I think this will be an extra load for the server. You can use teamspeak or discord. Chat is the best solution. For example, a special chat with a range of 100 meters. Another option is a special plugin for teamspeak similar to "task force radio" mod for Arma 3

I still don't think so, doesn't allow the information to move throughout the universe well enough, as well as align with points made by Warden.

I just updated the original post with some of the common criticisms and solutions to them.

  2. I don't think the load is an issue in terms of communication, it can be P2P if needed. I absolutely think its needed when it comes down to the scope of this game.  As Warden states encounters are what will really bring the game to life and they must be developed to the full extent, a city cannot be alive unless there is suitable communication and a 3rd party service doesn't offer what is required, getting someone to log onto a 3rd party app and then join your server and all the steps required would simply take too long for it to be effective. A city cannot really operate unless information can flow through it, from hearing announcements, speeches, warnings, a local trader convincing you to buy something to a police officer asking for identification.

Of course, this feature isn't required in the Alpha, Beta or even launch (although it would be nice), I would be happy to see it eventually become apart of the game.

  3. I guess it would be expected of me to defend my own VOIP suggestion, But I do not see 3rd party apps conveying messages correctly, you cant have the experience that a VOIP system offers. On the idea for emotes though I think that would work incredibly well, dealing with people from multiple backgrounds can lead you to the basics of communication at times and a simple gesture can be an easy and effective way to tell a message.

It could also be further integrated as gestures animated by the player, such as a wave or salute, making some incredible rallies possible.

  4. Still wondering how NQ feels about this suggestion, I haven't read the replies in some time but it seems there is surprisingly a lot of support for the idea or at least the same idea but implemented in a different way. At this rate of development, it feels like a necessity for larger organisations.

Without competing political parties, corruption is abolished, no politician can be bribed as there is no fear of losing power. This creates a surprisingly equal society outside the palace. With a constant leader, the Empire can make important decisions quickly and save thousands of peoples creations and lives.

The Empire is a peaceful organisation but it's inevitable that there will be those seeking to conquer lands and destroy what many people have worked so hard to achieve. It is because of this reason that our military is so fierce and powerful, providing an exciting and dynamic experience to Soldiers as well as keeping the citizens of the Empires minds at peace as they can be guaranteed that they will never see the horrors of war.

The Empires military is designed to be effective, build from its very foundations it has become something to be feared, It's intention is to ensure the peace and prosperity upheld by the Empire at all costs.

No one is treated unfairly, everyone who joins the military stands the same as every other candidate. You have to earn your way through the ranks.

Have yourself stand out as a war hero, give your ship a tint of artwork to install fear into your enemies as your stare them down in battle, you have the flexibility to become a legend.

  6. Control Units = what hosts Lua scripts. You don't put scripts into a thruster, you put the scripts into a cockpit, AKA, a Control Unit.

Guess now how mapping a spaceship's automated systems and maneuvers will be handled. If you thought "Lua scripted key-binds?" then you stand correct. That is as simple as making "computercraft-ish" OSs for Control Units in-game.

Guess what else can be coded in Lua. Interfaces. Yeah. And mini-games. Even a scoreboard can be implemented that way that is printed onto the screen.

Also, there's a place that keeps track of who joined the [insert organisation name here]. It's the community portal.

This is a screen - another version of a Control Unit.

    17_control_unit_screen_version.jpg

Given time and persistence, a person can make amazing interfaces for screens and sell it to the highest bidder in-game, or even make a custom interface for people who want their ship to have a unique feel to it.

    Cheers.

    Thank you.

Correct me if I'm wrong but so far from what I've seen and read you can program vessels but only the vessel and its functions. But what if there was a terminal you could place anywhere and program? Similar to Computercraft (Minecraft mod), Which allows you to interact with a Small virtual computer with a basic LUA os. This would be difficult for the Devs and if introduced it would most likely be after release.

