  1. (I thought since the founder of NovaQuark and Dual Universe specializes in robotics and AI, I thought it would be fitting to put this topic here....)

I think they will be a useful way to assist people in doing jobs. I don't think they will be a cause of unemployment - rather, the jobs that humans will do will shift from stuff like manual labor to robot maintenance or whatever.

  2. Okay, it's time for yet another stupid question by yours truly! Don't mind me though, I like reading discussions about games like this though. Cures my boredom.

I've heard about the term "gameplay loop" in this forum (and also in another gaming forum) for a few times now. Many people agree that Dual Universe needs a lot of these things to be more enjoyable.

My question to you is, what makes a good gameplay loop? What are some good gameplay loops to add to Dual Universe?

  3. Okay, it's time for a topic a bit more crazy than usual from me. (I enjoy talking about this game because just like all of you, I want to see it succeed.) This topic is taken from the Steam boards of a game similar to Dual Universe.

Do you think this game could eventually "kill" Star Citizen? How would it be able to do so?

Star Citizen is still unfinished, but it still has more of a playerbase than DU. I think if the devs add a little bit more stuff (such as introducing new "gameplay loops" that everyone's been talking about here), it could rival and potentially beat Star Citizen in terms of popularity and ratings.

  4. How would you feel if the development of Dual Universe was mainly focused on making a "Second Life in space" kinda deal?

-In addition to building static structures, users can customize their avatars in greater detail (even if it doesn't make sense in lore, like being helmetless in space.)

-Users can submit their designs not only for avatar customization but decorative "Elements" as well. (more user-created content than just buildings)

-Overall, more of a focus on socialization (hence..."civilization" building). PVP, mining, industry, and stuff like that would not necessarily be omitted, though.

-Things like local text chat, emotes, and voice chat would be implemented.

-I'd assume it's easier to develop and implement ideas in the game because we already have Second Life itself, anyway.

Yeah, I'll probably be lit up for even suggesting this but I'm all outta ideas to discuss....

I actually did reply to your OP.

Society is supposed to bring people together and allow the citizens to do more than if there was no society at all. In DU its called a Civ but there is little to nothing to do together that qualifies as a society as much as solo, small groups, and what is left of the bigger orgs that used to play.

I do think that there should be a lot more mechanics to do that but a Civilization is a group of orgs and in the larger context of the solar system at large there should be other civilizations that fight against each other or work together. Orgs can do that but its like cities fighting in a state vs states fighting states or countries fighting countries and in this case planets fighting other civs on other planets.

I think you meant to respond to @PleiJades. But I agree with your post.

There are several points of view to give you this answer.

Yes, i am very excited about its imaging capabilities.

If everything goes according to plan, it will provide us with wanderfull new information and images.

But, im kind of pessimistic about the entire project.

The project is composed by a large quantity of extreme mechanisms that all have to work flawlessly.

And the telescope wont go to 500km altitude where it can be repaired, like Hubble.

If i add the history of Nasa, regarding telescopes, to the amount of details needed for success, with the delays the project has suffered, to the recent accident, to the location that its going to be sent, I feel like the odds are against it.

And being hyped like it is being, it will only cause a massive frustration to everyone if something goes wrong.

For those that dont know what has details that im talking about here are some:

The telescope has several mirrors that are folded, will have to unfold perfectly, and i mean, PERFECTLY. One micron too far is a massive failure.

The telescope imaging sensors (the camara) have to be actively refrigerated, those are aimed to detect heat waves (IR to microwaves) and if the sensor is too hot, it will generate radiation it self. This requires an container with a cooling agent that will have to last years. This requires a precise control over how much cooling agent is used. Too much, we will have the telescope rendered useless in months. Too little, images gathered are full of noise and useless.

To prevent the entire telescope from heating because of the sun, there are 3 reflective shields that have to be deployed to cast a shadow into the telescope.

Those shield are rolls of a metallic reflective foil and conposed of several triangle shaped forms per shield.

The chances of all (12-30 shapes?) unfolding after the stress of launch and months of cold harsh inter planetary trevel dont look very good in my eyes.

Then all the mechanisms focus movement, reaction wheels, aeronautics, comunications have to be in working condition

And all the theory, mathematic calculations have to be perfect (we have seen this fail with Hubble)

I really hope it delivers, but im not putting my money on that horse.

