  1. Thanks, and no rush (Meh - my stuff just made me feel better about watchin you cats in the builders corner going off with your ideas and plans Anyone can have ideas and be a bit extroverted IMO - you guys in build land have real skills! But cheers - it pays the bills.)
  2. @yamamushi No I hadn't! Thanks! Another resource for the collection. Are you involved? FinTech isn't normally an interest area for me - I came to DAO etc from looking at public services which could be consensus based (Szabo's smart contracts, provenance chains, metadata registries etc) as well as looking at the Open Government Partnership effort and tracking the W3 efforts. Was OT.org at the W3 Blockchain workshop at MIT in June?
  3. So. Here I am. Basics: Australian. Life long gamer. Digital native and netizen. Unlike a lot of you cool kids, I'm not a C# programmer, can't do 3D models, and I'm only slowly learning LUA (by which I mean it's on my to-do list). And I've never played EVE, Star Citizen or any of other other titles that seem to give cred (does Stellaris, No Mans Sky or Rebel Galaxy count?). I did play SW:Galaxies back in the day tho. So. What do I bring to this little party? (since intro threads seem to be as much about introductions as they are a sort of "recruit me" post or NQ resume - yeah - who knows - maybe it'll pique their interest.) Not a lot really in my mind - I'm just some guy - the stuff below should give an indication why I try not to mix social and professional life. (But hey - NQ, if you're reading - I'm happy to do both for the right peep ). Professional skills: Architecture, implementation etc of High Availability / High Performance online solutions Big data | Linked Data | Open Data | Semantic Web International Standards on data exchange, web standards, technical standards (ISO, W3C etc) Information Architecture, Concept Modelling etc inc. knowledge management IT Security, encryption, blockchain etc Cloud, Distributed applications (blockchain, P2P or traditional federation) Identity and Access | Privacy Artificial Intelligence, Neural Networks, Deep Learning etc World Design / Game Design User experience / UI / machine to machine service design/ API design inc. patterns Social media / online community engagement and management Bunch of other things most people find really boring but are the foundation of stuff like MMO's (e.g. everything from time synchronization through to GIS systems) Behavioral and organisation psychology | social engineering etc Currently working in the Public Sector, sometimes an invited expert to various W3C/Internet/Government fora, presented to people like the OECD and various Central Banks/Statistical Organisations on developing for 0-scale architecture (cloud etc.), Programme committee member for International industry conferences, that sort of stuff. Completely self taught , never been to University - I'm just a guy who's apparently OK at what I do. Oh - and I've worked on a few "major" games over the years (in terms of size or brand) writing story lines / world backgrounds / inventing game mechanics etc or managing large communities inc. admin run game events and story arcs - never paid - I just love making and playing games, especially grand strategy, sandbox and RPG's. CUBye!
  4. And don't forget people - 10,000 years. A game with only humans in it, doesn't mean that those humans, on different Arks, have arrived on other worlds at different times in that 10,000 years. All sorts of evolutions/mutations/devolutions could well have taken place (and indeed it only takes a few generations - 1-200 years - to have a species noticeably adapt to a new environment - read the Mars Trilogy (Kin Stanley Robinson) for a great example of this idea). Food for thought.
  5. Copyright eh? With props to the OP (who poses the question - and it is a good one, so no flame intended, I'm just a sarky bastard...) While Aetherios is indeed correct (show off ), might I also posit the following: "If someone buy's your ship and then uses that to make their own version, or steals your blueprint and does the same, and does either in such a way that is still within the ToS (no RL hacking for instance) and the RDMS, well yes - you probably are completely within your rights to prosecute that person for breach of copyright and or IP infringement. Now - just point me towards your copyright lawyer, and the local Alioth court house and lawyer, and the underpinning legal framework you're working under and we'll get this sorted. Oh - you mean that in this lawless godforsaken world, that guy I just shot in the face for coughing near me was your lawyer? Bummer..." OK - serious face on again - stuff like copyright, ownership etc, IN GAME (and not as determined by a game mechanic designed to simply manage the assets of the game) is all Role Play. Out of game / game mechanic wise - while the RDMS will manage things as Aetherios states - that in itself creates the awesome counter-game mechanic (or playing opportunity) to develop a black market / knock off industry. I personally think that if made right it would really add richness to the game. (Someone remind me to put these in the idea box): a) You could have "uniques" - original creations by real players - the thing which serves as the template for the blueprints (which could then be mass produced). While mass produced versions may actually be the same or even superior in stats, the fact that a "unique" is by definition unique, creates essentially both a market for Art etc, but also drives a realistic system of people being recognised as master craftsmen. "This baby? It's an ATMLVE original, not one of them cheap [insert ship company org name here] knock-offs. Gonna cost you triple." You could have "masterpieces" - items which, in the process of original creation, are just "better" than anything even the AI's can reproduce. Again, adding to the value chain of craftsmen vs mass producing from blueprints. c) Custom pieces and once off's - items (tagged in the RDMS as "no-blueprint" or the like) - unique pieces of art or equipment which can't be reproduced (or shouldn't be). This would include art, possibly food (nothing tastes quite right when made with a machine?), custom weapons and ships. d) Knock-offs The game could have a reverse-engineering skill, allowing you to deconstruct an item and make a blue print out of it. Items thus produced would be tagged as "knock-offs" and will ALWAYS be inferior in quality and specifications. Of course - one could then improve upon a knock-off blueprint to make something even better than the original idea. e) An inventor tag. This one I think is important. Rather than "locking" a design/item to the original creator (which is kinda a game mechanic for "intellectual property" which I'm still not sure I agree with in terms of it could limit RPG gameplay in that sense), make sure that EVERY item/ship/weapon/thing that gets invented/made has an Inventor tag. It becomes a part of our collective history - when we look back in two years and wonder where some ubiquitous item or design which just "works" comes from, that 50 organisations produce as a staple, we always know who to give the real kudos to. Anyway - just some drive by thoughts per usual.
