If I get into DU at start I had an idea to make a simple vehicle as soon as possible and run taxi service ie. give people quicker way to get from arkship to the edge of the safe zone, (assuming NQ don't include some fast travel option to speed that up, maybe hope not), but there is still the question of how people are going to pay. Do we get anything to start with or should I focus on people who have been in long enough to have something (since it would take time to build the vehicle anyway)? I still need time and information to hone this business plan, especially its earning model, perhaps cargo transport for miners with provision.

     

    Short to medium term goal, get a TU to secure a safe home-base so there is a place to return to if later adventures end badly.

     

    I'm not member of any org yet, will look into it closer to launch with more certainty on issues like can my computer run it. My current main interests are  building (not mass production but designing new), especially capital ships and buildings. Join large group or smaller tighter org? I have also considered founding the church or temple of Klang to spread the faith and fear of Klang from space engineers community into DU, to temper his rage and in this way protect all players from freezes, crashes and spontaneous explosions. Good excuse to build a fancy temple. Anyone interested??

     

     

  2. Make large dynamic construct and use it as a base. Devs have already talked how there shouldn't be any strict/technical limit to how large one you can build if you get the people and resources. 

     

    I'm sure there will be groups who would prefer not being tied down to fixed locations, pirates or players with other shady dealings, military forces that want more flexibility, mining orgs that want to move their operation quickly when a mine is exhausted or  when price of something they aren't mining goes up in the market. Also helpful if those pirates get too powerful in one area.

     

    Should this be in builders' corner rather than idea box?

    I wouldn't be surprised if ppl take off from work for release day and play 24/7 for days (or take shifts) just to be the first to reach space. Same will and can be done here

     

    Random people can do surprising things when you give them the means. I've heard people from NQ saying that the deathstar is technically possible (except planet killing weapon), but unlikely to happen because of effort it would take. I disagree, if DU becomes successful and long lasting and Disney doesn't kill Star Wars, there are actual changes for that to happen. I would also take concerns of planets including Alioth being strip mined to large extent seriously. 

     

    btw. How many titans has Eve had? 

  4. Orbital bombardment would definitely add an interesting element in the game but there should be counter for it:, shields and anti orbit weapons, which being stationary should be easier to make and more powerful than ship based ones.

  5. How about a large but really powerful shield that pretty much needs to be built as static construct on the ground but projects shield around some other construct from the distance like space station. Think Return of the jedi / Endor. This could add new tactical/strategic points to consider. 

     

    Shields for constructs if in game in general should not be something just for large organizations any more than thrusters or weapons. The amount of resources is more a question of how many of how large ships you can make with what quality of parts. One player can have fighter with possibly a shield that suits ship that size. Organization has super star destroyer that can take hammering from entire fleets of smaller ships before losing shield.

  6. Propably wouldn't support total invisibility in any sense, but depending on what kind of means of detecting ships and constructs the game has then also stealth systems would be good. Could for example have underground bunker hidden from sight, but visible to some scanner, but if you invest in stealth tech it would either not be detected, require better scanner/higher skill level of scanner, be detected only at shorter range or show less details.

     

    Actually the range of detection should be something you can affect rather than turning invisible. Better sensor sees further, but better stealth tech reduces detection range. Combination of the two determines who sees the other first. 

     

    But again, this all depends on the means of detection in the game. If there is radar then stealth tech should follow. If you can only track things visually then no.

  7. The key to cities is having reason for people to gather in limited area. I think another major incentive for this would be security.

     

    The first post mentioned raiders, warmongers and griefplayers and if one area can offer protection against this. This depends on the territory mechanisms. We know there are territory units with some level of protection, but not invulnerable. Cities might be supported if there were much more powerful (still not 100% invulnerable) protections, that were also much more expensive so they would only be built in few places where many players would contribute, size and energy needs would also affect this. The protection could also consist of several elements like, TU, shield generator etc.

     

    I haven't played EVE, but I've heard it has citadels or something like that, which are shielded against attacks except for specific set times. Would some gameplay element like that work for cities?

     

    This way we could have relatively few places with higher security than what any individual player or small organization could get anywhere outside the safe zone around arkship and as such these areas would be attractive. 

     

    I also remember seeing a post on this forum suggesting some system where individual territory has some protection or status and if it is completely surrounded by claimed territory it can be elevated to different status or something like that. This would also be one way to increase the cost of the protection so number of these places would be low enough to gather enough players.

  8. Big screens playing real video in game would probably be bit difficult / lag inducing, but I do like the idea of having in game media. Something organizations could do, not just posting on forums but preferably in-game. Maybe there could be some simpler mechanism where rather than seeing videos on screens you walk by, it would be possible to "look at" the screen and then have a video played to individual player. At the simplest it could be Youtube link that opens pop up window over the game to play the video. Then have static image or just text title visible on the screen walking by.

     

    I do hope there is possibility add at least proper pictures on the screens, perhaps within some limitations concerning image size/detail.

    More likely a long day of space pirating or being interstellar dictator. :D

    I didn't even realize to think of that but yes, that could have a great significance. Also now there is an AI controlled arkship somewhere in the galaxy with nanoforming capabilities.

    I did, but then the forum didn't let me upload the doc file that I need to pm, so I had to remove formating/different font, basically everything but raw text so the files combined would fit under the 500kb limit. Stupid limiting system, but I ques it can't be helped. Now both files are up.

  14. Short stories are not my strong suit, but here is my story for Novawrimo. In an attempt to contribute to Dual Universe role the story proposes an in universe reason for the design of arkships (as seen in visuals I could find by the end of 2017),  while facing some philosophical-/moral questions. 

     

    I'm not native English speaker, but have written quite a bit in English and try to get better at it. Constructive criticism of the language is welcomed as well as of the story.

    edit: unfortunately the forum apparently requires me to have also word doc. attached here to include it in message as required by contests rules and the forum decided to count both files together towards the 500kb limit, even when I tried to have them in separate posts. For this reason I had to remove lot of formating/ separate font I used to highlight some things and make the text more readable, essentially all but raw text, in order to fit both files within the limit.

    I just went through my text and agree completely. I think I'll go for it with just my own work. If something is horribly wrong I can at least learn from people hopefully pointing it out. Publishing market here is so tight that even if I ever get published here I would like to aim for English language markets someday, not in short texts though. For some reason they are a horrible pain for me, this included. I wish I noticed the contest sooner. Would have had more time to push through that.

     

    btw. The rules talk about ceceding rights to the story to Novaquark, could I still add it to my fanfiction.net page?
