  1. Yeah I know that's pretty obvious. My point was that non-lethal weapons are used in real life because the consequences of death are extreme, whereas in DU the consequences are basically zero, so from a functional perspective dummy guns are kind of pointless. Unless you are talking about something like a taser, which would be a good addition as it would allow you to incapacitate people without killing them, so as to hold them hostage or negotiate with them or just make them watch as you destroy their ship.

Good explenation of the real life reference, i was considering the incapacitate option but it could be abuse to disable enemies in real battles then and would have to be a weapon meant for that use aswell.

  2. This is an interesting idea. I could see it maybe being some sort of cosmetic item way down the line, like Lethys said. The only thing that I would point out is that it seems a bit redundant. When you think about it, all the guns in DU are already dummy guns, as in they don't actually hurt anyone in real life, and "death" within the game just means a quick respawn. Wouldn't it make sense to just do training and paintball (excellent idea by the way) with live targets and guns? You could have every one who is participating only carry what they need and then slap down a respawn node right next to the area. So even if they "die" within the game, there are no real consequences, real or virtual.

Yeah a lot of the reasons why i wanted non lethal is because the drawbacks would be too large with them, but working around that with respawn nodes might be a good fix. As for they dont hurt anyone in real life anyways, i mean thats pretty obvious and not the point. But the rest were good points.

  3. That was merely a statement for the implementation of virtual dmg, not the gun itself.

For tactics you'd want actual guns that do dmg because of said reasons. Or none at all, because you'd only train situational behavior, who has to go where, who runs right/left, how you communicate in a proper manner and so on

Yes, the idea was for the guns to increase the flavour of it (player experience), not to have a big pratical use. Which is why i had the opening sentence being what it is.

  4. So you don't need those guns for training hitting youryour opponent, cause that's plain useless, but you want it because of tactics? Sorry but that doesn't make sense (as twerk already pointed out) because

    - In such trainings you decide on strategy (no use for a paint gun)

    - you want to know what kind of weapons (sniper, assault, minimum, whatever) does how much damage to what kind of armor (none, light, heavy, power, whatever)

    - you want to know how many guys you need to take out a certain opponent reliably

Still, I don't see the need except as cosmetic and perhaps some tournament.

And no, I don't feel like the devs should implement some kind of virtual dmg that paint gun does in order for them to be useful. There are more pressing issues

Well of course you can make exercises without guns, something i intend to do in game to the extent possible. The reason for the guns were to give the impression of being fired at through sound and visuals but not doing damage, it ups the simulation.

And well since you said "there are more pressing issues" look at the original posts first sentence where i open with acknowledging how far from a priority it would be.

  5. I get the feeling you have a vastly different perspective, for example the main purpose of this thing wouldn't be to put total newbies into it but rather exercise already formed military, dying wouldn't be presented as something only "a noob does". But rather help with finding ways to pull off a strat and/or tactic with maximized speed and minimal loss. And yet again it doesn't fit to look at mock battles from the perspective of a fleet since i've presented it as between ground troops, infantry if you may.

There are many different ways to use this, not everything is covered by your scenario. Also you don't need training armor or grenades really, a creative commander can make good use of simple means like a fake rifle. I don't disagree with you on everything but i think you are underestimating peoples creativity and enthusiasm when it comes to developing ground forces.

  6. Yeah, you got valid points but i think you misunderstand the training itself, for you it might sound boring to have non-lethal weapon drills with squads on the ground. Doesn't matter if its close to real life or fictional as heck. The reason i presented the idea is because there's a lot of people who love realistic troop tactics, commanding your guys to move around a set up training area to avoid enemy fire and rendezvous at a certain point. Returning fire and other stuff. Having this done by two generals against each-other as a mock battle scenario, etc.

I understand that some would find this boring but there's those who wouldn't. You can always leave room for both ways of doing it to cover more of the player base.

  7. Oh, that?Simple, get them out on a field and have a good old NPSI battle (Not Purple? Shoot It), in essence, one alliance, two fleets, staging a fight with each other for fun or training purposes, Purple referring to a person who's part of your fleet, so, whoever isn't, just shoot them.

People get to fight, money is spent, the market flourishes and people are not bored because they joined Yawn Federation, as even in an  NPSI battle, they still get to shoot stuff and be trained for different scenarios by veterans.

