The response from NQ seems that they really are thinking long and hard about things. Seems like this is going to be awesome. I like it.

I am not against pay to play. However, I think for newcomers, a period of grace should be involved to see if they actually want to play.
Let me explain. Recently, I bought Evochron Legacy. The game was only $24. But the demo period was 90 hours.THe tutorial lasted at least 3 and a half hours. So ample game time of 90 hours to make your mind up. And this from a one man team. Someone who actually cared enough for you to see what he had developed.
I bought the game straight after the tutorial because it had me hooked. My hopes for DU are the same. That it will hook us all by the end of the demo if not before.
However, we are slightly ahead of the curve, and getting straight info from the devs that I suspect that it is a foregone conclusion :D

I have just joined the forum to get a grip on things. Been playing ED for over a year now. Have triple elite and don't care about the game any more.
I am interested to see how this develops as I look for new entertainment. Eve has no interest for me, and although I backed Star Citizen, I am starting to think that each time Derek Smart throws a lawsuit at them it could be the last.
 
So, my fingers are crossed for this.

I understand what you mean. Even my 2 year old lappy is starting to get hot. But I have a dual xeon desktop so it runs it without skipping a beat.

I like that idea very much, let players set up market units and spaces for sale/rent and as long as no player uses these slots they could be rented by more or less random npc shops.

I'm glad that space is available for Alpha.

I hope I don't sound pretentious saying this but naturally, this is an opinion shared by most, if not all, of us forum members. We certainly would not ask anything in return, but if Novaquark did decide to do a little something for backers and testers, I'm sure most would not blatantly refuse to accept it either. I for one always live for the cosmetics and such in-game, and purty outfits are always great. 
 
But the point remains, yes, most of us are perfectly happy to help make DU the best it can be.

I've been playing a lot of Elite myself lately, alongside some XCOM 2.

Alpha testers just want to make the game better (or, at least, they should).
 
So, in my opinion, best rewards would be to :
Listen to them and give them the tools and opportunities to make positive and negative critics. Maybe let them chose some of the universe names like planets, items, or maybe become backstory characters ? I'm sure some of us would love to write our own stories . Also, quick idea: it may be a good idea to organize some open discussions with game designers over TS/mumble/Skype. Looking at the number of alpha testers, it is still manageable.
