ForlornFoe reacted to CommanderLouiz in Purchasing Pledges/DAC's as gifts to help with fundraising
You could always make a throw-away email address, buy a pledge, then give someone the email info.

But that would be tedious, plus what if the y want it on their own email? So I get what you're saying there.

Also, during the kickstarter I remember they said if you simply added in to the price of whatever pledge level you were backing the amount of one DAC, they'd give you an extra DAC, or however many you added. This portal does seem to lack that though.

ForlornFoe reacted to yamamushi in Purchasing Pledges/DAC's as gifts to help with fundraising
I don't know how everyone else feels about this, but I would like the ability to start purchasing DAC's now to help with the fundraising.

I'm one of the people who has a high pledge already (Boosted Emerald) and so going to the next level will set me back ~$4000.

Instead of doing that, or having to open a second account to pledge, I think it would be useful to be able to pledge in smaller increments by purchasing DAC's now ahead of release.

In addition to that, I would love to be able to purchase pledges to give away. I know that technically you're not "buying" Alpha access with a pledge, it's more of a perk and a thank-you for pledging at all. However, I also know there are plenty of people out there who just don't have the financial means to be able to get into Alpha but would be valuable members of the community if they could provide feedback and help to get the word out a bit more.

Opening these options up would allow me (and others in my position) to continue to help the fundraising efforts, and to also help bring more people into the community.

    tl;dr :

    - I want to be able to purchase DAC's now to help with Fundraising
    - I want to be able to purchase pledges as gifts to give away to help with Fundraising and to bring more people into the community.

ForlornFoe reacted to yamamushi in Remove User Post Counts from the Off Topic Subforum
I'm sure I'm going to get some flack for suggesting this, and the idea didn't completely come from me, but I think that the spammy threads taking over the Off Topic subforum only existing to boost post counts are somewhat inappropriate. Both an inappropriate use of the subforum and a somewhat exploitive way of artificially boosting post counts to try and add legitimacy to user profiles who otherwise aren't contributing in a constructive way elsewhere on the forums.

However rather than amending the forum rules to simply ban those kinds of threads, I believe that posts in the Off Topic subforum should no longer count towards your overall post count.

As someone pointed out on Discord, on other forums sections such as "Forum Games" and "Off Topic" don't count towards users total post counts.

This would alleviate the issue of taking advantage of the Off Topic forum to artificially boost post counts.

    Welcome to the forums :-)

I'll try to answer your questions as briefly as possible, but bear in mind that they are only cursory answers as the topics could be covered more in depth and people could likely talk about them for hours just based on what we know so far.

1.) No NPC's in the way you're used to. If there are, it's likely they will only be market NPC's (and my assumption is that they will be more like bots on the market rather than physical NPCs you interact with). Everything will be player operated, no NPC empires. If you see it, it was built by a player somewhere along the line.

    2) No automatic offline protection unless you build it and provide upkeep for it. You can build in places where there is no PVP allowed but they will be few and far between. Think of them like "safe zones" that have to be discovered. Otherwise, mostly, you'll have to build defenses for your bases. Your characters will be safe as they will disappear when you log off.

    3) Online only. One single server. No instancing. One shared universe for all players.

    4) Subscription yes, something like ~$15 a month, give or take (I'm sure this is likely to change so don't quote me on this). But if you buy a pledge you get several months (or years depending on the level of your pledge) of subscription time with it. You won't be backing at the gold level and expected to pay for a subscription on day one if that's a concern of yours because the subscription items (DAC's as they're referred to) come with the pledges. Another thing to note on this topic is that DAC's can be purchased from other players in-game, and they can be sold for in-game money as well. So you could, in theory, pay for your subscription using the money you make in-game without ever having to actually pay real money for one (outside of your pledge or whatever). Very similar to the way Eve Online works with PLEX, although there are some differences in the mechanics of DAC's that aren't worth bringing up here, suffice to say it led to a lot of debates this summer.

    5) More like space engineers. Check out these videos for an idea (although they don't cover the research/skills/materials/etc necessary, they do show an example of actually "building" a ship):

    6) Yes, you will need engines in specific places to control your ships adequately. Those systems aren't implemented fully in the videos above, but we've been told that where you place your engines will have an impact on how your ship actually flies. Also considering fuel weight, etc. This dev blog covers a lot of the topic, but it may be a lot to take in: https://devblog.dualthegame.com/2015/09/18/lua-script-and-distributed-processing-units/

I realize this is not exactly on the high list of priorities for gameplay mechanics, however it should help with communications with the community and potential future community members. Forgive me if the link is somewhere on the forum web page, however I could not locate it, which should be good feedback in and of it self. I did not see a post on this yet, so my apologies if this has already been mentioned.

ForlornFoe reacted to Volkier in Have to get something off my chest.. NMS related
Ok, I've seen a lot of people (not just in DU forums, but elsewhere too) go on about how NMS has affected the indie gaming industry, how it made it hard to back projects, how it's shattered people's faith, why games like DU are struggling with popularity, comparing NMS to every single game in development, inserting a "but NMS was so bad when it promised something" when talking about expected features etc. etc.

I really have to get this off my chest, so vent incoming:

    People need to get NMS.

