  1. Well if the devs don't implement something like that (which most likely won't happen for release), then you have to simply take times with good old clocks and rely on players acting as referees. You simply can't assume that every bit of block, voxel, technology or possible script for such races will be implemented. That's why I would plan for a 100% manual system and a rule set which covers this. You can work from there and come up with maybe more and more ideas on how to use actual game mechanics to automate certain stuff.

But assuming that everything should be possible from the start is just overbearing

  2. there are always restarts in Alphas and betas, they are needed due to changes, some of which could be huge. also it wouldnt be fair on players who did not get alpha or beta access to join the universe and the testers are already geared up and own land etc so i would assume a fresh start on release as well.

No need to assume a wipe before release - that's just the way it is. No wipe would just kill every game

  3. Warden, no disrespect but please keep the gore to an minumal. Don't want anyone anyone hit by the moderator for something that is going to upset someone because there kid saw it on an game forum.

    Just saying.

The reason I asked was I was planing on making a copy of The Event Horizon and leaving it for someone to find when the game launches. Perfect for an Halloween event.

A game forum he shouldn't be in the first place - so w/e. No safe space for special snowflakes

  4. Hi there and welcome to the forum:

    Hi everyone.

    Hi there

I understand that singleplayer isn't a large element of this game, but still. Who doesn't want singleplayer?

It's no element at all. This is solely a MMO and no one here want's a singleplayer because we all WANT that MMO

Players will obviously still want to play on the server but exploring your own universe is also fun.

    See above

The system of crafting and gathering resources could be made easier for singleplayer.

The update system could be something where it is updated when you launch multiplayer and the difference can be seen in singleplayer mode also.

    See above

Could we also have a local multiplayer mode also?

No. This is a single shard and there will definitely not be any other servers than that one single shard where everybody plays

Not everyone has a 24/7 connection to the internet for gaming.

Then you shouldn't play DU at all. Or game a MMO at all

Most gamers do but others don't have the time download updates and connect to the server to play. They just want to launch the game and play. In this way, the game can be exposed to a wider spectrum of gamers and people.

They start the launcher, it updates and you play. No problem there. If you have 56k modem or ISDN or some crap, you shouldn't play a MMO anyway

    And also an interesting concept:

Say for instance a player was playing singleplayer or local and then wanted to play multiplayer, they could pause the game, select multiplayer, it loads for a couple and they resume the game, continuing their flight but their worlds/ solar system has faded away and they are now in the multiplayer universe approaching a safe zone which will soon appear in the dark void. I dunno how this will work in real time but it's interesting to think about.

    Uhm....not really. Because: see above

Oh and btw: you have to pay in order to play. Please don't start another topic on that - use the search function because there are many many threads about that already and all of them come to the same conclusion

  5. I did remember hearing that JC was thinking of shield protection for objects that would be invulnerable for 24hrs regardless of the owner's presence. If a nomadic fleet was holding station in space and had those shields up they're fine at least for 24 hrs. Like anything else in the game inactivity will bite you in the long run.

It's 48h for now and it's more like the reinforcement timer in eve. That shield needs fuel. As long as it has fuel, it protects. If attacked, it enters reinforce and after 48h you can kill it.

  6. 1. Would be cool.

    2. Would be buggy as hell

    3. Yes please

It would be really easy to balance. just limit the energy one voxel can take before overloading ect.

As I said: you could implement that with limitations, which would kill the op argument to some extent, but then again you can't possibly see what players will come up with, despite those limits. When fixed elements are in place, you can foresee to some degree what will be possible. There will be people who will abuse even predefined engines and use them in a way NQ never anticipated. No need there to make it even harder to balance a game

  7. I get what you're saying and I agree with you in some aspects:

Some changes will be harder to implement later on and alpha/beta is the best moment to bring some in.

But they need time to even implement the most basic features like the server tech, physics, basic game mechanics like mining, processing, building, lua and so on. Even THAT is very hard work and will take forever. They just can't do everything, you got to accept that (they're no AAA studio with 5000 people).

