  2. Hi guys, Time for launching the community vote for NovaWrimo 2017! Rules are the same than for the 2016 edition. Starting from today, you can vote with the pole in this thread until April, 3rd at 06:59 AM UTC. Only one vote is allowed per person, regardless of the number of accounts he/she owns. To be convenient, I gathered the links to the eligible stories here: "Bastille" by Kurock "Life After Death" by Velenka "Right to Exist" by stig92 "A Day of Optimism" by Dwarf3d "Black and Teal" by Zamarus Our staff review of these entries is still in progress and we'll update you on this asap! The original announcement is still available here. Thanks to the writers for entering! Have a good read! Cheers, Nomad

  4. Hi all So as promised, here's the entry I was going to submit for Novawrimo round 1 before time and life collided with each other. On the upside, I took a couple of extra days to have friends proofread, so no spelling mistakes! Authors Notes / Glossary: Anzaki - derived from the old acronym ANZAC (Australian & New Zealand Army Corps), referring the to Armed Forces of two 21st century nation states. The Anzaki were the product of an inter-generational genetic program designed to produce better soldiers. Originally a culturally homogenous Australian & New Zealand population drawn from the family and members of a large semi-permanent deployment of troops who were effectively stranded and isolated overseas when the governments of those two countries collapsed. The results of Anzaki gene tailoring include improved immune systems and physical health and well being (a way to explain the general lack of sickness and minor injury in MMO's), and notably, an almost complete suppression of the flight reflex, through careful application of transgenerational epigenetic inheritance. To the common person, the Anzaki were renowned for exhibiting virtually no fear in battle, never having retreated, fierce loyalty to their comrades, and surviving at any cost. Australia - 26th century Australia is largely uninhabitable, largely due to extreme climate conditions. Much of the population that remains is centered on the South East Coast, and around the Perth Metroplex. Port Drum, the southern hemisphere's major launch site for Lunar and in-system traffic is located some 2000km east of Perth. Genie - Slang term for genetically engineered or tailored people. By international consensus following bioweapon attacks during the 22nd century, such individuals are readily identifiable by the synthetic gene tailoring of pteridine pigment xanthopterin within certain chromatophores called xanthophores located in the iris stoma, resulting in a bright amber eye colour similar to that of the Great Horned Owl. Tomorrow Men - Slang term for convicted individuals who have been sentenced to military penal unit. Such individuals are traded between governments and corporate interests as assets. They are kept in cyrogenic storage until needed, and then deployed into conflict areas where the loss of life would be considered prohibitive for regular troops. The life expectancy of such individuals is quite low (17 days on average). The use of the term stems from the dark joke that each prisoner's release date is usually listed in a system simply as "tomorrow" (or today + 1), because tomorrow never comes... the_tomorrow_man.pdf
  5. Started this thing recently so i just finished the 5k word count mark and haven't had the time to polish and correct it. But i wanted to participate in the contest and share it anyways so here you go. It also serves as background story to my own character in case you wonder about the main characters name. 6. "Well, I seem to have made it in the nick of time. Without further ado, here is my Contest Submission. I can only hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Thank you. " Novawrimo-ThatBrightDawn.pdf
  7. Hey all, I hope you enjoy this piece I've written for the contest. I didn't have much time with exams going on at the moment so its around 6,000 words long, but I got most of what I wanted in there. Also, I've created quite a few phrases and terms so if people are confused about any of those I'm happy to make a glossary, but most should be pretty self-explanatory from the context. Thanks for taking a look and enjoy! DT Novawrimo-LeftBehind.pdf
  8. Experiment Alpha. Before waking up the thousands of the Alpha team, surely one would need to check that the system is working as intended with a single test subject. A few times. No characters in the story are in any way related or based on characters outside the story, real or imaginary. This is a short story of around 5200 words At this time the placeholders for UMF are still in. These were never removed. Enjoy. ----First Paragraph Snippet---- Space. Contrary to popular belief back on Earth, stars do not move as you travel through space. Well they do, but the changes are imperceptible to the naked eye. And they don’t twinkle. Everyone I cared about I left back on Earth. Now Earth is destroyed, by some nova star and them along with it. Staring out into the void echos the void inside me. It is the loneliest I have ever felt. And then a space whale drifts by. -------------------------------------- Edit v1.1: Uploaded again with minor typo fixed as pointed out by Lethys. UMF is still in the document. Otherwise no changes. Edit: No doc changes, just here to say UMF remains in the story and won't be changed Edit: File was 0kb for some reason. Re-uploaded for everyones enjoyment. DUShortStory-ExperimentAlpha1.1.pdf
  9. This is my entry into the Novawrimo contest and also the backstory of my character, Ben Fargo. I hope you enjoy it. PartingGifts.pdf
  10. Hi there, I will upload my story next week after me and some friends read it again and made sure that there are no major logical mistakes in it and lore problems. Short facts: - 9 pages - 7.092 words - backstory of Lethys - year: 2525 - 2535 - city: unknown, possibly somewhere in europe As a roleplayer, all my characters need some kind of backstory. Why they behave like they do, how they see the world and so on. Since I deeply believe that NQ should provide the details of the lore, I tried to be as vague on those parts as possible but nonetheless I described the "side effects" of such an event and what would possibly happen on earth during those last few years. The only thing I made up myself is that implant in our heads for skill training. As a teaser for my story, I will further describe what I mean in a short post by the end of the week. To keep this thread clean and in order to publish this as I want it to be, I ask you not to answer to this thread. If you want to know something about the story, my writing, some other info, please write a pm. I will answer those alongside the teaser this weekend. Looking forward to read other stories
