    Hello community,

I'm here to open some discussion on the workings of what will hopefully become a much loved or loathed Empire.

After several discussions with Astrophil, and friends which procrastinate on coming to these forums, I've decided to put the confederated empire idea to rest, for now at least only to return if more people think that would be better than a super strong centralized guild.

This new concept will revolve around the same basic principles as before, Nobility - Emperor - Senate - but instead of confederation of external and internal guilds within the empire we will adhere to strict Vassalisation of guilds.

The main power will be split between the Emperor and the Senate, so as to prevent burdening one group with too much responsibility. Powers that need direct reactions will be oriented towards the Emperor, and decisions that require time finesse or many opinions will be oriented towards the Senate.

Emperor - Managing nobility - Management of Vassals / placing vassals in charge of provinces - command of armed forces - managing foreign affairs (but not declaring war without approval from the senate),

Senate - Allocating budget and taxes on vassal's - Voting on code enforceable laws and non code enforced laws, managing a judicial / inquisition force to double check for compliance with non hard code enforced laws - Creation or destruction of internal guilds (Merchant guilds, Mining corps, Imperial Bounty Hunter Societies, Piracy//Privateer organisations, ect...) - Redrawing province / state / vassal borders.

Vassals - will be minor guilds that exist within the empire, either created by the empire or an external guild that is assimilated. The structure of these guilds might have any internal composition the players wanted, autocratic, plutocratic, or democratic, but they will all answer to the Emperor and his/her military force, and obey the laws of the Senate. They will govern some section of imperial land in the stead of the Emperor, or military commander, their assets will be their own but they will be expected to fight for the empire and pay taxes.

The Empire may have territory holdings it chooses not to place under the feudal system and management of vassals, it might govern these directly with military commanders that report directly to the emperor.

Back to how the Senate will work, in keeping with the general theme of Emperor / Royalty / Nobility, to run for an open Senatorial position you must be some form of Noble. To manage the ever growing an complex system of nobles will require a watchdog, I propose for this an Arbiter / Inquisition institution, which can gather information and present a case to the Senate which can Vote to remove a Noble from their elevated status.

Some side notes to consider and come back to, how will Senatorial seats be created or removed.
What pathways will be available to becoming a noble? advance through a knightly order? instant elevation by the emperor? buy your way in? Is there a better system for removal of senators?
Will the inquisition be in charge of monitoring laws passed by the senate that cant be hard enforced with the RDMS and hard code?

Looking forward to finding more like minded individuals, suggestions, criticism, or anything else, thank you.

I don't see why this wouldn't be included in-game. DU seems to take an approach to survival on top of everything else, so to not see that element extended to space travel would surprise me.

A game I used to play actively called Shores of Hazeron had a separate client that would let you build spaceships and buildings in. You would save the template, and then just import it to a character at a crafting area and then just drop it if you had the appropriate amount of resources.

I dont think its a derail really, if the economy is what hypes you up.

I'm hoping for a regular subscription personally

A player operated exchange is a slippery and uncontrollable thing, it also brings real world factors into the game, potentially, class / wealth and so forth. I understand that subscriptions favor people with less money and more time to play, but opening the possibility to favor people with money over people with time and commitment to the game is more dangerous to me.

Im hoping that the development of in game intellectual property is just that, in game, possibly sold on an internal player exchange for in game currency. That is if the empire that has ownership over the works is willing to sell it.
There may be genius individuals that make good ships, but I believe that with the way the sculpting, applying some lua code, figuring out which modules to slap onto/into ships, testing ships rewriting code - it will probably be the work of groups.

I have a feeling we will probably see subscription, with a Time Code for currency exchange. It might be cool also if they have a direct money to currency exchange. If they did that, technically it would allow for people to pay euro's / dollars ect for items in game, without a complicated exchange for certain items for bid or dollars and no favoritism can leak in.

If they want to put up a creation spotlight kind of thing, I think they let community upvote submitted creations, so the team isnt liable for favoring people - and the community can say what they think is cool

About your point on the "player store". If I'm correct in assuming you mean players creating in-game designs/blueprints and then NQ selling them for a real world currency profit for other players to buy, would the player who also created said design/blueprint receive any income?

It sounds like a system implemented by a game like Second Life, and one other Sci Fi game I can't recall right now. So the system obviously works, but personally I'm not too big a fan of it.

I'm all for an in-game market, but the currency in which to buy them with should stay strictly in-game.

Hate to derail the topic, but I just had to comment on Kiklix's thing.

Thank you, and no offense taken

Indeed, I come off as overly excited, but I just wanna talk about it really.

I think it would be a shame not to attempt and use the power delegation system's and other utilities they're developing for players, of course though until the team is ready to show us what they have in mind, for implementation into the game, we can only really speculate on the possibilities.

It's true corporations in eve behave differently than guilds in other games. they seem to be ruled by dictators and dynasties largely, while i have encountered small democratic groups, it is the rare exception.
I like Eve and think it's corporations are pretty good, but I never really felt apart of the system, it was better than other guild systems for sure, but it still felt really rigid as most systems do.
I think we will be able to form a governing body in D.U and at least elect a president/dictator with term limits, based on an inalienable constitution set in place by either the 'guild' founders or alterable under certain conditions of unanimous agreement by delegates or guild members

Ill heave to re-examine the RDMS post and other things from the gameplay mechanics assembly section and post in one of the guild topics or make a new thread i suppose.

