  1. Heavens to Betsy! An element that only serves a single purpose? Just like...every single other element? You are correct that is complete crazy. What was I thinking?
  2. There is no guarantee this will work. How do two flat planes of two different constructs interact with each other? Do they slide past? Is there friction? What about collision So? If there is even a little then the entire elevator will be in for a bumpy ride. Surely we can over engineer and add sensors to detect how far away each elevator wall is away from the shaft. But that takes processing power. Now multiply these bumpy sensor driven elevators by the 10000 that will be required for a city. That is a lot of needless work that a simple rail element can fix. Could we build our own? Probably. I don't think I ever said we couldn't. Will they be scalable so that 10000 of them can be used in a city? I doubt it. Elements are something that should add function to a construct. Being able to easily move between different floors on that same construct sounds like a very handy function to me. I will reiterate, again, that the elevator element is just for the simplest case. We can still build crazy contraptions that retracts entire buildings underground, or a lift that can raise a very specifically shaped craft, spin it around and flick it into the air like a flapjack. The elevator business: easy to get into, difficult to master. Sound familiar? I don't have anything more to say on the subject. If NQ decide to implement any of these ideas, great. If not, also great.
  3. Cheers!I will be more than happy with just rail elements. Though I do still see the merit of having a generic box that runs on said rails. Also if there are rails, then there is no need for maneuver thrusters which imo are a workaround.
  4. 1. Ease of use aka convenience. Sure, we could build a construct that acts like an elevator. And we probably will for custom jobs, like for ship elevators that could be any size or shape. But for normal avatar use, an element that carries a few people is much the same as using a door element instead of having to create a construct for every moving part. 2. Optimization. A single generic model for the elevator can be loaded once and used over and over again seems like a pretty good idea. Within a city, that will already be high construct and player density, every little optimization helps. 3. Security. A normal construct with thrusters can go anywhere. People could blow a hole in a building and fly away with your public access elevator. That is an extreme example but it is possible and honestly not something we should have to worry about for a generic, every day, elevator for avatars. 4. Power concerns. If constructs run on fuel and there is no way to automatically top them up while they are "docked", we have a conundrum that custom door and elevator needs to be refueled manually instead of, more ideally, pulling power from the construct it is "attached" to. This will be an issue regardless, but without the elevator element, this problem rises to whole new levels. Imagine every elevator in a city has to be manually refueled or it gets stuck somewhere. If NQ comes back to us and says, whelp, we want the players to create their own elevators, there is no additional optimization that could be had, RDMS will allow you to set in which area a construct can operate in, and a refueling element that works over a few meters is a thing, well, then I will be as pleased as pudding and leave it at that.
  5. I look forward to this event. A week long expo, twice a year? Yes please.
  6. The existence of mecha hinges on the existence of hinges.
  7. DU is an MMO so its mechanics should encourage group play while not completely squashing a lone wolf style of game play. This is tough to balance since adding a simple thing like repair nanites could marginalize the group play aspect at least from a repair perspective. But if repairing a massive ship adds no value to group play, nanites might be a good solution, freeing up those players to feed resources into the nanite machines. Balancing ideas: Repair using nanites would necessarily be a slow process where as manual fixing is very fast at least in the nano-formers location. So the one is general slow repair while the other is for pin point quick fixing. The nanites element is bulky, fragile and costs quite a bit of power to use. So this will lend itself to repair stations rather than on board every ship except the largest ones Will it happen? Probably not. But rather than outright dismissing ideas, lets see if there is a way to make them workable (even if NQ will never implement them)

Camera drones? Yes please. I would be happy with just cameras. Add remote control and you have a camera drone.
  9. Like this one? https://board.dualthegame.com/index.php?/topic/10299-creative-mode-out-of-game-multiplayer-for-construct-blueprintsubassembly-creation/?p=37483
  10. Back to topic: Center of mass and potentially thrust indicators. These would be very useful while building on dynamic cores. Ideally a toggle on the construct while it is being built so show or hide these indicators, so that they don't get in the way of actual building. The static cores will probably not need the center of mass or thrust indicators... since they don't move.
  11. I propose the use of quantum probabilities to exchange the methane molecules for hydrogen and oxygen atoms, perhaps even their complete pure water molecules. This new technology can then be used to turn farts to life giving water. A fart-purifier if you will. This will save the worlds cattle farms and in so doing ensure beef for all. The steaks have never been higher.
  12. For those that missed the thank you: https://board.dualthegame.com/index.php?/topic/10415-novawrimo-contest-rules-to-participate/?p=43943 Thanks all
  13. The idea that if you control the planet, you control the surrounding space, is quite appealing. If you control a most of the planets you control the star system. Control the star systems and you control the galaxy. Control the galaxies and you control the universe. Control the planet, control the universe.
  14. No more a trick than summoning a carbon copy of yourself from a parallel dimension Gas harvesting off planets could be a thing, especially for fuels such as hydrogen, but we are talking about water here. Ice is the simplest source but it's not impossible to use gases as a source, it just requires a few more steps in the process. The terrestrial planets are rich in heavier gases and gaseous compounds, such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen, ozone, and argon. In contrast, the gas giant atmospheres are composed mostly of hydrogen and helium. Put hydrogen and oxygen together, set it on fire and boom: you have water as a by-product. Is it the simplest way of obtaining water? Probably not, as ice is a much simpler source, but since water is likely required growing plants it would be nice to be able to get it in multiple ways. That all said, this is a game so this could all be simplified away into an element or two.
  15. Imagine public transport that only runs if someone is in the vehicle. Wouldn't we call that person the "driver"? Jokes aside, automating transport becomes a bit of a logistical problem if the vehicle moves only while people are in it. Maybe the answer is to employ someone to always ride the bus. Alternatively, if one could have a vehicle on a set of rails and use a call button on either end. If it's built into the game itself, minimal scripting (if any) would be required to make a working system.

    Uber Services

It is a good idea. And you could call it what it is: a taxi service. But this would have to be done by a trusted company.
  17. Food and drink naturally give rise to food farming and water bottling on rocks that can support it. This also means that people will be drawn back to places where they can obtain the food and drink. To accommodate the spacefaring people there might need to be resource converters that can convert a resource into food or drink. e.g. Some gasses can be converted into water or alcohol. Any organics can be converted to a grey nutritious sludge, and organics can be grown in special elements.
  18. Thanks. It looks like Shad is making the rounds (And Lethys is making me jealous of his French)
  19. I wish you luck in your endeavors and look forward to seeing your mother ship created in DU. One question: Are you primarily going to communicate in French? or will there be a little English as well?