  6. Well, his situation was unique in that he was virtually the first Alpha awoken. But yes - for the masses - the indication (given the story is Canon), is that everyone goes through a sim while they are awaking - probably before they exit the cryo. This is the tutorial as well as character gen. No brainer there. Once you leave the sim (a private instance basically), you're then "in-game", is my read of it.
  7. Yeah - I came to exact conclusion as the OP once I'd started an organisation almost as a placeholder, and then started writing thoughts for forum posts (still coming - like you I drive by on phone atm :/) and realising there were so many background assumptions I didn't have answers for so couldn't really bring the Organisation to life. While I'm a hard core roleplayer more interested in politics, polities and social/culture (Inc. military and trade and public services) not going to a "manufacturing service space" - I have to agree - focus on your individual character before orgs. Really what we as a community SHOULD, if not MUST, do while we learn more about the DU setting is put our collective heads together to make "background" or core organisations for Alioth - stuff none of us are ever likely going to want to play and could be just NPC run for instance - the local midwives guild for instance - we know something like that "exists", but it has no gameplay value (unless characters can give birth obviously).
  8. Actually as a reality check - that's a really good point. What will the terrain around the Ark look like when we emerge. Or, to put it another way... This is the size of the crater left by something hitting the Earth at great velocity or a lot of mass. Something like an Arkship for instance. See that tiny speck in the middle there? That's an entire abandoned mining complex. Person cutout shown for scale. So thoughts: a) the "safe-zone" will be the crater. (There will have to be a crater. Can't see how there couldn't be a real impact site) the starting area will likely be devoid of all life, plant or animal - a true sandbox. Mineral resources will likely be easily obtainable without much mining? (potentially including alloys etc - material created in during the impact event itself), and we'll likely carry seed stock etc on the ship to get food started. But beyond that... /shrug. Great topic btw.
  9. LOUD NOISES!!!!!! Some hours, I wonder how people's forum rankings would look without the monetization threads to keep us going...
  10. All: You may now lock this thread. Superman is how we will deal with pirates and griefers. Thus discussions of all other possible solutions are now moot. As you were.
  11. Actually an MMO whilch was a blockchain driven DAPP would be very smart and up NQ's alley - everything is both client side and authoritative - no central server to speak of. Nerd wankering - driving game development since forever.
  12. Decent cyber warfare capability would be something I'd love to see. What's Sci-fi without some sort of computer based character. That said - you're also dealing with quantum computing and advanced AI's.
  13. Why for can I not delete my own post!
  14. Don't be so quick to write the idea off - what is DAC if not a type of digital currency, (which is how Entropa Universe operates), and that's not to be confused with crypto-currency. While I believe they (EU) have toyed with the idea of using blockchain to secure and verify transactions - this is mostly because they deal with real wold money in their economy. I for one vomit into my mouth a little at the thought of that kind of game, and I don't believe DU or NQ want to take that path. However, taking the "bitcoin / make real money" bit out of the equation - blockchain driven markets using normal fake in game DU currency (not DAC's which are just another trade commodity in that sense - i.e. - you DON'T want to make a situation where the game is people mining DU "Bitcoin" rather than having fun playing) would be both doable and cool.
