I just made a new desk for my computer, but i measured wrong and it can't fit up the stairs... Oh well, I guess it can just go in the Dining room... I cut this tree down in my front yard, and because it looked so cool, i learned how to make stuff!

Concidering that a lot of military assets will be created manually, it could lead to all out war being the last option. After negotiations, threats and sanctions.

But who knows, most of us like to see stuff blow up on occasion.

No need to excuse yourself. It was a fun read and sums up a lot of my own thoughts.

    "Code is taking arrr jawbs!"

I suppose I'm personally used to "manual mining", given that my last really in-depth or primary time I spent with my faction was in Minecraft Beta, although newer endeavors also only offered mining by hand ("7 Days 2 Die" for example). Whether you only know this or saw better, easier methods in other games, I think it might not be a bad choice because it puts emphasis on manual labour and thus people.

You might actually have to hire miners temporarily or permanently. (Large) Economic power in that branch might not lie at the folks who have the best "code" or automation, but those with high manpower (in addition to how they manage supplies and so on of course). And it gives new players not just a chance in general to compete but job opportunities in all these player nations, corporations, groups, organizations. While likely many can't get around mining at the start to get some basic resources to move on from there, if you don't necessarily need ores yourself as new or somewhat established player, you can mine for someone else and get monetary compensation, or maybe even totally different compensation? Imagine working for someone for other favors or material goods.

    A lot is possible.

I, personally, don't mind manual mining as I usually did that before in comparable games. I just mostly wonder about the (lack of?) mining ships or rigs or equipment for ships. Might as well refrain from trying to build dedicated mining ships and bring the big cargo freighter to a belt or so right away if you have to get outside to mine the rocks anyway.

    ----------------

Also, for those who consider it a (necessary but boring) grind: Think of it this way. Daily, toilets are scrubbed somewhere, goods for consumption are made (don't think of a factory now, maybe more like some store where someone prepares sandwhiches daily), hairs are cut, etc. If you just look at it from a superficial view, it might seem monotonous a lot. Often, it can be annoying.

But it's necessary in the end, if you integrate that particular task into a bigger picture. We sit in heated homes and enjoy various goods today, right now, because someone at one point mined some sh*t somewhere, and someone else moved it around, and someone else in turn processed or refined it, integrated this into goods or made goods out of it in the first place, etc. Rinse and repeat.

While it can be monotonous, if I look at the larger picture it suddenly becomes very exciting or at least somewhat interesting. You never know where that particular rock you mined (or processed) might end up. Even if you mine for some internal use within a larger player faction only, you never know. In other words, consider it like a contribution to (this digital) society that made it possible in the first place. Kind of like the foundation.

Build a foundation. Be a miner. Join today.

Oh, sorry, turned into ad-mode for a second! Nevermind!

    Frigging Code...... *grumble*

Too true, in my play hours there was this one guy who always showed up with a fleet of alts. Took the fun out of it.

I mostly stuck to wormholes. That was more exciting to me.

    That's the plan though.

    Deal with it.

Also, since you have zero clue of this - and its obvious - AI needs its own server (since NPCs are client instances operated by the server). Tell me, how much will the AWS hosting costs skyrocket for NQ, if they were to add PVE, with scripts and how much would it ruin their developement crunch if they were to add pointless PVE, cause YOU are lazy and don't want to mine?

DU is not a theme park, they never advertised as a Theme Park. It's a Sandbox. They never said the will add - or want - PVE with dungeons and loot bags.

Plus, DU if it had PVE, it would be like EVE - people showing up when "epic snowflakes" do a high end boss, murder the snowflakes, kill the boss, get the loot and post the kill mail humiliating the Carebears for being dumb.

The only PVE they should add ,is for hunting and skinning for making cool clothes and stuff. Link PVE with the actual economy, and making PVE a profession, not "kill 100000000000 wolves so the Space Princess can give you the Sword of Carebearius".

You want PVE to get materials for your ship? Might as well tell them "make wolves drop money". That's the level of disconnect you have with economics.

As lethys said, you will have to wait until NQ opens the store again.

At that point you will be able to purchase a package that will allow you to test the game on certain days.

However, no option will enable you to play immediately. You wil need some patience until you are added to the next wave of testers. So you have plenty of time deciding if you want to test this game.

Fair enough but if you can't do something really well, why do it at all?

Purely from a design perspective its a waste on resources trying to compete on an established market if your product doesn't stand out above the competition.

With the current features they stand above the current niche.

I don't think a pve public event is something that will ever make it into DU.
Next to the obvious reasons for not having them I think a big reason against them is persistence.

A scripted repeating event goes against the illusion of a persistent universe. And I do think NQ tries it's best to create said illusion for us.

