Ship Titles/Classes

Recommended Posts

Don't listen to others who say there is no need for class's, there definitely will be.

Now let me explain the classes for those ignorant fellows, Each class has a name of course because that class performs a certain role, Battleships are obvious because they have large caliber guns and with heavy armor they soak up damage like a sponge, Destroyers.... I think the name speaks for it self, Frigates and corvettes are both small classes but due to their small size and weight they will be much faster than other classes so great patrol vessels or convoy escorts, Carriers of course carry your fighters and bombers because i doubt you'd be able to fit many on a battleship, Dreadnought now this is just a battleship on steroids and the name means Fearless, cruisers are bigger than a destroyer but smaller than a battleship and are there for the purpose of either convoy escort duty or to support the much larger capital ships.

Each class has its own strengths and weaknesses along with its own uses in warfare and for organisations sake they put those ships into classes so people do not get confused.

That's all fine and dandy but not everyone has a knack for military sci-fi, or military terminologies at all. People will start naming ships like "Super-star destroyer Omgatron Class Dreadnought" and the whole scheme will go back to IDing a ship by its mass and weaponry. :V

Hashing out ship classes isn't really important right now as every faction will classify their ships differently than the next. What I call a Battleship, you might call something else. However,  there will prolly be a certain class of ship that comes about that everyone will recognize: Captial Ships/Flagships

I forsee many of the big corporations and nations that pop up in the game will have a Flagship that, while it might fit any other ship class, is set apart because it's their best ship. It's the ship you see on recruitment ads and such that say: "Join us, we're powerful! Just look at this ship we made, isn't it awesome?". Ships like these would probably be known throughout the universe, if not in specifications then at least in name. I remember someone wanting to make a ship called Mjolnir, that had a giant lightning cannon along it's spine. It really piqued my interest into ships of such a scale.

Ships like this wouldn't have a class, simply a name. I'd like to hear about your ideas for future Flagships

I think we got here all a bit confused. So that we here all on the same line a little explanation.

For ships we have three important categories.

The ship class:
Normally used to refer to the ship series, to which the ship belongs. The series is usually named after the first ship in the series.

So for example we have the Bismarck-class or the Essex-class.

The ship role:

These are the classical "classes" that you want to use here, but these aren't determined by the size of the ships rather then by the pupose and abilities of the ship.

For example a battleship is normally one of the largest ships in the fleet but its sole purpose is to act as tank and heavy damage dealer.

Frigates and corvetts on the other hand are meant as swarm ships and their purpose is to overwhelm the enemy with their number and even between this two roles are significant differences noticeable. Please notice this roles can change depending on the fleet in which a ship is, in one fleet could it be a battleship and in another just a mere frigate.

The ship type/classification:

This is what you want to determine in this thread, irl this is incorporated with the ship roles, but that is only because there are certain limitations how big a ship can be. So there is now real need to classify ships outside of their roles, but here in DU it is something other because we have no real limitations how big a ship could be, so we need a classification system that is continous.

So here is my suggestion for this:

We could use a alphanumerical code for it, this is determined by variables like size, weight and purpose. For each of this variables we would create categories that will describe sections within the variables, For example:

Weight:

W1 = 0-1000 metric tons

W2 = 1000-10000 metric tons

W3 = 10000-100000 metric tons

Lenght:

L1 = 0-1000 meters

L2 = 1000-10000 meters

L3 = 10000-100000 meters

Height:

H1 = 0-1000 meters

H2 = 1000-10000 meters
H3 = 10000-100000 meters

Width:

B1 = 0-1000 meters

B2 = 1000-10000 meters

B3 = 10000-100000 meters

Purpose:

T = Transport

P = Passenger

C = Combat

With this an early military ship could be classified as "W1-L2-H1-B1-C" and a later transport ship as "W3-L3-H2-H3-T"

Of course all these catergories can be finetuned for the game, this were simply example categories.

More to the point, not everyone is interested in "military sci-fi" - not all explorers and traders in DU will be military... in fact, not all fighters in DU will be "military".

My point of view is that designating ship types adds fun and depth to the constructs we all make. From a practical perspective though people will call their ships what they want to call them simply because they like the name type. Delegating ship types names will be doable inside of an given organization, but I highly doubt these names types will be reinforced on a global, game wide scale.

I say let people call their ships whatever they want to call them. Personally I would love to go up against a mothership that is the size of a smart car, with it's two person capacity.

I think people should be able to make so many different kinds of ships that classes will be very general. We'll know what a fighter is, or a Frigate or a Cruiser, but that will be determined and popularized by players, and honestly... a lot of ships won't fit inside those roles. After someone makes a Destroyer, which is to a Cruiser what a Cruiser is to a Frigate, someone's going to make a super-Destroyer, what will we classify the 'deathstar' as? What's a Destroyer that's used as a mobile habitat and has no weapons? Do Carrier ships have different classes based on their size? What about modular designs? What about Voltron? What class of ship is that?

No, seriously guys, I'm making Voltron. Holla at your boy.
