  1. The purpose isn't to block someone from a marketplace (even though that is exactly what is happening) but to make it inconvenient. To make it feel as if they are not wanted here and should just give up and go somewhere else. Early on in the game or in areas where certain services are sparse this tactic could be very effective since it could require a big sink of time or resources just to go to another planet or system to access another service. Of course, later on, or in high-density locations, this might be ineffective since you might just need to cross the street (into another hex) to be able to use those same services. Who's to say the ripple effects this could have if the owner of one hex were to try and influence a nearby hex to convince them to restrict the criminal's access so as to better enforce their will. Maybe a bruised ego, maybe the final straw on the road to war. Then again, there is always the underground and black markets that will inevitably pop up. It might cost you a little more, but if it is worth it, then you'll reason with yourself appropriately. Check that, this is of convenience and value. Some people value their time or quanta and don't want to see it go to waste, they might submit and turn themselves in while others could give two shlacks and run since they have all the time and quanta in the world. This is all in a game, yes, but time can be a tangible item. How much value do you place on it?
  2. The difference is this stuff glows like a nuclear reactor when held up to sunlight so the stuff is grown underground and away from prying eyes. Exhibit A:
  3. I wouldn't be surprised if organizations websites lacked SSL. Most of our websites like my own (eyesandearsrescue.org) are mostly just informational with minimal user input, aside from a forum and even a blog. Of course, with major players like Googles search engine and its Chrome browser pushing for higher standards, this add-on is being pushed more and more. My host offers a year of free SSL and I've even heard of some companies like Comodo offering a free certificate though I'm not entirely sure if that provides the same certs as paid certificates. As others have said, you can always find them on the community site and join that way as well.

  6. I honestly wouldn't mind 2FA and even U2F which I'd really love to get into but I don't think is supported across a majority of sites I frequent.
  7. Well of course not, but if I was a bad actor intent on disrupting those of high level, I'd be well on the lookout for those protective bubbles. It's hard to find one person among a mass of citizens even if they're less protected but then again you'd have to consider the plain clothed secret service that might be embedded all around. A big boulder among a rock field is easy to see but hard to crack, but have you ever found a needle in a haystack? Hey that kind of rhymed. But I probably should have been a little more precise. I wasn't looking at the leaders at the tip top (of course they'd be more visible given their high profile), more like those in the middle-ish area. City leaders, advisors and such. It's your city, run things how you wish.
  8. This sounds like the labor pains of a caste system. Emergency services and military permits are understandable because it demands fast response, people in direct service of the government however should serve the people so that would reasonably put them at the same level as the general public. Then again maybe your style of government and mine are different. Just a passing thought.
  9. I think he looks better clean shaven, like a modern JC. Speaking of that, someone slap some sunglasses on him!
  10. We'll get more info on that when the summer plans are laid out but since we're still in the early weeks, its hard to tell you when alpha will be scheduled. For lack of a better estimate, it happens when it happens, though I'm sure we'll know plenty in advance.
  11. If you're making multiple attempts, I'd make sure that charges aren't being applied to your account in case they're going through but you're not seeing anything on your end.
  12. Consoles are just too weak, on top of that it would require either an entirely new team to port the game to consoles, or have the current staff (30-odd-some ) split their time among the two which simply wouldn't be feasible. Considering nentindos family orientated history, I personally doubt this would happen for the switch or any future nentindo console. If you want mobile portability, your best bet would be a laptop specifically for gaming. I'm no expert on these laptops, but I would call into question their upgradeability. And if even that isn't an option, geforcenow would probably be your best bet though I fear its eventual subscription-based service would mean that you'd be better off, in the long run, getting a gaming laptop.
  13. The only best way I can see to have water in the game aside from the water layer we have in planets is to have water simply be invisible, a number, a calculation if you will. We don't need to see water to see the effects of water. It's much like with fuel in a fuel tank, you don't see it when you're driving on the road, but you know that it's working since you're going somewhere. Say you have a lake and a water storage unit and you're by a large body of water. You can build a series of pipes off one of the storage inlets into the water, then push a button and the tank will fill with water. Deconstruct the pipes and take off. You now have a container full of water and did not see any water physically move from one location to the other. The only other overhead would be the end of the pipe needing to be below the surface of the water for it to collect water which my simple mind can imagine wouldn't be too hard to do. Or would it?... Now let's say you want to move that water from the storage tank into a holding tank used to cool an engine or some other heat producing but intolerant component. Connect the two tanks together, and when the engine component reaches a certain temperature, a certain amount of water flows from the storage tank and cools the engine down to a certain temperature. Again, we didn't see the water doing anything physically complex, but we can see that it is still doing something.
