Hello all! Thelandira (or Thela for short) and former Landmarkian here. I started LM about 2 weeks after Alpha ended and was in the 'Artists Guild' and then 'Voxel Benders' guild (after mega wipe). Totally miss that game. I just purchased DU and am looking forward to diving in and getting my hands dirty.

Here's a pic of one of my favorite builds I did in LM -

    Weekly Update - Nov 25th

One rescue was made this test, that's 22 rescues for Alpha 2, and 36 overall.

Annabella made the fourth (27, 33, 35, 36) and final rescue of their career on Saturday. @Sigtyr 's construct had a breakdown near one of the markets, after making some repairs they were back in business again.

We wish them all the luck outside of Dual Universe.

    Bugs, don't you hate them?

What should have been a simple trip from Alioth to Sicari where one round trip could have been completed in a gaming session turned into a day long excursion. I can't go into detail about the bugs but lets just say I had to make three trips instead of one. Not the best experience, but what can I say, it's alpha.

The rest of the time was spent on design elements around the fuel hauler. A bit of color and new materials were added to it's largely white canvas of a hull. Couldn't figure out how to make it visually distinctive from the small transport that can dock inside of it so I opted to go with a somewhat similar color layout. I'll work on it a bit more next week and we'll see how that turns out. I've been really leaning into the gallery for some inspiration to jump start this brain of mine but for the past few weeks, it just isn't happening.

I'm thinking about taking some adventure over the test this long holiday weekend (at least for us americans), but for now, the drought persists.

Finally, work on updating the website is wrapping up. All that remains is interlinking all the pages together, some touch-ups, spellchecking everything (if you spot anything, let me know!), then finally having my team preview it to gather their suggestions for any additions before publishing it live.

That's all for now, until next time, fly safe everyone!

Exactly my idea. But then the first time i told i would shoot anyone not on the friendly list i was almost lynched for not trying to communicate with the incoming blib on my radar.
Still this works best, just shoot everyone not neutral or friendly unless they communicate with you and draw a pact.
Pretty simple really, if you dont want to get shot just stay away from people who you dont feel like being friendly with else what is keeping you from communicating?

I'm sorry, this is one of my hot-button issues.  For the life of me, I will just never understand why people think that MMO games should be free.  I just don't get it.  Programmers spend years and years to learn their trade and then years and years to make a game and in the case of games like this, they then pay years and years of sever costs, maintenance and updates to continue providing access.  Not to mention the innovation, risk taking and passion game devs have is unlike any other service that I have ever paid for.   But people still want them to be free?!

On the other hand, these very same people will buy a $600 phone and agree up front to pay anywhere from $50 -$100 or more per month to use the darn thing for at least two years or they are in breach of contract.   They seem to have no problem paying places like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon $10 a month forever to see reruns of movies that they have, most likely, already seen that took a fraction of the time and money to make and are not near as entertaining as a good MMO.  But no one seems to have a problem with that.   There are tons of similar examples that i won't go into, but I'm sure you get the gist.

So what is it about games that makes people like you believe that its ok to even suggest that other people work for free and even cover any costs they have to pay to provide you untold hours of free entertainment?   How does anyone think that's a reasonable request?

This list is being created for anyone who or wants some DU-ish games to play between tests or until DU releases. All of these have been chosen by me through “extensive” research that I did an hour ago, as well as some personal favorite of mine. Hope you enjoy some of these games, I think some of them are definitely worth a look!

A procedural co-op space sandbox where players can build their own space ships out of dynamically scalable blocks. Fight epic space battles, explore, mine, trade, wage wars and build your own empire to save your galaxy from being torn apart by an unknown enemy

I’ve seen this game around for a little bit and although I’ve never played it myself, I find the aesthetics and mechanics look fantastic. For me it really puts into scope how big the universe is and how there is so much more out there, but less in an existential way, and more in an curious way.

Explore and reshape distant worlds! Astroneer is set during the 25th century Intergalactic Age of Discovery, where Astroneers explore the frontiers of outer space, risking their lives in harsh environments to unearth rare discoveries and unlock the mysteries of the universe.

In this space sandbox adventure, players can work together to build custom bases above or below ground, create vehicles to explore a vast solar system, and use terrain to create anything they can imagine. A player’s creativity and ingenuity are the keys to thriving on exciting planetary adventures!

