  1. The thing is it doesn't matter what each individual player's definition of griefing is.

It only matters what NovaQuark's definition of griefing that necessitates action on their part, is.

There are plenty of things players can do in a pvp game that may cause other players grief.  But that's not the same thing as griefing.

To me "Griefing" is not the act of pissing off another player.  It's the whole process of someone wanting to piss off another player so badly in their tiny little head that they cross a line that requires a moderator to step in.

People will get mad when there's PVP and sometimes people may feel a bit of grief when they loose a ship or something.  But it shouldn't feel so bad that it ruins anyone's day.

Griefers are the ones who try to break that balance.

  2. Pledges don't seem to be correct all the way around. I have a Gold package, but it doesn't show in the forums.

Did you get the questionnaire email from Kickstarter?  I think it was about a month ago.

You had to give them your email so NQ could link people's kickstarter accounts to their forum accounts.

  3. Different ways to control gravity would be pretty cool.  But i could definitely see it being a bit too complicated also.  It's hard to imagine how the gravity unit would know what was inside the ship and what wasn't.  And it would be strange if the gravity unit just effected the entire area of the core unit, even players outside the ship.

Gravity boots sound like the simplest answer for sure.

It would definitely be fun to be able to control gravity too though.

The idea of using gravity units as a weapon sounds pretty interesting too.  Imagine sticking a second reversed gravity unit to a ships hull right before you board it just to screw everyone up inside.  Definitely lots of possible problems too though.

  4. I definitely like the idea of some kind of mini games within the game.

I was also thinking it might be cool for there to be some kind of golf like mini game or something that involves the terrain.  So coarse building could be as much of an activity as playing the game itself.

I also love the idea of simple board games too.  I've wasted a lot of time playing checkers in Assassins creed games.

  5. see this is what im afraid of! i down wanna leave (and by leave i mean disconnect) my base that ive built to come back and find that its been raided! greifing is a thing. its not warfare or piracy, piracy is spending time in the game and then building up a ship yourself to steal others stuff, greifing is players getting quick resoursces to do small amounts of damage to important bits of things, and stealing things then just killing themselves in a random location to delete the items! piracy and greifing are 2 VERY different things.

To me the point is to make a game where it's almost impossible for griefers to cause their grief.

Griefing is something that is sort of hard to define.  But to me it is when one player stops another player from enjoying the game.  And there is nothing that player can do about it.  That last part is important.

In Dual the idea is that there will be safe zones provided by arcships for you to hang out in and build your base.  As long as you stay inside the safe zone you should be 100% safe.  It will also be possible to create safe zones or combat free zones outside the arcship safe zone, but i think these will have vulnerabilities that will need to be protected.

  6. Glass was one of the things that they had a lot of trouble with in Landmark.  They had both voxel glass and prop or element glass pieces.  And they both had their problems and benefits.  It may not be as easy as it sounds.

The voxel glass material had a few problems but there were a few things i loved about it.  Mainly the fact that it could have depth and would warp things that you looked at through it, which could be beautiful sometimes, especially from a distance.  You can see a little of the voxel glass in my signature pic.

The problem with the voxel glass was in the texture it had or the part of it that was visible, especially up close.  There were two versions, one had a bumpy texture like an ice sculpture and the other one had a pattern of circles on it that was supposed to be elfy or crystalline or some crap.  For whatever reason the Landmark artists seemed to have a lot of trouble with creating subtle textures.  I think it was just because none of the artists ever once actually looked at their work in use.  So hopefully DU won't have that problem.

All the DU textures i've seen so far have been beautifully subtle and modern looking.  So i have high hopes!

The element glass also had some good and some bad.  Because they aren't made out of voxels and can overlap with them, they can be a lot more versatile.  And the texture was much more subtle and modern looking up close.  But at a short distance they were almost invisible and because of LOD being shorter on elements in Landmark they would actually completely vanish at an average distance.

I guess what i'm hoping for is a glass that looks clean and modern up close but is still prominently visible at a distance.  I love building things with lots of glass   B)

  7. Does this mean they don't intend on adding the ability to use glass for custom cockpits, or that they just didn't have it in their example?

If they don't create the ability to design your own cockpit windows, I will be a little peeved, since one of my cooler ship ideas pretty much reqires it!

Yeah i'm hoping glass just wasn't ready yet.

We have to have glass.  I need it!

Whether it's a voxel material or modular glass elements or both.

Hmmm wait was there glass on the window of the huge space station in the other videos?  I feel like there was.

edit: Nope no glass on the station in this video either

i have faith they will get us some glass though.

  8. the carry over sounds a little unfair :/

Why do you think it sounds unfair?

I think for some there's a misconception that having built stuff somehow equals progress.  But there's no way to win the game.  All there is to do is build more stuff.

So if we both start at launch and you have nothing and i have a Blueprint for a ship i spent 50 hours working on.  We both still have to harvest the same resources to build a ship.  You just have 50 more hours of fun to have designing yours.

  9. I'm definitely hoping they give us a few options to tint or re-skin elements like the cockpit.

But even if we can only re-tint them.  We'll still have the ability to build our own cockpit any way you want out of voxels.

In the last video where they build the freighter you can see them use a non-element cockpit.  I don't know for sure about smaller sized ships but i'm guessing you could still build a cockpit instead of using the element even on the smallest ships.

