    Hi everyone,

Here are a few answers related to Land ownership

What do you plan to do in the case of a massive "landgrab" at the game launch?   The possibility of a massive landgrab right from the start is a concern we are working on.  This is indeed a recurrent problem for any Open World MMO giving the opportunity for a player to own some land. We are currently thinking about limitating (at least at the beginning) the area size owned by each player (or each account). That combined to the total surface of the starting planet (see below for the planet size) should be enough to start with.   Do you plan to limit surface for housing on planets?   We don't see why there should be a limit to housing. Look at Coruscant in Star Wars: it's an example of a planet entirely covered with buildings. Beside that, it's important to keep in mind that outside the Arkship Secure Area, there will be possibilities of building destruction, even if you will be able to set a small "indestructible" area to have a safe haven somewhere.   How big the universe will be?   It's a procedurally generated universe, so expanding the universe will be faster than creating planets one by one: - During the Alpha, it will probably a few planets (to be able to test space travel) - At the release: probably a few hundreds of planets to a few thousands (difficult to say exactly right now)   How big planets will be?   It may still be subject to change but we plan the following: - Around 100km diameter for the starting planet (which is equal to a bit more than 30000 km2. Even with oceans and seas, the remaining surface for land will still be incredibly huge!) - Probably around 50km diameter for others (even if we are aiming for an average 100km for a planet on the long term)   Will we be able to go to every planet, or only specific ones the devs specify?   If you're weren't able to go explore each planet or asteroid belt we put in this universe, this wouldn't be a true sandbox in our opinion.  So yes, you will be able to explore every single planet existing in the game. No limitation for exploration.    Best Regards, Nyzaltar.

    Hi there!

Having battle scars or prosthetic limbs through cosmetic items is something we are going to think about after the official release.
There is a high chance this will be on our todo list as well
About having a Third Person View Mode, we are aware this is something wanted by... a lot of people.
It will probably not be implemented for the Alpha, or even the Beta, but that may be a stretch goal for the official release, in the upcoming crowdfunding campaign early next year

    Hi ReadyForTheGame,

Well, as Beta won't be before end of 2016... it's a bit too soon to give details on it.

    What is clear for now:
    - Alpha will be indeed mostly for backers/supporters/founders, helping us in a crowdfunding campaign.
But it might be also possible to get access for very active community helpers. We haven't decided yet the prerequisites, nor even confirm it will indeed be possible. But we will keep you informed as the situation evolve.
    - There will a closed Beta and an open Beta, that's also quite sure. About the modalities to get access, this is also still in discussion. And it won't be defined before we define all the modalities for Alpha access.

However, we want to be clear on one thing:
Alpha & Closed Beta Access are meant to help us building the game by giving feedback and reporting bugs. While a lot of game companies see Beta phase as some advertisement stunt and marketing strategy, we think differently, or more precisely we think the old way: As Alpha, Closed Beta has mainly a role to improve the game experience. It's not meant to just play the game sooner. While we completely understand that members of the community are eager to play the game as much as we are, if some are not interested in testing or bug reporting (which can be - and we agree - a very tedious task but a necessary one), then the Open Beta will be the most appropriate first experience to discover the game.

Gathering all the discussion in one place is indeed vital to avoid missing interesting ideas.
As you may have already realized, since the opening of the forum, each DevBlog post contains a button at the end redirecting to the forum.
The comments have been disabled on the DevBlog for the same reason: we want to centralize all comments, suggestions and critics on the forum

    Hi Kiklix and PetdCat,
    Thanks for your feedback!

Indeed communication is a tricky thing and should be constant, but should also be graduated according to the situation: it's important to listen to all feedback, but it's also important to bring extra attention and communication to those who back a game project. That's just common sense. Furthermore, social medias are good to attract people that might be interested by a project, but not the best way to discuss extensively about it. This is more a "one way communication": even if it is possible to discuss with the community on it, forums are more suited for long, detailed discussions. Social medias and forums are complementary.

About putting the game on Steam: even if it's planned in the long run, that won't be before the Alpha version being polished (and therefore having a solid Beta version).

I think the crowdfunding route is perfect. What PetDcat said is true about landmark. As long as you are able to communicate to your fan base you will be fine but if not then issues can stir.

One thing I have noticed about landmark is that a lot of people do not like the main communication to be on social media outside of the official forums. That makes sense, people come to official forums to get news updates etc, its a logical flow for the process.

Figured i'd say hi. Can't wait to see this game in action and mess with the limits of its building tools. Also i cant wait to see the things others will make.

