ParagonExploiter reacted to NQ-Nyzaltar in Forum Rules
We want this forum to be a place where everyone feels empowered to have an open and friendly discussion with us (the Novaquark team) as well as other community members.  To help make this possible we have created rules we feel will keep things positive and ensure that proper netiquette is observed.

By posting on this forum, either publicly or through private message or other means, you explicitly agree to follow the rules and guidelines posted here. If you do not agree with these rules – in whole or in any part – then do not post. All members will be treated as if they have read and understood these rules and guidelines.

    (I) Be respectful and courteous.
The Dual Universe forums and community site are provided for Dual Universe players and those interested in discussing topics directly related to Dual Universe. We understand that community members may disagree with each other, and even with us, but we expect opinions to be expressed in a reasonable and polite manner.  It is important to maintain an atmosphere of civility and respect, so that all voices may be heard.

    (II) Communicate constructively.
All communication, whether between players, moderators or Dual Universe staff, must be constructive. Posts without constructive commentary can distract from the topic at hand, reduce the visibility of valuable communication, and discourage others from participating in the conversation.

    (III) Following actions are prohibited:
Posting off-topic replies or replies that are likely to drag the discussion off topic. Necroposting on old threads (unpinned threads in which the last reply is older than 2 months). Spamming on a specific topic. This includes creating multiple discussions on the same topic in the same or multiple forums. Cross-posting a specific reply. This is also a form of spamming. Posting an image without a meaningful text. A meme is not a response to a discussion. They are usually disruptive and can be easily misinterpreted. The same is true for animated GIFs. Calling out other players or community members by name to shame them for actions or opinions you may disagree with. Naming and shaming is not tolerated. Posting in any manner that disrupts an official thread. Official threads are topics created by the Novaquark team for the purpose of collecting feedback and opinions. Threatening legal action. Unfortunately, this kills all conversation immediately as we must refer all further discussion to our legal team. To preserve the conversation intact and unaltered these types of responses may be immediately archived. Trolling (provoking) people. Flaming (insulting, attacking) people. Picking fights isn’t a good way to make your point. It usually means you don’t have one and are just trying to cause trouble. Using profanity. Including creative spelling or character substitution to bypass word filters. Using the report system in an abusive manner. This is a form of harassment and a tremendous waste of time for both staff and moderators. Discussions and comments involving real life politics, ideology or religion. These can be incendiary topics and will usually lead to inappropriate behavior and uncomfortable situations. Publicly posting any private discussions, conversations, or other material between a user and a Novaquark employee (confidentiality policy). Refusal to follow the directions of Novaquark staff or representatives.
The use of an alternate account to circumvent a forum suspension is forbidden at all times. Additionally, the use of alternate account(s) to influence or misrepresent opinions is strictly prohibited. All forum accounts must adhere to the forum rules and Code of Conduct. Failure to comply can result in disciplinary actions against all associated accounts.

Violating these guidelines may trigger a warning, followed by either a temporary or permanent suspension of forum privileges depending on the severity and frequency of the violations.

(IV) The following actions may result in the immediate suspension of forum privileges:
There are some actions severe enough to result in immediate temporary or permanent suspension of posting privileges without prior notification. Serious or sustained offenses may result in suspension of not only the user's forum account but game account as well.

Threatening other members or Novaquark staff. No, “just joking’ is not a defense. We take this very seriously. Publicly revealing account or personal information of any person, community member or Novaquark staff. Posting harmful links pointing to viruses, malware, worms or trojans. Posting sexually explicit content. Including posting links to such content. Hate speech is not tolerated in any form. Attacking any ethnic group, religion, gender or sexual preference/identity. Promoting exploits, cheating programs, piracy or any sort of illegal activity. Attempt to impersonate Novaquark staff or another member of the community.
Violations of these rules may result in further steps taken with outside authorities or agencies. This may include your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and local or national Law Enforcement agencies.

    (V) Abide by moderators and Novaquark employee’s instructions.

If you disagree with a moderator or employee's actions, do not discuss or challenge the matter in forum posts. Send an e-mail to forum@novaquark.com, and be sure to include your forum handle (name displayed on the forum), but NOT your password, and clearly state your concerns.

IMPORTANT: Forum content is moderated at Novaquark's sole discretion, and content may be modified, removed, or otherwise restricted by Novaquark employees and/or moderators.

"Interesting options you brought up there. I can't speak for the developers, but in my opinion, fixed destination stargates are the thing.