Well of course there are other ways to go about it but it wouldn't be the same experience. A lot of people love elaborate drills, i'm not an EVE player but i talk from ARMA 3 experience. I know here's a lot of people playing or has played ARMA before who are going to play DU. Planetside people as well, etc. When it comes to ground based combat since it's not necessarily in everyone's interest to a fight in space with a fleet, i was talking about guns for players on the ground not for their ships really.

  8. I know something like this is far from priorities but wouldn't it be great to have some kind of dummy gun? You can fire it, it make sounds and simulates the impact without hurting anyone. You could use it in training facilities built by your faction, mock battles and military drills in general. Maybe even for play like paintball if players are creative enough.

What do you guys think about a training gun in general? I'd like to hear everyone's reasoning for why it's good/bad/whatever.

  9. DAY 2: The sun rises upon the lands, especially strong on the mountains in sector A1. In this very sector a lot of participants are crossing their paths. TheBloodDefender scavenged the mountain foot and found a Metal Pipe laying about. EvilPorcupine decided that there was too much competition at the mountain and wandered off into the A2 Forest where he thanks to eyesight spotted a camouflaged box containing an Assault Rifle!

Devious_T late to the party also arrived at the A1 Mountain carrying a P Ammo he found for his pistol back at Sector Zero. What no one really knew was that Halo381 had thought of a clever plan using his new enhanced speed. He grabbed the C4 from the starting platform in Sector Zero, rushed like a speed demon to the A1 Mountain and used his C4 charge to blow the mountain top off and trigger an AVALANCHE. Luckily for Aesras he had shortly after finding some Duct Tape at the mountains north side also found a bunker to hide in using his Keycard to access. But disaster! Aesras, TheBloodDefender and Devious_T are now buried in snow and stone rumble. Aesras without a scratch but the others got struck hard. All of them now have to spend the whole Day 3 digging themselves out.

Over at Sector Zero the whole event could be heard, the participants here had other stuff to think of tho. GrifFan were not here to mess about, the government from his home colony had essentially forced him to participate as a trial for seeing something he shouldn’t. He grabbed one of the Armored Space Suit V1 plus the Assault Rifle. Time for things to get serious he thought. Ajhkhum was likeminded and made sure to hog two Metal Pipe before giving GrifFan a quick nod like two fellow soldiers would. Joining them was Goju_Ryu who after seeing that the coast was clear ran up on the platform and took the second Armored Space Suit V1.

Being all alone was not a worry for MinerMax, in fact things were probably safer without the competition close. MinerMax spent the whole day searching for more stuff in the F1 Forest. He found much to his surprise a thing he had seen before at the very start, another Armored Space Suit V1. This much to his delight uncontested. Someone who also liked little interaction was 5p34k3r who didn't manage to do anything this time either.

Last thing to notice, an announcement echoed through the air. In E2 a Hoverbike appeared! It will be available for grabs for three days, if nobody claims it by then it will disappear!

[in SECTOR ZERO(Spawn) following items are available for GRAB ITEM]

THIS MARKS THE END OF DAY 2

  10. DAY 1: Day one had begun, the participants gives each other a quick look before making their decisions. MinerMax and Goju_Ryu wasted no time here, both ran off to other sectors. Goju_Ryu to the E1 Mountains where he searched and found some Duct Tape. MinerMax tried his luck in F1 and found a Welder.

TheBloodDefender, Aesras, EvilPorcupine and Halo381 all ran for the two Keycards in the center, the ones leaving without a sad face became Aesras and Halo381 since they were a little bit faster, getting hold of them. Halo381 was so fast he even managed to grab the Light Space Suit V1 before anyone else could blink. Seeing what happened TheBloodDefender and EvilPorcupine ran for the Mountains in A1, shortly followed by Aesras.

Two people had a little more patience as they were determined to get what they were looking for. Ajkhum and GrifFan both snatched two Metal Plates each before stepping of the platform. Meanwhile both Devious_T and 5k34k3r couldn’t grasp the turbulence from the other participants, afraid to interact they ran off the platform but just as Ajkhum, GrifFan and Halo381 they remained in Sector Zero.