It can be tough to achieve the same level of detail with voxels that you can have with pre-made elements.  But hopefully there will be decorative interior elements like the corridor pieces we've already seen, to help with that.

  10. Honestly what you've done so far felt less like satire or some kind of activism and more like trolling the moderators.  Testing to see how far you could push them before they shut you down.  I'm not a big fan of wasting NQs time.  But i did have a few laughs too.

I think you could pretty much keep doing what you were doing if you just focus on the organizations instead of the people behind them.

Targeting a real leader or member of an organization turns it into a personal attack.  And something that doesn't belong on NQ's forums.

But i don't think you would ruffle too many feathers if you stuck to fake headlines like,

BOO suspected of operating intergalactic Ashley Madison website

    or

Latest Cinderfall Syndicate email hack reveals possibility of collusion in recent Ailoth election

    or

Solar Secure's methods called into question regarding their handling of recent Oil Pipeline protests

Organizations are fare game in my opinion you just have to leave the people out of it.

  11. My guess is that there won't be a lot of all out war.  As in two or more orgs going at each other with the goal of complete annihilation.  I do hope it happens from time to time because it will probably be pretty awesome.

But i think what we will see is a lot of clashes over territory and resources.  Two or more orgs going into the same area and fighting it out until someone emerges victorious.

NovaQuark definitely shouldn't be orchestrating conflicts because that is pretty much the opposite of a Sandbox.  But it will be up to NQ to create mechanics that sort of encourage people to compete over things.

But for people looking for nothing but a quick purely PVP experience, i think there are plenty of other excellent games out there that provide that.

  12. More? I guess people do enjoy making me popular for spam! This is over. Guys continue talking and enjoy talking about sakej99 and I! Have fun. Bye... Over this mess...

It's amazing what a good old fashioned apology can accomplish.

Clearly there's been some over-reaction to this whole thing.

But a simple "Oops my bad guys, i hadn't considered that you might not want your inbox spammed" would have gone a long way towards ending it too.

  13. I posted in one of the recent Ads for Solar Secure and gave them a bit of crap for spamming.

But just to be clear i was only giving them crap for the totally unsolicited private forum message.  It had nothing to do with double posting their recruitment message by mistake.

The double post thing has to at least partially be caused by how these forums work.  I've seen more double posts on these forums then i ever have before.  Although i guess it might also have to do with so many more people posting using cellphones?

Anyway the issue for me was absolutely 100% about MMOTHEBOSS using the private messaging system to send out unsolicited recruitment messages.  That is just not what the messaging system is for.

No one deserves the level of vitriol that was spewed into that thread though.  But i also think it's important for some of the people who may be new to the world of constructive online gaming communities, and discussion forums, to be taught some of the basic ground rules that allow them to exist without turning into a cesspool.

This isn't an AOL chat room or a FPS lobby or whatever it is people think it is.

The only way you can WIN here is by helping to make the game better.  There is NO REWARD for having the highest post count.

  14. I guess one big question is how will constructs interact with each other?

Hopefully there will be some way for smaller constructs to overlap and attach to or dock with larger construct.  So a moving door made out of voxels could be programmed to open and close.  But maybe more importantly that would also allow for smaller ships to dock inside of larger ships which i'm pretty sure we all want.

I think it'll be a lot easier for most doors to be elements.  But i definitely hope that we can build our own doors and elevators and whatever out of voxels too.

I really want a underground base with a huge hidden door that opens just below the surface of the water in the middle of a lake or something awesome like that.

  15. "

It's creative fun, Atmosp3rik and this kind of idea is quite common in Forums with a suitable number of creative people.

We write awkward or interesting things and pass the ball. You are not required to write or participate in here, but a sentence or two will certainly not hurt anyone.

The thread and the King of the Hill might get more complex, interesting or it might just fade out into obscurity.

However, despite all you have noted, I would still like to see you add in here, whether or not you will, is up to you.

    "

    These games are fine.

It's the people abusing them and the rest of the forum that i'm talking about.

  16. I know Alpha is not even out yet, but has there been any type of list of what we can build with? I have seen what has been built in the Devdiary videos (f'n awesome by the way!) but is there a way we can get a list of what is planned at the moment.

Right now I just want to know if there is small 360 turn turret chairs/domes? (I think my username will give away what I am looking for. :) )

Or....can we make constructs of our own cockpits and engines?

On the official Dualthegame.com site in the Media section there's some concept art of elements and even a few 3d examples.  Although it seems like not all of the concept art i've seen is in there.

If you check out the @DualUniverse account on Twitter they have been tweeting tons of concept art too.  If you go back over the past year you'll find lots of pics of elements that aren't in the Media section.

  17. I'm sure there will end up being some conflict and some war in Dual Universe.

But it's important to remember that Dual will definitely not be the kind of game where Nova Quark divides us up into teams and pits us against each other.  It's going to be up to us to come up with reasons to go to war.  Which i'm sure won't be a problem.

But the consequences are really important too.

I doubt there will be anything like a "world reset" other then for technical reasons maybe.

I think there are plenty of other games out there that are about dropping you into the middle of a war at just the right moment to see some action.

Dual is about the whole experience not just the conflict.
