar got a reaction from SonEasterZombie in Ensuring safe construct/design trades
I had two ideas about this, both of which I think could making purchasing/stealing ships relatively safe while keeping Lua codes secure to their creator:

    1. Definable "permissions".  Basically an option on a control unit where you tick which permissions you with to allow the unit to have and blocking others.  Think of the Google Play store where when you d/l an app, it tells you which permissions it wants to use.  With the control unit permissions, you'd get a checklist of things you want the core to be able to do, and if that function is blocked, then the Lua code can't perform the action.  Sure, this might render a construct unusable, so you have option 2...

    2. Ability to clear all Lua from a control unit.  Basically resets everything to default, and allows for editing.  You'd have to 'own' the construct to do this, not simply have permissions to it.  If you buy or steal a construct to gain ownership to it, but don't trust it to have malicious Lua code, then you can just wipe it, making it safe to use, but also protecting the original code.

If you want to buy a tricked-out ship with lots of Lua code, you'd better trust the seller...

    Big bad pirate here.

If I'm cruising around in my pirate ship looking for someone to pillage, I'm going to be using stealth myself to get as much information and as close as I can to my target.  If I can be 100% invisible, I'm going to have an easy time following someone from a trade hub back to their base when I call my fellow pirates to do piratey things.

If only ships can be detected, but bases hidden, I can still follow a ship back to its base, to which point I call my fellow pirates to do piratey things.

As Lethys suggested, detection mechanics based on game mechanics would be very interesting.  Learning how to fine tune your base to remain hidden means tradeoffs and planning, which is a good mechanic in my opinion.

All right, this topic is going to be locked.

Surprisingly all these "TheSlaxx" defenders are fresh new accounts.
Apparently some think it's okay to create accounts just to try to strongharm Novaquark's decision, even if this was already discussed and explained in private many times.
Making it public will NOT change Novaquark's decision. If someone opens another topic on TheSlaxx to try to change Novaquark's mind, expect your account to be banned permanently from the forum without further notice. We don't have time to waste on this topic anymore. This practice of coming back again and again on a decision made by Novaquark will only make the situation worse.

TheSlaxx hasn't been banned for the shady practices regarding the Organizations.
He has been banned for what he did after.
"He has changed now" will never be a valid argument to rehabilitate him.
If we make an exception for him, we will have to make exceptions for everyone else that has a toxic behavior.

Setzar reacted to NQ-Nyzaltar in Player Recruitment & Advertisement: dos and don'ts
    I) About Dual Universe (and/or a DU Organization) Advertisement

    (a) It's fine to advertise the game and/or your DU Organization(s) to players you already know or with whom you have already played with in other games without harassing them. If they aren't interested, do not insist.

    (b) It's absolutely not acceptable to enter other gaming communities with the only intent being to randomly advertise Dual Universe or your DU Organization to players you don't know. Being polite isn't enough. Participating in said group with the intention to legitimize your advertisement is not enough either. You won't fool many people with this method. While one player may be convinced to join your Organization, it will most likely antagonize significantly more players, making them hostile toward you and Dual Universe due to these cheap and inappropriate practices.

If you don't understand why this is wrong, just imagine players coming from 10 different game communities and invading your Discord, subReddit, or Steam group, falsely pretending to be interested in the game you’re playing while instead being there to make advertisements for the game he plays in your channels. Any person would quickly be tired of this behavior and ban them all, as well as form a negative image of the game that has been advertised. Please don’t do this.  Not only is this rude, this can be considered harassment in addition to brand damage, which could result in a ban from Dual Universe for such behavior.

    (c) While it didn’t seem clear for everyone so far (despite being in our EULA and in our forum chart here), here is a strong reminder: impersonating Novaquark staff is a serious offense. This will result in a permanent ban without further notice or discussion. There is also no limitation period for this offense (meaning: if we got proof of Novaquark staff impersonation several months or even years later, the sanction will still be applied).