For one, let's look at how stargates are deployed. Destination A is where probe number one launches from. Destination B is where probe number one becomes the light of the tunnel. To justify 'dialling' stargates,
probe number one needs to be able to do the job of the hypothetical probe number two. That means making probes re-usable.i.e Probe number one serves as an anchor, tunnel point one, tunnel point two, tunnel point three, et cetera. You network stargates by finding some way to connect them, or 'grouping' them. For example, Stargates A, B, C and D belong to Group Alpha; Stargates E, F, G, and H belong to Group Beta. Then you have the obvious problem of setting the connecting link(s) for Group Alpha and Group Beta. Mix size restrictions in there and possible logistics of network topology and you've got your work cut out for you. In 'dialling's' defence, I don't know anyone that prefers 'point-to-point' topology (direct access - or fixed in your case here) to mesh (dialling Stargates or a case in which every Stargate is connected to another) network topology. Obviously, allowing any Stargate to dial another is something that makes Stargates more at home in Star Trek and Doctor Who as magical teleportation devices but in this case, good ol' ale is better than the synthetic protein shakes they serve these days. In other words, 'fixed point' is a tried and proven design. Make it hybrid because we'll be playing in a civilisation 500 years into the future, and you have a Stargate that has a fixed end and two or three points.

You know where it leads, you know where it ends. Dialling Stargates makes it easier for our dear small scale newbie hauliers and truckers, but if I can pass through a zillion territories without changing bus, why not just make one big country instead? 'Fixed point' does three things for us:
It provides the necessity for a well thought out logistics system. Case in point: your road network. It isn't just strips of tarmac intersecting at weird points; some people sat down to analyze traffic behaviour at different times of the day and built the roads according to those needs. You can build a dozen streets and only two are being used and you can bet on it: they'll be clogged. Without 'Fixed point', every Tom, Dick Jack and Harry would set up a Stargate linking everywhere and nowhere at once. Seeing lights zip everywhere through space is beautiful until you realise that those could be your foes with their new 'omni-location' Stargates bearing down on your territory from a thousand points. Not good. It makes Hauling the more important. This might not be your thing, but there are players who find a certain fetish pleasure in sitting down after a hard day's work and staring at the beauty of a digital Universe while hauling hundreds of dollars worth of goods for hours at a time. They love it, God knows why, and who am I to judge? There are certain days I'd rather pay someone to stare at a screen for 120 minutes and jumping for joy every one or two minutes at getting through another gate without 'Gate Campers' holding up traffic. Put in a dialling Stargate and you leave them without their pleasure. Why pay someone to jump just one gate? Might as well bring a few friends if I'm so worried about my cargo. It brings in the suspense of 'content creators'. That's another word for 'Gate Campers' or Pirates. You've got to love guys that sit like 'Chameleon stones' with the equivalent of fifty howitzers as the fore cannon ready to do the '21 Gun Salute' for you and your buddies. Bring your Own Shades: big explosions make big lights. In other words, 'Fixed Stargates' are easier to develop for Alpha and Beta, much more fun and much more necessary for the immersion the devs have been gunning for. That's just my opinion on it, I'm more than ready to see someone's differing perspective.

If you're wondering, yes: the Aether is still offering it's TRANCE Stargate Network and logistics services to any org that's interested (21 organisations have 'formally' signed up so far).

    Cheers.

People in Russia are called Russians, those in France are French, and people from America are Americans; but what should people in Dual Universe be called?

"Dual Universians" is kind of immersion-breaking, since it is nothing other than the title of the game itself.

    So, what do you think?

If you have any suggestions other than what is on the poll, please feel free to suggest them!
I will try to keep up with this and post any other REASONABLE options on the poll. I will not be putting up anything I think is offensive, or if it is just pointless. (like: "name-of-my-organization"-ites, or "I-like-space"-ers.)

Other than that, let's hear your thoughts!

    Don’t Save Me.

"I have nothing left to lose,
Nay, I want to lose nothing more.
What is life but a ruse?
What do I have left to live for?
More time will bring only rue,
More of life will leave me with less.
    I have family here, true.
But, beyond, we’ll all suffer less."
Kyle Susumu's Diary, last day of Earth’s existence.

Somewhere along the line, I lost count of the number of people I was killing. I left Eidolon to do the job of protecting my back while I cut the strings of fate of every hostile organism in sight. Was I selfish? No. Was I careless? No. Was I a mindless beast? Yes.
One after another, lives got snuffed out by my rage, my firearms and my hands. For all the bright flashes of light, the shouts of rage and terror, the sound of feet and ammunition and the stars that watched in serene silence, my mind was bent on only one thing: taking these bastards with me.