  15. The inference there is logical if you look at how settlements evolve organically - which in the canon story is what happens. Perhaps the model is that the more people settling in an area, more important perhaps than building buildings (a population based zone of control model for the strategic layer of the game is a tried and true approach - did I see that in the videos?) - the more power a TU has. If a settlement dies - people move away, the zone of control shrinks or loses power. The question is - is it link to actual players, or are there NPC citizens as background flavour in DU? I do hope so given the community expectation seems to be that "we're all going to space yeahah!!!" as soon as possible - that is always a killer in MMO games - even in popular games there isn't the feel of a living settlement like one gets in say Assassin's Creed - I don't want to interact with them 99.9% of the time - it's just nice background immersion. Alternatively if it's pure player driven, the game hopefully will be really Alioth Ark from Day 1 of landing, in real time, and it will be months or years before we get to space so that the planet develops real population centers. Even a population density like Fallout 4 would be decent. Just thoughts.
  16. Reality check. Using our one REAL measure (Earth): Surface area: 501,000,000 km2 Dry bits (usuable "territory"): 139,870,000 km2 or about 29.2% of the total surface area. Arable land - example only - obviously mining is different): About 55,948,000 km2 or about 10 of the total surface area... And then to refine it further (for instance) when it comes to human settlement, historically something like 80% of all human settlement was within walking distance of salt. Key takeaway - there is a crap ton of "territory" to be had in a setting like DU - you may consider this "infinite". But only (if modelled right) a very small percentage of that territory will be usable in some way and thus matters - Sovereign Territory therefore is really actually "finite" and always will be. Sovereign Territory isn't about how much km2 you control - it's about WHAT is in the territory you control, or what controlling that territory strategically gives you access to or control over.
  17. Agreed - no shoot downs IMO. But yet another topic that we need to bundle into the general space/time/physics discussions Two immediate thoughts: 1) Lagrange points - this is why option 1 would suck - it's the obvious spot to put deep space stations. so beyond the fact it will look crap from a player PoV looking out the window if you have a single daily update - your option 2 makes perfect sense IF the DU tech is as our tech is now - gravity matters, fuel and burn matters, you have to plot courses. But if it's more "Sci-Fi" where you go where you want without too much hassle (and assuming it's Hard Sci-Fi and we need to remain below .5 LY speeds so we don't need to deal with special relativity issues) - then are we overthinking this at this point? Distance in system is pretty well massive - in terms of distance - remember, Earth to Moon is about 0.00257 A.U, or 384,400 km. That's a LOT of space. At that scale - if an object is 20 km away from another object, they are pretty well the same object - THIS is where orbit/orientation/gravity is vitally important, but you could probably handle it locally (in a server sense) and only on a needs basis without necessarily needing to maintain positioning information in real time for all objects in space, or objects on an object in space - basically, for two objects to need to work out stuff at the level you've described, it's likely to always be a deliberate thing - random collisions are pretty unlikely in reality - so the "code" will generally know well in advance when two objects will need to have those calculations worked out. Thoughts? (I'm just stream of consciousness typing out loud - it's not a flame at all - I think your post is really interesting and something really worth discussing at great depth. Because I like that stuff )
  18. @Apex - Yeah - all jokes aside - while SL is in-game/on paper an idea for a sort of mysterious roaming vigilante/law enforcement/seven samurai style group that's about protecting the "little guy" and trying to prevent the ills of the world left behind from happening again - that will definitely be a risk in any player driven effort to enforce/stop scamming etc. The only potential issue I see with the inevitable situation you succinctly describe: Is that this model in itself can lead to monopolistic trading practices which can make the game almost unplayable for new starters coming in later - it's one of the things that kept me off EvE - too hard to come in as an independent operator given the market state - the established big guys eat you up - and that's potentially just as bad as scamming. We are damned if we do, and we are damned if we don't eh? Of course - all of this is rampant speculation on the Community's part - Dec 18 is a looooong way off. Lots to happen between now and then.
  19. Yay winning - work blocks Discord's protocol or port :/ So how do I get this puppy to open on the Android app on my phone? I can't find anywhere to put in the invite. (Yeah, I'm new to Discord, because I use Slack n stuff mostly.)
  20. Great idea having this. I'll jump on in the AM and lurk on my phone - 1:30 am here on the dark side of the moon.
  21. Omnia mutantur, nihil interit

  22. Absolutely agree with Astrolator - it's a Social Experiment by any name, so it's to us to work out how to deal with the inevitable. (Haxxors (not RP/in-game hackers but people trying to be naughty with bots or hacking game code / exploits) of course are NQ's to deal with a big ban stick) It will be really interesting watching "law" evolve. (Yeah but seriously - what that other random anonymous poster said like it was an in-game discussion... don't believe them. There's no mysterious Silent Legion who's going to show up and take care of scammers for you... )
