  1. It seems to me that the ship sizes I have been building will be easily doable for a solo player. However the spacestation size helps to showcase why we will need to be working together to make large structures...there is simply no way one person could build something that massive, detailed, and fully functional in a short period of time. I would say that space station would take at least a year to fully flesh out with working elements for one person and that does not include faming.

I am impressed to say the least.

  2. I think, Pirate Smuggler friend, you underestimate my capacity to disengage and disassemble all vestiges and signs of your countermeasures!

Can you hear them, they talk about me telling lies well that's no surprise. Can you see them, see right through them. They have no shield no secrets to reveal. It doesn't matter what they say, in the jealous games people play...my lips are sealed.

  3. Well, I am someone. That's why I enrolled in COPS: for "teamwork, fun and the Alioth dream."

I don't want pay. I don't need incentive beyond having fun, altruism and enjoying the beauty of the created constructs to grind resources for Builders I like.

    That's what friends are for.

GGAghhdhAHHgh.....I really REALLY wanted to like this post...but ran out of likes.

  4. I'm right there with you Dhara. I imagine a lot of the time I'll be happily minding my own business, building, trading goods, services, resources and technology with fellow COP'ers, and other free spirited merchants, and probably stealing some of Kiklix's spaceships, but if someone crosses my path in the wrong way, or troubles one of my kin, then I'll gleefully turn my dark pirate side on and have a little fun.

All my ships have countermeasures that will blow the ship up if they are stolen! Do not steal my ships, or your will be stealing your life.

  5. Welcome to the Dual forums! Nice to see people invest some RP time. Always makes things more immersive.

This week Dual will mostl ikely be showcasing game play footage, a first! So keep your eyes peeled. Follow them on twitter or follow me or follow someone as they will tweet it out. Or their facebook page or keep the forums refreshed. Wont want to miss it!

  6. Little hint: list a fictional organizations from books, movies and so on, which are your inspiration :) We - members - can list ours "dream orgs" and compose some core set of ideas :)

And core codex - our funding rules /code of conduct - will be nice thing, I totally second that idea :)

I have 3 videos showcasing "alignment"  on the original write up on the first page in this thread.  :D

A Codex would be cool. I just need some time to write it up and lay it out. Been busy with other projects lately.

  7. Depends on whether you're on our good side or not-so-good side . But to reiterate, we're good guys, unless you cross the wrong side of us, then you might find yourself hounded across the Universe  :P .

I would say we are more neutral guys than good guys. If I had to make an "organization alignment" it would probably be "Neutral good" with some activities leaning towards "Neutral evil". But this is an off the top of my head thought. I'll have to think about it deeper...and as an organization it's something we should vote on.

  8. I understand the need to create team play in an MMO, but there are times when people will want to play when others are not online. Unless organizations can be run by the thousands, some might suffer with not enough people to go out and do the hazardous chores like farming. There has to be some form of constructive entertainment to offer people who at times simply do not have anyone to play with.

  9. And how will allowing for "freeform" travel accommodate the immersion of having worlds feel alive, if everyone can just immediately fly off into deep space without ever needing to interact with another player? If everyone can just have their own planet without any real effort, there won't be any of that immersion.

I never debated this, or care to. I simply answered your question as to why people like to play solo in MMO's.

  10. The solo players ought to be even more well off then, in terms of immersion. If you were to consider the real world, a single person in most cases is not going to be able to get very far in anything just by him/herself. The same carries over here. This is an MMO, a massively multiplayer online game, designed to facilitate and encourage interaction and sociality. There is absolutely no problem in players enjoying a lone wolf playstyle in MMOs, but the MMO at its core is not designed to cater to these solo players.

I never said or implied that working with other people is not more immersive. I simply gave an fairly obvious answer to the question as to why people like to play solo in an MMO, which is their choice and is not right or wrong. As far as to why a game developer should offer enough content for these solo players, that is an easy answer as well. It makes the developer more money though a larger player base.

