I think you're right there. The biggest problem of most new Suscribtion games failing may also be because the game does not bring much that stands out from non F2P varriants.Looking at Most MMORPG its nothing new anymore. There are many games about "Kill some monster by clicking at buttons on the screen"
Packaging the same stuff differently won't work for long against other Pay versions, that are better for the User.

On a game like DU where the player Shapes the the Politics, the market, the industrie, in an constructiv and possibly a destructive way to, that may give if not many (and it my be many i don't know about that) but at least a core Player base a good reason to play the game no matter what pay System there is.
There is no other game that gives these possibilitys to a player.

And a Core Base of players is all a Subscription Model needs to Survive.

I agree. atm maybe only cinderfall will have a city built by its member orgs

edit: as I hit enter I realized that might not be possible as at the moment there are 2 government style orgs in the TU and the DUA...might be forgetting one but meh not my job to keep track XD

It's all right, your concerns are valid.

The conditions of the failing rate of Subscription based games are more to do with market trends and business decisions by companies themselves.
They sink a ton of money into game development and when various behind the scenes factors are not satisfied with the performance of the product, they pull the plug and demand MORE MONEY!

Dual universe and Novaquark are specifically avoiding the back room drama, for DU at least, put on by big publishers and stocks bonds and investors, because they don't want to be pressured legally into switching the games payment method.

This way JC Baillie gets to judge whether or not Dual Universe is successful or not. He might be pleased with 50,000-100,000 active subscribers and consider the project a good long term investment, a big publisher would laugh at that and shut down the servers.

Another special factor for Dual Universe is the single shard technology, we dont have to worry about Server population collapse and mergers, which always upset a large number of people. In Dual you dont have to fear a low pop server merge and losing your character name, or guild. It lives on, forver as long as JC wills it and JC loves robotics and he loves Novaquark, he hasnt spent half a decade invested on this to turn around and say in his french accent "Yes we tried but we dont care anymore, hell with it."

Also, being a social pvp sandbox, the generation of content is different than in a regular rollercoaster theme park. In Dual you explore the world, you build your character from the many possible options. You find people interested in things that you are also interested in.
A game like wild star, you get into the cart and you ride along the tracks the developers make out for you. They tell you what factions you can be in, what weapons you use, what race you can be or cant be. Everything is a pre defined option.

This game, this game specifically, has potential to break free from the market depression games have experienced.

As far as the people that have negative experience, yes it is true, but you cannot capture every fish in the sea no matter how big a net you cast.

Speaking for myself only i have already payed for and played other games that are just too similar to Wildstar.  There is nothing new or interesting there for me to want to buy.

On the other hand Dual Universe i would like to throw money at like a high class stripper.

I think if the game works any profit model CAN work.  So assuming this game is going to work, the question is what profit model is the best for the game.

edit:  And i agree 100% with the current plan.

The_War_Doctor reacted to Kongou in Storage containers and cargo
I think perhaps he was going more for, you drive up close and then it magic beams over to the other entities cargo containers. not necessarily long distance market transfers.

I'm really down for this idea, even if the devs dont do it, it follows the basic principles i deal with every day.

Bring a loaded cargo container to a place, set it down, pick up an empty cargo container next to it.

If you ran a company in the game that bought a ton of iron, you could contract a logistics company. have them bring their Logistics company cargo containers to your base and set it down in a specific spot, automate a crane to move it to a transfer terminal.
that first driver will have to leave empty with no container, but the company undoubtedly has more somewhere he can go get.
when the next guy comes to bring a container, the first cargo pod """should""" be waiting empty, all he has to to is drop it where the iron company wants, and take his empty pod away.

The contracts are all handled top level, all that driver has to do is worry about getting that raw iron or whatever to the landing pad.

You are also correct, the tech will come and not everyone will share its secrets. Some of it will be defunct and crash into the landing pads. but eventually someone will get one that works well and itll be worth a lot.

They've already stated about the need to physically travel to another market if you buy something remotely to go have to pick it up, so I'm not sure how the beaming mechanic would apply in that case. It seems like we're going to have to go carry our cargo from the markets we purchase things from, and needing to load that cargo into containers to move it further seems like the natural progression.

Also, they have models for containers, so why wouldn't they be put to use?

Also, there is a lot of talk about scripting, but who is going to write all of that? If you (not you specifically, just whoever is reading this) wrote it all, would you give it away for free?

I think if I wrote automation for a cargo bay, I wouldn't give it away in any form, I'd take my development time into account when charging people loading/unloading fees.

That was probably off topic a bit, not an attack, just an observation I randomly had.

The_War_Doctor reacted to NQ-Nyzaltar in Communauté de joueurs en langue française.
    Hi everyone,
I'm going to make this reply both in English and in French to avoid any misunderstanding.

    -----------------------

    Cordialement,
    Nyzaltar.

    -----------------------

Hello Citoyen and welcome on the official Dual Universe forum.