  14. This is probably the best answer I've heard to date regarding what I like to call the "Austrailian Ping Problem".
  15. Threads don't automatically lock after a set amount of time, I believe some forum software does do this but not IvC. I like paying only once for a video game, then I get to keep it forever just so long as the disk still functions and the console can still read. If this is something you are concerned about, however, some people are suggesting we are only one or two generations away from stream-only games where you don't own the game, just the hardware it runs on. This recent article might prove an interesting read. We're still in pre-alpha, far from finished, unless you implied something different? Did you quote my e n t i r e post just for this? Please delete that quote mate, yikes. If anybody has any other ideas on what small things they could alter in their life to pay for a DAC, ping me and I'll add it to the OP! o/
  16. Love me a binary system. I know I have it in my tickets since I remember reporting it when it first occurred. I'll throw up a support ticket.
  17. Quite lovely, but you do know that the dual stars are a bug right? I don't think they've bothered fixing it since so many think its novel considering our real-life Sol.
  18. It is a risk that we all take. Out in the real world, I'd bet that we would give our fellow human the benefit of the doubt, especially considering real life has pretty real consequences that are much more impactful than any single video game (losing a gargantuan amount of ISK is another story). In a video game, the lines are much more blurred since the tangible consequences are so far detached. Fortune favors the bold, but it can also lead to their demise.
  19. Oh boy, let me grab my twirly fire stick!
  20. Well this was an interesting read and I'm sorry I didn't inject myself earlier when the conversation was more active. As the founder of what I can only presume is DU's first rescue focused service organization (Eyes and Ears), I've been debating this internally myself. I hope to keep things simple. Our main focus is on people who are stranded from all semblance of civilization and are unable to continue, maybe they're out of fuel, crashed into a rock and destroyed their engines, or some other multitude of problems that can occur in the great void. Whatever the reason, they are stuck and respawning is just not a desirable form of recourse. They call us, we find them, and bring them home, and that is my purpose in a nutshell. In situations where two sides are engaged, I have always thought it best to stand back from the situation and wait until both sides disengage before doing anything. This would be fine if it were just man on man engagements, but with multiple players and multiple constructs, my purpose seems less relevant. A group of people can be far more resourceful if they put their heads and resources together than just a single person and whatever they happen to have brought along with them. I've found that in the real world, you can have all the resources of survival around you, but if you're not smart enough to know how to use them then it wouldn't matter how big your group is. These groups of combatants most likely have organizations behind them that know of the situation and are ready to deal with it, thus nullifying the necessity to present ourselves on a large battlefield. I would hope our neutrality and purpose would act as a better shield against those who would think it fit to stymie our progress, but as many have said before when another human is involved, you just won't truly know the outcome until the first shot is fired, or you return home safely. This uncertainty, of course, would provide a great reason to hire an armed escort. In the best of times, I would hope to never have to invest in weapons to protect my crews and assets, although it might prove foolish to do so. At most I would only hope to need light weaponry to discourage any lone pirate or petty thief while leaving the more hefty weapons to my escorts, but of course, pirates never travel alone. As far as retaliation would ever go, the worst result would simply wouldn't render our services to an aggressor (and/or their org) and possibly any associates. If those associates of that person/organization just so happen to utilize our services, we might hope that they could turn the screws to pressure the aggressor to make reparations, but that would be all a shot in the dark. With the alliances I hope to make with my organization around an effective mass of suppliers, crafters, coders, haulers, and various other purpose-built organizations to act as a mini-coalition of sorts to further dissuade any harmful or destructive interaction. With my plans to spread all throughout the universe as the community expands the game world, I'd most likely end up with multiple organizations that serve the same purpose, but just happen to work in different parts of the universe. As someone best put it earlier, don't attack us since you might find great use out of our service, or do attack and be locked out of many other services and shunned the community. Indeed, a real balancing act. I hope there's a safety net. I'd also like to add, if you want to get in touch with me regarding my organization, you can PM me here, or find me in the unofficial community discord @DarkHorizon
  21. I'll emphasize this last part as well as it is an excellent point. Straight from our websites Anytime Anywhere page: While we do not necessarily run on shifts, that's not to say that you might not be left for stretches at a time not doing anything for our organization. You are either doing something, or you are doing absolutely nothing. There is pretty much no middle ground. Relevant members (rescuers, supervisors, etc) will be called up as things happen while they are playing DU and/or are presently online (ex: Discord) but are free to reject if they lack the time or ability to do so. Another key player, the dispatcher will always have an ear in our Discord listening for any emergencies as they come in so good multitasking skills if you intend to play at the same time would be a real help here. And as for our spreadsheet managing positions, I don't know if they're always crunching numbers like in EVE, but these roles will most likely be either slow or non-existent until we start branching out into other planets and systems.