True, there is a part of the gameplay that look similar, but also many differences between the two projects.
    - Shores of Hazeron has a simcity-like aspect that Dual Universe hasn't: When you build a city in Dual Universe, it will be the help of your friends, and your friends alone will inhabit it. There won't be any NPCs citizens spawning automatically (though you will be able to craft mechanical helpers for automatized and/or industrial tasks). Seeing each player becoming a mayor, governor or emperor is not in the Dual Universe game vision. There will certainly be emperors, but there will be very few: only players who manage to gather around them a huge amount of friends will be considered as "emperors". This won't be a status you will be able to have from the start, or even in the first months of play.
    - As Dual Universe is voxel-based, it will enable the player to build a spaceship (or a base) from scratch in a more intuitive manner while offering a lot more possibilities to shape the construction. This will be the "Minecrafty" part and it won't count as a small part of the gameplay - There will be a territory system that will impact a lot on where you can build/install your base. A bit like Sov System from EvE Online but on a planetary scale (where EvE is on a solar system scale).
    - There is a lot more gameplay features we can't communicate on right now, because it's too early.

But the truth is: Minecraft and EvE Online have been the two main inspirational models.
We try to get the best of the two in Dual Universe.

    Hi Kiklix!

You're totally right. The smaller the voxels are, the more performance issues you have.
We had to make some tough choices, and we think we have come to a good compromise:
    - Voxels on any planet will have a size around 100 centimeters.
    - Constructs made by players will be composed with 25 centimeters Voxels permitting better precision.
Granted, this is still bigger than Landmark, but in exchange you have mobile constructs
And for the planets, well, you will have some up to 100 km radius (which means a bit more than 125 000 km2 !)

Exactly. Landmark is nice, but building something always leaves me feeling empty because it serves no purpose. This is where Dual Universe takes the ball and will make touchdown after touchdown (note: I really have no interest in sports). I can't wait to be a part of this exciting community. I love the art DU is producing and happy to see another sci fi voxel game.

    Hi Ai Austin,

As it is planned to use Dual Contouring for primitive shapes built with voxel tools, the result should be far from a lego/minecraft-style and a lot more realistic.
A few games already use this technology. We can't show you some screenshots from the game yet, to illustrate voxel tool descriptions. But it will be posted in time

    Hi Astrov,

Yes, Alpha release has been postponed:
We want to provide a meaningful experience for Dual Universe Alpha testers.
And while the game has evolved a lot until now, it seems to us that we won't have a version that we estimate satisfactory enough to be released (even with a restricted access). Updating our roadmap with this in mind is currently in progress. As soon as more information will be available for the Alpha release, you will be informed.

    Hello Everyone,

Comrademoco here, just wanted to stop-by and introduce myself, give a little background on who I am, maybe about my gaming community/guild and how I came across Dual Universe, might be a long intro... lol sorry!

    About Me
My gaming life started around when I was about 6 or somewhere around there, back when the PS2 was the thing and GTA: San Andreas was the thing as well. From there on, my gaming life grew and grew, until the point where I found myself gaming, not only in my PS2 but in an old Computer. Couple years later I moved into creating my own Personal Gaming Computer, which I've grown to love and care for, and after 3 years of using it, it still works like a charm!!!

Now I got into many mmos, under different names and what not. Soon I realized that I needed my own gaming name, and thus, the gaming tag "Comrademoco" came about. Years have passed and I still run about that name.

Now I play several, not a lot, but several MMO's like; STO, SWTOR, LoL, War Thunder, EvE Online amongst others, but this also includes single non-mmo games like Civilization and Rome Total War.

    My Gaming Community
I am a big player of STO, this led me to create a fleet with-in the universe of players like me, who shared the goal of; "Having fun in a safe gaming environment" During the years there, such fleet grew and grew to the point of becoming a large and possibly one of the Primary fleets within STO... however, this did not satisfy the part of the goal "gaming environment" thus leading me to the foundation of "Borg Defiants Gaming" an international gaming community that currently spands between several games, and is currently looking to expand to more games... I currently serve as the Content Manager and Community Manager for all communities under "Borg Defiants Gaming"
    ~Information no longer relevant ~

    Dual Universe
I came across Dual Universe, when I was in the mists of getting bored with some of the games I play, at that time it was "STO" that I was playing... I just totally got bored, and decided to look for games that met this criteria:

    1. Space
    2. TRUE exploration
    3. TRUE sandbox/single shard
    4. Ability to create own ships

With those goals in mind, I set for a course to the never ending land of.... Google.... Hehe and after a few hours, I came across a list of some "Top 10 upcoming space MMOs" I clicked on the link, and I read on the author's ramblings, sorting through the games, non of which appealed to me what so ever, but alas, I came across number 10.... Dual Universe. I read the info on the game, and its drew my attention. (To which this day I don't understand why it was number 10) And so I came to the website. Long story short... I read every... single... blog the devs have put up, and every single area of the website, this.... led me to, as one of my comments in one of the blogs... "Drool" over the game...

Overall I look forward to the games development and full launch and hope I can become part of it, via supporting it and playing it!!!