  11. I have never understood people who pay to subscribe to an MMO game just to play by themselves.

That is an easy answer. I have come across countless numbers of people who prefer to play solo in MMO's. The reason they like the MMO atmosphere is because the MMO worlds feel alive with real people running around. Single player games do not offer this. People essentially want to be around other people even if they are not interacting with them. Essentially it bolsters immersion.

It's no different than going out on a Friday night to a dinner and movie with a significant other or a buddy.

  12. It's actually an idea I got from watching Scott Manley videos of Eve Online.  His premise is that piracy keeps the economy going by enhancing the flow of resources.  When wealth and assets accumulate in the hands of a few individuals or organizations, the pirates come in and "liberate" those assets so that they can be used by the broader community.  So basically it's an essential service - and it adds conflict, motivation and FUN to the game.

I think you are going to be our ambassador. :D

  13. From one noob to another WELCOME!

I agree that there needs to be some healthy skepticism regarding any project that offers soo much that players want, and I think the general consensus is cautious optimism.  There was actually a series of videos done by BlueDrake42 questioning the promotional material for the game but in the end he had to kind of eat his own words.  Here's his final rant on where he's at so far... (he eats quite a bit of crow in this)

(not sure what the rules are for posting videos here but I do believe this is relevant)

Personally I would delete the video. That guy is not worth any of our time nor deserves the views as he cares nothing about facts.

Did Novaquark import a mesh: Yes. E3 came up fast and they needed to make a video. A hand built voxel ship can take months to build. Note the picture below. This took me a total of about 3 months with all the materials already farmed. Also note,  they still had to hand polish the mesh because the fine details did not take.

Does this mean that we can't make ships as cool as  the one shown in the video? No, we can make way cooler ships and buildings.

Is Novaquark being misleading in that video? Yes, only because the imported mesh does not even come close to showing what will be achievable in game. Players will make ships that make that mesh model look junky, I have no doubt about this absolutely NO doubt!

Why did they use a mesh? Because every tool that places voxels in the game is a mesh. When you place a cube, its a mesh of a cube. When you make a blueprint, its a mesh of your voxel build. When you place a sphere, its a mesh of a sphere. This is how they are able to make tools that scale up or down. There is nothing subversive about using a mesh in the game.

The fact that bluedrake42 had to make fun of Nyzaltars English is proof of the immaturity this person exudes. Novaquark is from France, last I checked they speak French. I guarantee everyone on these forums that Nyzaltars English is 100000000x better than Bluedrake42's French.

  14. I like to think of myself as a Privateer in a coalition of like-minded individuals.  Our role (as I see it) is to keep balance in the Universe acting as independent operators smuggling goods, and providing services when needed, and "distributing" the wealth when it becomes too concentrated in for form of piracy (like futuristic Robin Hoods).

The beauty of this idea is that within this cooperative people can play the game any way they want, and even change roles without abandoning the core principals of the group.  Tell me if I'm wrong...

You are right on target....and you described it very well. With your permission I might use your description in our write up to help convey  the message in a more appropriate way.

  15. It's all about image, my dear Kiklix. Surely we wouldn't want to discourage or intimidate new players with such a projection of grand piracy and smuggling as COPS so happens to create?

How very ironic. When people have a choice, they gravitate towards the one with a net benefit for themselves. Cinderfall is able to provide that. Welcome to the Syndicate, newbies.

    :P

Only the selfish and narcissistic care about image. The real people crave substance. The salt of the old Earth, the disenfranchised, the torn and wounded...they all see that 'Grand' organization Cinderfall for what it is, perpetual enslavement on humanity.

This is the new world, this is the time of the free people, this is the fight that pirates, smugglers, ninjas, mercenaries, outcasts and farmers take up to proclaim their independence against the syndicate and that is something only COPS can deliver!

Welcome to the free world my friends, welcome to the Coalition of Pirates & Smugglers!