  22. Reserved for future use. Feel free to post.
  23. Organization Name: Eyes & Ears - Search and Rescue Website: eyesandearsrescue.org Discord: https://discordapp.com/invite/ETk5ubw Mission: "Achieve the preservation of life when found in dire straights" Allegiance: Neutral, with a slight lawful bend Gameplay: Semi-casual, yet can be active at a moment’s notice Roleplay: Freely allowed Currently Recruiting: All Positions When you're out in the void of space, alone and unsure and in need of help, who do you turn to? Many would say "your organization", and that is very much correct. Most organizations are like family units, all of its members looking out for each other. Family can be fickle though. Do you have the biggest organization of them all? You're only one person and bound to get overlooked. Is your organization made of thieves and pickpockets? They'll come after you when it suits them best. Does your organization cover a vast swath of stars? They'll come after you, once they get out of their own territory. Is your organization tirelessly working on greater and better things? They'll get to you, right after their current job is finished. These organizations, great as they might be, may not lack the familial tightness that holds a family together. If a child wanders, its mother will instinctively pursue, but if a member of an organization finds themselves stranded in space, will their organization put everything on hold and pursue them? Enter Eyes and Ears - Search and Rescue. Our sole devotion is to bring lost Noveans back to civilization. If our purpose hasn't yet been betrayed, we are in the broadest of terms, a rescue organization. Why Rescue? While Resurrection Nodes can return you to familiar territory and Blueprints might be handy to reconstruct your lost ship, we can all probably agree that some things just aren’t worth loosing. Maybe you put a lot of time into your ship and can't afford to rebuild it? Perhaps that ship is made of or carries a lot of resources which may or may not be particularly rare? Did you acquire your ship through questionable means while knowing that you would most certainly lose it if you abandoned it? Were you on a supply run and made a risky jump knowing your fuel was low? Was a vital element damaged in flight and now you are as spaceworthy as an asteroid? Does an item in your personal inventory make a forced respawn too much of a risk to chance loosing? These are the problems we aim to solve. Who we are looking for We have a variety of positions need filling by a variety of different people. From people who are active in discord that can act as dispatchers, to pilots experienced in commanding various craft, spreadsheet workers who can keep our data organized. We are also looking for organizations who would like to affiliate with us. If you provide some sort of service that you think would be useful to our organization and those that we serve, please send me a private message. How our affiliates will work is by getting a direct referral from us to everyone we provide our services to in exchange for our customers receiving a discount on your services. Our affiliates will also work with us since we will come to them first with our own needs (of which there may be many) in exchange for a discount on their service given our direct connection. All the details on these positions and more can be found on our websites hiring page. Speaking of website You can find it at eyesandearsrescue.org Originally almost 3,000 words, I've moved much of my post that would have gone here onto my organizations' website so as to keep this post a bit tidier. This post is more so meant to give a brief introduction rather than a full and complete overview. If you would like to join You can find us here on the community page. Eyes and Ears Community Page Join our Discord here. Eyes and Ears Discord If you have questions I implore you to please ask them. Not only will it help others who view this thread, but it will help others who view my F.A.Q page in the future. The only dumb question is a question never asked. If you need to contact me directly You can either private message me here on the forums, or ping me on the Unofficial DU Community Discord @DarkHorizon.
