Kurock reacted to Devious_T in 'Writer's Guild' - Writing/Reading Group
    Hey all,

Some of you may recognise me from the ongoing Novawrimo contest, but if not then let me introduce myself.

"I'm a guy who likes to write! Hiii!"

But anyway, weirdness aside, I've just set up an Org called 'Writer's Guild' and would like to invite anyone who is interested in continuing to write some fan-fiction for Dual, or fiction in any form, to take a look.

I'm not an amazing writer, but I've been doing it for a while, so I would like to offer my help towards any that want it, and encourage others to do the same. What I hope for is a close-knit group of people sharing and writing and reading each others work, providing good feedback, and growing as writers and individuals.

Anyway, we'll see how it goes.

    Thanks for your time,

    DT

Kurock got a reaction from Terawa in RDMS: Invisible tags
Rights and Duties Management System (RDMS) will be one of the very powerful customization systems in DU. Read the DevBlog here if you have not already. Effectively tags can be used to give access to assets etc etc. I assume that in the current RDMS system, a player will know what tags he/she has.  Effectively these are like keys to a spaceship or passcard for a door.

The suggestion of this topic is that a tag can be placed on a person without their knowledge. These invisible tags would not be able have duties connected to them because this could lead to a player losing money without knowing about it.

The uses for this are also quite broad.  For example: it could be used to not only tag intruders but to keep track of the intruder long after they have left.  This has an additional effect that invaders would need a hacker to look at their hidden tags and clean out any unwanted ones.

What would you use invisible tags for?

Hi, nice to meet you. The game looks awesome indeed.

You could do couple of things to start with, if you haven't already. Dual Universe will be based much on organizations so you could join one here. Alternatively you could create your own organization if that suits you. You can "pre order" the game here with some pretty cool bonuses + alpha/beta access. By doing this you would also back the games development at the same time and get your name in the credits as a early backer.

Hope this helps. BTW I'm in the Aether.

Hi there! I came across Dual Universe a couple days ago from a youtube vid a friend linked me.

It looks so cool! Anything I should know about the game?

    i'll check you all later!

Before Dual Universe I spent countless hours scouring the internet looking for -that- game. I think many other people know exactly what I'm talking about. -The- game that would tie you down and keep you immersed for hours, where you could live in a virtual world and be part of something bigger, where you could build your dreams and be part of a whole other universe.

I was feeling rather down, depressed or sad take your pick, in the months before I learned about DU from E3. I was feeling kind of burnt out about things happening in projects I was involved in (I was a dev on Bitcoin Classic) and just generally was very mopey. I wasn't sure what else was going to come along that would suck me in and make me feel like I could contribute in any meaningful way.

When I discovered DU I was ecstatic, and I don't think there was a grain of pessimism inside of me. As soon as I saw the trailer, as I'm sure others can attest to, I knew exactly what it meant for gaming as a whole (especially sandbox gaming) and I just knew what it was NovaQuark was attempting to create.

I don't think I've been as happy in a long time, being part of DU Explorers, flying out to PAX to meet JC at the NQ booth, getting to be involved in various happenings here and there, everything Dual Universe has been a very positive experience in my life this year.

Lately, I've been feeling down again. I don't know if it's because of the lack of interest in getting people to be on DU Explorers for another episode (we haven't had one in 3 weeks...) or if it's seasonal or something else entirely. I couldn't even bring myself to write anything for NovaWrimo with all the back and forth banter and arguments between different organizations. I'm just exhausted.

I'm sure things will turn around here after the new year. Although, unless I can get another episode of DU Explorers together soon, I think I'm going to be taking a break from DU for a few weeks.

Regardless of all of that, which are purely my own problems, I think the main purpose of this was for me to say thank you to NovaQuark and Happy Holidays to everyone there for everything that you're doing for us.

Even in these early stages of development, what you're doing has had a special impact on hundreds if not thousands of people. I don't think anyone here will disagree that you're doing something that has changed our lives forever.

Between all the new friends we've all made, and all of the excitement we've been able to be a part of (Kickstarter was a nerve-wracking blast), we've certainly come a long way and it feels like we're not that far away from actually being able to interact with each other in-game.

    Thank you NovaQuark.

Hi, first of all correct me if this thread has already been opened somewhere else. If not, well one thing came to mind. What if there could be some in game activities, such as Chess, Texas Hold'em and 8 Ball Pool in the game world. They could be pre-defined models you could purchase or craft in the game. This would bring more reasons to come to play. I don't know if you guys have heard of a game called Puzzle Pirates. If not well it's pretty much what the name suggests: Being a pirate and sailing while doing various puzzles etc. anyway in that game I think this was implemented brilliantly. If I wanted a break from sailing and pillaging then I could just go to the nearest tavern and play some game like Texas Hold'em among few others and relax, completely away from the sailing stuff.

This would also bring meaning to some of the buildings in a city or a colony. For example there could be a community hall, where players could gather between their travels, sit down and play together. Some variety to the game + at least something as a heritage from planet earth.

Well this is just one idea among others and could obviously be implemented later as there are 1000 more important things right now, but anyway.

I was all in at first for skill loss when you die but thinking of it again with eve in my mind it just doesn't work out well. The only progression you make in DU is skilltime since there is no level. Taking that away from players is just the easy way out to prevent players fRom doing something stupid.