    (d) While this has been some kind of grey area until now, there won’t be sanctions applied to involved Organizations for the past actions. However, from now on, Organizations that will benefit from the aforementioned bad practices could see their member list reset at Novaquark’s sole discretion. We wish to make it clear that there is nothing to gain from such advertisement and recruitment practices as well as inform other gaming communities that the Novaquark staff will not tolerate these methods of advertisement and recruitment.

II) About Gifting Practices as a Recruitment Incentive

Novaquark has not enforced any strict rules regarding gifting practices so you are free to gift DACs or Supporter Packs as you see fit. However, we don’t encourage use of this freedom as a recruitment incentive unless you are perfectly fine with the definition of "gifting" (giving something for free to someone else without expecting anything in return for this gift).

Before gifting a DAC or a Supporter Pack, you should carefully consider that a player could leave your Organization or simply never join it at all. In this situation, this will be your responsibility and we will not refund nor reverse the gift you made to another player. The Novaquark team will not step in to oblige the receiver to fulfill his part of the bargain either (if there was any).

    So choose and gift wisely.

If you have any further questions on the topic, please let us know.

    Best Regards,
    The Community team.

According to the WIki, during the Kickstarter AMA, this came up: https://dualuniverse.gamepedia.com/Archive:Kickstarter_AMA_Q%26A,_Part_One#Territory_Trespassing

Q: If you are flagged as not having permission to mine in my owned territory, can you still dig and mine, and just get flagged for breaking that, or does the game not let you mine or dig at all?
A: You will not be able to mine, but you will still be able to enter the territory (and be flagged for that), and possibly destroy materials by using weapons (if not in a safe zone) instead of mining equipment.

With the ability to destroy the ground with weapons, I can simply tunnel around defenses and find the 'weak spot'.  Or, if you have a large underground complex, you might build in the middle of a cavern with a protected structure in the middle.  Or you might try to be sneaky, and build an underground bunker and not deploy a TCU so no one notices you are there.  I guess it's also worth linking another Q&A from that AMA about how deep you can go:

    https://dualuniverse.gamepedia.com/Archive:Kickstarter_AMA_Q%26A,_Part_One#Planet_Depth

Is there a limit to how deep you can dig? To put this question into better context, I would imaging that you would want to hide your possessions from other players. I am wondering about what are the limits of editing the environment?
There are no technical limit to how deep you could dig, but we will put some limits for gameplay reasons. The exact depth is not set yet, but below something like a few kilometers, you will encounter lava, which will help making the job of deep mining prospection more dangerous (like in Minecraft, actually). We may have a few small moons that do not have this restriction. And, yes, hiding your stuff underground will be a possibility. But we are looking at ways to make this a bit more difficult, so there is a tradeoff, for example adding the need for special gears to breathe in the depth, requiring costly cartridges to operate, etc.

I walked into Eve's sandbox three years ago with a huge PvE mindset.  "Oh, a MMO SciFi Sandbox spaceship game, let me give that a try."  I stayed in Hi-Sec, ran missions, went on low-sec roams with my corp, but no PvP focus.  Then my corp got Wardecced, and i got caught in my FIRST CRUISER ship and LOST IT.  I was disgusted and immediately logged off and didn't log back in for 3-4 days.  I was devastated that someone would just kill me for no reason... but I also got a huge adrenaline rush from it.  That incident was probably what set me down the PvP path.

In Eve, and in DU, when your ship goes BOOM, it doesn't get magically replaced.  There is real in-game loss of assets.  In WoW, and most other MMOs, you die and you just respawn exactly as you were, or minimal penalties.  If it's not something you've experienced before, the loss will probably hit you RIGHT IN THE FEELS.  If, and only if, you can realize that it isn't griefing/trolling/harassing just to shoot at other players, but rather a person vs another person fighting within game-established rules and mechanics that gives you that rush of adrenaline, you might choose to compete rather than play a victim.

Learn the game's mechanics.  Learn the meta-game.  Don't complain about being ganked (gankers love tears), but instead learn how not to get ganked.  You'll be playing the game the way NQ designed it, not how you want it to be.

Or don't.  I'll be just as happy to kill you and take your stuff.