That's a good analysis, but I'm sure the engineers accounted for many of the possible problems the telescope may encounter. Still, perhaps it's best to be guarded against high expectations!

We had a guild of 50 players back in WoW BC days. The majority of us always met in real life, whether at Gamescom or at the campsite, and we often spent our free time together at half-yearly meetings. Sometimes at lakes, sometimes at the sea or in the mountains. We just made sure that we somehow took everyone with us, also financially or by carpooling. Two even found each other and got married, first ingame and later in real life. Over time, unfortunately, there were fewer and fewer of them, because more and more had stopped playing WoW or games in general. At least I think it was a friendlier and more helpful time then, too.

That's pretty cool! Quite the community!

  8. Apologies if this is a stupid question, but this is one of those games where it seems more fun to talk about ideas than actually play.

We've talked about the various games that influenced DU, such as EVE, as well as games that it in turn influenced, such as Starbase. But what about movies, books, and other forms of sci-fi? JC frequently discussed the influence of "Ready Player One" on the game. Maybe DU could borrow more stuff from the Gene Roddenberry works for example (Star Trek, Earth: Final Conflict, Andromeda, and so on.) As for what, I don't know exactly (although I think people have already considered adding stuff from these IPs.)

The game looks wicked.  I heard there are 10,000 some players daily.  Is this not accurate?

I agree it does look awesome. But a lot of people are saying that the game population is dying off. I dunno.

I'll think I'll come back to the game soon to check on the general chat and see how busy it is.

When i fly near buldings i can see my computer is warming up. I got RTX 2070 Ryzen 9 3900 and 48 GB ram . GTX 1660 and Ryzen 5 3600 should be bearly enough but 16GB ram is not enough for shure. That can cause frizes. Also External SSD is disaster in my opinion. You got Fast drive but connected via slow cable. I only use M2 SSD on bord that have more than 3GB/s transfer.

So to sumarize i think your PC is to week for smooth fly near planet and buildings.

Hmm...guess I gotta pull out the old wallet if I wanna continue playing this game....(so I should get more RAM and find an internal SSD....)

Yes, it is a thing. Lot's of players struggle with game lag/crashes especially when coming close to central hubs like popular markets etc.

And believe it or not, this is the improved version. Used to be much worse earlier.

Ah, at least I'm not the only one.

You could try and play a session on GeforceNow. If the issues still occurs on the same spots, it might be server-/enginewise. If not, it might be your hardware

Sounds like something I should do, too.

  11. I think I've posted about this several times before, but piloting in Dual Universe is pretty unbearable - pretty much impossible - for me now because my screen freezes for a long time making me lose control of my ship, which in turn makes me crash often. I suspected it has to do with the lag but people have said it has improved somewhat. I dunno.

I was also thinking it has to do with my graphics settings so I tried lowering the threads from the default (which is six I think) to two.  I still had problems with flight. So perhaps it isn't a graphics thing either (unless my GPU and system is really poor - I have a GTX 1660 coupled with an AMD Ryzen 5 3600.  I have 16 GB RAM in my system and I have the game installed on an external SSD. )

I'm just wondering if screen freezing is a common thing for you.

  12. I still check on my base on Alioth and ship from time to time, but I don't play for long periods of time anymore.

My reasons? I have other priorities (such as other games - I know, lame excuse) but I guess there's also a lack of incentive to explore around. I've been all over Alioth, Madis, Thades, and Jago, and explored space extensively. I've used a surrogate to explore the Free Port on Teoma and the Utopia Space Station. But I think I've seen a lot of stuff in Dual Universe now such that any further discoveries don't feel...."new". So yeah. Not worth it to log in except to check on my stuff briefly.

I would say that 16gb is dangerously near the limit.

All ppl i know saw a big improvement in stability in upgrading to 32GB.

Having a NVME ssd is also a good upgrade if you dont have it already.

Ah, thanks for info. Guess I'll get more RAM and that SSD then.

  14. I used to be able to play this game with very few technical problems. But now when I fly around I get lag which can be lethal in some cases.

I looked at the system requirements and the recommended RAM is now 16 GB and GTX 1080 (8 GB). I do have the 16 GB requirements fulfilled but my GPU seems a bit lacking (I have a 1660 which is only 6 GB.)

Do you think I should upgrade my computer for a better experience?