A complete reset is just the worst option and completely useless. I will break your idea with just one single statement: I will make alts and just troll people by killing them. They lose everything and the alt nothing. Just an utterly bad idea

Hey all, I hope you enjoy this piece I've written for the contest.

I didn't have much time with exams going on at the moment so its around 6,000 words long, but I got most of what I wanted in there.

Also, I've created quite a few phrases and terms so if people are confused about any of those I'm happy to make a glossary, but most should be pretty self-explanatory from the context.

Thanks for taking a look and enjoy!

As much as we would like to put some people away, I don't think it will be viable as long as there is a suicide option.

Without a suicide button, imprisoning someone would then only really work in a safe zone where they can't break the walls to get out.

Or you could convince your 'prisoners' to come willingly.

A blue marble floats in the blackness of space. The beauty of the surrounding clouds of space dust and debris swirl ever so greatly in the great backdrop of the milky way galaxy. 10,000 years ago we called this place, this solar system our home. But now...

A great wall of flame and radiation passes through the beautiful marble ripping the planet to shreds and sending rock and chunks of Earth barreling through the void in the direction the solar explosion sends it. The great flame consumed Sol, our sun. Then continued to devour every planet in the solar system till it had wiped out every living thing possible.

Destroyed, our home is. We set out on the journey, billions of us, to find a new planet. To find a new home where we could restart and hopefully flourish and prosper for another Trillion years. Aboard the Arkship, I slept silently. Forever dreaming of the millions of faces i left behind in the chaos of launch day. The riots, the bloodshed, the *Fear*. Everyone knew that if they couldn't somehow board any of the arkships, they would be doomed to die a gruesome death. I was lucky, I was deemed as a "eligible passenger", or so they called it. I was rushed aboard and sent to a processing deck. They took my luggage, my clothes, everything i had on me. They tattoo'd a number on my arm which read "C-2695". I guess that was their way of making sure that no stowaways boarded the arkship in a attempt to leave the planet and escape doom. I was confused and scared, they told me I would sleep for a very long time but they never told me how long....I left behind my family, friends, my love. I am alone now, as I lay into this cryo-pod, the glass door folding over my head and shutting with a hiss. I see male and female scientists scurrying about in white lab-coats as they guide all the other soon-to-be-human-icicles to their pods.

"Hello", said a female voice through speakers in my pod. "I am Aphelia, the new AI system aboard the current Arkship.", the voice finished.
    "uhm...Hey?". I said confused.
"Greetings passenger C-2695", she said in a monotone voice as she read my number. "Per request by the scientists and leading experts of this arkship I require your full name.", she kindly requested.
"D-", I paused before i finished my sentence. The old me dies today, left behind on Earth. When I awake, however long that is, I will be a new person on a new world.
    "Jortian....Jortian Selel", I said with a smile.
There was a beep and then the voice came back through again.
"Thank you Jortian.". the voice said kindly. "Now you are gonna feel a little sting". warned Aphelia.
I had no time to react as something sharp forced its way into my head. I could barely feel it but it was an odd sensation and it caught me off guard.
"Please relax while we connect your brain to the neural pod network.", requested Aphelia.
A moment later she spoke again. "Probing memories...."
"Wait wha- AHHH!", I screamed as I saw my life literally flash in front of my eyes at near infinite speed. "A little warning next time? Please?", I groaned.
"Apologies Jortian, now that I have access to your higher brain function. Is there anything you would request of me before we begin?", she asked.
I sat there and thought for a second. Then it came to me...
"Aphelia...is there anyway you could preserve my memory of my husband?", the words bounced off my trembling lips.
"Of course, I am seeing...Michael.", her voice soothed.
"yes...", I said with a choked up sob. "Make sure to preserve it...", I requested trying to hold back my tears.
"Of course Jortian. Will that be all?", Aphelia said as the pod began to activate and whirr to life.
"yes Aphelia, that will be all."
"Here are some comforting words to help you slip into your cold slumber.", said Aphelia as her voice began to warp and twist into a male voice. A familiar male voice....Michaels voice.
"Begin message playback.", the voice said roboticly.
"Hey babe...I'm glad you got accepted.", he said with a short sniffle. "Doctors said I wouldn't help to generate a good gene pool...whatever that means." he began to choke up. "I'm sorry i lied to you, but if i told you the truth you would of never gone....you need to live...you need to survive...", he continued speaking as the air within the pod began to grow cold. "You are the future of the human race now...forget about me....forget about everyone else.", Michael chuckled. "You always told me how you wanted to goto space...now you get to...and for a good cause.". he began to cry. "Just don't forget one thing...", The window began to fade away into darkness and the voice grew fainter and fainter. "I do and always will....".

A single tear rolled down my face

"Love you", said the voice, echoing in my mind as I slipped into eternal slumber.

    ----First Paragraph Snippet----

Space.  Contrary to popular belief back on Earth, stars do not move as you travel through space. Well they do, but the changes are imperceptible to the naked eye. And they don’t twinkle. Everyone I cared about I left back on Earth. Now Earth is destroyed, by some nova star and them along with it. Staring out into the void echos the void inside me. It is the loneliest I have ever felt. And then a space whale drifts by.   --------------------------------------

Edit: No doc changes, just here to say UMF remains in the story and won't be changed Edit: File was 0kb for some reason.  Re-uploaded for everyones enjoyment.