Once again I haven’t actually played the game but I’ve seen it from time to time and the aesthetics are simply whimsical. I also watched a very interesting and entertaining documentary about it and the company’s creation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfUjl4owxTQ

    Star Made - Early Access

The ultimate space sandbox. Participate in epic fleet battles, form alliances, strive to dominate entire galaxies and harness the universe’s resources for your industrious empire or the destruction of others. Customize your experience, the universe is yours!

A voxel-based 3D sandbox set in the never-ending darkness of space. Create your own ships, explore new galaxies, stars, and planets. Discover and salvage space stations, fight against pirates or opposing factions in multiplayer. Equip your ships with completely customizable weapons and conquer the galaxy. Trade and make a fortune, mass produce materials in gigantic factories. Design your very own space station. Create warp gates and network the universe at your front door.

Star made is probably the game I have sunk the most hours into (although not that impressive), and I’ll admit I had a lot of fun doing it but the game has kind of stagnated. Personally, I think it is a good game but updates now rarely come out and the community is all but dead. If you enjoy playing by yourself and are able to see past some of its problems, I do believe you could have a genuinely enjoyable experience. At the very least it could be useful for prototyping ship ideas.

Interstellar Rift is an open world Starship Simulator with an emphasis on ship construction and multi-player interaction. Players can explore and conquer the galaxy with their own custom designed and constructed a starship. Space is vast, but you won't have to face it alone, other players will be able to join your crew, and help out, or build their own rival fleet and fight you across the galaxy.

I don’t own this game and have only recently learned about it but from what I’ve seen (and read) it incentivizes ship creation and allows for immense amounts of creative freedom.

FTL: Faster Than Light - Fully Released

In FTL you experience the atmosphere of running a spaceship trying to save the galaxy. It's a dangerous mission, with every encounter presenting a unique challenge with multiple solutions. What will you do if a heavy missile barrage shuts down your shields? Reroute all power to the engines in an attempt to escape, power up additional weapons to blow your enemy out of the sky, or take the fight to them with a boarding party? This "spaceship simulation roguelike-like" allows you to take your ship and crew on an adventure through a randomly generated galaxy filled with glory and bitter defeat.

I don’t know much about this game and I have never played it, but I know it’s a classic and that it’s a classic for a reason. Definitely worth a try if you haven't yet.

    Cosmoteer - Early Access

Cosmoteer is a starship design, simulation, and battle game. Design a fleet of ships by placing individual modules including weapons, shields, engines, and hallways. Battle A.I. starships to earn bounties or test your design skills against other players. A dynamic crew and combat simulation make every design decision important and interesting.

This game is one of my recent favorite, hands down. I find the way how the shipbuilding and 2D elements blend to be thoroughly enjoyable. There is a large amount of flexibility when it comes to the construction of your ships and I find it deeply satisfying when I pit two of my creation against each other, using there A.I to efficiently decimate the other party. I highly recommend this game, whether you're into pitting your creations against other peoples ships or your own (or the bounty hunter campaign). Plus there's nothing to lose, it’s free!!! (There's also a relatively large modding community).

Players build space ships, space stations, planetary outposts of various sizes and use's, pilot ships and travel through space to explore planets and gather resources to survive.

I don’t have much to say on this title as I have played it only on occasion, it’s a very well know game with a good single player mode. The multiplayer has been notorious for its issues but it does work to some extent (from what I’ve seen) and it was known for its insanely long alpha period, but in total it’s apparently a really good game.

In No Man's Sky, every star is the light of a distant sun, each orbited by planets filled with life, and you can go to any of them you choose. Fly smoothly from deep space to planetary surfaces, with no loading screens, and no limits. In this infinite procedurally generated universe, you'll discover places and creatures that no other players have seen before - and perhaps never will again.

If you know anything about this game, you know about its horrendously rough start and while I wouldn't say all the hate the company was just, after twenty hours of playing I got bored and stopped. But while some of the responses were justified, Hello Games were able to truly turn their disaster around. Although I myself have barely played it since release I intend to soon, that's because in the years No Man’s Sky has been online Hello Game has been constantly updated. If you bought this game and have never looked at it since I highly suggest you give it another chance, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Kerbal Space Program - Fully Released

In Kerbal Space Program, take charge of the space program for the alien race known as the Kerbals. You have access to an array of parts to assemble fully-functional spacecraft that flies (or doesn’t) based on realistic aerodynamic and orbital physics. Launch your Kerbal crew into orbit and beyond (while keeping them alive) to explore moons and planets in the Kerbol solar system, constructing bases and space stations to expand the reach of your expedition.