THIS MARKS THE END OF DAY 1

  11. Life in space is harsh, colonizing new planets was not as easy as in theory, this left a lot of groups with harsh living conditions, some ended up on planets too hot or too cold to grow crops, some ended up on planets where organisms and nature tried to kill you in a hundred ways everyday. Some even ended up in too fruitful planets where some groups took control and claimed all resources as their own.

Today as an aftermath of the terrible introduction to our new life in space some people has joined on a designated planet where you can fight other humans for the cream of the crop, money, resources, you name it. There are rumors some participants joined just for the fun of the battle. In the end all we know that for some to win, others have to lose.

DAY 0: All nine participants ascend on a circular metal platform from elevators that was hidden under the platform itself. Aesras glares across the platform looking at each of everyone closely. GrifFan doesn’t share the same interests as Aesras and fixates his eyes on the large cylinder in the middle covered in weapon racks. On those racks there are different kinds of weapons, gear and items. Especially appealing to him was the Armored Space Suit V1 on his side of the center. The sun is shines strongly on the metal floor, reflecting the sky in it.

Suddenly a horn sounds through hidden speakers around the platform. It rings loud with bass. To the west there are forests and mountains, to the east desert. What will happen day 1 is up to each one of the participants themselves, unless of course they are victim to a disastrous event. From the speakers a very formal female voice says ‘LET DAY ONE BEGIN!

  14. Hello everybody, i wish to play a game. Not any game that is, but a text based game for you forum people.

    What is it like?

Well imagine Hunger Games, or any other Battle Royale kind of game that you have encountered before.

That's pretty much how it is going to be like. It's however based on my own creativity and everything is something i've

come up with myself and wish to share. Also don't forget that this is tweaked to sci-fi setting.

Now how is it going to be set up?

It will be set up the way that people interested in participating will have to PM me to reserv a player slot, there will be a max of 10 players.

When it starts every player will get to make one move per day, and this is based on live time. The moves will consist of having your

character either travel around the map or attacking, sleeping, chasing gear or whatever more that is presented at the start. Players are also allowed to communicate with eachother in the comment log but it should be limited talk, i cannot however restrain people from talking too much but you get the point.

[The map can be found here: http://imgur.com/a/X13nI ]

Day one all participants will spawn in the Sector Zero, in this middle point sector there will be weapons, gear, items of different kinds.

If you wish to grab an armored space suit or run away to another sector and hide is all up to the players themselves.

I will be using a random number generator where i've put in possible events everyday and it will tell me if an event will happen that day

and if so, which kind. More importantly a random generator or dice roller will also be used for attempted attacks, everyone will have the

same chances (accuracy) when trying to shoot another player.

EXAMPLE OF A HAPPENING: "Day 3 starts out with Player Y moving across the dangerous mountain tops at Sector A1 only to his horror face Player X waiting for him on the north side. Y Wants revenge for the equippment stolen from him Day 2 and blasts X in the chest with his Standard Issue Pistol for (damage) X twitches and turns around and dives down a cave in the mountain side 50 metres behind him. He has to spend his night there.

[Here is a quickly made doc listing the setup for this game: https://docs.google.com/document/d/12eJagXkPi_ubd1dcYZOeNf0g_AbOIa6FTgA3xzIJnbU/edit?usp=sharing]

(Note that damage, health and other things like that will not be revealed until it starts)

There will be rules for how you can move, for one you might have two movement points per day, you can use one to move from a sector to an adjacent one or hide the night in shelter, maybe attack another player. Or to two of these things. Some options will be presented to you as hidden features that you discover if you get into a situation with the right requirements.

So when would this game start?

Preferably i will fill all 10 participant slots and thus be able to decide on a date pretty fast, otherwise i'll give it a few days and then set a starting date with the participants there are.

I would like to reward the winner of this game as well, if anyone has any idea for this or want to help running this show feel free to PM me.

  15. Started this thing recently so i just finished the 5k word count mark and haven't had the time to polish and correct it. But i wanted to participate in the contest and share it anyways so here you go. It also serves as background story to my own character in case you wonder about the main characters name.

Thanks, unfortunately i noticed towards the end that the perspectives might be too hasted and good point regarding the way he dealt with the gun, of course he can kneel and pick it up with his hands backwards but unloading it in his pocket is quite the stretch so i want to change that later. Thanks for reading, i originally started this for fun but rushed it to be able to compete, i'll be seeing everything over!