It's also about quality. NQ has said a couple of times they only want to introduce AAA features. They don't want to compete with games and features that have made pve events as their selling point. Like GW2, Destiny 2 etc etc.

Ach, it's only a popularity contest.
If this poll happened after the release of Crowfall or Star Citizen some other mass appeal project would take the win.

At most its a hype meter.

I'm still convinced DU will sell itself as more people can experience it for themselves. There is literally nothing like it being developed and it looks like NQ will pull it of.

Seeing is believing and all that jazz.

Don't despair, despite some heated words now and then pretty much everyone here wants the same thing.

Creating a good new player experience is on the minds of many people on this forum. And probably NQ as well.

We have a few extreme poles represented as any game forum, somewhere down the road they will meet in the middle. By choice or by force.

    Yup, that's what I'm thinking.
And I'm fairly certain that it will happen in game. In EVE there is too much text for a lot of players. But from what I have seen about DU so far I think that won't be the case with DU

Unfortunately there is no tutorial that can teach a person to achieve a goal with social skills. Although I don't think the average theme park player will come to DU. (not saying all theme park players lack social skills)

Yet, I heard J.C. mention that they hope to attract non MMO players. So who knows maybe we get a fresh generation that lack the years of bad habits.

I already Made my statement where I write about what I think is wrong in eve and with perception of it.
Partly players fault (not the griefers but the ppl who want instant gratification), partly eve itself.

Your idea isn't really yours tbh as NQ already plans for that: protection bubbles or shield domes. You learn the first steps in the arkzone and then you can move on and build such defenses (which have 48h invulnerability Timer btw) to protect your stuff.

But that doesn't change the fact that people will still complain and leave the game because they get killed sometimes. As No tutorial can show you what Du is really about (all the Meta, other Not so obviously defensive mechanics, ship building, Base building, ...).
And that's basically what i posted before:
    - people need good Tutorials to get to know Basic Game mechanics and how to defend them (shield domes for example)
    - but people also need guidance from others to get to know the deeper mechanics and the meta which no tutorial can describe

If newbros just venture outside because they have a wrong impression of Du and then get killed, I can already foresee all the salt.
And again: to me it's Not so much nqs job to bring players to the right mindset but ours as players. Teach them. Show them. Talk to them. They need guidance from us otherwise they'll leave and be salty about Du too

I think you might be underestimating him. Don't let your 'hatred' of those who disagree stop you from thinking straight. Attacks against character are only useful if you want to undermine their ability to reason (and therefore bait them into doing what you want them to do). And attacking Twerk's character means you lose, since it is usually a last resort (it is also what he wants you to do).

Be rational, play devil's advocate, learn when to back down (I go by the phrase "If someone disagrees, check again to see if you are right").

You can create SVG graphics with Lua and according to the Lua Tutorial you can import pictures as well. So I think it might be a good project to create a "DU-University" in game. Which would include advanced topics. Depending on the Lua scripting you might be able to do "tests" in game.

The LUA scripts on screen for bespoke player-made tutorials? That might be stunning. A lot like player made "quests" but designed to teach and learn the basics effectively in more dimensions of gameplay.

I really do think a stunning introduction to new players on Alioth will be worth it's weight in gold.

Yea.. I would file that in the not very probable pile.

In general I would think it would be good for everyone to try to be as welcoming as possible to new players. Which is very easy on the forum and beyond but impossible in game. Next to the obvious new player experience troubles EVE has, one of its biggest issues is being seen as "that game flooded by psychos". That is an issue where both the community and CCP are responsible. Not to mention that EVE is bloated as hell, a double edged sword in my opinion.

And in game, you can't exactly flag new players in game as being new. That would be a literall bulls eye to some players.
Good and easy to understand tutorials are key but most of the game can't be explained in a tutorial. I personally see a lot of potential in player run initiatives to welcome fresh blood. In game and out of game.

As always I feel you can't single out one or two issues with EVE and translate that to DU.

Funny thing is, both sides need each other. DU as a game can't work without people creating things and people destroying things.

I'm pretty carebear by most standards but if I wanted a game to just build silly stuff I'd play minecraft.

My advice, relax it's just a game. Let's see how the game actually plays before burning down the roof.

I don't think a sandbox always needs FFA PvP to be sandbox, but that's a whole other debate.

But in this case for Dual Universe, I don't think you can use bubble wrap mechanics.

I suppose it's a bit like real life, you can't opt out of the laws of physics you don't like. It's the same for Dual Universe in my opinion, one universe with consistent rules. The safezone is already a lot more than we usually get in these type of games.

Personal soapbox moment, it's silly to want a game to be perfectly tailored to your exact wishes. Sometimes mechanics are there to provide a better game, not just to annoy you.
