I am interested in joining a mining corporation as in Eve I was a miner almost entirely and enjoy it very much.  I have yet to be able to login yet to play as I am a new donator but look forward to learning the mining system as I haven't read anything that truly shows the process in detail.  Before I make a commitment is there a mining tutorial or anything that shows something more than just the animated gif that seems to be everywhere (or is this something that I have to wait for my pre-alpha forum access to see)?

We have a pretty limited knowledge about mining in this game but i can tell you 3 things.

    1. You will be able to mine with your universal starting tool

    2. You will not be able to mine with vehicles or automate it

    3. There will be a scanning mechanic where you can scout out materials

Now since we don't know exactly what skills will exist and how they work i wont cover that. But it's the basic understanding many of us have thus far.

What is the monthly fee for? Just for saving the players progress?

Novaquark just has to keep the server(s) running.

They don´t have to create new content, they don´t have to create new maps or zones. There are no quests, no NPCs no PVE content.

Don´t get me wrong, I´m willing to pay a monthly fee but I would like to know what for as the community is generating all the content.

A gigantic single shard universe requires a giantic server cluster that costs to run. The monthly fee is for that as well as the future content they create. There's already plans for expansions and those are free for the players. Meaning you pay the monthly sub and the game will keep running and giving you new content every now and then

Just curious if solo play is going to be practical?  I'd love to build a SE Rescue type ship (working within the community of course to do so), then head out for a month of travel to some unknown corner of the Universe where I can continue building in peace.

Just curious if this is likely to work without getting ganked after 6 months of work.

Honestly. While Solo means everything will take a longer time for you to achieve and some things will practically be impossible. I for sure think it will be possible for you to fuck off to another corner of the galaxy flying a month straight. And if you were to do so i would seriously doubt anyone would find you or even want to get to where you are within the first year. Even if people were to somehow visit the same planet as you settled on, chances are they wont stay long enough to find you on the planet. If you build underground some may even settle it while never knowing you exist there too. The possibilities are endless but i wouldn't expect you to get ganked that far out. Not on purpose at least.

  4. DarkHorizon had a pretty nice analysis tbh, it's not the first time FullSend shared a political map like this so it sounds reasonable. Either way is there any chance a better quality picture will be uploaded? Where you can actually see some of the smaller names.

  5. I mean you have the tools to do it, i don't think it's necessary to ask for a specific mechanic. Use Lua and building blocks to create your own casino. Thanks to the RDMS that will be you can host one with full safety provided you are legitimate yourself. People would then come use your casino provided you have a reputation and isn't scamming gamblers. This could lead to a lot of fun scenarios completely driven by the players imagination.

In my opinion it is not plain and simple unless other mechanics enable it to be so and it becomes >90% of the function or so.

In this case it requires real money to be able to flow into your character in some way - and not just subscription time. I have been trying to read through stuff but I don't remember for DU about a shop (cosmetic only or pay2win products), the subject of RCE or 'black markets'. I only recall a point made that in-game subscription time tokens (was a 3 letter acronym) will all be bought with real money even if they can then be traded inside the game, enabling some successful players to earn enough in-game to be playing essentially for free. NQ will still be getting someone to pay for your time, however.

Ok, thinking about it for a second: that would already be a mechanism for buying skills from others against paying them their subscriptions... one avatar can pay2win (at least the skills) by paying for others, ok, yes.

This doesn't kill the advantage of an old character, however, but it does weaken it, alright.

Ok, is it part of the NQ ethic to fight against pay2win elements emerging in DU, or is this a hot issue for you more personally Lethys?

By the way, I'm happy you are answering me because it is helping me to think about things and I do not know/remember NQ's position. So far I have liked the dev posts, but I keep forgetting what I agree with them about lol...

I rather not see people paying a bunch of money to up every skill in the game to high level in no time. Everyone who spent weeks on skilling will feel shit and its P2W. Just because there could be a market for it doesn't mean there should be one.

People are already able to use DACs to get resources, which is expensive but if you add skills you unlock the ability for people with thick pockets to get an advantage on every level if they want to. Reason I'm fine with DACs is that it enables people to play for free by being good at the game and it's markets. It comes with a drawback which i don't want to see expanded in abusability.

If you had TU units down, would you really even need to patrol? Since no one could build without blowing one up, and DU has mentioned email notifications for shields (surely some form of notification for TU units? or could see on the map that its not blue any more?), so surely you should be able to assess the state of your territory without physically going to each unit.

Also, not to be cliche, but space is vast. If you find a remote enough system, shouldn't you have it to your self, at least for a time? Or at least theoretically possible.

