Heavens no, I was not insulting his use of grammar, nor his person. I withdraw my comment and will crawl back into the hole from which I came.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean that your opinions weren't valid, just that your approach was not constructive. It would be helpful for you to point out where you think his logic is flawed rather than just claiming he isn't knowledgeable on the topic with a blanket statement. We can't all be experts in everything.

I'd imagine it would be very difficult to assign dynamic properties to the massive amount of voxels in an ocean or lake, and to make those voxels obey the laws of fluid physics.

Yes, I don't think that it could ever be handled in the same way it is in Minecraft or Terraria. If have ever been around when massive lake drainages occur, you know the kind of processing it takes. So unless they have some kind of clever way to calculate and fill below-water-level spaces, I doubt that it will be dynamic water.

seriously @TehWardy, your cred as a developer is diminishing with every post.

I think he meant, "How is NQ going to handle this, as there's only so much an "average internet pipe" from the server to my machine can handle?"

There is no need to be a jerk about grammar mistakes, especially since English is at least a second language for a lot of people in DU. If you are complaining about him using non-technical terms, I don't see how that diminishes his reputation. I would say that it increases it since he isn't only talking in super technical terms that many people wouldn't be able to follow.

  4. I would have thought that they would not have messed with water since it can lead to some odd things in games where you can mine. For example, if I am digging up from some place 2km down and come up under a lake, what happens? If the water is static, then you could completely dig out around a pond and have a punch of floating water, which would be odd imo.

I wonder if NQ did a full character API, could they do one for planet/system stats so we could create real time maps out of the game? My knowledge of that stuff is limited though, so could be wrong.

Would be nice. I wonder if there are reasons why they wouldn't want to do this other that the time.

The subscription model stabilizes income for a service provider. Without it, NQ wouldn't be able to shell out millions every month for their ongoing infrastructure costs. Imagine the "pay as you go" model from a service provider perspective. They put together a massive server farm in advance, and hope you decide to play at least 60 hours a month. One week someone plays 12 hours, the next 2. The next week not at all. NQ can't rely on that income to operate. With a subscription, NQ knows how much money they have from month to month and can provide services accordingly. It's just an agreement.

I think this is probably the best/only viable argument for subscription. Sure there are many other methods for companies to get money from a game, but this method works well for long term games like DU is aiming to be.

Ah. Then all we need is to have variable lengths in the forcefield emitters and we are gold :)

I want a ship that "walks" across the ground by turning on and off slanted force fields. Probably really inefficiency, but could be novel.

That is not how these things work in the world or YouTube and Reddit. Sensible voices will quickly become 'fanboiz' who will try to mask and hide the 'horrible bugs and issues with the game'. The negative parties will ignore the fact this is (now a) pre-alpha and troll away at the game with no intention but to cause enough damage and make claims of wasted money and demanding refunds.

The more I think about it, the more I feel releasing now is a mistake which will cause more problems than taking the hit of delaying it.

Obviously still be playing the game as far as it can be from day 1, I have the 30th off anyway and will fly out to Vegas for EVE Vegas the week after so plenty of time to test and try stuff out. I do hope there will be a solid and constructive feedback channel for anything we find.

I am apt to agree with you blazemonger. Although I would like to play DU as soon as possible, this doesn't seem like the best way to solve this issue. Of course it may have been unavoidable since development on certain things took longer than expected.

  9. I agree with you guys are saying. I didn't expect much more from alpha, the only thing that I am disappointing about is the lack of 24/7 availability which will make it harder to fit into a standard working schedule. I am glad they thy have decided to have a stand in for the alpha instead of just moving it back several move weeks or months. It would be for the best to make sure that certain gameplay elements are available before the Alpha 1 is started (hopefully some early form of groups at least).

EDIT: But it still is a postponement, imo. Alpha 1 is being moved back regardless of what they are replacing it with. (I am not saying I'm disappointed with what we are getting through the pre-alpha, it just doesn't change the fact that the alpha is being moved back.)
