Mortis
Sorry but it always turns out to be mostly TeamSpeak, Skype or something like that. In-game options aren't usually that great and We already have all our friends in Skype etc.
Cornflakes
In-game voice isnt necessary, no. But a generalised localised communications system that can also be used by automated systems could provide a lot of gameplay. A general "communication station" "link" in a ship with a scriptable way to reroute it to specific locations in your ship or even through other communication links. Any incoming coms would just go to "coms" and could then be routed internally to specific stations or computers. This link could then be used to provide remote interfaces or computer interactions. For (semi)automated requests or trading systems (with remote provided interface widgets). For docking, stargate usage requests, fully automated handshake identification, semi automatic identifications (code entering), etc. An automated construct could send you a communications request, you let the request through and put it "on screen". The construct then puts a custom interface onto the screen through which the player then interacts. asking for authentication in form of a password, or maybe in form of another computers output. NERDFIGURE
An in game suit tool that you can ajust to your personal likeing for coms to others with that same equipped tool. Also ships with seperate coms modules that can be attacked and disabled would be an amazing feature.
croxis
LImit player chat would be dumb, but in game drones/devices/programs could observer range (even speed) limits.
MechMercant
Why not have ingame mics and comunications that would be through either radio or screen comunication. Kinda like star trek the next generation.
BliitzTheFox
Now isn't there a LUA solution to this like rednet? https://board.dualthegame.com/index.php?/topic/7880-lua-communication/ This would likely work alongside a voice chat and an ingame text chat, but it could open up some possibilities of encrypted site to site text chat or remote ship control. Hampius
I'm not sure if you guys are familiar with Elite Dangerous communication, but I think something similar could be usefull here. Basically, there is a chat in each station, there is whisper feature, whisper to group, etc. One feature that is trully nice is the possibility to open voice chat to ships that you meet. Also there are group voice chats. Add some EVE Online freedom with chat windows and there - you have everything you need for communication to work fluently, etc Just my 5 cents...