There are many uses, one of the biggest uses I have and I will use for an Example is, the Empire is planning on a network to keep information on every player who joins the Empire. And it will be private until you register with the Military which will extend your file and add information about you such as what Squad you're in and where you are located. It will also carry a small history and criminal record. This system could be accessed from anywhere in the Empire by members above a certain rank. From there they can write and modify reports on players files. A small LUA system that runs like this can also help run other organisations and businesses as a way to log all shipments and expenses.

I see it being a real help to the Economy of the Game.  And there could possibly be a way to send signals wirelessly. You could have a Computer send a transmission on a Frequency, and if another Computer receiving on frequency is loaded it can read the signal and decrypt it if needed.

This could also grow the diversity of Organisations as now you will have organisations that produce software for other Organisation use.

What do you think? Is it Easily Exploitable? Is it asking for the Impossible?  Do I even know what I'm talking about? I'm interested.

  8. A respectable organisation would Declare it. If they don't they risk Destroying the Innocent, Usually a war will end with the Territory of the defeated being claimed or Annihilated. I would see organisations claiming as they get something for the Effort so a Declaration to prepare the Civilians on the Other side would normally be done in the case of a Respectable organisation looking to claim and not Destroy.

  9. necessary? if we went by what EVERYONE deemed necessary, we would have collision damage and self replicating robots and blah blah blah the game would be broken.i can probably make something if they dont make it for the game and ill post it up somewhere :-) as long as nq will let me

The concept of trade and movement of information will be vital. Especially with the focus on politics. Without voice chat it's like an Arrow in the Knee for Dual Universe.

  10. im torn i want it but i want them to spend the time on it, maybe a deal with someone like curse where they dont have to do much work and its a plugin

everyone gets so pie in the sky with everything, first we have to get the revolutionary mmo thing up a running :-)

I Would think they would put the time in to make it. It seems like a necessary component to the systems they have in place.

  11. In this game, I don't see the voice system being exploited too much and even when it is they could add a key to your keyboard that if you press it and you face the one making the noise they are muted.  but you have to think of many scenarios to see why this will be useful and I will list below.

    [situation one]

You're walking around in a Faction which is having an Upcoming election. You pass a corner and there is a Speech going on. You decide to walk up close and hear it. The speaker mentions heightened Taxes and everyone Boos.

(With an Accept system the immersion of hearing someone Boo is quite difficult.)

    [situation two]

You are Law enforcement and someone runs up to you in a panic and informs you that her stock has been stolen. You see the thieves ahead and call out telling them to stop. You catch up to them and then taser one.

(You would need an open voice system to be able to hear the person who reported the stolen food in a rush. And also if it wasn't added the person who was tasered would be confused. )

So there would be people who scream and sing and chat but this would all be background noise if the system is done right. If its directional then the other voices should be quite and the only ones you would hear and the people very close to you or someone standing right in front of you and they face your direction. This will just make everything else background noise. And even then you could add a key to mute everyone in the area. Or at least turn them down. Like maybe hold down F7 and tilt your head up or down to adjust volume. A system of getting a request and then accepting of declining sounds easy to moderate but it's placing a massive handicap on the system and goes against its original purpose which was to be a quick and easy way to say something without people needing to do things to respond. But here is an Alternate solution. You could place the request and accept system in-game options so you could use either of them.

  12. I'd personally go further and allow (sandboxed) remote code execution.

Kinda like html5 programming, you get a "screen", a few processing resources and a link back to the "server" dpu and can execute code on the client DPU.

For example for remote interaction interfaces which work on any construct without people having to build complex protocols manually.

Say theres a big trade station with automatic dock management.

You ping the station and you get a request for remote computing.

You allow the station a screen and some computing resources and it opens up the dock interface on the screen in your ship, through which you ask for a dock and the station replies by giving you a waypoint for docking through the interface.

Then it closes the link again and the interaction is over.

Basically a system to draw GUI elements on cooperating computer systems/screens to allow easy access to automated functions without the community having to build complex communications protocols and software

    They could both be implemented.

  13. The point is talking to someone you are close at or come across with, TS wouldn't give you that feature, and the spammers can get reported. Anyway, I think the orgs masters only should have the right to use city-speakers to inform the population.

That seems fair. But in total, this feature is needed for proper communication. It also gives a sense of immersion.