I understand it was a huge disappointment, and a lot of people chose to ignore the red flags that were up right from the get go with it, because they were passionate about the genre and the potential of such a game. There's nothing wrong with that - people pay for hope and wishful thinking every time a lotto ticket is sold. But those red flags where there from pretty much the first announcement.

Again, there's nothing wrong with hoping something you love would succeed, and to an extent letting emotions override logic. But denouncing every other indie project and game because "look what happened to NMS" - is basically refusing to accept that you didn't want to accept it's failure. Or alternatively, refusing to learn about what to look for, and what should set off alarm bells in the future.

And no, I'm not being holier than though - I've screwed up in exact same way with other games in the past. I've backed a couple of 'kickstarters' at different times, that I was extremely passionate about, despite the obvious shortcomings with those projects, all because I really really hoped for a 'chance'. Like I said, there's nothing wrong with that - but either learn from your mistakes, accept that you were happy to pay $ for an off-chance the red flags were co-incidental and false, or simply grow up and accept you screwed up. And sure, if you feel like you no longer want to support games that are in development - there's nothing wrong with that.  But don't act like NMS's disappointment was a surprise that nobody saw coming, and that it represents all indie gaming developers.

The red flags were there, plenty of people saw them, there's nothing wrong with paying for 'hope' and an 'off-chance', there's nothing wrong with not buying pre-alpha stuff, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with pointing out red flags or when something doesn't quite sound right with a healthy dose of factual skepticism. There is only positive outcomes in any conversation or discussion through that. But when it comes to saying "NMS did it, so everything else must be all lies" - NMS does not represent any other game, project, development team, game features or genre. Get over yourself.

Alright, I've said all I've needed to on the subject. Time to bring shields up to full power in anticipation for the incoming flak

Plus hello games never said NO, THIS WON'T BE IN NMS. THAT was the reason why people were hyped because they never told them what NMS will NOT be.

I agree that other games have nothing to do with what happened with NMS but I can understand people who got burned by it to not trust another indie company pulling something even bigger off. NQ have to go through this mess but imho they do a good job and tell people what this game WILL NOT BE like - that's the most important part

In DU's timeline this is an ancient style of design, but not necessarily useless. It should work okay as a two-crew atmospheric scout/explorer.

Tell them you appreciate them and love them. Holidays are the worst time of the year for suicides, and sometimes all it takes is a phone call to remind someone that others love them.

Besides the sappy stuff, get drunk, party, kick your cat, and crap in your family members stockings. Share the love, be safe while traveling, and always bring your towel with you.

Hey guys, looking to see if there's other coders and engineers lurking around that are looking to form a group. Mostly the group would be engineering systems (buildings, ships, weapon systems, etc..) and selling them individually. Trying to avoid a clan atmosphere with hierarchies and stuff so it'd be more of an ingame business. Reply here or send me a message, looking to start getting everyone together soon to plan as far ahead as we can.

ForlornFoe reacted to Volkier in Collision Damage: Do we REALLY need it?
If anything, I'd go with Twerkmotor's suggestion, of collision damaging capacitors - or even modules on the ship. A small ship kamikazeing into a planet sized starship should go pop with the starship's crew going "Why did the proximity light flash for a second? We didn't feel anything.. Oh well, must have been a space rock or something". (ie. it taking little to no damage).

WHY do we need 'some' sort of 'collision' damage, is because we 'need' people to actually put some effort into landing, and building their ships / constructs around the ability to maneuver / land better or worse under various different circumstances. Like having half the thrust engines blown off. I know I'm likely speculating here, but ramming full speed into a planet to "land", or alternatively having a "one button auto-land" - aka NMS style - is going to ruin this game for a large number of people imho.

ForlornFoe reacted to Captain_Hilts in Building Tools
    Greetings,

I've looked around and haven't seen this discussed anywhere....

    So here goes.

There should be a building tool that allows you to place a shape (eg a cube) and then define it's x, y, z, dimensions by quickly entering a set of numbers. For example with the cube - Width = 500m Depth = 5m Length = 5694m.

This would be very beneficial for large constructs as placing such a large thing seems it would be hard to do by "hand" as shown in the building demos. Also it would allow more precise measurements of what you are building verses having to count "blocks" which could be very tedious - especially for large constructs.

Anyway if this is not a thing already - I'd like to see it done.
    Captain_Hilts out.

ForlornFoe reacted to ATMLVE in When will the game get more popular?
At E3 2016 when they put out the trailer, I'm sure lots of people were skeptical. Short trailer of a game in pre-alpha by an indie dev team... Everyone's seen that before. Most immediately threw caution tape all over that. The thing was that there was barely anything out there at that time for Dual Universe. Not much info and barely any videos on it.

Next E3 (2017), if NQ puts out another video, it will be a different story. There will be so much more for them to show, and people searching for DU online after they see the video will find a plethora of info and videos, and hopefully lots of alpha gameplay.

I think the alpha will bring in new people but I think an E3 demo (perhaps even live with whoever is playing the alpha at that time) combined with the amount of content there will be on the game by then will really start to bring people in.

If product even in alpha speaks for itself we going to see people flock in here. I'm confident about that for one reason. This very game will be a break trough in MMO voxel based category. You may see more games like this in the future with different flavor, theme but as always the first will be remembered as a classic. Sure, many of player will get filtered out of this, but Sci-Fi space genre lovers will stay for as long as this game provides entertainment. So far nobody else on horizon to come even close to this promise.