“You are the most stupid fellow I’ve seen all my life!”

I ignored the AI even as a shell blew up less than a score feet away from me. The unforgiving force of the explosion threw me into the air like a rag doll. My face was the first part of my body to hit the flaming frame of a destroyed vehicle. Surprisingly enough, I didn’t black out. I was no soldier, but I understood the benefits and dangers of passing out in the middle of a fire fight. As the pain coursed through my being, I longed for the benefits.
Struggling to get on my feet, I spotted a soldier coming towards me. His uniform had neither the insignia of the Resistance nor the design of the hostile forces. I barely made it to my feet before something snapped and I fell down in a heap. A chilling, electric pain charged through my bones as I realised what just happened: my spine had broken. I couldn’t feel my legs and the rest of my body was in too much agony for me to lift a finger or call for help. All I could do was watch him through the rage that clouded my sight. Where was Eidolon?

    “Are you okay?”

This guy had to be a joker. Did I look okay?
A bullet ricocheted off the frame, reminding us both that the battlefield wasn’t a place to chat. Then, he made the big mistake of trying to drag me away. If I thought I couldn’t speak, I was right—I screamed. Startled, he dropped me abruptly and looked me over with concern. That caused me even more pain. The stranger laid me on my back and crouched on the ground. Something exploded a distance away from us, followed by the short scream of a combatant.

“You have broken bones. Wait here.”

I groaned and managed to get some words out of my mouth.

“Don’t save me. Save them.” I looked towards the retreating soldiers of the Resistance.

    His face clouded.

    “I’m not with them.”

    I gave him questioning look.

    “I’m with the Earldom.”

What kind of name is “the Earldom”? Probably some conceited people with enough hypocrisy to pretend they didn’t want to control everyone else.

Vortex Two was trying to hail me through the communications device. After some quick thinking, I decided to answer.

“Vortex Two, find Petrovsky and track my beacon. Come pick me up in ten minutes.”

    “Yes, sir.”

I looked at the Earldom fellow one more time.

    “What’s your name?”

    “William.” He said, getting impatient.

Talking was hard and I was pretty sure the warm liquid I felt under my back was blood. Whatever had to be done needed to be done fast.

“Does the Earldom support these madmen?”

“Do I look like I support them?”

    “You tell me.”

He sighed and rubbed his face.

“I don’t support them. Listen, we’ve got to get you to safety.”

I was about to say something, when I saw a shadow on my chest.

“Put your hands in the air!”

William looked up and aimed at whoever was commanding. I could tell it was Petrovsky, although I couldn’t see him.

“Petrovsky! This…man is not an enemy!” I almost choked on my blood, before William raised my head a little.

The Russian came into sight, along with four other Resistance members. I knew there were more, but I couldn’t see them. Where was Aditi?

    “Where’s Aditi?” I asked him.

He bent down and looked me in the eye.

    “She’s dead.”

“What?!”  I shouted before gurgled breathing reminded me that I was still going to meet her anyway.

He looked at William and I answered the question.

“He’s with us. Take my wrist band. It has a beacon in it. Take it and get out. Vortex Two will pick you up.”

He sensed the message right away.

“You want me to leave you here?”

My eyesight blurred for a second and I spat out more blood.

“I won’t be of much use. But you, you can help them. My spine’s broken and I’ve lost too much blood. You’re standing in it.”

He looked at his feet and barely managed to hide his shock.

“I will not leave you here.”

    William gave an irritated sigh.

“Don’t save me. Save your men. I’m dead already. Get out: Vortex Two is searching for you and they already have the beacon’s signal.

Don’t let them come here, don’t let them find me.”

Whatever he wanted to say, he kept it and nodded solemnly.

“You are too good to die alone.” He whispered and stood.

My vision darkened five shades and I just had to close my eyes.

    “I’m not alone. They’re with me, they’re waiting. Go, Petrovsky: I won’t forgive you…if they come…”

The sounds became distant, but I heard them leave.
The explosions faded into muffled sounds as I tried to open my eyes one last time. All I could see where the stars, twinkling and shining. I had brought the legacy of Oethe to this planet. I had succeeded in my job. Did Eidolon know that I would die? Where was he?
A crackled voice spoke gently beside me. It was Eidolon.

    “Goodbye, Grand Architect.”

I grunted and caught a last glimpse of the stars.
Kyle, Nora, Jeane, Meera and the rest would be waiting for me, I’d finally get to see everyone again.

That was where I was headed now. My final resting place.

    My home among the stars.