It's probably unclear for new comers, but as the forum - for the time being - exclusively in English, there is an implicit rule about trying to post topics in English, to be polite towards others. On the forum, there are people for which the mother tongue is Spanish, German, Polish, Russian or French and they all make some efforts to post in English, even if they are not comfortable by doing so. We can totally understand that some are not fluent in English but in that case, there is still the possibility to translate the text in English by Google Translate (even if the result won't be perfect).

From the beginning we have encouraged that all the community members speak with each others, regardless of their country. That's why when someone come on the forum to say "I'm posting a topic just to talk to those who speak the same language as me", it's understandable that it could be seen by other members as unfriendly and impolite. As others have made efforts before you, we can't favorize anyone.

There will probably be dedicated forum sections for each language mentioned above in the future. But as the game will be exclusively in English for the Official Release (game localization in other languages should come after the official release), we prefer, at least for the time being, keep the forum according to the game regarding the spoken languages.

We hope you will understand our position.

    Best regards,
    Nyzaltar.

I think that all sorts of things will be prone to smuggling, particularly when a group decides to have a monopoly on a certain good in a given territory.

If a particular group wants to control all imports and exports of a given resource, regardless of if it is stat boosters or raw materials, they might otherwise confiscate it from people if they find it in their cargo. Wars might be fought over territory for the right to distribute, not just acquire, a given commodity, and it's not so far fetched considering how often it has happened in the real world over all sorts of things.

You can imagine a black market opening up for all sorts of things, if it means that you are hiding trades from the owners of a given territory over something they would frown upon.

I might want to have new players come to my planet, and in return I'm hoping that they will buy from my markets and make me some money. However someone shows up selling all sorts of resources, somewhat negating my investment in paying for a probe to go find that planet in the first place. In response I issue an import ban on certain items, in order to guarantee that I'm making profits from my local production efforts.

That situation is going to be rarer than the one JC was talking about in this latest interview which I agree with, since I also foresee smuggling involving trade blockades over planets during wars. In that case, you might find yourself netting quite a profit smuggling everything you can think of in and out of an active warzone.

On the topic of Narcotics... Those kinds of things might play into a skill tree for people who want to craft items with plants, chemicals, etc. Being able to make items that, while aren't necessary, give bonuses for a short period of time to players.

One can imagine being able to craft an implant that increases your skill training speed, similar to how implants in Eve Online work. They might be temporary items that only last for a few days, unless you have the skills to craft higher level or more efficient ones.

Or for items with negative effects, I'm thinking of a booster that gives you a bonus to a given stat, but while having its own negatives for the user, also has the potential to cause negative effects for the people around you. Something that you would want to apply to your character for the bonus, but the authorities on a station might have some obvious issues with and would want to keep you or anyone else from using or having those items onboard.

Something that negatively affects (not necessarily physically harms, but perhaps a stat loss?) people around them I think should be detectable by the people around them, or perhaps the mystery is part of the fun in the idea.

I'm just throwing out ideas here, none of them have to be taken too seriously.

so I was thinking about this in one of the organization discords today. What is everyone thoughts on colors in the game. Are we going to just have a color wheel where we can change the color of different elements to make buildings, ships, and other constructs the color we want. or are we going to have to actually go out and find dyes and such to make actual paint.

    thoughts?

idk if this has been mentioned....  I'v not seen it. I'v also don't believe any videos have shown anything on this. probably seems like a silly thought. but figured it could be discussed

NQ have their plans for generating cash flow soon, with the idea of a crowdfunded project up in the air which would launch early to mid 2017. While I am sure they, and the DU community, are appreciative of your willingness to donate now, I'd hold on to that wallet for a little while longer while we wait to see what NQ rolls out.

What, exactly, is this post contributing to the forum, community, and game?

Other than probably starting a flame war, inviting a lot of hate, etc. I'm not here to breach said hate and start a flame war. My contribution to this topic would be my advice. I have not actually seen any one person who has spammed single worded responses to up their post count. I myself have spent a few hours on the forum any day that I have time for it to up my post count, by contributing. I probably have a few posts that are no more than a few words, however, they are perfectly fine to be there. There is no rule against laughing at a joke and expressing yourself with a post made up of a "ha ha" and a "xD". Sure, everyone is supposed to contribute in one way or another, however, it is still within the rules.

While I sound like an ass, you do have a point. However, that point is better placed as a comment, and not as an entire thread.

Hmm, maybe a sorta "hacking" specialty for people to hide their names, but the faciaal reconstruction should be a medical thing. Think of people running a "witness protection" service. You don't have to create a new account or a new character. You only need to change your name and appearence. A big org's leader should not do that, cause that would collapse the organisation itself, due to him not being recognisable as the leader at that point due to legal reasons. Possibly, the DNA/Player ID could be used by people with a "Tracking" skill to find you down, so your DNA should be a form of ID many orgs would need for you to enter their higher echelon. If you were to betray them, nothing would save you by Bounty Hunters, with, PERHAPS, a very costly material wise Gene Treatment solution to change the Character's DNA/ID on the server. That would give players incentive to specialise into being medics with a chance of high profit on running such services.