I wouldn't think too critically about it for now.

KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid (Not a jab at you, just a saying)

As much as I would like to keep from drawing comparisons between this and other games, I always keep referencing Eve Online. It's also fair to point out that many on the Novaquark team apparently play Eve Online, and I already see influences of it here with what little we know.

Eve has a a very robust system in place for running player made organizations. Corporations up to Alliances, and so on and so forth. And I can tell you, in my many years of playing Eve, and based off of my own real world experience in the military, a democracy will never work in a game. Ever. I explain why in one of my blog posts.

Anyways, it's too soon to even speculate on this stuff right now with what little we know. Brainstorm by all means, but don't get crazy with it!

I had a friend in another voxel building game tell me about Dual Universe around July 2014. He quit the game we played a couple weeks later. He only mentioned that DU was a voxel building game with the ability to make vehicles roll, fly etc. That itself was enough to get me excited, but as time went on and I read/reread the Dev Blogs I got and get more and more excited.

The ability to make our own world, structures, governments, spaceships itself seems very appealing although for myself I would be happy enough designing spaceships that not only look good, but function well. I dont just want a pretty ship, I want to design ships with purpose, utility...ships to be admired. I do not subscribe to the idea that a "good design" just means pretty...that is all to common with people. A good design is one where form follows function, but the form is aesthetically pleasing. I want to see if this is something I can accomplish.

The game seems vast, deep, serious (this is something I really admire...a serious game, not goofy stuff). I know it will take time to get it all there and that the DU project will probably never be 'complete' but just being able to craft good looking ships that function well....man for me, that is what dreams are made of.

I would like to see a player 'store' where we can make construct blueprints that can be sold for real money. It would help push people to make cool, functional stuff and it would help create some revenue for NovaQuark.

I woke up from cryogenic sleep while the Arkship was landing on the planet. Actually, the term "crashing" would be more exact. As you can guess, awakening went brutal.
Fortunately, my body wasn't smashed to pieces.

After railing against the AI and her creator - who had thought that waking up someone in the middle of a crash would be a good idea? -, I began to listen to her instructions and slowly stood up from my hibernacle.

Having beta-tested the nanoformer and associated nanostorage, I had no need to run the AI simulation. Thankfully, I had not forgotten that part of my memory. "It's like bycicle, you never forget how to use it" said the engineers. Well, they were true, except that I didn't recall any blueprint outside of basic shapes. Whatever, it was no big deal.

I had a precise idea of what I wanted to do: build a versatile ship and go out explore our new galaxy.
I had no idea where I was. I cannot recognize any constellation in the sky. The AI wasn't either. While some were affraid of this idea, I was pleased to have a challenge to measure to. It was the opportunity to forge our own path, our own new civilization... and, why not? forge a name that may be remembered for ages.

But currently, I didn't feel like aa hero... My body was incredibly weak and and frail, my thoughts were so slow, and my memory was shredded.
But, at least, I was able to stand up and walk a bit without help. I was moving myself with caution. The Arkship didn't land perfectly vertical so the ground was not really horizontal.
Eventually, I got to my suit.

I struggled for nearly half an hour. But finally, I activated the main systems and locked my helmet.
Exhausted, I stood there a few minutes while my personal AI - I named it "Mia" - was checking every system.
Even after ten thousand years, there were still all operational. I don't know who designed them, but anyway, good job guys.

Like in a dream, I opened the Arkship airlock, got shocked bu the environment beauty and strangeness, eventually went out, and began writing my story.

    Good afternoon adventurers,

I answer to many pseudonyms, but here you can call me Shadow  .
I like playing RPG, strategic and sandbox games. My favorites are Space Engineers, EvE Online, Baldur's Gate and a lot more.

In day to day life, I'm a french pentester (IT security) and developer during my free time.
Someday, I also decided to write a novel which I'm still working on (don't ask me where I find the time to do it, I don't know myself, but I clearly don't have enough of it).

Like what seems to be a lot of people these days, I feel a lack of gameplay and innovation in current games.
While searching (deeply) for a good sci-fi multiplayer game, I found Dual Universe which looks like very ambitious, but also very promising.
It's also an old gamer's dream for me too and I especially like the ideas to explore the universe, gather resources, PvP with ships I've created myself or create AIs.

I think that the only way to create a good game is by using all realist (and good !) ideas from everywhere, be it "copying" other game mechanics or listening to players.
Thus, I will probably make a lot of comments or critics based on my experience and my imagination. I always try to be constructive, but my imagination can get carried away sometimes. So do not hesitate to say "stop"  .

As we say in EvE, Fly Safe.

    Regards,
    Shadow

    Welcome Lego!

I feel the same way. Games right now seem to be in stagnant state. The great MMO's we have played all seem to be watered down in favor of micro transaction and cute pets vs fun game play or making a game for fun.

I was playing a voxel building game in closed beta, but that company seems to have shifted focus for a while off that game onto another and its kinda dried up. Not really playing much of anything at the moment.  I hope Dual fits that hole where I have a desire to play games. It appears to me that the people heading up Dual and working on it are passionate, intelligent and quite artistic. I have good feelings about this game.

Happened upon Dual as I was browsing the interwebs for several hours yesterday, depressed over the seemingly stagnant progression or lack of excellent games out there right now.

I might of pee'd just a bit when I started reading in to Dual Universe. On paper, it sounds like everything I've wanted in a sci-fi game, and I sure do hope it delivers.