Some changes like for example the weathering effect would be odd if implemented 2 years after release and suddenly all players would need to gather some extra resource - but imho that's still better than implementing a broken, unfair, unfinished, not well made and buggy mechanic from start. Because that would be abused to hell, newbros would whine about it and people would start talking about DU as an unfinished, poorly made MMO as a whole because one mechanic is broken. (Oh, they would do that!).

So in terms of PR you don't want to do that.

  8.

From what I've seen in the videos of the game, the voxel system seems a bit limited. I'm not sure what other cool features the devs intend for this system but might I add a few suggestions:

    • User created structures should be able to be textured.
    • -They should also be able to be fine tuned into creating complex polygons.
    • Voxel structures should also have the ability to be given functionality, such as designing your own thrusters or what not.

Hi there and welcome to the forum,

    - User created textures: too much load when 560000 people upload their textures

    - explain further what you mean but with the smoothing tool you can already do pretty amazing stuff

    - if that would be allowed, people would just build completely op things and consequences couldn't be foreseen even with some limitations to it.

  9. I for one think we need collision damage. There is a user here that keeps talking like we need to make the game easy. I'm sorry but this isn't Mario Kart and you shouldn't be allowed to ram into a planet at slightly less than light speed and make a perfect landing. This is not optional, this is not a choice, this is a requirement. NQ said that there wouldn't be voxel recognition of ramming but that does not mean that you should take no damage. I think the idea that your ship's components take damage instead of the actual structure makes a lot more sense.

I implore NQ to not even consider implementing no collision damage. I shouldn't even have to argue this, it just seems so ridiculous that I didn't even consider that to be on the table. This is not Minecraft in space. It is supposed to have the FREEDOM of MC but it is not supposed to hold your hand and make it an arcade 0-immersion game. It's a civilization, living, breathing game.

But I'll leave you with this to think long and hard about. I didn't have to type this all up, Understand that this is all Dual Universe will ever be if you have no collision damage.

    I loved that game.

Oh and for now you can demand whatever you want but server stability and better core features of the game > "realism" like collision damage.

  10. Hopefully they make orgs raise money and then give it to the players - hilarious awoxing incoming :D

I think it will be straight forward (but hopefully better than eve): player does something (mine, sell, build, w/e) and pays taxes or does some kind of job for the gov with no salary -> org gets income and redistributes it to SRP, r&d, building, w/e

  11.

Problem not solved. I want to role play with all people, which want to do rp. Not only my organisation. That's why I wrote "strangers" in the first post. Have you ever played Lord of the Rings Online? Or Star Wars Galaxies? Have you seen the flagged RP people?

    ---

Only if you can find them.

    lol? 5 Minute example:

function chatCommand( ply, text, public )
        if (string.sub(text, 1, 3) == "/me") then --if the first 3 letters are /me, execute emote.
             ply:Me()
return(false) --Hides the "/me" from chat
        end
    end
    hook.Add( "PlayerSay", "chatCommand", chatCommand );

well thats exactly what light said? It's not that much of an effort

  12. Yeah I agree, I would prefer more darkness. Give us a flashlight and make us build larger lights, but don't give us night vision. Even cooler would be, if moons orbit planets, having them reflect light onto the surface to provide ambient night light, similar to the difference here on Earth between being out at night during a full moon (quite bright) and being out at night when there is no moon/new moon (typical dark).

Moons don't orbit but because the planet rotates, moons will sseemingly orbit

  13. I think that the nanoformer looks much better now. My question is that can you use a script reduce the maximum thrust that a given element can provide (to help with balancing the thrust vector to go through the centre of mass)?

That's exactly why they implement it.

Very nice update, good progress was made and very good new information (builders grid, nanoformer - visual at least)' keep it up!

  14. Well NQ is very open for discussion, as proved many times.

Still it's better not to waste time, money and devs on such a thing when you could use all that to get alpha out so people can stream for themselves and make videos of the tests (if allowed that is ofc).