K.S.P is another game I would have to list as a favorite game, simply because it is so difficult yet so fun, in all the 40 hours I’ve played I got nowhere, but I got nowhere with style. And I think that's what's so great about it, if you do dedicate time and effort you can go somewhere, you can go to many many where’s.  Whether you're a casual player that just wants to play in sandbox mode or colonies the solar system through dedication, this game deserves a look.

Team up to operate an advanced starship and explore a randomized galaxy falling into chaos. Each player assumes a role aboard the ship: Captain, Pilot, Scientist, Weapons Specialist and Engineer. Coordination between your crewmembers will be essential in order to survive the perils that await you.

I’ve been seeing the game on multiple sites like youtube for the past few years and it always caught my attention. I love the idea of having specialized roles and love how they have been able to recreate that ship on the frontier feel, with only yourself and your crewmates to rely on. If you like playing in friend groups, or just want to feel like you actually are controlling a ship, this game is for you.

This game started its development around the same time as the No Man’s Sky hype and sort of faded into the background, and although production continued the product today is quite controversial. Many of the players say that the game failed due to lag, mediocre updates, and eventual boredom while many others really like the game and still support it. In the long run I still see no issue in having NPCs of some sort. Before anyone rams their fist on the table and yells BUT SINGLE SHARD PLAYER DRIVEN [...] (I get that, been here long enough :D), I don't necessarily mean like in Star Citizen for example, where they actively plan NPCs not just to populate the verse and as friends foes and bystanders, and I don't mean like crew you can hire for your ships including turrets, repairs, etc.

I rather mean some kind of decorative function perhaps or really limited tasks. Of course a lot would have to be revised and considered later once more crucial aspects of the game are no longer under construction.

    Random thoughts:

    - decorative
have them sit in your houses or businesses, chatter, clean, do random or specific animations

    - vendor and more
Have them serve as shopkeepers or traders where players can buy / sell, not just from a terminal. This can make player shops more ... diverse or lively, opposed to a bunch of terminals standing there

    - limited support functions
The most controversial or perhaps initially ruled out, fill roles on a ship, maybe not necesasrily relating to active combat but maybe repairs or managing systems. But this is for the far future, if at all.

    - classic NPC roles from other games (PVE)
Populate the universe with certain NPCs who patrol, possibly have limited settlements somewhere as factions that can be wiped (or rebuilt?) by players or themselves and of course pirates in some areas, who attack anything. Since this is tied to a certain work effort development wise and was ruled out (afaik) due to the concept and pitch of the game, it's unlikely. But not necessarily ruled out for eternity, maybe it might change years down the line and it's simply thrown in here for the sake of completion. Just saying it might make some areas feel or be populated. We don't have to expect huge simulated growing and dying NPC factions by no means, but a few fluff trade ships or patrols around Alioth and towards the moons and planets and then maybe some pirates in fringe regions would not hurt anyone ... game concept wise I mean. Roughly think of EvE Online.

    Hi,
Im looking forward to enjoying my time in this game. I've been gaming since about 1994 in a wide variety of games.
I have mostly been a crafter/gatherer/builder in games and that will probably be my concentration in this game as well.
I am a middle aged male, living in Ohio, and on EST time. No distractions at home so plenty of game time when I'm off work.

Looking forward to learning about organizations and how we all get along(or dont) in this universe.
I'll be looking for an organization who fits my desired needs as i learn more about the game.

The reason why I think DU has the best chance of accomplishing it is because, unlike star citizen, they seemed to be heavily investing into game mechanics over  graphics: i hope they continue to do so. And also. I am here to get approved by a MOD so I can get access to that sweet NDA discord feed...... so help a bruther out.

I will not repeat the information earlier in this thread but we now have 36 members, both in Europe and the USA and we have an active discord channel and a helpful community. We have participated in some very interesting projects and you can see some of the videos on our community page here https://community.dualthegame.com/organization/infinity-corporation/#tab-posts

We have several other projects planned and our intention is to be an organization that expands what is doable in DU. We are looking for people with all sorts of skill sets, the most important thing is that you together with us want to go places and push the limits of what can be done.

If you have any questions or want to know more please send me a private message here on the DU site , you can of course also ask questions in our Discord Channel (invite on our website <https://www.infinitycorporation.org/> ).

