Viking Company is a small R&D group focusing on fields of engineering that push the limits of human expansion throughout the cosmos.
It consists of five non-subsidiary branches focusing on various fields of engineering:
VC-Shipyards: Our first branch, dedicated to the design and construction of specialized craft, with a focus on long term use and reliability
VC-Communications: The first thing a new colony needs is a stable line of communication, so this branch is dedicated to developing long range comm systems and scanning equipment
VC-Logistics: This branch is dedicated to the rapid deployment base systems as well as the transit of supplies to and from bases and fleets, as well as the development of efficient resource acquisition and processing systems.
VC-Military: Once a base or colony is established, it may have to defend itself from various external threats. The military branch is responsible for solving these practical problems.
VC-Operations: The trunk, if you will. Operations is responsible for keeping the other branches functioning, as well as deploying our completed tech to advance our own processes. We won't use another's product over our own!
As a neutral entity, Viking Company strives only to support the growth of all of humanity across the cosmos. As such it will hold no political standing or allegiance, and will only contractually serve other organizations on special projects. It's branches are non-subsidiary, existing as non-autonomous groups within the company that have a specific field of research and design, the only exception to this is operations which does no research, but keeps all projects afloat.
Viking Company is Headquartered on it's flagship the VCS-Bregdhafni, a heavy hauler modified to serve as the nomadic HQ until the colony of Grimheim can be properly established.

Fishyy reacted to Lord_Void in Do you play EVE Online?
I play EVE and I love EVE, but I don't want this to be an EVE clone.

That being said, EVE is also fairly similar to what this game looks to be (single shard, revolving around spaceships, sandbox game, player driven economy) so a lot of people use EVE as a reference point for how systems should/would work. EVE has also solved a lot of issues/ideas already, so there isn't a huge need to reinvent the wheel for some areas. In addition, many systems are being taken directly from EVE (skill system, market system, combat system, account structure).

Hello High Arbiter Maxim and welcome to the forums.

I'd like to give you two answers for your questions, the first being the short one:

    Yes you can.

The second one being the long version. I'd like to tell you how I as legate of a ship building corporation see the game, how the current situation in the community is and what is planned for the game in that aspect. I think that will answer all the concerns that lie beyond your questions.

I'm director of the currently second largest  third largest by now industrial corporation in the community, focusing in ships and hovercrafts. We have established our own internal 'hierarchy' and structure for the corporation, so there's leadership positions, different roles to fill and multiple branches and divisions. Over the past year, we have expanded this structure a lot and we're still not done. We have thought about a lot of mechanics to pay members / employees and reward them, how we track internal progression and how we delegate tasks and work. The system has become quite thorough by now and we can surely say there's a certain depth behind it.

We're one of around 4, maybe 5 larger corporations that are generally known in the community. In order to rise attention, we publish advertising, we post messages on community boards and discord servers and we show presence wherever we can. Naturally, also in order to recruit more members because there's a good amount of competition.
When we get applications, we usually receive them from a form on our website. We read through them and sometimes decide to invite these applicants to a voice interview on our Discord server where we explain how the corporation works and what they can do in our corporation. Logistics are one of many possibilities, we have one of three branches dedicated to logistics, production (or assembly in your case) and resources. The other branches are dedicated to military defense and research and development.

As there are many organizations in the community, there's also always multiple orgs of the same kind. There are several nations, several corporations, several communities, it's rare for an org to be the only one of its kind. For this reason, it's especially difficult to establish something like a monopoly. There might me a market leader or a nation with the largest military, but there is always competition from many sides, even outside their own category. New organizations and with them new competition are created on a daily basis. Feel free to give it a shot on your own, as long as you are dedicated enough I'm content you can end up among the top few corporations as an early member of DU. The market is completely open and completely fair so far, it's a chance you can take. If you do, I wish you best of fun with it.

Ultimately, it is exactly as you say or expect. NQ's vision of the game only supports this.

    Aliens would be cool.

What if we eventually came across some sort of Type III (Kardashev scale) class alien that purposely caused the demise of Earth because they wanted to "test" us?  So they may not be necessarily bent upon our destruction... but want to see what we can be capable of?

The idea that im proposing here is that elements have a chance of breaking down the more they get used. So, every (arbitrary time) the machine gets used the chance of the machine stopping to function increases by a very small amount, but over time, the machine would become very unreliable, and it takes people with skills requirw to create the element to fix. Some benefits of this system would be:

Nerfed automation: Due to parts breaking down, you cant just leave your fully automated factory alone 24/7 and "self contained" systems that tries to do everything will need large amounts of skilled personal to maintain. This allows expanded programming/automation capablities without disruption of balance. (And yes, I want to make Skynet, CaptainTwerkMotor)

    Jobs: Spacecraft mechanics!

Logistics: Militaries and companies will need logistics trains to maintain their equipment. With logistics comes a entirely new aspect of operations. This also can be used as a substitute to survival mechanics. "Amateurs talk about tactics, professionals talk about logistics."

So will you guys be adding anything in terms of CCTV cameras, so if someone wanted to add a security station in their facility, they could place cameras to watch over their facility from one room? Also, do you guys have an estimate on the system requirements yet? Great work on the game so far I can't wait to play!
