So, no space lasers shooting people across systems?

What about mass projectiles? Am I going to be able to strap some engines on asteroids and point them at my enemies from outside their system?

Minecraft disagrees. Crafting / building games are absolutely popular and one of the largest genres in recent years.

Looking around at many people's ideas on here , I think one thing we need is binding contracts.

Hire a bounty hunter to take out that pesky pirate? You need a contract.
Hiring a miner to get that awesome ore? Contract.
Negotiating a treaty between two warring factions? Contract.

The contracts could have automatic rewards/consequences like pay, rewards, penalties for breaking the contract, etc. They need to be flexible though so the players can make them to suit whatever needs arise.

    Man after my own heart.

If you want a big driver for conflict between players, then you need only create zones of rare resources (and limited). Limitation can either be how many are spawned in the universe, or how much can be harvested before it dries out. This then forces players to fight one another for control over said resource if either wants to progress forward in their expansion, technology or what have you.

Sure it might stink for people that don't want to fight at first, but isn't the whole point of a game like this that the players come up with solutions to problems, not artificial rules?

If there were a bunch of organizations and governing bodies competing for resources and territory in space there would be fights and the fights wouldn't be limited to some special grid in space where fights are allowed to happen. If I want to play a space pirate robbing the poor unsuspecting miner who doesn't have any defenses I should be able to. Playing a space pirate is no better or worse than a miner. Next time the miner goes out he'll put more consideration into his safety. If you didn't put thought into who has access to your most vital secrets and resources and I infiltrate your organization, I should be able to bring the whole thing down. That's just the way it goes.

Then, people who want to mine could have hire factions to protect them, of course for a price.

You can thank me for that idea   To expand on what was just said I will add to it that this could make galactic E-Sports a thing WITHIN a game. Virtual reality can also serve the function of any other wacky mini game that just wouldn't make sense in the main universe. The game itself is one giant story that every player gets to take part in. The more it feels like a second life the better.

I think bounty would make a great mechanic to counter people who like to be mean for no reason.

I was thinking about this today, and thought it would be cool to have a bounty system in place, where if I come harass you, killing and destroying your stuff, you could put a bounty on me.  There would be PvP driven players that would love to hunt these players down and collect that bounty, just for the satisfaction of doing it.  The game could also include a finders fee, for other players to report where these targets are located.

what would be cool is if enough bounties made you fair game to be attacked in a safe zone as well.  And also if there was a system to give titles, or other non monetary awards to good bounty hunters.

i dont think there should be skyboxes, as someone already said, the sky isnt colorful, and most pictures of nebular are colored after they were taken because they just don't emit light in the visible spectrum.
I do hope we will have some nebular to actually explore them and thus see them in the night sky, but i wouldn'twant artifical textures of things that aren't present.

caravaggio2000 got a reaction from Code24 in Death and consequences
That's the problem though isn't it? Once you get powerful enough, there is no consequence.

Example: Hamster Group makes a large dreadnought and equips it with a resurrection pod. They go happily attacking knowing they will resurrect right in the middle of the battle where as their opponent  (if not so equipped) has to fly back from the middle of the galaxy.

Example: Hamster Group puts a resurrection pod in the middle of their base. No matter how hard Gerbil Group tried to take them out, they never can because the Hamster are respawning back in their own base, in the middle of the battle, and getting right back to it where the Gerbils have to fly back.

What about no death penalty to start, then a time out penalty for the middle levels, and then permadeath if you are at the cap?

I was wondering what people's thoughts were on death and consequences in the game. When you die, should you just respawn somewhere with no consequences? Should your ship blow up and be left to rubble?

Personally, I like the idea of permadeath, but I know many won't.

Or just leave the entire process of territory taking, holding, and claiming to the players and not have any features that could be potentially limiting.

Hey! I spent half of yesterday discovering and reading about this game.

I had been looking at EVE, but wished there was a way to get in on the ground floor. This sounds like ti might be a better option for me. The only sandbox I've played is SW: Galaxies, but I loved it, especially early on. I'm a big RPG fan and have enjoyed some MMOs (SWG, Vanguard, SW:TOR, etc.) I always had this daydream about how I would set up a MMO and this sounds a lot like it, so I'm pretty excited.

Anyway, looking forward to contributing to the discussion.