Well i was talking about patroling a whole planet, not what you have TU units on

And yes go remote enough and you might be undisturbed for a long time on one

What I said was somewhat unclear.  I did not mean one person would be located in each tile.  I was guessing the size of an organization that would be needed to defend a planet and I think it would need at least as many members as tiles.  I agree they would be organized into patrols, but there would need to be enough to keep the whole planet under constant surveillance.  Most members will probably only play a few hours a day and some will be administrators and support people, so I am assuming the number actively patrolling at any time would be much less than the total number of members.  They would need to have constant surveillance to keep anyone from quickly claiming unclaimed tiles.   Even if the organization has the strength to defeat anyone who makes those claims,  doing that would probably take more resources than making a TCU for the tile themselves.

It's gonna be a tough task for sure but i doubt you need an org sized one member per tile. I'd imagine a hundred men could if given the neccessary resources (vehicles + fuel) survey the hole planet regularly (once a week or something). It remains to be seen of course, but i am fairly optimistic about it since i've done similar things elsewhere like in Arma 3 RP where we had multiple police patrols covering the map, there were blindspots of course but in general most of the map had eyes moving about and decent response times.

I would imagine any organization large enough to defend a planet from intruders would have the resources to create enough TCU's to cover it.  Alioth for example has over 50,000 tiles and I would expect an organization would need at least one member per tile to defend a planet effectively.  The real number will probably be higher than that, but that is still a huge organization.  If the organization has not claimed all the tiles, then any organization that manages to sneak  or fight their way in will be able to place their own TCU.  While the intruder's claim would probably not last long, it would still be easier for the organization controlling the planet to place their own.

Actually i'd imagine you could use patrols to cover large areas. 1 man per tile sounds like a weird setup, you'd probably make a few groups of 5-10 and give them fast vehicles of any kind. Lets say they patrol the planet every week, it shouldn't be too hard to pass through all 50 000 tiles with this method, every group making their way through a few dozen tiles in one go, i doubt you'd even need to cover every exact tile if you can see adjacent ones as well. Not to mention it might just be to prevent rivals from settling on your planet, harmless individuals who may live underground alone which you'll never find doesn't even have to be counted.

This is all speculation because we still have no confirmation as to what the combat system will be, but if it's a system as you and Zamarus suggest then that might make it a bit more engaging.

As to whether WoW combat is boring; it's a subjective thing, isn't it? What one person finds entertaining another might find boring. That said, In WoW you can move around and have dozens (or is it hundreds now?) of different powers you can use in combat for different effects. In the scenario described you wouldn't be able to move (as you're in a turret), and I doubt you'd have more than a couple of additional actions (maybe changing ammo?) if any. Basically, I'd imagine that tab-targeting in this situation would be like combat in EVE only you don't get to control the ship and you only get a single turret to fire, not exactly fun for me, but maybe other people will find it entertaining.

Like I said, though, it's all speculation; we still don't have a solid understanding of how combat will be done other than their ideas so we might all be totally off-base. That said, I do genuinely hope it's not what I described as I think that would kill capital ship combat.

I think you are a smart guy and i will tell you this to prevent you from getting disappointed.

Chances for capital ship combat is probably really small to begin with when you take in resources needed to build such ships and the vast space they roam which lowers the chance of engagement. "Killing capital ship combat" sounds really weird in this regard as it doesn't even exist until players are capable of battling with a couple of them. I recommend approaching combat from the perspective of that people will fight with what they can afford to put together, so you might see way more ground combat as well as fighter dogfights than you will ever see bigger ships even flying around. Keep this in mind as IMO it puts things in perspective, especially why it doesn't hurt to have the need for gunners as the ships themselves are most likely a huge accomplishment.

Actually, the bolded part of your reply got me thinking of another issue with this whole 1 person = 1 gun discussion.

Novaquark have categorically stated that, due to the networking limitations, combat in DU will be percentage-based, rather than aim-based (in other words, like EVE or WoW). If this is indeed the case, I'd imagine the job of being a gunner would be incredibly boring: sit at the turret, left click target, left click fire button, wait for the target to die or your ship to blow up.

Fairly sure they talked about a semi-lockon. If you don't know what that means it's essentially you aim at something, left click, the lock-on goes on the target (where you are pointing) it thinks you are aiming at, fires and calculates your accuracy. When you hit it also calculates damage versus targets health and other stats before giving the result (this all going really fast). I hope for sure that this is the kind of thing we will get and it's also easy to mask so you almost feel like you're actually aiming.