I'm so tired of the shallow game play that comes with ftp and b2p  with their cash shops.  I want a game I can sink my teeth into long-term.  Without subs, the whole game is then designed to bring in cash shop sales, NOT into creating great game play. There are several MMOs out there with subs and most of them have been around for years because they work for the subscribers and do what makes US happy to keep us coming back.  f2p and cash shops make the devs work for the money men and their cash shop/lootbox scams.

Microtransactions can't sustain long term development, it would be a cat and mouse game of constantly trying to -

    1) Gain players
    2) Create new content to sell to players

Whereas DU is going to be a constantly evolving game, dedicating resources to creating new expansions on top of trying to push out constant microtransaction-backed content would be an uphill battle that would hurt everyone in the long run. It's hard enough for them to keep up development speed now with all of the resources they have.

A subscription allows them to have a solid metric on how much money they are bringing in every month and allows them the flexibility that the constant fluctuation of microtranscation-based income wouldn't give them.

People think servers are cheap, and of course someone is going to go to the AWS pricing page and try and point out "oh but you can get instances for dollars a month it can't be that expensive!" but running infra in AWS isn't cheap, it's just cheaper than building out a data center with all of your own hardware to maintain. NQ has really strict hardware and rack requirements that add to those costs (I was told it's more akin to a weather modeling supercomputer than a traditional gaming cluster), and as they scale up to match the needs of their growing player base it's only going to get more expensive over time. At a previous job we were spending $150k a month alone on our web frontend, and if you counted all of the other supporting infra we had for our product, it was something like $3.5 million a month, it wasn't cheap, it was just cheaper than the alternatives. Nobody is going to convince me that microtransactions are the way to go when you have to pay for infra, employees, long term development, support, offices, advertising, etc. This isn't Fortnite where the core game isn't changing and they are tweaking things from time to time while adding new items to their store, DU's development is on a whole other level from that.

Regardless of all of that, I think the bottom line here is that if you can't afford to pay $10-$15 a month for a game, then you need to reprioritize your hobbies (irrespective of the fact that DAC's allow people to play for free essentially).

Sigtyr got a reaction from blazemonger in How do you go about gifting the game?
This is getting more and more important as we are approaching beta, I have several friends and officers in my old guild that I would gift in to Beta if I could (and yes its about money too of course) But NQ is abandoning  a revenue stream here as anyone who get an paid invite to Beta is much likelier to keep playing the game. I and most would  not invest $ X into a friend and not make sure he/she stays in game.

With all of the information that needs to be managed, I think there's great opportunity to introduce something like a hand reader, or tool that manages and organizes the data.  In a typical MMO or fantasy game you couldn't get away with this, but in DU I think it fits the theme.  Such a handtool could initially manage things like distance from selected objects, altitude, compass direction (map features), gravity, and eventually be upgraded to manage velocity, thrust, (engineering reports), mass, lift, etc...  It could also eventually, or potentially integrate  mining tools, and provide a broader spectrum of information (direction of ore, size of ore, composition).  Such a handtool could potentially interface with other things like, the territory scanner.  It could also include chip upgrades, like enhanced performance in certain areas (mining, flight, voxelmancy), or provide variation on HUDs.

I'd like to be able to select what data I see on my HUD/GUI.

LUA would certainly add a level of customization to such a handtool.

My suggestion is that such a tool be integrated into the storyline, as a sort of introductory quest (starter tutorial) where a new player has to retrieve their data tool, and that walks them through some initial data management, and basic tool usage.

Based on what we know from dev blogs and official YT videos, the voxels in DU are smaller then Space engineers and (I think) Empyrion.  So that allows for more detail.  But more importantly DU's voxels can take on far more advanced shapes.  I haven't played Empyrion or Space engineers but from what I've seen it looks like you're sort of limited to building one block at a time, like Minecraft, except with more advanced block shapes.

With DU's voxel engine, you are still working with voxels, which are essentially blocks.  But each voxel has the potential to take on thousands of different shapes, and using the building tools you can create large custom shapes like spheres, curves and slopes, made up of many voxels working together.

The building tools you can see in use in the YT videos are still an early version too, and will hopefully be improved a lot in the future.  There isn't anything like a "bevel" tool yet.  But it's conceivable that you could create a curved shape using the sphere tool, and then copy/paste a piece of it over and over to create a straight bevel.

The voxels in DU probably have the potential to create a ship just like the one in your picture, it's just a matter of figuring out how to get the voxels into that shape.
